Time is now on the map. What is world time in watches

This article will focus on watches with a second time function, watches with GMT or world time functions. I travel often. Every time, arriving in a city that lies in a different time zone than Munich, twisting clockwise, most often, my Rolex Submariner, I think that it would be quite nice not to do this or to do it with a light click of a button. Over the past couple of years I have had the opportunity to try out some watches with a second time function and I can assure you that it is very convenient. Usually my watch preferences are more classic and simple type The Royal Oak is from Audemars Piguet, but world time watches have always fascinated me.

Such watches, by the way, can be useful not only for avid travelers, but also for those who simply constantly work with other countries.

Today, most watch manufacturers have at least one model with a GMT function. Below I have selected the world time watches that I personally like. All of the watches listed below have in-house movements and are in the price range from 3,195 to 8,800 euros.

Affordable luxury from Frederique Constant. This is precisely the motto that the Frederique Constant manufactory adheres to and, in my opinion, does it successfully. For 3.195 euros you get a beautiful watch classic style with second time function and in-house mechanism. Yes, exactly, with manufacturing. There are not many manufactories today that are ready to offer watches with such a set for such money.
Two models of Frederique Constant Classics Manufacture Worldtimer watches.

Both models are sold in a three-piece stainless steel case finished in finely polished rose gold. Case diameter 42 mm. The transparent sapphire crystal cover, retained in both models, allows the 26-jewel FC-718 in-house movement to be seen.
The movement of the first model - FC-718MC4H4 - is decorated with pearl graining and the Geneva waves pattern. The silver dial has a center guilloché design and is complemented by hand-polished black hands and Roman numerals.
An enlarged date window at 6 o'clock and a 24-hour disc with day/night indicator are adjacent to Roman numerals. Thanks to the Worldtimer function, the time in 24 of the world's largest cities is indicated simultaneously on the outer contour of the dial.
The watch's appearance is completed by a black alligator leather strap with a classic gold-plated buckle.

The second of these two models is the FC-718WM4H4. Offering all the same functions and characteristics as the first model, it differs from it in the central part of the dial, decorated with a silver map of the world. The hands of this watch are made in dark blue.
Additionally, the polished hands shine an elegant deep blue and the numerals glow in the dark.
Enlarged date window, day/night indicator and time display for major cities around the world. This model comes with a rich alligator leather strap. Brown. Both models of these watches are waterproof to five atmospheres (50 meters below sea level).
The in-house automatic movement has a power reserve of 42 hours.
The steel model with gold trim is limited to 1,888 pieces each and costs €3,195.

When considering watches with a second time indicator function, one cannot help but pass by the German brand Nomos and its Zurich Weltzeit model. Nomos watches are entirely made in-house. They also produce the mechanisms themselves.

One of the most “complicated” watches that Nomos makes is the Zurich Weltzeit model. This is a stainless steel watch with a diameter of 39.9 mm on the dial of which there is a ring with the names of 24 cities. At 3 o'clock there is a "Heimat" mark, which indicates home time. Using the button at 2 o'clock you can easily change the time zone.
Inside there is an in-house automatic movement - caliber ξ (Xi). The movement can be observed through the sapphire crystal back.
The price of Nomos Zurich Weltzeit is 4,200 euros.

Baume & Mercier Capeland Worldtimer

The Baume & Mercier Capeland Worldtimer is a more classic watch design, housed in a 44mm case and available in two color solutions: 18k rose gold or polished and brushed steel. The dial of the Capeland Worldtimer is designed in ash or milky shades.
Equipped with an in-house automatic movement that can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back, this watch is extremely easy to use. To set local time, just select the name of a city located in the time zone in which you are located, and set the number on the disk opposite the name of this city that corresponds to the current time zone. Having pulled out the crown and set the disc to the required position, the watch owner simply needs to set the time using the hands. By performing these quick operations and returning the crown to its original position, you can easily determine the time around the world by looking at the dial of your Capeland Worldtimer.
The price of this watch model in Germany is 6,610 euros.

The Rolex GMT-master II was first presented at Baselworld in 2013.

The GMT-master II features a bi-directional rotating bezel with a 24-hour graduated scale and a special hand that rotates the dial in 24 hours, in addition to the regular hour, minute and second hands. This additional 24-hour hand shows the time in a reference time zone (such as where the wearer lives), which is determined by graduations on the bezel.
When traveling, local time is read on the dial using the hour hand, which is easily adjusted by rotating the crown through an ingenious mechanism. This adjustment is made independently of the minute and second hands and does not affect the hand indicating the time in another time zone. Thus, the traveler can find out both the local time and the time at the point of departure at any time.
In addition, the rotating bezel allows you to determine the time in a third time zone.

ETERNAL CERACHROM BEZEL
The GMT-Master II's bidirectional rotating bezel features a cerachrom disc with a 24-hour graduated scale. This disc is made from ultra-durable and incredibly hard corrosion-resistant ceramic that is not only impervious to environmental influences, but is amazingly scratch-resistant. Its color does not change under the influence of ultraviolet rays. The numerals and markers, engraved in ceramic, are coated with a thin layer of platinum or gold, applied using PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) technology, patented by Rolex.
In addition to its high functionality and technical qualities, the bezel of the GMT-Master II makes this watch completely unlike any other.

