Step 1. Select tools

We went to an art salon store to buy the instrument. The brushes were chosen from synthetic fiber: natural hair can deteriorate after the first painting with chemical-based paints. We bought special paints and contours for stained glass. It is important that they are from the same company: materials from different manufacturers may not be compatible in consistency, and because of this the stained glass window will spread. Easier to buy special set for this type of work. For window glass it is better to use transparent paints. If you are creating a picture on glass that will not transmit light, matte paints are more suitable.

Step 2. Prepare the sketch

It could be an original drawing, a copy of a photograph, an outline of a loved one’s hand - it’s better to get your hand drawn on simple drawings.

Step 3. Translate the image

We place the prepared sketch under the glass and transfer the drawing onto it, carefully tracing the lines with a stained glass outline. We start working from the top so as not to smear the outline. Completing the line, we tear off the hand. Each element must be completed separately.

Step 4. Apply paints

The contour should dry well. This will require at least 5 hours. Then we decorate the elements of the finished drawing stained glass paints(remember children's coloring books). If you don't have enough colors, you can mix the ones you have, creating different shades. To ensure color purity, the brush should be washed with nail polish remover after each paint. We wet a clean napkin or cloth with it and carefully wipe off the lint.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

“You have to love your instrument very much. And it will love you back,” says Natalya, lovingly washing her brushes after the last stroke.

To clean the instrument thoroughly, use a solvent and a cloth. Cleaning up the “sincerities” on the stained glass window. If you need to remove a small element, you can arm yourself with ear sticks.

Step 6. Let's admire it!
The paints must dry very well. If they are damp, they will spread all over the glass. The best option is to leave the stained glass to dry overnight. If you need to finish the job urgently, you can use a hairdryer to speed up drying.

The next day we turn the resulting beauty upside down. After all, we carried out all the work from the inside out. And... enjoy!

If the drawing subsequently gets boring, it can be easily removed using the same solvent.

6) Insert the finished sketch into a frame under glass. Now you need to stick beads and broken glass onto the glass surface, in accordance with the contours of our drawing. Squeeze the glue onto the glass and start gluing. You can pick up beads with a toothpick, and broken glass with tweezers.

7) After the entire picture has been transferred to the glass, remove the sheet of paper with the design. Paint the background of the frame with white paint.

8) Wait until the applique on the glass and the glue on the frame dry. Insert the glass into the frame. The picture is ready!

What you need to make stained glass

Before you start work, prepare everything you need. For painted and filled stained glass you will need paints.

Paints

Special stained glass or acrylic glass paints are used. They all have their own characteristics.

Acrylic paints

The composition includes three main components: pigment, water and acrylic polymer emulsion. Sold in tubes or jars.

Acrylic paints dry quickly, after which they become durable and resilient. After drying, they are resistant to temperature and humidity changes. It is very difficult to scrape off a dried coating, as well as to remove it with sandpaper.

The color of the finished coating is matte and bright. It is not subject to fading and does not fade over time. Paints of different colors can be mixed with each other. The brush should be washed with water immediately after use; if it becomes dry, you will have to use a solvent.

There are two types: fired and unfired. After application, those fired are heated in the oven, harden and become resistant to external influences. The firing temperature is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging.

If the paints are not fired, after a week they will dry and harden in the same way as when fired, but before this point there is a risk of smearing them. Paints are water-based, so they are diluted with it. Brushes can also be washed with water.

Unfired paints dry in 1 to 3 days, depending on the manufacturer. The drawing requires fixing by applying a layer of nitro varnish.

These colors are more vibrant. They are thicker due to the synthetic solvent they contain. They fit well and are more convenient to work on vertical surfaces.

Homemade paints

Some craftsmen prefer to use paints own production. They are easy to make yourself from what is sold in construction stores.

Based on nitro varnish. NTs-2141 or another similar one is used. Nitrovarnish is diluted with solvent 647 in a ratio of 1 to 0.4. Artistically tinted oil paint or construction color. The dye is added little by little until the desired color intensity is achieved.
Based on BF-2 glue. The glue is diluted twice with acetone and tinted with any alcohol-based dye. This could be ballpoint pen paste or other paint. The emulsion is stirred in a glass container and tested on the glass. If necessary, add paint until the required intensity is achieved.
Gelatin based. 5–6 grams of gelatin brew 200 ml hot water until it reaches a paste consistency and add fabric dye. A drawing made from such paint requires fixing with nitro varnish.

In addition to paints, you will need an outline for the work. This is a special thick paste for outlining the borders of a pattern. It imitates metal frames for pieces of smalt in painted and filled stained glass windows.

Circuit

Relief contours are made on a water basis and are sold in tubes. With their help, the drawing is outlined, which is then filled with paints. Can also be used to create a three-dimensional drawing.

At home, contour paste can be prepared using PVA glue. To do this, you will need 50 ml of tableware PVA, 20-30 ml of natural black ink (the best is Dutch), 30-40 grams of silver or bronze powder.

Mascara is added to the glue with constant stirring, and then powder until a creamy consistency is obtained. This paste is prepared as needed and is not stored. Stir each time before use. Masters apply it with a brush, forming a roll; for beginners, it is more convenient to use a pastry syringe.

For the production of stained glass using different techniques a special tool is required. In drawing and pouring techniques you will need a minimum of it:

ruler;
pencil;
glass marker;
tassels;
wooden sticks or toothpicks.

Stencil for stained glass

A suitable stencil can be purchased at a specialty store or from a stained glass artist. But it’s much more interesting to make a stencil yourself by choosing a suitable sketch.

Do not choose a sketch with many details and voids; such a design will look sloppy on the finished stained glass window.

