Vincent Van Gogh: love is like madness. "Love, Vincent": an artistic exploration of Van Gogh's illness and death

Vincent Van Gogh, Self-Portrait

London, 1873, the 20-year-old son of a Dutch pastor, Vincent Van Gogh, lives in the capital of England, sells paintings and does not even think about starting to paint himself. Selling paintings was not a whim; Vincent needed to somehow earn a living - the young man could do nothing else. There were still almost 10 years before the first masterpieces. But, as usual, the fact is that the quiet and modest Vincent abandoned Good work and began to paint canvases, the fault is... love.

Ursula Loyer

Van Gogh was approaching thirty when he turned his attention to painting. But perhaps it was precisely thanks to his complete immersion in creativity that Vincent wanted to throw out his first and by no means happy love from his consciousness...

They met when 20-year-old Vincent moved to London; life in the province seemed unpromising to the future genius; he rented a small room from kind woman, and that one, as usual, had a young daughter who won Van Gogh’s heart. Her name was Ursula, she was 19, and Vincent seemed quite suitable to her for a touching and exclusively friendly relationship. Every morning Ursula woke Vincent up to go for a walk with him, or to have breakfast together, in short, to spend another day together that was ordinary for her and unforgettable for him. They practically never separated. According to the law of the genre, the girl treated such a pastime rather frivolously, laughed a lot and loudly, planned to marry someone else (Van Gogh was not distinguished by beauty, Ursula was not going to consider him as a groom) and did not think at all about the consequences, but in the soul of our seller paintings flared up day after day real passion. More than once Van Gogh confessed his love to Ursula, each time receiving a refusal; he was not embarrassed by either the presence of a groom or the beauty’s mother, who was always against the friendship of Vincent and Ursula.

Vincent Van Gogh, Father Elois's House

Perhaps it was precisely at that time that the first “oddities” of the future genius appeared, which only became worse with age. Before the last Wang Gog was quite sincerely convinced that his beloved’s fiancé was nothing more than a figment of her imagination, refused to accept harsh reality and relentlessly followed Ursula everywhere. The girl's mother, being an enterprising woman, kept a private kindergarten, where Ursula was required to work with children, for this work Van Gogh awarded her the title “Angel of Children.” For hours, Vincent could sit in the backyard, watching Ursula entertain the children. And hope, hope for something that was not destined to come true.

The rival appeared in the house of Ursula and her mother unexpectedly for the artist, Van Gogh was immediately denied an apartment, and Ursula began to prepare for the wedding. However, this did not stop the ardent lover. Having moved to the suburbs of London, every day he continued to come to the house of his muse to stand for a few minutes under the tightly curtained windows - suddenly the silhouette of his beloved would flash there. Tens of kilometers on foot, feet bleeding, and all for the sake of a few minutes of happiness. On one of these days, spent near Ursula’s house, Van Gogh had the “fortune” to witness her wedding. After this, it would be stupid to deny the presence of a groom, life suddenly lost all meaning for him and he, leaving both a stable job and his home, went on a journey, not really knowing where and why he was going, just to be away from the treacherous Ursula.

Vincent Van Gogh, Lovers

Mysterious K. turned out to be cousin Van Gogh. History developed rapidly. Kay, despite her youth, has already been married, given birth to a child and widowed. About starting new family, the girl didn’t think twice about it, especially since she hated the idea of connecting her life with an ugly cousin, who, moreover, was already famous for his oddities. He met her while visiting his own parents, where Kay came for a few days. Vincent had liked her for a long time. The mysterious sorrow in the eyes of his cousin so struck the impressionable artist that he immediately, without leaving the spot, confessed his love to her.

