If you want a holiday, go to the circus. A similar entertainment establishment can be found in any major modern city. The performers delight the audience with complex acrobatic performances, magic tricks, animal performances and other amazing tricks. Many people believe that only people born into families of circus dynasties can get into the circus arena. In fact, this is a big misconception. In order to become a circus artist, you need to graduate from a circus school in Moscow. Today, this is the only specialized educational institution in our entire country.

Is circus art a calling?

To spectators, the circus seems like a continuous holiday and magic. In fact, each performance is the result of hard training, nerves and pain. The work of circus performers involves great danger. Even experienced professionals in their field sometimes suffer serious injuries in the midst of their careers.

At its core, any genre of circus art is a symbiosis of complex sports and acting. How successful an artist will be depends largely on his self-control, artistry, and ability to communicate with the public. Many representatives of circus dynasties claim that one should come to work in this field only out of vocation. If your lifelong dream is a circus, it makes sense to think about how to get into a circus school in Moscow.

You can enroll in this educational institution after completing the ninth or eleventh grade of any secondary school. Applicants must understand that due to the specific nature of the profession, entrance tests consist of more than just general education exams. You must have at least basic choreographic or sports training. There is a circus section at the school today, admission to which will be introduced from the age of 5. There are similar institutions of additional education in many other cities of Russia.

Applicants involved in acrobatics, ballet, artistic and some other sports have a good chance of becoming circus performers. All these disciplines are quite complex, and it is believed that you can achieve success in them if you start teaching your child no later than 7 years old. Parents who dream of a circus career for their child should understand that intensive training can negatively affect academic performance in the general education school curriculum.

The history of the only circus school in Russia

In the fall of 1927, the People's Commissariat of Education of the USSR issued a resolution, according to which it was ordered to organize an institution for the professional training of circus performers in the capital of the state. The training was carried out in the format of courses lasting three years. Gradually the educational institution developed, and after some time it was reorganized into a technical school. Along with the new name, the circus school in Moscow received a building with a full-fledged arena. Quite quickly the educational institution earned itself a good reputation. The school changed its name several times. In 1987, the educational institution was once again renamed. The assigned name has survived to this day - State School of Circus and Variety Arts named after. M. N. Rumyantseva. Today the educational institution is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture.

Modern everyday life of a circus school

Since 1961, the circus school in Moscow has been training pop artists, speech and original genres. Today, this educational institution remains the only one of its kind in our country. Only here you can get a professional circus education. Every year a large number of applicants from all over the country dream of becoming GUTSEI students. The school is also famous for its teaching staff. The young generation is taught circus and variety disciplines by famous artists, as well as simply talented graduates of colleges and other cultural educational institutions.

Specialties and curriculum

GUTSEI trains circus performers of various genres. The most popular areas: acrobatics, balancing act, clowning, juggling, variety shows. Also at the school you can obtain the specialty of an assistant, assistant animal trainer, entertainer, costume designer or make-up artist. Applicants are recommended to choose the most interesting specialty for themselves before passing the entrance examination. The admissions committee usually evaluates the data of each person wishing to enroll in accordance with the requirements and specifics of the chosen profession.

During the course of training, students acquire highly specialized knowledge and skills related to their specialized specialty. All students admitted to the circus school in Moscow will have to study the world and Russian heritage of the circus. The scientific activities of the educational institution include research and classification of new programs. In addition, students of all specialties study circus pedagogy, basic safety and circus genres.

How to enter GUTSEI?

If you dream of being in the circus arena, it makes sense to visit a circus school in Moscow before submitting your documents. Address of the educational institution: Moscow, 5th street Yamskoye Pole, building 24. Responsible applicants who apply to the school in advance are interviewed. Even 2-3 months before the entrance tests, you can take preparatory courses at an educational institution, the cost of which will be only 1,500 rubles.

The circus school in Moscow has quite strict requirements for applicants. Training circus performers involves serious and dangerous physical activity. For this reason, even upon admission, each applicant must prove that he has no health problems. When submitting an application for admission to the educational application, medical certificates are attached to it. The required minimum: extracts from the psychoneurological and (that the owner of the document is not registered). A certificate from the supervising physician is also required.

Entrance tests

Enrollment is based on the results of entrance tests conducted in three rounds. The first exam includes an assessment of the competitor’s personal and physiological data, as well as his abilities within the chosen profession. The second stage is passing a medical commission. The third exam is the most difficult, during which applicants demonstrate their existing skills in choreography, acrobatics, and show their artistry. Particular attention is paid to the student’s ability to improvise and imagination.