The GMT-Master II is powered by Caliber 3186, a self-winding movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the caliber 3186 is certified Swiss Chronometer, awarded to ultra-precise watches that have successfully passed testing by the Official Swiss Institute of Chronometry (COSC). Its design, which is the same for all movements in the oyster collection, gives this model incomparable reliability.
The price of this watch in Germany is 7.250 euros

The Ulysse Nardin Dual Time Manufacture Watch is the most recent watch of all the watches listed and perhaps the easiest to use watch of all in this article. They were presented at an exhibition in Basel this year.
You can find several photographs of this watch, taken by me in Basel.
New model caliber UN-334 with a self-winding system, is completely designed and assembled within the walls of the manufactory. Indicators can be adjusted in both directions by simply pressing buttons on the body. The date display in the double window is also adjustable forward and backward. The silicon escapement is another achievement that is within the control of the manufacture's masters, but inaccessible to most watch manufacturers.
Time adjustment forwards and backwards occurs using the “+” and “-” buttons located on the watch case. While home time is indicated in 24-hour format in a window next to the 9 o'clock position, local time is adjusted using the buttons on the case located next to the 8 and 10 o'clock markers. The convenient format allows you to make settings without removing the watch from your wrist. Calendar indicators are also adjusted in both directions. The water resistance of the model is 30 meters.

The in-house caliber UN-334 features a 48-hour power reserve, silicon escapement and balance wheel. The oscillation amplitude of 4 Hz, the patented balance spring, called “Silicon 1.1.1.”, guarantees high precision. More than 10 years ago, thanks to the hard work of Ulysse Nardin's developers, an engineering debut took place: lightweight, durable, lubrication-free and subject to wear less than any other material used in the watch industry, silicon had the effect of a bomb exploding. Its manufacturing process is quite complex, so making silicon parts remains out of reach for mass production. They decided not to hide such an innovative mechanism and its operation can be observed through the transparent anti-reflective sapphire crystal on the back of the case.

Modern technologies are combined with the classic design of the model: the case with a diameter of 42 mm is made of stainless steel and 18-karat rose gold and is complemented by an alligator leather strap or a stainless steel or rose gold bracelet with a folding clasp. A silver or black dial adds sophistication to the watch and makes it an integral part of the image of its owner, whether it is an everyday business meeting or an important evening event.

World time in a wristwatch (watch with a GTM function) is a bezel with a scale of time zones (1-24) or cities printed on it.

The first, most popular world time indicator was invented by watchmaker Louis Cortier back in the 1930s. Its famous “world timer” is still used by the famous watch houses Girard-Perregaux, Patek Philippe , Vacheron Constantin, etc.

It happens that the outer ring shows the names of cities, the middle ring indicates the time of day in these cities, and in the center is the dial itself with large numbers. To find out the time in a specific city, you need to press a special button on the left side of the case.

Some Men's Watch counting down world time
do not have a button to switch time zones, but external
The ring rotates using the crown. Second ring
with 24-hour markings adjusts to the selected city.
The main thing is not to be shy about reading the instructions included with the watch.
Once you have mastered the algorithm for switching to another city, you can easily
perform it in a couple of movements.

You can do without additional buttons or crowns. For example, many watch houses display the world time scale on the bezel. You can very easily adjust the readings with just one turn of the bezel. In the vast majority of cases, such models can indicate the time in three time cities (zones) at once; for this purpose, an additional central hand is provided in their design.

Some inexperienced people sometimes mistake such watches for diving watches. But watches with GTM function have a number of obvious differences. The bezel has a 24-hour marking, not a minute one, and it rotates only in one direction, and not both, like a dive watch.

In addition to the world time indicator, there is an indicator
time in the second time zone. This is usually additional
small dial with a rotating 24-hour hand
format. Or will it be a separate digital LED display
in quartz electronic watch. You can just customize it
for a while in the city you are interested in. That is, large arrows will be
indicate your current time: here and now. And the pointer
in the second time zone (in the small dial), will show
What time is it now in the city or country you left?

Why do you need such a function in a watch as world time?

This will be very useful to you, for example, when traveling abroad. Either you are an active traveler, or business trips await you if you are coming from one end of our great country, located in 9 time zones, in another. Wristwatches with world time (with a GMT function) are created especially for travelers, keeping time based on the readings of several world cities (time zones) at once.

Actually, no one wants neatly adjusted
testimony of their wristwatch transfer to another time
city.

Fidel Castro came up with something extraordinary (in the spring of 1963
year he went on a long trip around the USSR). And on my hand
the Cuban leader sported two expensive watches at once Rolex !
And most likely, one watch on Fidel’s hand showed Moscow
time, others – “home” Cuban.

Really, in those years there were no such clocks with world time?
At luxury watches" Rolex"there is a model that shows time
in two different time zones - this was the case in the early 60s.
Perhaps Castro did not know about this?

World time watches are now produced in huge quantities, with different options. Today you can choose the model that best suits your taste and financial capabilities. Among other things, watches with a GMT function differ in the way they display time in the second zone, so in this regard the choice also depends on your preferences.

The most important thing is to keep it interesting, rich life, full of travel and new experiences, in which a watch with a GMT function will definitely come in handy.

World time watch

Traveling to another country is always a kind of stress. A person at least encounters strangers cultural traditions. And on top of everything else, he often also needs to get used to the fact that his wristwatch with carefully adjusted readings has to be set to another time. The same problem awaits a traveler or business traveler if he travels from one end of a country located in several time zones to the other. Especially for such people, wristwatches with world time are created, counting seconds according to the readings of several time zones at once.

Determining world time is considered a complex function. Ideally, such complications should not only amaze with their beauty and originality, but also have some utilitarian significance. One of these functions is the world time display.
Such a useful complication will be useful not only to travelers who travel around the world. A watch with a world time function will also be useful for those who do business with companies from different countries. Agree, it’s not very convenient to perform mathematical calculations every time before making a call to a business partner located in a different time zone.