Such agility frightened the object of her adoration to such an extent that she, without hesitation, packed her things and left the hospitable house, not forgetting to inform the artist that mutual love in their case was impossible. Vincent, who had learned nothing from the bitter experience of the past, followed new lover. She again refused him, but it seems that the decisive “no” only provoked the genius. To create masterpieces, he needed to love, even if it was just a disembodied image, an unattainable dream, he needed an ideal! However, fate decreed otherwise - Van Gogh, burning with passion, wrote letters to Kay every day, sometimes she received up to five envelopes a day. Not the most pleasant situation, you will agree, especially in the complete absence of mutual feelings. Unlike Ursula, Kay did not even want to offer her admirer friendship. Soon the whole family knew about Vincent's painful hobby. Kay's father, unable to cope with his clearly insane relative, turned to Van Gogh's father for help. erupted huge scandal.

Unable to contain the raging flame within himself, the artist Once again went to his beloved home. However, an unexpected obstacle awaited him there in the form of the “bride’s” parents. In a fit of despair, Van Gogh raised his palm to the flame of a burning candle and said: “Let me at least talk to Kay as long as I can hold my hand in the fire!”

Five, ten, fifteen seconds... The skin became covered in blisters, began to burst, and turned black. Kay's father was stunned. Unable to bear the disgusting picture, the old man pushed the madman over the threshold. Life was over again. But creativity was lacking.

In one of his letters to his brother Theo, he wrote about these days like this: “Then - though not immediately, but very soon - I felt that love had died in me and its place was taken by emptiness, endless emptiness... But even after death they are resurrected from the dead..."

Christina

He didn't fall in love again. The only passionate, and most importantly - mutual love That's how painting remained. Which, however, did not stop the artist from getting married. But not out of love, but for some reasons that were understandable to him (but we remember that the genius was always a little crazy). This union was striking in its originality: Vincent wanted to take a washerwoman (and formerly a prostitute) as his wife, thereby once again plunging the family into confusion. In letters to his brother, the artist wrote: “Leaving her means pushing her back onto the path of prostitution, and the hand that tried to save her cannot do this...” However, Christina did not appreciate the noble impulse. She was several years older than the genius, understood nothing about painting, drank like a cobbler, and understood little more about family life than Van Gogh himself. Realizing quite quickly that she couldn’t see much money with a poor painter, she ran away from Vincent and went back to the brothel. Van Gogh turned out to be an extremely sensitive person. How could she leave him, the benefactor who practically took her off the street? He was again crushed and destroyed by the woman.

Vincent Van Gogh, Sunflowers

But, alas, despite her advanced age, the bride was influenced by her sisters, who were categorically against the dubious union. Margot, always submissive, unexpectedly showed persistence, and the sisters promised that they would marry her to Van Gogh, but not earlier than two years later. Vincent, having probably decided that the thorny path was not for him (at least in love), immediately abandoned his offer. Even Margot’s attempts to commit suicide did not bring him back to the unfortunate situation. From that moment on, Vincent Van Gogh decided to forget about women once and for all; from now on, his only beloved is painting.

To be precise, he was ugly. And somewhere in the shadow of the twilight he placed city houses and mountains. When the last painting was completed, he found himself at a dead end.

Not a single person saw anything special in his paintings. Van Gogh was very happy: a buyer finally showed up. Paintings by Toulouse Lautrec, Monet, Pizarro, Signac, Renoir made a huge impression on Van Gogh and had a significant influence on the further formation of his creative manner letters.

When he fell in love, these stories gave rise to a storm of indignation among his relatives. The paintings become more vibrant, dynamic, rich, and expressive. There is also a version that the sick and “misunderstood” Van Gogh could, through this painting, compare himself with the suffering Christ. Others claim that the ear was cut off while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The astronomer also gave a scientific explanation for the strange shadows under the mountain. Having taken up the study of theology, in 1878-79 he was a preacher in Borinage (Belgium), where he learned about the hard life of miners. The defense of their interests led Van Gogh to conflict with the church authorities.

However, the artist himself, immersed in his health problems, was rather afraid of fame, of the fact that “some success would unsettle him.” The final result is striking, first of all, by the level of work done. At the beginning of the twentieth century, absinthe was banned in many countries (safe versions of the drink are currently consumed). Van Gogh spent his entire life in poverty. You liked my ears, I give them to you.

