An abstract composition is not based on a real model; the canvas in this case is considered an isolated surface where the artist can speak or seek his own language to express his thoughts. Various color and linear combinations can be depicted on canvas with the sole purpose of exciting or surprising the viewer. It is believed that painting is now experiencing the flourishing of creativity and any artist defends his right to personal vision and imagination. To achieve good results in painting abstract paintings, we need to achieve commonality between the sketch of the forms that we will depict and the whole variety of techniques used. We recommend choosing two or three paint techniques and starting to create your abstract composition.

PHASE 1: Working with the spatula

1. Using thinned brown paint, create a sketch of several objects. This sketch will help us plan the placement of the paint on the base.

2. Using a spatula, apply and mix different colors on the base. Apply paint to the edge of the base and use a spatula to spread it along the entire length of the painting.

3. Take a medium-sized brush and apply lines of white and black paint to the color spots. The combination of lines and spots will awaken interest in the graphics of the picture.

The plasterer's metal spatula is very suitable for working with paint on extended surfaces. You must have a lot of paint to use this tool in your work.

Depicting variations

When you're working on abstract paintings, you apply paint very quickly. The whole process of creating such a picture does not last long. While we are working on a traditional painting, we can create several abstract compositions. Knowing this, you should always introduce an element of abstraction into traditional compositions and, conversely, introduce elements of traditional paintings into abstract compositions. To continue working on an abstract composition, it is not necessary to use a wide range of colors; it can be completed using the same colors as in the beginning.

4. Reapply the gray, red and green-brown paint onto the base with a spatula. Then we distribute the white paint over the surface of the painting, forming peculiar zigzags.

5. You can use a brush to apply cloudy paints to the base. And on top of the background, using a spatula, we make geometric spots of different colors, so that one figure is a continuation of the other.

In order to realistically depict a complex still life or landscape on paper or canvas, you need to be able to draw. Even those who have never felt artistic talent can make a basic abstract drawing. Don't believe me? Take a sheet of paper and try to create some kind of composition using ordinary ones. Well, for example, like the one in the picture on the right.

In the beginning there was a word and that word was abstractio, which translated from Latin means distraction or removal. Abstract artists refuse realistic depictions of the world around them. Instead, they operate with various geometric shapes and color spots, trying to achieve harmony and evoke a bright feeling in the audience.

The Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky is considered to be the founder of abstract art. No less famous is another artist who stood at the origins of abstract painting - Kazimir Malevich. Probably everyone remembers his famous abstract drawing “Black Square”. Great masters worked in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Another big name is Pablo Picasso, who left a whole gallery of wonderful examples of abstract art.

How to draw an abstract picture?

Nothing can stop a person from drawing if he wants to. In order to create an abstract drawing or a full-fledged painting, you just need to give yourself the opportunity to relax and not be afraid of anything. Painting and drawing are an opportunity for self-expression. With the help of symbols, geometric shapes or color spots, you can express your mood and give vent to your subconscious.

You can start with simple lines, smooth or, conversely, angular - it all depends on your imagination. When the graphic drawing is completed, you can start filling it with color. There are no special rules here. Just turn off your consciousness and draw freely the way children do - with their souls.

What paints and materials are suitable for abstract painting?

An abstract drawing can be made with any paints, pastels, wax crayons or colored pencils. Acrylic paints are very suitable for novice creators - they are bright and dry very quickly. Even if you make a mistake and want to correct it, it is not difficult to do this with acrylic paints. In addition, they can be used to write on both canvas and paper.

You can choose any brushes, but bristle or core brushes are best. You can use synthetic brushes. If you want to work only with color, then you can completely abandon brushes and pick up a sponge or pieces of foam rubber. They are great for applying paint to wood, canvas or paper substrates.

How to draw an abstraction on a computer?

Another way to create original abstractions is to learn how to draw them on a computer. To do this, you can use Photoshop, Illustrator or CorelDraw. True, here you will have to spend a lot of effort in order to tame these computer graphics monsters. There are special programs in which you can generate abstract fractal patterns. Perhaps you will become a real digital artist and create beautiful abstract flower drawings - fractals.

Today's acrylic painting lesson is devoted to writing a dynamic, bright abstract plot on two canvases - a diptych. We will write with a considerable amount of expression and imagination. We will use imagination and resourcefulness not only to create an interesting plot, these qualities will also be useful today in order to find new unusual and successful tools for painting an unusual picture.

The history of the painting

There was no specific idea initially; the plot was born spontaneously in the process of writing and searching for new ideas. However, in the process of this search, we managed to find several “new tools” for acrylic painting.

These new devices turned out to be: a net for construction work, which is very clearly visible in the video, a spatula with teeth - for laying tiles, and masking tape.

Color solution

Red the color was not chosen by chance - many people associate it with bright autumn foliage, and gives beautiful shades in combination with yellow, white and purple. Yellow the color in the center was an excellent solution for painting the sunset and the city against the backdrop of the setting sun. Yellow smoothly flowing into orange and red gives a full feeling of the heavenly body setting beyond the horizon, warmth and charm of this truly wonderful time of day. Purple and violet shades, excellent contrast to hot yellow and red tones. Also, these mysterious colors are associated with the evening and night sky, which will certainly envelop the city after sunset.

Features of writing a diptych

Since we will be painting a diptych, we will need to paint on two canvases at the same time in order to see the whole picture.

Canvases can be placed on the floor, table or mounted on an easel. Before you start painting an acrylic painting, it is customary to moisten the canvas with water.

Let's try to conduct an experiment, we will paint on a dry canvas.