By the way, the time difference does not always cause inconvenience. For example, Russian-speaking residents of Latvia and Lithuania were even happy when in 1989 these countries were transferred to a different time zone. For them, this story had a significant plus: New Year they began to meet twice - the first time according to the new local time, and the second time according to the usual domestic time. However, this was not the last surprise. Russia presented the next surprise to the emigrants by refusing to switch to summer time in 2011. The time difference with Latvia and Lithuania, accordingly, increased by another hour. Now, after a two-hour feast following the appeal Russian President, not everyone can remember the speeches of the heads of Latvia and Lithuania. In such a situation, the international clock is powerless, although, in general, there is nothing tragic about it.
However, a sophisticated reader will wince in disbelief: they say, in the classics, heroes ride around the world without any devices, and nothing. So let's first figure out when and why people began to divide the planet into time zones, creating the need to invent clocks with world time.

Who needed time zones?

The emergence of time zones, by the way, is associated precisely with travel. Until the 19th century, people generally managed well without this excess, because high-speed transport was not yet in use. Time flowed slowly, there was nowhere to rush, and the clock was counted based on local solar time, determined by geographic longitude. Consequently, a watch with a world time function was not very necessary - when it is light, then it is morning.
However, the pace of life gradually accelerated. For England, the 19th century was marked by an unprecedented development of the railway network. Now it was possible to quickly travel from one end of the country to the other, but the problem was that there was no correct train schedule. The fact that each city lived according to its own time provoked various inconsistencies. And if waiting an extra hour for a train at the station is not such a tragedy, then hardly anyone wanted to get into an accident due to temporary delays.

The railway companies put forward a demand to create one common time zone in England. The time was checked according to Greenwich (in English - GMT, or Greenwich Mean Time). WITH light hand The creators of the innovation - Dr. William Hyde Wollaston and Abraham Follett Osler - it received its name by analogy with the meridian passing through the place near London where the famous Greenwich Observatory was previously located. It was for this reason that it was long called “London time”. The most accurate chronometers were used to synchronize the clocks in all cities, but it was still a long way off to create a wristwatch with a world time function.

By the way, on back side The Earth opposite Greenwich is located on the 180th meridian, indicating the change of day. This is a natural time machine: by crossing this conventional line, you can go a day forward or back.

In 1840, the Greenwich time system began to be used in the Great Western railway. Seven years later, the practice had spread throughout Britain.

Following England, the time zone system was introduced in countries North America. It began to be used in the USA in 1883. And the following year an international conference was held in Washington, after which the time zone system was introduced throughout the world. As a result, the entire Earth was divided into 24 belts, each of which included 15 degrees of longitude. Within one zone the time is the same, but the difference between neighboring ones is 1 hour. This is how travelers acquired a problem that a wristwatch with world time can solve.

There are a great variety of similar accessories today. Watches with GMT function from different manufacturers may vary slightly in the display method. Each person can choose the system that is most convenient for him to use. Let's take a closer look at clocks with world time of various configurations.

More scales, good and different

Patek Philippe

Probably the most logical option for a watch with a GMT function is a model that has an additional scale. This is exactly the path chosen by the craftsmen of Patek Philippe. Its world time watch, called the Patek Philippe World Time, indicates dual time using a scale surrounding the dial. It bears the names of 24 cities located in different time zones. This can be done by pressing a special button on the left side of the case. Then there is another scale that will help the owner determine which cities are day and which are night at a particular time. In the center of the three-zone dial is a naturalistic enamel image of the globe.

The harmonious operation of all three segments is ensured by the ultra-thin automatic caliber 240 HU with the Hallmark of Geneva. Its name represents the first letters of the words "heure universelle", which translates as "world time". This mechanism was invented by watchmaker Louis Cottier back in the 30s of the 20th century. He has two characteristics. Firstly, its micro-rotor is recessed into platinum. Secondly, the part of the mechanism responsible for displaying world time is isolated from the main system. In practice, this means that changing time zones does not affect the accuracy of the move.

Patek Philippe World Time watches are available in white and yellow gold cases with a diameter of 39.5 mm. Don't let the apparent simplicity of the design fool anyone - this is a truly chic model. For example, one of its variations - Patek Philippe Model 2523 Heures Universelles - was sold for as much as 2 million 890 thousand dollars. Thus, it found itself in the top of the most expensive watches in the world.

Longines

The mechanism of the Longines Master Collection GMT model operates on a similar principle. This world time watch has a very simple design. Their round steel case has a diameter of 38.5 mm. You can choose either a metal or leather strap depending on your preference. As in the model from Patek Philippe, here the monochrome dial is divided into three segments. The outer ring shows the names of the cities, the middle ring indicates the time of day in these populated areas, well, in the center is the dial itself with large Roman numerals and a date window.

The Longines Master Collection GMT men's watch is based on the classic Longines caliber 635. It is not associated with a time zone mechanism, so it works flawlessly in any time zone for up to 38 hours without winding.
Watches with GMT function Longines Master Collection have, according to many experts, an extremely successful structure. They are extremely easy to use. The Longines Master Collection GMT does not have a button to change time zones, but the outer ring is rotated by the crown. The second ring with 24-hour markings is adjusted to the selected city. The main thing is not to be shy about reading the instructions included with the Longines Master Collection GMT model, even though men don’t like it. Having mastered the algorithm for switching to another time zone, a person can easily perform it in a couple of movements. And the presence of a date display makes this international watch even more attractive to travelers.