It is this work that takes pride of place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located in New York. V. G. turns to art: visits the Academy of Arts in Brussels (1880-81) and in Antwerp (1885-86), uses the advice of A. Mauve in The Hague. "Starry Night" (1889), one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings late period, despite the unrealistic nature of the depicted starry sky (as if a whirlwind of stars is flying across it), it does not seem far-fetched or deliberate. Van Gogh's work is a kind of milestone; before him, painting was commonplace.

It's called the Ocean Climate Assessment Phase II (ECCO2). Light, airy, full light shades and joyful flowers, this painting marks the Impressionist period in Van Gogh's work. He was strange, not like the others. But the doctor's optimism gave him hope.

These photographs show that the ocean is full not only of currents, but also of water vortices. I don't see any point in becoming a priest, since everything I say will be a lie. Afterwards, Van Gogh proposed to Margot Begeman, a girl from a family who lived next door to his parents. The earth tries its best, but cannot fulfill this desire.

But this is understandable. The astronomer is convinced that late in the evening of this day the artist observed the so-called “lunar illusion,” that is, an optical illusion in which the Moon seems to increase in size. Since then, attacks (with delusions, hallucinations, agitation, attempts at poisoning) became Van Gogh's constant companions. The cartoon “Love, Vincent” (or, more accurately translated, “Vincent who loves you”), released in Russian rentals this week, is not just a reflection on the biography of the great artist, but a unique cartoon for today, entirely written by oil paints on canvas. Valley of La Croe, Fishing Boats in Sainte-Marie, both – 1888, Van Gogh Foundation, Amsterdam), then in ominous images scary world, where a person is depressed by loneliness and helplessness (Night Cafe, 1888, private collection, New York). Distinctive feature Van Gogh's new style - the brightness of yellow and blue colors their contrasting, but at the same time harmonious combination was fully embodied in the painting “Cafe Terrace at Night” (1888).

Van Gogh, yearning for “consoling art,” began to depict picturesque landscapes: olive groves, cypress trees, fields sown with wheat. V.G. enthusiastically paints disadvantaged people - Borinage miners, and later - peasants, artisans, fishermen, whose life he observed in Holland in 1881-85. After his death, his daughter sold “Portrait of Father Tanguy” to Auguste Rodin.

The famous “Sunflowers” series contains very strange flowers, touching and beautiful in their surreal ugliness. Who will say that his works have meaning. For Julien's kindness and responsiveness, the artists nicknamed him “Daddy.” Throughout his life he was unable to sell a single painting.

There are many versions of what actually happened, but Van Gogh's paintings from this period largely speak for themselves - emotional condition the person who wrote them is clearly shaken, which is felt in the composition and in the coloring and in the tense brushstrokes. I have always felt that through the trees the desire of the earth to reach the stars is manifested. A laudatory article about his work was also published. “We can only express ourselves through our paintings.” And even the huge star depicted in the painting “White House at Night” turned out to be Venus, which shone dazzlingly brightly on the day (night) of the masterpiece - June 16, 1890. But I do not think so.

In 1886, Van Gogh, on the recommendation younger brother Theo is leaving for Paris. But in my opinion, the crazy one is you. The artist’s first attending physician, trainee Felix Rey, also had a low opinion of Van Gogh’s work, who suggested that Van Gogh had a “special form of epilepsy.” Such a short creative life, only 9 years long, was destined for this man.

However, this did not stop the ardent lover. Here he had to write his most brilliant creations. Which, however, did not stop the artist from getting married. I cannot take advantage of a person's blindness and sell him a painting.