The image can be downloaded from the Internet and simply printed at the required scale, taking into account the size of the future stained glass window. Or take a picture or postcard you like and enlarge it to the required size.

I decided to write a tutorial on creating a mosaic from homemade pieces of glass. You can, of course, buy ready-made glass chips and lay them out beautiful paintings, or make ceramic chips by hand in 2 firings. But this is either expensive or very costly in terms of time and resources, which are not available to everyone.

To complete this lesson you will need the following materials:

1) Sheet clear glass or, if available, colored sheet glass. Perhaps you have glass on your balcony at home, or you can purchase it at a specialty store. By the way, they give away small trimmings or broken glass. You can use glass from photo frames. There is another option to look for glass on the street, sometimes there is a lot of it near houses due to the replacement of old windows with “euro” ones.
It is important to use glass of the same thickness.
2) Gloves to protect hands.
3) Thick wooden ruler for more precise cutting.
4) Glass cutter. Glass cutters are sold in art stores.
5) Acrylic paints on glass and ceramics. I have them from DECOLA. There are a wide variety of similar paints on sale. But in extreme cases, you can use ordinary acrylic, and in extreme cases, tempera and gouache.
6) The basis for our mosaic. It can be different depending on the idea. If this is a flat picture, then durable plywood (the main thing is that it does not bend) or plastic will be suitable for the base. Small mosaics can be used to cover any surface - flower pots, vases, photo frames and more.
In my case, it's a pot.
7) Moment glue for securing the pieces. It is best to use the transparent option.
8) Grout for joints, which can be any binder - be it a special tile grout, gypsum, alabaster, etc. For ease of application of the mixture, you will also need a small rubber spatula, and for cleaning - a cloth.

1. So, first you need to select the surface to be decorated and the design that we will apply to it. In my case it's easy geometric ornament, which I immediately drew on the pot. But if it's more complex drawing, it’s worth making a sketch and transferring it to the surface. Here you need to decide on the colors and sizes of the mosaic that you will need. I will have 3 of them: burgundy, brown and yellow.

2. Glass cutting. You may not have tried cutting glass with a glass cutter before, but it's very easy! It is imperative to work with protective gloves. The glass breaks into small pieces that can cause injury. If certain sizes of pieces are required, it is better to mark their thickness with a thin marker on the glass. (I do this by eye).
It is better to use glass sizes up to 1.5 cm, otherwise they will lag behind the cylindrical surface.
Place a ruler where you need to cut a strip of glass and, holding the glass cutter slightly at an angle, quickly draw a line with force.

Then, we take pliers, pre-wrapped with electrical tape or masking tape, and, holding the remaining piece of glass in the other hand, break off a strip of glass.

Now we cut squares from this strip, breaking off each one separately. You will also need triangular elements. They are more difficult to cut. So, when coming up with a drawing, it’s worth taking this into account. Glass chips cannot be adjusted to shape using pliers like ceramic chips, as they will only crumble.

Here are our glass pieces ready! It is better to cut immediately with a reserve!

3. Glass painting. Before painting, it is best to wash them to remove grease and dirt from the surface. Once they're dry, you can start painting! I usually lay them out on a large sheet and paint each one with a brush. It's a pretty quick process! Afterwards you need to let them dry.

I also decided to make inserts in plain stripes. First I painted them using contours, and after drying, with the same paints as the rest.

It turned out to be a lot of colorful pieces!

4. Gluing the mosaic.

To begin, I draw a design on the surface with a pencil.

I cover the edges of the pot with masking tape so that I don't get them stained with grout later. No matter what the product is, there will probably be places you don't want to get dirty!

And I begin to glue the top strip of the mosaic with glue. I apply it to a small area so I have time to glue 2-4 pieces. Eat difficult places, where you need to select the appropriate piece. Therefore, sometimes you need to figure it out first and then glue it on. There should not be too much glue so that it does not squeeze out into the seams between the pieces.

I paste a burgundy strip on top and bottom.

Now I'm gluing it yellow stripe in the middle.

I paste it with brown stripes on both sides.

I fill the remaining space with yellow mosaic.

5. Grouting joints. Most often they need to be rubbed down. But if the mosaic is laid close and neatly, you don’t have to do this.
First, I prepare the solution. In principle, on the packaging of any grout for tiles or plaster, it is written in what proportions the binder and water should be mixed. I'm out of grout, so I'm using white plaster. The powder must be poured into water, and not vice versa, and mixed! The mixture should have a consistency similar to liquid sour cream. If it gets thick, you can add a little water. If you mix it too thin, the solution will take a long time to thicken.

So, the prepared mixture should stand for a while and thicken. You don't need very much of it.
By the way, this grout can be any color. To do this, you need to add paint directly to the liquid solution. I add yellow paint.
Then I spoon or pour (if it’s not thick enough) the mixture onto the mosaic and spread it over the entire surface with a spatula. The grout must be pushed into the seams between the pieces. You need to work quickly, as the solution hardens quickly.

The solution dried out a little. I take a cloth and clean off the remaining solution from the surface of the pieces. If the rag smears the solution, it means it has not dried enough yet.

After thorough cleaning, the pot is ready! Some corners will have to be cleaned with a sharp object. You need to let the pot dry for a couple of days. Now you can plant some fun cactus in it!

Let me note that attaching the layer acrylic paint glue applied to the surface is not the most durable... so if you don’t pick at it too much during the manufacturing process (after rubbing the seams, the pieces will be bonded to the surface of the pot) and afterwards, the product will be durable.

I made 2 more frames. One is made from multi-colored remnants of painted mosaics with grout, the second is from colored sheet glass without grout. For the base we used simple wooden frames from IKEA