Every applicant must understand that he did not come to an ordinary casting for a modeling agency, but to a circus school in Moscow. Photos in interesting images and the ability to recite a memorized piece of text will not help here. A real artist must interact with the audience without fear or anxiety, and also be able to instantly find a way out of any unexpected situations on stage.

After the exam in their specialty, applicants will be tested in general education subjects. Graduates of 9th grade write a dictation and take an oral exam in Russian language and literature. After 11th grade, the student will need to write an essay.

Famous graduates of GUTSEI

Dozens of artists who became famous throughout the world once graduated from a circus school in Moscow. The history of this educational institution with its famous names sounds impressive: M. Rumyantsev, O. Popov, L. Engibarov are all graduates of GUTSEI. Such talented artists as E. Kamburova, Zh. Bichevskaya, G. Khazanov and E. Shifrin also graduated from the circus school. According to the most conservative estimates, over the years of operation the educational institution has trained at least five thousand specialists in all areas of circus and variety arts.

The most common entrance exams:

  • Russian language
  • Mathematics (basic level)
  • Literature - specialized subject, at the choice of the university
  • History - at the choice of university
  • Creative exam - at the choice of the university

The formation and development of circus art is inextricably linked with the unfolding of the historical process, firmly fitting into the context of the formation of the very civilizational model of our time. The origin of circus art is associated with games, rituals of the dawn of humanity, the emergence of new crafts and professions. Various genres arose and became widespread in different historical eras, and the priorities of the audience changed along with the genres. Circus is one of the most democratic forms of art, formed on the basis of theatrical sports competitions and public square performances. The main character of the circus is an artist who overcomes seemingly insurmountable obstacles, whose tasks include poeticizing hard physical labor and creating generalized artistic images.

Admission conditions

The main form of creating artistic images of future circus performers are tricks, the organic synthesis of which with acting actions constitutes a number, and their totality, in turn, becomes a performance.

The creation of each individual trick requires the artist to be able to synthesize music, dance, pantomime, painting, and have plasticity of movements, which requires future graduates to develop a high level of creative abilities, knowledge and understanding of the country’s cultural heritage.

As entrance tests, applicants must pass the following disciplines:

  • Russian language,
  • story,
  • literature (profile).

Applicants are required to undergo an interview with representatives of the university in order to identify the development of creative abilities. Some universities put forward requirements for passing a creative exam as an additional one.

Where to apply

This direction is relatively new in the educational sphere of Russia.

Today, the following outstanding universities in the Russian Federation provide training for specialized specialists:

  • UNIK Institute;
  • East Siberian State Academy of Culture and Arts;
  • Oryol State Institute of Arts and Culture;
  • Belgorod State Institute of Arts and Culture;
  • State Classical Academy named after Maimonides.

Training period

The standard period of study (full-time) is 4 years, part-time, part-time - 5 years.

Disciplines included in the course of study

The creation of each circus performance program requires the joint efforts of directors, choreographers, artists, composers, and performers. Accordingly, preparing a trick, act, performance requires future specialists to be able to combine knowledge of theoretical disciplines of the field, including:

  • the art of circus directing;
  • acting skills, the basics of practical directing;
  • history of the circus;
  • basics of circus management;
  • basics of circus genres, including acrobatics, juggling, gymnastics;
  • special classes by genre;
  • circus pedagogy, etc.

Acquired skills

The main goal of circus art is to present to the viewer a person in all his power, perfection, and ability to overcome trials. Passion for the circus is based on a craving for a dream, a miracle, a desire to go beyond ordinary, everyday life. Circus performers demonstrate dexterity, strength, and courage to the audience, and the organization of the circus program itself is designed for spectators of all ages, skillfully alternating diverse acts.

Both the organization of the performance and the demonstration of tricks requires future artists to have a high level of development of certain professional competencies:

Job prospects by profession

University graduates are invited to work in domestic and foreign circus groups.

In addition, they can successfully engage in professional activities in the following positions:

  • actor,
  • acrobat,
  • circus artist,
  • illusionist
  • juggler,
  • stuntman,
  • circus director
  • producer,
  • gymnast,
  • show program director.

It is quite problematic to talk about stable payment in the creative industry, however, circus performers find themselves in a more advantageous position than other representatives of creative processions. When employed directly in their specialty in a circus troupe, an aspiring artist can count on a salary of $1000-1200 monthly. Separately, it should be noted that when touring, the payment increases. World-famous artists, for example, illusionists, can count on fabulous fees.

Prospects for professional development of graduates

Those bachelor's graduates who are determined to achieve heights in their chosen field can continue the process of studying in a master's program. The specialty is relatively new in our country, and masters of the profile will be in demand not only in the circus, but also in teaching. In addition, studying in a master's program will allow you to study circus art in detail, teach you how to organize truly unforgettable magic performances that will not only bring significant income, but also a certain fame. A master's degree does not require confirmation for employment abroad, which is also important for specialists in this field. If desired, studies can be continued in graduate school or doctoral studies in related areas.