Having opened the envelope, she lost consciousness, and the owner of the brothel called the police. The work of the last two years of the artist’s life was marked by ecstatic obsession, extremely heightened expression of color combinations, sudden changes in mood - from frenzied despair and gloomy visionaryism (Road with Cypresses and Stars, 1890, Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo) to a tremulous feeling of enlightenment and peace (Landscape in Auvers after the rain, 1890, Pushkin Museum, Moscow). However, Vincent Van Gogh wanted to become an artist.

Throughout his life he wrote more than 30. famous painting Van Gogh's "Cafe Terrace at Night" is an encrypted dedication to Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper," says researcher Jared Baxter. He fell in love with his cousin, who lost her husband early, but this only caused his father’s displeasure. This masterpiece was painted by Van Gogh from memory. She again refused him, but it seems that the decisive “no” only provoked the genius. Vincent's parents were not famous artists.

It will only be torture for my soul.” After leaving school, young Vincent worked at the art company Goupil and Co., co-owned by his uncle, selling paintings. On the day the masterpiece was written - June 16, 1890 - it shone especially brightly. You might think he's really crazy. Can trees be taller than the stars? Unlike Doré, Van Gogh paints the walls of the prison with fuzzy lines. And the woman was just joking.

He said, “Instead of bringing you any comfort, I only hurt you. The man the brother sent came. One of the authors of the study, Mark Chapman, pointed to the reason that changes the flower petals - genes of the CYC family, which affect the structure of flowers in asteraceae (relatives of sunflowers).

"Cafe Terrace at Night" (1888). Van Gogh's intense work last years accompanied by attacks of mental illness, which led him to a mental hospital in Arles, then to Saint-Rémy (1889–1890) and to Auvers-sur-Oise (1890), where he committed suicide. At the age of 30, V.G. began painting and created an extensive series of paintings and sketches, executed in dark, gloomy colors and imbued with warm sympathy for ordinary people (Peasant Woman, 1885, Kröller-Müller State Museum, Otterlo Potato Eaters, 1885, W. van Gogh Foundation, Amsterdam). Put the painting in its place and take your money. It was found that absinthe contains a strong hallucinogenic substance, thujone, which is formed in high concentrations when obtaining wormwood extract. This way I will have to lie all the time.

But how to check, because no one knew exact date painting a picture. Tens of kilometers on foot, bloody feet, all for the sake of a few minutes of happiness. There were seven children in total, Vincent was the second. It was painted by Van Gogh a year before his death and the artist himself defined it as “a lightning rod for my illness.” Even a very simple plot can be forgiven for this. This is approximately how water behaves in the World Ocean. Now his works adorn the collections of the most famous galleries and museums around the world. Heat, hunger But he was immensely happy, even after losing his mind, he drew.

A. S. Pushkin, Moscow), but also everyone inanimate object(Van Gogh's bedroom in Arles, 1888, W. van Gogh Foundation, Amsterdam). In addition, he was very religious, for some time he even served as a Christian preacher. It turned out - no. Vincent's work reflected the complex, crucial moment in the history of European culture.

Who knows, if after the wound the artist had received the necessary help, and not the usual bandage, the will to live could have taken its toll. He managed to finish his last painting and went crazy. In September 1987, "Irises" was sold for US$53.9 million. They practically never separated.

And he was tormented by attacks of illness that became unbearable. Back in September 1889, at an exhibition of independent artists in Paris, one of his works - “Red Vineyards in Arles” - was purchased for 400 francs. Just two years later, in 1887, he painted “View of Paris from Theo’s apartment on Rue Lepic.”

Developing traditions critical realism 19th century, especially the work of J. F. Millet, He combined them with the emotional and psychological intensity of the images, a painfully sensitive perception of the suffering and depression of people. Even sympathy This is how he asked: “Actually, you like me. It seems to the whole world that Van Gogh committed suicide - but I think differently.

Without Van Gogh there would be no Picasso. There was nothing more to do. To create it, he used a touch screen and openFrameworks tools.

And it all ends in a quarrel that leads Vincent to nervous breakdown. And these vortices on the surface of the water, visualized by NASA specialists, turned out to be one on one with the Vangogh whirlpools he captured in the sky.