Girard-Perregaux

A couple more models in a similar style for lovers of stylish, high-tech accessories are watches with GMT function Girard-Perregaux WW.TC Dark Night and WW.TC Shadow. These are stylish black chronographs with ceramic cases and rubber straps. Unlike previous models, this world time watch is based on the specially developed caliber GP03387 and also features a flyback chronograph function. Here, however, it is not the outer segment with the names of cities that rotates, but a ring with hour markings, but the principle is, in general, the same. To adjust the time zone at 9 o'clock, the Girard-Perregaux WW.TC Dark Night and Girard-Perregaux WW.TC Shadow models are equipped with a special crown. This international watch is not only very functional, but also so striking that it will not go unnoticed.

IWC

The Swiss manufacturer IWC has apparently heeded the popular saying that laziness is actually the engine of progress. Seriously speaking, the masters took care of those travelers who are not at all comfortable with technology. The IWC Spitfire UTC (Silver) and Spitfire UTC world time watches have windows on their dials that display the current Greenwich Mean Time. So in this case you don’t need to twist or adjust anything, but you will have to count. But such international watches will develop both memory and mathematical skills.
Both models from IWC have round steel cases with a diameter of 39 mm and leather or steel straps. Their self-winding movements protect against electromagnetic radiation a kind of casing made of soft magnetic iron. At the same time, the IWC Spitfire UTC (Silver) and Spitfire UTC models are not just watches with a world time function, they also have a date display in the window at the 3 o’clock position.

As you can see, what is missing can always be simply completed. But this does not mean that watches with a GMT function, which have a scale as an indication method, are simpler than their analogues in terms of technical performance.

Lost in time? Turn the bezel!

Some watchmakers prefer not to clutter the dial with unnecessary details. There is enough space on the case for an additional scale. For example, it can be placed on the bezel. In many ways, this design is more convenient. For example, you can do without additional buttons or crowns. You can adjust the readings with one turn of the bezel. In the vast majority of cases, such models can indicate time in three time zones at once.
By the way, such watches with a world time function are sometimes mistaken by some inexperienced people for diving watches. Indeed, it is easy for an ignorant person to get confused, since they look very similar. But watches with GTM function have a number of obvious differences. In particular, their bezel markings are not minute, but 24-hour, and it turns only in one direction, and not in both, like divers’. These international watches are easy to use and look masculine due to the wide bezel ring.

Rolex

If you are going to travel not for the purpose of diving, but to establish business contacts, the ideal option for such a case is a Rolex GMT Master II world time watch. This model has several varieties in cases measuring 40x12.15 mm, made of steel, white, yellow gold or a combination of these. The Rolex GMT Master II is a GMT watch equipped with a movement based on the automatic caliber 3185. The model has a date window at the 3 o'clock position.

The Rolex GMT Master II world time watch has a fairly wide ceramic bezel with 24-hour markers. It rotates in both directions and has 24 fixed positions. To ensure that the time in a second time zone can be determined accurately, the bezel's rotating mechanism is equipped with a durable spring. This allows it to transition from one mode to another with a distinctive click, with virtually no wear and tear over time. In addition, the international Rolex GMT Master II watch can indicate time in a third time zone. For this purpose, their design provides an additional central arrow.

The Rolex GMT Master II is more than just a GMT watch. This is a kind of indicator of prestige. These watches are functional, stylish and have unrivaled reliability. This also applies to the mechanism itself, which can operate without additional winding for 48 hours, and to the comfortable bracelet with a clasp with a patented Easylink link, which expands by 5 mm if necessary. It can lengthen the bracelet just enough so that it does not put pressure on your swollen wrist. To test the reliability of the Easylink link, it was subjected to laboratory tests in which the clasp was opened and closed several thousand times in a row under extreme conditions. From this we can conclude that the international Rolex GMT Master II watch is also very comfortable.

Breitling

A similar method of indicating the second and third time zones is typical for the Breitling Superocean GMT model. This international watch has a 41mm steel case that protects its automatic movement from moisture at a depth of up to 500 m. The dial of the Breitling Superocean GMT is framed by a powerful bezel made of molded rubber. It is equipped with a 24-hour clock and can rotate in both directions. To indicate the time in a third time zone, the international Breitling Superocean GMT watch is equipped with an additional central hand.

This model is equipped with a Breitling Caliber 32 self-winding movement with 21 jewels, certified by the Swiss Chronometry Institute COSC. It is extremely accurate and reliable. Plus, this GMT watch looks incredibly stylish on your wrist. Instead of a classic steel bracelet, the Breitling Superocean GMT can be worn on a rubber strap. It matches perfectly with the textured VolcanoBlack dial. The international Breitling Superocean GMT watch will especially appeal to those who prefer a military style and love active recreation.

Chopard

And those who like it more strict style, can choose the Chopard L.U.C. Pro One GMT, which is slightly larger than similar watches from the Breitling brand - the steel case measures 42x13.74 mm. Its automatic movement has a 65-hour power reserve, a date display and a chronometer function. International watches Chopard L.U.C. The Pro One GMT is water-resistant to 300m and features a solid steel rotating bezel with 24-hour markers and a central third time zone hand. Stylish appearance This model is given the combination of white metal, leather strap and dark guilloche dial.

