Why visit museums during the New Year holidays

Traditionally, the New Year in Russia is accompanied by a long rest. Many people devote this time to hearty meals at the New Year's table, visiting, and traveling to visit relatives in another area. However, there are people who use every free minute to gain new impressions from meeting the beautiful. Visiting museums, exhibition halls and other cultural sites with your family makes a joint vacation more meaningful and useful, both from the point of view of bringing all family members closer together, and from the point of view of spiritual and cultural growth. Agree, it will be much more useful for your child to visit some kind of exhibition than to endlessly spend the holidays on the street. There should be moderation in everything, and it will be very good if you and your whole family during long New Year holidays visit more than one interesting museum. At the same time, you can take into account the inclinations, age and tastes of your children and choose museums that will interest everyone.

Very often on weekdays there is no time to visit cultural events, especially with the whole family. New Year holidays are the perfect time to strengthen family bonds and learn something new from visiting museums. Moreover, many museums operate completely free of charge during this period. Their variety is so great that they are suitable for people of all ages and interests.

Our two capitals have already established a good tradition of opening the doors of cultural institutions during the New Year holidays completely free of charge. The New Year holidays, one might say, have just begun. Behind New year's night and January 1 is difficult for many, which means it’s time to think about how to spend time interestingly and usefully. In St. Petersburg, the most popular place where crowds of tourists and local residents, there will be a Hermitage museum.

Russians will have a whole week on vacation at the beginning of 2018 - government agencies I only go to work on the morning of January 9th. Of course, many work regardless of the established schedule, because residents of the country simply cannot do without some services and goods for a long time.

At the same time, even those who are busy at work strive to get out of the house on New Year or Christmas and go to the museum, and even more so, the most important and large-scale museum Russia is a great idea for spending time.

Opening hours of the Hermitage Museum during the New Year holidays

The museum is one of those structures that did not go on a ten-day vacation. It was closed only on January 1st. In general, the working week began on January 2 and will continue until Christmas.

As it became known, the museum will also be closed on January 7, the Feast of the Nativity of Christ.

On other days the museum waits for visitors regular schedule— Monday is closed, Tuesday and Friday from 10:30 to 21:00, other days from 10:30 to 18:00. It is important to remember that in the city holidays there will be many people wanting to visit the Hermitage and you need to be prepared to stand in line for an hour or two.

In the Hermitage they are preparing for the New Year very seriously - the halls are decorated with old toys, the Christmas trees are decorated magnificently and solemnly. By the way, placing several New Year trees in the museum has become a good tradition - it originated in the times of the Romanovs, when each of the members royal family dedicated Christmas tree within the walls of the building.

At the beginning of the month, a separate hall was opened in the museum, which displays costumes and outfits different eras and peoples - the exposition will also function on holidays, and its visit will not leave either adults or children indifferent.

From December 23 to January 14 inclusive, a special program dedicated to the New Year and Christmas - “We draw in the Hermitage” will give unforgettable memories, charge you with magical festive mood and will prove to be quite a pleasant pastime for people of different ages.

By the way, on the first Thursday of every month the museum opens its doors to visitors completely free of charge, so the holiday is just around the corner - in 2018, the first free day falls on January 4.

During the New Year holidays, the Hermitage was visited by 95,559 people, which is almost 12,000 people a day.

During the same period in 2015, the Hermitage was visited by 80,826 people, an average of about 9,000 people per day. Moreover, on the traditional free day - the first Thursday of the month - the Hermitage was visited by 16,593 people! For comparison, on the same day last year, 8,826 people came to the museum. The most visited were January 5, 6 and 7 - 15,079, 14,601 and 16,593 people, respectively. During the holidays, in addition to the main exhibitions, the Hermitage hosted 17 temporary exhibitions.

Extended days

IN new year holidays The Hermitage was open until 21.00 for three days in a row. In addition to Wednesday and Friday, January 6 and 8, days when the Hermitage can always be visited in the evening, the museum made a gift to St. Petersburg residents and guests of the city - on Christmas Day, January 7, the museum was also open until 21.00. It was on these days that 42,753 people visited the Hermitage, which is approximately 45% of all visitors during the entire New Year holidays.