“Variety and circus art”
educational program
for children from 6 – 13 years old
designed for 4 years of study

Saint Petersburg

2007

Explanatory note

In modern conditions of development of our society, there is a need to raise a generation of people who are healthy physically, morally and spiritually.

Due to its beauty and brightness, circus art can be most attractive to very young children, and they will want to become a participant in this bright and spectacular action. It is not for nothing that the circus, along with the theater, has its own ancient history, which makes it possible to introduce a young person to circus art and culture.

Throughout human history, the beauty of the human body has been a source of inspiration and has been glorified by poets and artists. In almost all cultures of the world, it has long remained the main human value.

Practicing circus art even now allows you to strive to achieve beauty and the ability to control your body to perfection. Constant training allows you to strengthen your child’s health, teach him to properly distribute the load during physical exercise, coordinate his movements, and cultivate will, patience and hard work. Activities in a group contribute to the moral growth of the child, the culture and ethics of relationships in the team, and the development of creative, artistic and stage abilities.

The educational program “Variety and Circus Art” has an artistic and aesthetic orientation, developed for 4 years of study for children aged 6-13 years. The content of the program allows the teacher to conduct training taking into account the age characteristics and physical abilities of the children, constantly diagnosing and monitoring the students’ results. The program cannot be “dead” if the team develops, the teacher’s experience grows, teaching methods are improved, and the educational aspect is thought out more clearly and interestingly. Students' interest in new trends in the world of variety and circus arts is maintained and developed. This leads to constant adjustment of the structure and volume, new sections of the program appear, and the range of activities of the team expands for the long term. The program allows for step-by-step performance monitoring. If necessary, quickly make adjustments to the educational process, promoting mutual understanding and co-creativity between the teacher, child and parents. A differentiated approach allows each child to constantly feel the care and support of the teacher, and instills self-confidence. This program can be used individually for disabled children who have shown an interest in circus arts. For children with basic physical training, the program provides for variability in the first year of study.

Purpose of the program:

Relevance of the program.

Acrobatics is one of the sports that harmoniously combines mental and physical development of a person. In addition to improving health, acrobatics and other circus genres have a huge aesthetic impact on children, broaden their horizons, helping them to understand the physical and spiritual capabilities of a person.

By working in a group, children not only receive the physical training necessary for this type of activity, but expand their knowledge of circus art, become more familiar with various genres, and become adherents of one of them.

This program allows all students to receive more harmonious development, cultivate personal qualities and develop the ability to communicate.

Organization of the educational process

The group includes children from 6 to 13 years old. The training program lasts 4 years.

At the end of each year of schooling the childa sheet of personal achievements is presented, which is the basis for enrolling him for the next year, as well as guidance for further individual improvement. After the fourth year, a certificate of completion of the training program in the Nevsky Cascade circus group is issued.

Lesson mode

1 year – classes are held 2 times a week for 1 hour (for children with basic training)

1 year – classes are held 2 times a week for 2 hours.

Year 2 – classes are held 2 times a week for 2 hours.

Children train in uniform clothing and shoes that do not restrict movement.

Admission conditions

All interested children aged 6 to 10 years are accepted into the team. Upon admission to the team, a medical certificate is required confirming the absence of contraindications for classes. An interview is conducted, which is the primary diagnosis of the basic physical characteristics of the children. Based on the results of this interview, children are enrolled in the appropriate year of study.

Step-by-step development of the program

The implementation of this program is carried out in stages and is designed for four years, each year has its own clearly defined purpose:

first year – general physical training and mastering basic exercises;

second year – mastering acrobatic elements and combinations;

third year – familiarization with circus genres, choice of genre;

fourth year – improving skills.

The team as an environment for development, learning and

education of the child's personality

No educational work will take place if there is no contact, respect and mutual understanding between the teacher and the child. This also applies to relationships with parents.

Often classes are structured in such a way as to provide an opportunity for team members to demonstrate their achievements, the correct execution of individual elements and compositions, and also to help the teacher in working with less successful children, instilling in them confidence in their own abilities.

At the same time, an individual approach to each child does not prevent the creation of a single, integral team, with its own traditions, which are formed over time.

The traditions of the group are the “Birthday all year round” holiday, which celebrates the birthdays of all the children of the group on the same day, and the “Debut” holiday, where the members of the group who performed for the first time receive congratulations. The “Acting Book” is also awarded there, where all his subsequent performances are recorded.