Omega

Of course, in this section we cannot fail to mention the Omega Seamaster Professional watch with GMT function. Of course, James Bond himself, in the person of Price Brosnan and Daniel Craig, trusted their reliability. This international watch also features an independent central hand that rotates one full day and a stylish 24-hour rotating bezel. of blue color. The Omega Seamaster Professional model differs from its analogues by a special system for correcting readings. The GMT function of this watch is controlled by two side buttons. When you press them, the central hand makes a jump of 15 degrees, that is, it moves 24ths of the dial back or forward. The Omega Seamaster Professional world time watch looks elegant on your wrist. It has a miniature steel case with a diameter of 28 mm and a blue dial with a guilloche finish. If the prestige of the brand is important to you, you can confidently rely on good name Omega Seamaster Professional.

Azimuth

International watch Azimuth Sea-Hum 3TZ (3Time Zone) from the Xtreme-1 collection is also in blue color scheme. Their 45mm steel case has a sleek design. However, they don't look boring at all thanks to the dark blue rubber strap. The same color has a rotating bezel with 24-hour markings, allowing you to read the time in a second time zone. A watch with a GMT function Azimuth Sea-Hum 3TZ (3Time Zone) also has an additional central hand for reading in the third zone. It is extremely convenient that this model also has a second scale for 24 hours. It is located around the perimeter of the dial. The Azimuth Sea-Hum 3TZ (3Time Zone) international watch can also indicate the date using a window located between the “4” and “5 o’clock” marks. This position is also very convenient, since it does not block the indexes, which makes reading the readings much easier. Another undoubted advantage of the Azimuth Sea-Hum 3TZ (3Time Zone) model is its impressive water resistance - up to 500 m. This watch with a world time function can be called a shining example how amazing functionality can be combined with a rather sleek design.

The only disadvantage, and even then a conditional one, of models with a similar design can be considered the need to thoughtfully delve into the principle of adjusting the bezel. However, it will help to cope with this overwhelming task detailed instructions, which is required to accompany all watches with a GMT function from prestigious manufacturers. If you can’t figure out the intricacies of the functioning of this system with its help, you can turn to the inhabitants of various watch blogs for help. Among the users there will definitely be someone with the same model as the traveler who is not friendly with the instructions.

To the second time zone follow the arrow

But the most in a simple way determining the time in the second time zone can confidently be called an additional central hand. It’s true that you don’t need to calculate or adjust anything. You just need to place the arrow in desired position, and the dial clearly shows readings for two time zones at once.

Graham

For lovers of accessories sporty style Graham created the original Chronofighter Oversize GMT Blue & Red. This world time watch has a fairly large steel case with a diameter of 47 mm. It is decorated with a static welt with 24-hour markings, painted in two colors. As the name of the model suggests, it is blue and red. The Graham Chronofighter Oversize GMT Blue & Red chronograph has the Incabloc lever, characteristic of time meters of this brand, which protects the crown from external influences, capable of misleading the readings. This international watch is powered by the automatic caliber G1733. To make it easy to read, the black dial has silver markers and hands coated with Super-LumiNova. Thanks to this, the Graham Chronofighter Oversize GMT Blue & Red GMT watch allows the owner to check the time in two time zones at once, even in poor visibility conditions.

Panerai

Some manufacturers prefer not to include an additional 24-hour scale on the case bezel. For example, the Panerai brand offers a reliable model Special Edition Luminor GMT Regatta, made in a laconic style. This international watch is a true rarity as it is produced in a limited edition of only 300 pieces. The Panerai Special Edition Luminor GMT Regatta was dedicated to the world sports academy called Laureus, which once a year presents the World Sports Awards for achievements in the field of sports. This award is so prestigious that it is often called nothing less than a sports Oscar.

The international Panerai Special Edition Luminor GMT Regatta watch is equipped with an automatic caliber with a power reserve of 42 hours. The steel case of this model with a diameter of 44 mm with a sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating protects the mechanism from water at a depth not exceeding 300 m. On the round dial of this model, complemented by a separate miniature counter for the second hand, above the standard markings there is an additional scale on 24 hours. It is with its help that the additional central hand of the Panerai Special Edition Luminor GMT Regatta Regatta counts the time in the second time zone. All indexes and the ends of the hands are coated with luminophore, which makes the use of the Panerai Special Edition Luminor GMT Regatta comfortable even in poor visibility. This watch with world time function, among other things, also indicates the date.
By the way, if you are not lucky enough to purchase one of the three hundred copies of the Panerai Special Edition Luminor GMT Regatta, do not rush to despair. This Italian brand can offer travelers other watches with a GMT function. For example, the Panerai Radiomir GMT/Alarm model has a 42mm steel case with a transparent case back and a power reserve of as much as 47 hours. This world time watch has 12-hour markers around the dial and an additional central hand to indicate the time in a second time zone. The hour markers and the tips of the hands, like the previous model, are coated with phosphor.

The international Panerai Radiomir GMT/Alarm watch has two crowns on the right side of the case. The one located opposite the 2 o'clock mark is responsible for the indications of the hands. The alarm can be set using the crown at the 4 o'clock position. This useful feature makes the Panerai Radiomir GMT/Alarm absolutely indispensable when traveling. Such watches with GNT function will not allow the owner to get confused in time zones or oversleep an important meeting.