Free day

In 2016, the traditional free day - the first Thursday of the month - coincided with Christmas. On this day, the museum extended its work until 21 hours, which was reported more than once on the museum’s website and in in social networks. Unfortunately, in the morning there was a huge queue at the entrance to the Hermitage, but after 18 o’clock in the Main museum complex you could enter without queuing.

On this day, 16,593 people visited the Hermitage, 5,740 people visited the General Headquarters. The main headquarters is also part of the Hermitage, and now it presents famous collections impressionists and post-impressionists, Faberge memory rooms, contemporary art rooms, and much more. Please note that usually the queue at the General Headquarters is much shorter on any day (including free days). During the holidays, 24,671 people got acquainted with the exhibitions in the General Staff building - this is only 26% of total number visitors.

Problem with queues

The Hermitage apologizes to all those who had to stand in line on the frosty day of January 7 at the Main Museum Complex of the Hermitage. During the winter holidays we encountered force majeure circumstances - very coldy, because of which the ticket terminals were not working, and a large number of people wishing to get to the Hermitage on January 7. Please note that, in accordance with safety requirements, the Hermitage can accommodate 6,115 visitors at a time, so we could not let everyone who was freezing on the street inside the museum - after all, this is a matter of safety for both the visitors themselves and museum exhibits. We also cannot allow visitors into the museum without a ticket, even if it is free - this is a mandatory document, necessary, among other things, for the Hermitage’s reporting to the Ministry of Culture. In addition, do not forget that the Main Museum Complex is imperial palace, which is not intended to receive such large quantity people at the same time, and queues accumulate at the entrance to museums in all countries, including cold ones. We make every effort to ensure that our visitors feel comfortable when visiting the museum.

January 7 and 8 in the Big Courtyard Winter Palace free hot tea was offered to visitors standing in line (a story about this on the St. Petersburg TV channel). In addition, during the New Year holidays, the partners of the Our Peter museum opened additional cafes in the General Staff Building and the Rastrelli Gallery (along with a constantly operating Internet cafe).

It was decided to let children into the museum so that they would not stand and wait in the cold, and to gather them on the Ambassadorial Stairs until their parents bought tickets for themselves.

Once again, we draw your attention to the fact that in order to avoid standing in line at the Main Museum Complex, you can first visit the General Headquarters or the Winter Palace of Peter I. We also recommend, if possible, that those categories of visitors for whom admission to the museum is free not to visit the Hermitage on a free day always - pensioners of the Russian Federation, children of preschool and school age, students educational institutions, students (regardless of citizenship)!

Internet tickets

On the website of our partners www.hermitageshop.ru it is possible to buy a ticket online to avoid queues at the museum ticket office. During the New Year holidays, the Hermitage faced an unprecedented number of visitors who bought Internet tickets, and we were unable to cope with this situation. The e-Voucher must be exchanged for admission ticket to the museum at a special ticket office, which is at this moment only one. A line began to form at this ticket office, which (due to an oversight by the Hermitage staff) was joined by people standing at the ticket office for regular tickets. Another problem has arisen - buyers of online tickets, unfortunately, do not read the information on the voucher. In addition to the rules for exchanging a voucher for a ticket, it contains the addresses and contacts of the organization that sells tickets online. Problems with Internet tickets are solved by the employees of www.hermitageshop.ru, but almost none of the buyers contacted them. In addition, work is currently underway to optimize the use of Internet tickets. In the near future, tickets will no longer need to be changed; passage through the turnstiles will be carried out using barcodes. The possibility of opening a separate entrance for visitors with electronic tickets is also being considered.

The problem with speculators

The Hermitage has long been faced with speculators and fraudsters in the museum. They show particular impudence on days of free visits. Unfortunately, we cannot influence this - it remains on the conscience of these people. It is very difficult to catch such a person by the hand, much less punish him in any way (story about speculators on the Life78 TV channel). Dear visitors, do not buy tickets by hand, much less a place in the queue or cloakroom!