It is best to start working on an abstract plot with a large flute brush; it is bold, sweeping movements that help you overcome the fear of “what if it doesn’t work out?”, gain taste, and still write something quite interesting and beautiful.

Glare of the sun's rays

The first, non-standard technical technique of this work is water spilled abundantly in the center of the canvases by the layer of applied paint (this can be clearly seen in the video).

In fact, these are not premeditated actions of the artist, but a child's prank. I took a break from work for a few minutes, and during this time my daughter splashed the canvas with water from a spray bottle.

I had to think what to do about it. First, we wiped off the water with a dry, clean cloth, and noticed that this was just a great technique!

Carefully dipped splashes and drops of water on still damp acrylic paint look like very beautiful light spots, this is especially good for an abstract landscape. It’s like the glare of sunlight through yellow foliage.

Paint through the mesh

The second technique that is worth describing is this applying paint through the mesh . Everything is simple here. Through pieces of construction mesh you can, in a matter of minutes, paint hundreds of windows of multi-story buildings. You cut out a suitable piece of mesh, apply it to a canvas that has already been pre-painted in the desired color, and on top of the mesh you apply paint with a palette knife that is contrasting (background) to the one that lies under the mesh. Place a piece of mesh on the black silhouette of the house and apply yellow paint on top - the windows are ready.

The grid performs the function stencil.

I would only like to advise you to apply the paint in a fairly thick layer, this gives a very interesting effect and an unusual beautiful structure.

Notched spatula as a palette knife

Usagenotched trowel as a palette knife. This technique is used by one famous British artist. With a spatula with teeth, you can quickly and beautifully draw out many parallel lines at the same time, be they straight, wavy, spiral, broken, or several closed circles at once. A very effective technique - it fascinates the master himself as he works, as well as the audience - who then look and cannot understand how the artist managed to write out so many identical lines so accurately.

Numerous parallel lines that emerge from under such a spatula give the composition the dynamics and rhythm inherent in the life of a big city.

Crumpled film

We use crumpled cellophane for applying paint to canvas. This technique is very simple. You crumple up a small piece of cellophane film (or paper), dip it in paint of the desired color, and then with this cellophane “brush” apply a wide variety of prints, lines and dots on the canvas at once. Crumpled cellophane is an excellent tool for writing foliage on trees and bushes. One touch allows you to immediately identify an entire crown or a large branch with a huge number of small leaves and twigs.

Masking tape

Masking tape in my work I used it exclusively for experimental purposes. This experiment turned out to be quite successful and quite effective. This not entirely artistic tool can act as a “ruler” and a screen at the same time - if you need to select even, clear segments on the canvas.

Also, in the process of work we used a palette knife “crown” No. 3, this tool in this case turned out to be not effective enough, so we skip working with it.

Working with brushes

Working on this diptych brushes were also used : They painted tree trunks and branches, and also added some accents.

Almost at the end of the work, several strokes of green paint were made to slightly emphasize the abundance of red in the composition, as well as to show islands of greenery, pleasing the eye in the golden autumn.

The creation of this painting primarily involves the additive process (also known as the color stacking method). How was this abstract painting created?

Here are step-by-step instructions for creating a painting:

I applied 2-3 layers of red acrylic paint to the edges of the 16" x 20" canvas because I wanted the red to be rich and opaque without allowing the white of the canvas to show through the paint. I then waited for each coat to dry before applying a new one. Acrylic dries very quickly, so it won't take long.

I knew what I wanted for the centerpiece of the painting - I wanted it in my usual whimsical abstract style: bold colors intertwining and twisting, bright shapes and intricate patterns! When I worked in this style, I created forms spontaneously, deciding on composition in a completely intuitive way. I didn't pre-plan anything.

I created different shapes, one color at a time. For example, at first I only drew yellow shapes. Then orange, then dark pink, light pink, etc.

I strive to create a balanced variety of shapes and colors. The idea is to make the viewer's eye jump around the canvas. So I try to create a sense of movement and energy in these strange works.

I continue to paint patterns like this until the canvas is completely painted over - these patterns form the bottom layer of the composition. In the first layer, the shapes are placed next to each other rather than on top of each other.

Now that the initial bottom layer is almost finished, I begin to paint the fine details onto the already created shapes. This is called the color stacking method, which involves layering layers on top of each other. This is an example of one technique you can use to create an abstraction in acrylic.

First I draw circles, semicircles, dots, swirls, spirals, droplets, triangles and lines. Folk art around the world has had a strong influence on these patterns.

The process of adding detail layers continues. The more details I add, the smaller they become as I add details on top of what I've already drawn.

As mentioned earlier, the colors were chosen to convey a sense of movement. I want the colors to pop out of the canvas.

Repeating designs begin to turn into bizarre, intricate patterns. Creating patterns is one of the elements you can use in abstract painting.

When I add details, I apply one color at a time. For example, I'll add all the white parts on top of the canvas, then all the red ones, and so on. This means I only have to squeeze the paint out of one tube. Since acrylic dries quickly, I try to keep only the amount of paint on my palette that I need at the moment!

I continue to layer colors and patterns on top of each other until I feel the painting is complete and everything is balanced. Because this is abstract art created in an intuitive manner, there is no obvious "end point." I just have to let my gut feeling tell me that the painting is ready.

When working with these types of paintings, I often turn the painting sideways or upside down to look at it from a different perspective. There is no specific side that is supposed to be the top of the painting - I leave the choice up to the buyer. Rotating the canvas up and down or side to side as I paint helps me see which areas are balanced and which are not, so I know where to focus.

As you can see, there are many shapes and colors in this painting, but there is still an overall sense of balance and harmony.

Drawing an abstract picture

Ask your child to choose a paint color and randomly pour it over the canvas.