Jaeger-LeCoultre

The international watch Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT will make an indelible impression primarily on lovers of luxury cars. This model was created by the manufactory for the British company Aston Martin. When you look at it, the first thing that catches your eye is the chic tourbillon located at the bottom of the skeletonized dial. Its carriage, made of aluminum and titanium, weighs only 0.28 grams. Continuing the automobile analogy, Jaeger-LeCoultre craftsmen made the appearance of the tourbillon similar to the radiator of a car. In order to fully reveal this luxury, the Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT international watch had to be equipped with a “jumping” hand for the date indicator. At the bottom of the dial, the scale with hour markers is interrupted, and the hand jumps from the “5” mark directly to “7”, so as not to block the tourbillon. The hand, which serves to count the time in the second time zone, is made skeletonized for the same reason. The 24-hour scale is located around the perimeter of the dial. In addition, the design includes a time of day indicator made of black aluminum.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT world time watch has a fairly large case with a diameter of 44 mm. It's made from stylish combination black and gold ceramics. The watch is equipped with an in-house JLC caliber 988 with a self-winding function that can function smoothly for 8 days. This international watch comes with a black porous leather strap with stitching. white.

As can be judged from these examples, international watches with an indicator in the form of an additional central hand are, as a rule, sports models. They are extremely convenient because they do not require complex calculations or adjustments to determine the time in the second zone.

One dial is good, but two is better

For those who fundamentally do not want to study complicated instructions and make calculations, there is the simplest method of indication - the second dial. It must be said that from a technical point of view, this design is much more complex than previous options. However, for the owner, such an international watch is a real treasure. With one glance at the dial you can quickly and accurately find out the readings in both needed by a person time zones.
However, do not think that watchmakers were upset when faced with such a task. For most of them, the opportunity to create such a watch with GMT function is another reason to demonstrate their skills. So the masters are trying, inventing what they can do. The result is very different international watch designs.

A.Lange & Sohne

One of the most elegant models equipped with a second dial is the A.Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone. These are international watches in elegant round cases with a diameter of 41.9 mm, made of platinum, yellow or rose gold. The name of this model can be read in two ways. Naturally, it would be more logical to call it “24 Time Zones” based on the number of time zones. Unit in the name in in this case reminds us that this international watch is based on the flagship model from A.Lange & Sohne Lange called Lange 1.

At its heart is the Caliber L031.1 movement, which is manually wound and has a power reserve of 72 hours. On the left side of the dial there is a large counter at 12 o'clock to indicate local time. This international clock also indicates the date, which is displayed in a special window. On the right is a 12-hour counter for the time in the second time zone. Unlike models with an additional hand or a rotating bezel, it is not a separate module that is responsible for it, but a full-fledged second mechanism. It controls not only the operation of the hands, but is also responsible for the operation of a miniature counter indicating the time of day. By the way, the main dial of the model is also equipped with the same.

In addition, the second mechanism controls the operation of the time zone indication system. It is a rotating ring located around the perimeter of the overall dial of the A.Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone model, which is activated by pressing a button on the left side of the case, located at the 8 o’clock position. You can adjust the readings on the additional dial by pressing it several times in a row, or, without releasing the button, adjust the hands using the crown.

Cuervo y Sobrinos

However, everything ingenious, as we know, is simple. It is this principle that seems to have guided the masters of the Cuervo y Sobrinos company when they created their watches with the GMT function. The Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente Dualtime model consists of two independent movements housed in a rectangular case measuring 30.5 x 52 mm. U various options This model is made of white, pink or yellow gold.

On the dial, one below the other, there are two independent counters indicating hours and minutes in different time zones. Each of them is equipped with its own self-winding movement based on the ETA 2000.1 caliber. This international watch is extremely easy to use. There is nothing to push or turn - there are two crowns on the right side of the case, with which you can adjust the readings of each dial individually.
According to the Cuervo y Sobrinos tradition, these stylish international watches are sold in a humidor, so this model can be an extremely successful and original gift.

Raymond Weil

We see a similar design from the Raymond Weil brand in the Don Giovanni Cosi Grande Two Time Zones model. You may think that these international watches have an extremely simple design, but do not be fooled.

The steel case of this model measures 50 x 37 mm. Under the sapphire crystal there are two dials. The lower one, equipped with a second hand, is used to determine the time in the main zone. But the top one, divided into 24 hours, just indicates the time in the second time zone. The main highlight of the Don Giovanni Cosi Grande Two Time Zones is a unique mechanism created specifically for the Raymond Weil company. It has a 40-hour power reserve and a date counter.

Jaeger-LeCoultre

However, the most unusual watches with a GMT function and a second dial were created by the masters of the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufactory. The Reverso Duoface model has a “two-faced” body that can be turned over. On one side there is a classic white dial for the Reverso series. There is an additional seconds hand at the 6 o'clock position. On the reverse side of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface case there is a dark gray dial with hour and minute hands. A 24-hour counter is placed at the 6 o'clock position, allowing you to count the time in the second zone. In other words, one dial can be set to local time, and the other can be adjusted to a second time zone. Crossing the border of the zone, we turn the case and get a second wristwatch.

Despite its apparent simplicity, the design of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface is extremely complex. It is equipped with two pairs of hands, which actually rotate in different directions independently of each other, but are controlled by a single mechanism. The peculiarity of this cunning JLC 854 caliber is the presence of a special module that allows you to simply disconnect all other hands from the mechanism when adjusting the readings.

IceLink

International watches from California IceLink 6 Timezone Mechanical are also equipped with more than one dial. This chic model has six of them. These miniature cell dials are located on a rectangular case with sides of 62.7 and 40.2 mm. U different options The IceLink 6 Timezone Mechanical model comes in white or rose gold, and some of the brand's particularly dapper international watches also feature a diamond bezel. The case is slightly curved to fit more comfortably on your wrist. The back cover has two windows through which you can view the mechanism.
The IceLink 6 Timezone Mechanical watch with GMT function is equipped with an automatic movement of a non-standard rectangular shape. It controls six independent dials at once using special cone-shaped gears. In the center of the side edges are the crowns, which relate to the entire mechanism as a whole. There are four more with which you can adjust the readings on individual dials.
By the way, watches with the GMT function IceLink 6 Timezone Mechanical are designed for only five time zones. One of the dials counts local time, the second displays seconds, and the other four, equipped with time of day indicators, can be adjusted to a specific time zone. These crowns operate independently.