When Vincent's brother found out what had happened, he came to apologize. Unlike Ursula, Kay did not even want to offer her admirer friendship. However, in the 50s, the attitude towards absinthe changed dramatically: experts began to note with alarm that after its constant use, the so-called absinthe syndrome develops, manifested in the form of insomnia, hyperexcitability, depression, hallucinations, tremors, lack of coordination, convulsions (convulsions) and etc. But not out of love, but for some reasons that were understandable to him (but we remember that the genius was always a little crazy). To the north - day, bottom (earth), life, fields, green and blue colors. But I can.

And “Still Life with Flowers in a Bronze Vase” (1887), one of the still lifes of those years, amazes with its conventionality and authenticity at the same time. In this way he managed to assemble an excellent collection. On one of these days, spent near Ursula’s house, Van Gogh had the “fortune” to witness her wedding. That’s why I left the house at night and started drawing stars,” Vincent wrote to his brother Theo. Moreover, he considered himself undeserving of any praise. Van Gogh's Starry Night depicts huge stars surrounded by spherical halos of flickering light - pale gold, white-hot, like jets forming whirlpools.

Some are pale gold, others are white-hot - they create the sensation of spinning. Even Margot’s attempts to commit suicide did not bring him back to the unfortunate situation. He often sent them sketches of his future paintings, as he did with the painting “Bedroom in Arles.” The last two years of the artist’s life were filled with tossing and turning. Van Gogh began to paint.

Valley of La Croe, 1888), then in ominous, reminiscent nightmare images (Night Cafe, 1888, private collection, New York). A huge scandal broke out. This painting is one of the artist's most famous self-portraits. That's when Van Gogh began to paint.

Kiss

Details and technology

"Kiss"- is probably the most recognizable and popular work Gustav Klimt. It was written in the “golden” period, the most fruitful stage of his work. The name “golden” was given for a reason; taking a look at this picture we will see many golden details; Klimt used gold leaf in his painting, because of this technique the period got its name.

Plot

This painting is quite symbolic, although it has a simple plot. The painting shows a man and a woman standing in the middle of a flower hill. A man leans towards a woman to give her a kiss, his face hidden from the audience. Women were the main characters in Klimt's paintings, so the man's face is not important here. The characters in the picture do not notice what is happening around them, they are busy with each other. We can notice that there are no unnecessary details in the picture, only heroes.

Description

The picture looks very unusual due to the fact that the figures seem to merge into one whole. In the pose of the two heroes of the picture one can read a storm of emotions and passion. But judging by the difference in patterns on their robes, one can still see a fine line between them. Experts have put forward a theory that the patterns on the characters’ clothes are related to their gender. Patterns on men's raincoat made in the form of clear geometric shapes in discreet shades. On the contrary, the patterns on women’s clothes are smoother and more sophisticated, they use delicate tones.

There is also gilding in the background, its reflections resemble the shine of stars in the sky. This effect complements the feeling that there is a cliff or abyss behind our heroes, as if they are on the edge of the world, alone in the universe.

Tree of life. Gustav Klimt.

Painting "Kiss" differs from other paintings by Klimt in that in this picture he depicts not carnal pleasures and eroticism, but the most tender and beautiful feeling - love. Gustav Klimt was a fan of the works of Sigmund Freud, and it is believed that one of his theories inspired the artist to paint this painting. Critics believe that Emilia Flöge, his faithful life partner, served as the image of a woman for Klimt.

On a summer day in 1890, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in a field outside Paris. A columnist examines the painting he was working on that morning to see what it says about the artist's state of mind.

On July 27, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh walked out into a wheat field behind a castle in the French village of Auvers-sur-Oise, a few kilometers from Paris, and shot himself in the chest.

By that time, the artist had already been suffering from mental illness for a year and a half - ever since, on a December evening in 1888, during his life in the city of Arles in French Provence, the unfortunate man cut off his left ear with a razor.