The “Nevsky Cascade” team interacts with other groups of the artistic department of the Palace of Children and Youth Creativity in preparing joint performances, trips, holidays such as New Year, KVN, sporting events, etc.

active assistance from senior team members to junior members.

creative trips

creation of a library on the history of circus art

the presence of conditions for personal development.

education of ethics of relations.

Inclusion of parents in the activities of a single team

To increase the effectiveness of the educational process of children, the support and assistance of parents is necessary. At the same time, traditional parent-teacher meetings, open classes and conversations are not enough for parents not only to understand the importance of what their child is doing, what he experiences in the learning process and how difficult it can be to train, but also to support the child during homework.

On the basis of the team, an aerobics group has started working for interested parents, where mothers not only train, but also learn how to perform some acrobatic elements that their children practice in classes. Parents become more physically prepared and also master professional terms. This allows them to provide specific help to their child. Now they attend children’s classes more often and with desire, their interest in the learning outcomes is growing, and they can sufficiently competently insure the child while practicing some elements at home.

Forms of organization of the educational process and teaching methods

Classes are conducted in groups and small groups. The main forms of work are: training, rehearsals, open and test classes, sports events, competitions and festivals, as well as creative meetings with professional artists and excursions to the circus.

During the classes, a variety of methods of working with children are used: verbal, visual, practical, reproductive, search, inductive, creative

(viewing and analysis of video recordings of the group’s performances at competitions and festivals, stories and conversations with students, demonstrations by the teacher; for the most successful development of the program, test and acting books are used, and visual cards with various complexes of acrobatic elements are used to record and control the performance of exercises).

At the end of each year of study, children are given a sheet of personal achievements, which is the basis for enrolling them in the next year of study. After 4 years of study under the program, a certificate of additional education is issued.

    Hula Hup

    You will need for work:

    1. 30 hula-hoops. Of these, 5 are main (working), the rest make up the “barrel”.
    2. colored self-adhesive glitter paper – 10 meters

    - 3 meters of paper for 5 main hula hoops. Color: gold or silver

    - 7 meters of multi-colored paper for the “barrel”

    1. transparent tape, 2 centimeters wide
    2. fishing line - 7 meters
    3. stationery scissors

    To design the 5 main hoops you will need 3 meters of glitter self-adhesive paper in the chosen color. The paper must be cut into strips 2 centimeters wide. Next, take a hula hoop and start gluing. You should peel off the protective layer from the self-adhesive paper and start sticking it onto the hula hoop. The paper should be placed tightly on the object and wrapped around the hula hoop without any distance. Each “step” of self-adhesive paper should overlap slightly with the previous one. After finishing pasting with a shiny layer, you should start wrapping with tape. The procedure should be similar to pasting with shiny paper.

    To decorate the “barrel” you will need 7 meters of self-adhesive paper. Each hula hoop must be pasted over in the same way as the main hoops. Next, the hula hoops must be formed into a “barrel”, that is, 25 hoops must be connected into a single object. To do this you need to take a fishing line. Secure it on both sides of the first hoop and then tie it with a knot around each hula on both sides. The line pitch from the hula hoops is 10 centimeters. At the last hula-hupa, the fishing line should be carefully secured.

    The props are ready for the performance.

    But in order to ensure that the hula-huppas do not lose their shiny and bright appearance during transportation, you need to sew a special case for them.

    For the case you will need:

    1. raincoat fabric: length 3 meters, width 80 centimeters
    2. sewing threads, scissors
    3. rubber cord and “stopper” fasteners.

    In order to make a cover, you need to cut the fabric into a “circle”. By sewing the two ends of the fabric together you will get the desired shape. It is necessary to process the edges of the fabric inside the cover, stitching them, and do not forget to leave room for inserting the cord. After processing the edges, take the cord and insert it into both sides of the case, put a stopper. Fasten them and the case is ready.

    Scheme for creating a cover for hula - hoops.

    1. connecting the fabric into one whole

    2. ready-made case

    Safety instructions when rotating hula hoops.

    When rotating hula hoops, the following safety precautions must be observed:

    1. it is necessary to keep distance between each other. The distance must be at least 2.5 meters.
    2. Practicing “breakaway” rotations (for example, rotations on the elbows) must be performed by 4 people in order to prevent the hula hoop from hitting partners.
    3. It is necessary to carefully listen to the rules for performing rotations in order to avoid inaccurate actions that can lead to injury.
    4. when practicing the following tricks:

    - lifting the hula-chuppah from the floor with your foot;

    - performing “pinwheel” and “hat” rotations

    It is necessary to use special elastic bandages in order to avoid straining the muscles of the ankle and hands.