By the way, watches with the GMT function IceLink 6 Timezone Mechanical are designed for only five time zones. One of the dials counts local time, the second displays seconds, and the other four, equipped with time of day indicators, can be adjusted to a specific time zone. So the IceLink 6 Timezone Mechanical international watch is not just a luxurious, solid accessory, but also a very useful device.
For those who want even more luxury, a special line has been developed - IceLink 6 Timezone Snow. Manufacturers propose to read the postscript to the name of this model “snow” as “diamond blizzard”. This international watch also has a gold rectangular case divided into six dial cells. Five of them, as in the previous version, are adjusted to the time in different time zones. But in the sixth cell there are no counters, but a sparkling scattering of small diamonds rolls under the sapphire glass. In this case, the craftsmen sacrificed a small fraction of the functionality of the IceLink 6 Timezone Snow model for the sake of beauty. The owner only needs to shake the hand wearing this international watch slightly, and a miniature precious snowstorm will rise on his wrist.

Having examined these models, we can conclude that there can be a lot of options for such time meters. However, one thing is certain - such watches with a GMT function are very convenient, since the readings for both time zones are clearly visible even with a quick glance at the dial. For such models there are no complex algorithms for adjusting or counting readings, which means they are very easy to use. But for masters, such watches with an international time function are a way to show the truly exquisite precision of their skills and a special reason for pride. The mechanisms of such models can be incredibly complex to implement. That is why, by creating such international watches, craftsmen have the opportunity to flaunt their skills.

Watchmakers are not looking for easy ways

Among the watches that can indicate time in different zones, there are also real masterpieces, comparable in execution to works of art. Of course, you won’t take these on business trips; they are generally not easy to get, because they are usually made in limited editions. Let's consider what options watchmakers offer us, besides standard scales and hands.

Ulysse Nardin

Truly one of the most unusual models- the work of the famous watchmaker Ludwig Oeschlin. The international watch Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck became a kind of continuation of the legendary “Trilogy of Time” collection, which appeared almost two decades ago. This model not only indicates the time in different zones. Its main function is to reflect the relationship between our planet, the Moon and the Sun, as well as the influence of gravity of the activity of the star and the Earth's satellite on the ebb and flow of the tides.

The dial of the Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck model is divided into several rotating discs. In the center there is a convex enamel image of the Earth. The UN-106 self-winding movement, designed for 50 hours of battery life, rotates the dial discs, reflecting the movement of the Moon around our planet and the apparent movements of the Sun across the sky. They make a full revolution in a day. At the same time, using a special scale, the international Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck watch reflects the interaction of the Moon and the Sun. Using them you can track the current phase and dynamics of the tides. This unique mechanism is Ulysse Nardin's own development and uses the latest achievements of craftsmen. For example, silicon is used to make the anchor mechanism and the hair of the balance spring.
Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck watches with GMT function do not have any additional accessories to determine the time in the second zone. You can find out the exact readings by simply pressing a button located on the left side of the case. In this case, the arrow itself will jump to the desired position.

The international Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck watch is limited to just 500 pieces. Their case is quite large - 47 mm in diameter. It is made of rose gold. This one is especially impressive a precious metal looks great paired with a leather strap dark blue. According to Oyshlin, both men and women can wear the Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck international time watch.

Greubel Forsey

The Swiss brand Greubel Forsey presented its extraordinary version of a watch with a GMT function. The model called Greubel Forsey GMT co-ordinate World Time complication has an extremely unusual way display time in a different time zone. For this purpose, a miniature globe is used, built into the watch case at the 8 o'clock position. The Earth model is made of titanium and painted blue. To determine time in different zones, there is a 42-hour scale around the globe, divided into day and night sectors. The function of the arrow in this case is performed by the South Pole. In this case, the readings are counted counterclockwise. You can switch belts by pressing a button located on the left side of the case. The second time is also displayed on the reverse side of the case of the Greubel Forsey GMT co-ordinate World Time complication.

The local time can be read by a miniature counter moved to the 1 o'clock position. Nearby is a scale for the remote second hand. The international Greubel Forsey GMT co-ordinate World Time complication watch is also equipped with an unusual semicircular 72-hour power reserve indicator with a retrograde hand. At the 5 o'clock position there is a complex tourbillon consisting of 87 parts.

This model impresses not only with its stunning, unique complications, but also with its chic design. The international Greubel Forsey GMT co-ordinate World Time complication watch is made of 18-karat gold in a noble white hue. All parts of the 43 mm case are made by hand by craftsmen. The Greubel Forsey GMT co-ordinate World Time complication watch is equipped with a highly complex movement consisting of 436 parts. To create it, the craftsmen used 50 stones.

By the way, the specialists of the Greubel Forsey manufactory are so confident in their abilities that they will not limit the production run of this model. Therefore, hypothetically, the Greubel Forsey GMT co-ordinate World Time complication international watch can be purchased by anyone who will not be put off by the cost of such a masterpiece.

Christophe Claret DeLaCour

When creating a complex mechanism for the Christophe Claret DeLaCour Bitourbillon model, the craftsmen of this company took care, first of all, of its convenience. To display the time in both zones, this international watch has two apertures with a jumping hour. They are located on both sides of the round indicator lunar phases. In the center of the dial of this model there is a long sword-shaped minute hand. Seconds can be counted by the movement of the tourbillons located at the bottom of the dial. By the way, they rotate in different directions.

The Christophe Claret DeLaCour Bitourbillon international time watch is equipped with a DC 297 movement with 78 jewels. It can continue to work without additional winding for 100 hours. The movement is housed in a barrel-shaped case measuring 40 x 33 mm, made of platinum or yellow gold. This international watch is secured to the wrist with a black strap, handcrafted from crocodile leather.

This model is extremely easy to use. One glance at the dial will be enough for a person to accurately determine the current time in two time zones at once. Here we are dealing with simplicity, which is a direct consequence of a complicated mechanism. This paradox distinguishes the international watch Christophe Claret DeLaCour Bitourbillon from its analogues.

As we can see from all the examples above, world time watches come in a huge number of variants. Today, every person can choose the model that best suits his taste and financial capabilities. Among other things, international watches differ in the way they display time in the second zone, so in this regard the choice also depends on the inclinations of a particular person. So it turns out that the main thing in this whole story is to have an interesting, eventful life, full of travel and new experiences, in which a watch with a GMT function can come in handy.

Olya

Good afternoon to everyone interested.)

Do you know what GMT is? How does the GMT function work in watches and why should you use it?

A little general and well known to everyone.

It's no secret that at the same moment. On our planet it is day somewhere, and on the diametrically opposite side it is night. The earth rotates, the light of the sun alternately reaches from one region to another. The planet was divided into equal sections, conventionally, by drawing lines parallel to the axis of rotation of the earth, calling them meridians. Since the earth completes a full revolution in 24 hours, it is not difficult to guess how many medians there are). They divide the earth into equal time zones. In the year 1884, near London, at the Greenwich Royal Observatory it was decided that the meridian with the number “zero” would pass through its location.

Here is the answer to the question: What is GMT?

GMT - the abbreviation stands for - Greenwich Mean Time or in translation - Greenwich Mean Time. Accordingly, in the territory included in the next time zone +1 to GMT or -1. Depending on which direction to count. The sun rises in the east and follows the west, that is, what is west of London will be “-”, and what is east of London will be “+”. True, now they no longer use the GMT standard, but the so-called UTC. It takes into account some errors, but we won’t talk about that in this article, as promised. The essence is approximately clear, known and simple to everyone.

If in Moscow it is 12-00, then in Geneva it is an hour less.

You are overwhelmed by questions: “How is it that West London is an hour less than East London?”

The answer is NO!!! It’s worth determining for yourself simple thing! All these are conventions (global agreement), and any rule has exceptions. Everything has been done for convenience, so that the main working hours take place during the most illuminated period of time, and nothing more.

Of course, there are many controversial issues, canceling the transition to winter time or not, etc. Different people at different periods of history they count differently, and you and I have no choice but to take note of the new law...

What is GMT in hours? How to use this feature.

The GMT function in a wristwatch is organized by the presence of an additional GMT hand on the dial, in addition to the usual hour, minute and second. At its core, it plays the role of a second, additional, sentry. And on one dial you get two reference systems at once. For example, we determine the time of the time zone where you are now using the hour and minute hands, and another one that interests you for some reason, using the GMT hand (representing it as an hour hand) and invariably the minute hand. It turns out that one glance at the watch is enough to navigate the time not only in Moscow, but also, for example, Pattaya, Burgas or New York... Very convenient. Watches with GMT are most in demand among travel enthusiasts and people on frequent international business trips....

How to use GMT in your watch and manage this function.

We think that “how to use GMT in a watch” is already clear to you, however, below, we will look at an example with photographs for a visual representation. And now, let’s say, you can adjust the GMT hand with the crown, in the second position, regardless of the rest of the hands. Rotating the crown in one direction will switch the date indicator, and in the other, the hand we are interested in. This information is reliable for most models of wristwatches and for replica Swiss watches, however, some manufacturers use mechanisms with a different setting system. Let's continue:

Please note that when a GMT watch is operating, the hand moves twice as slow as a regular hour hand and counts 24 hours per full revolution around the dial; many models have 24-hour markings on the rim to make it easier to read the instrument readings.

An example of using a GMT clock.

A) If you are in your home region and you are not interested in another time zone. The hand can be set as a 24 hour indicator. (Fig. 1) In Moscow 18-00...

B) Well, now let's move on, on business, say, to Norilsk. There are four hours more (+4). Let's set the time on our watch to ten o'clock, which will correspond to local time, and return the GMT indicator to 18-00( Moscow time). Perhaps you have a telephone conversation planned and the time agreed upon was in Moscow, it is important to be in the know. (Fig.2)

Some models of watches with a GMT function are equipped with a bezel/rim that rotates in two directions; it is used to quickly determine the time of other time zones relative to the time of your home, in our example, the Moscow region.

C) You are in Norilsk, and your companion is in Canada (Toronto), yesterday you spoke with him and you know that the difference is 7 hours, but yesterday it was still in Moscow. This means you need to clarify Moscow Time by adding four and subtracting seven, or, having a GMT watch on your wrist, simply turn the watch bezel 7 clicks to the right and the GMT hand will indicate the exact time of Toronto - 11 am. (Fig. 3)

D) Is your son learning English in the Maldives? 2 clicks to the left (relative to Moscow) and, please, it’s eight in the evening in Male. (Fig. 4)

Everything is simple and clear, and most importantly convenient), buy and use...