After this, he periodically had attacks that undermined his strength and after which he was in a state of clouded consciousness for several days, or even weeks, or lost touch with reality.

However, in the intervals between breakdowns his mind was calm and clear, and the artist could paint pictures.

Moreover, his stay in Auvers, where he arrived in May 1890 after leaving a psychiatric hospital, became the most fruitful stage of his creative life: in 70 days he created 75 paintings and more than a hundred drawings and sketches.

Dying, Van Gogh said: “That’s how I wanted to leave!”

However, despite this, he felt increasingly lonely and could not find a place for himself, convincing himself that his life was in vain.

Eventually he got hold of a small revolver that belonged to the owner of the house he was renting in Auvers.

It was this weapon that he took with him into the field on that fateful Sunday afternoon at the end of July.

However, he only got his hands on a pocket revolver, not very powerful, so when the artist pulled the trigger, the bullet, instead of piercing the heart, ricocheted off the rib.

Van Gogh lost consciousness and fell to the ground. When evening came, he came to his senses and began to look for a revolver to finish the job, but he couldn’t find it and trudged back to the hotel, where a doctor was called for him.

The incident was reported to Van Gogh's brother, Theo, who arrived the next day. For some time, Theo thought that Vincent would survive - but nothing could be done. That same night, at the age of 37, the artist died.

“I didn’t leave his bedside until it was all over,” Theo wrote to his wife Johanna. “As he died, he said: “That’s how I wanted to go!”, After which he lived for a few more minutes, and then it was all over, and he found peace that he could not find on earth."

If you haven't watched Van Gogh yet. Love, Vincent”, please hurry. Firstly, you will be present at a historical moment, since this is the world's first animated feature film, entirely painted with oil paints on canvas. (It is worth mentioning that the eminent director of animated films using the technique of “revived painting” became Russian author Alexander Petrov, awarded an Oscar for the film “The Old Man and the Sea.”) “Van Gogh” is the most unusual film recent times. It would be fair to say that this is a completely new art that does not yet have a name. Maybe this is a “picturesque cinema”, where there is everything that should be in a feature film: plot, characters, drama. Or maybe “cinematic painting”. In any case, you will receive incredible joy from the beauty that splashes from the screen with the familiar Van Gogh rich color. In addition, you will learn even more about the famous artist, for whom fate itself was destined for the thorny path of an unrecognized lonely wanderer in the present and a great genius in the future.

The script is based on 800 letters from Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo and more than 100 paintings and sketches by the artist. In fact, through his paintings (and in this film, every frame is a painting of the master come to life) we learn a lot about where Vincent lived, who he met, who was the hero of his paintings, what he felt, what he was happy about, what he suffered from and how he died. The authors (and there are more than 100 of them), who transferred the painting to 65,000 frames, essentially presented it in a pictorial-animated-game version true biography artist. Doctor Gachet is not only the hero of the famous Van Hogh portrait, who actually treated Vincent in a hospital for the mentally ill. This is also a failed artist himself, who, jealous of his patient’s talent, copied his works. Margarita Gachet is not only “The Girl at the Piano”, but also the doctor’s daughter, with whom, not without reciprocity, Vincent was in love and who never married after his death. Here “Zouave” and “Mousme”, “Ladies of Arles” and “Postman Roulin”, “Red Vineyards in Arles” (the only Van Gogh painting sold during his lifetime for a meager price) and “Pope Tanguy”, views of Arles and Auvers come to life - the artist's final resting places, many, many others. For their story, the authors chose a detective plot. The main character was Armand Roulin, the son of that very “portrait” postman and the hero of the portrait of the same name by Van Gogh. He must deliver Theo last letter Vincent. Arman takes on the assignment reluctantly, but the more conflicting reviews hears about the sender of the message, the more significant the mission becomes for him. Along the way, a lot becomes clear: the visitors of the “Night Cafe in Arles”; and Father Tanguy, from whom Van Gogh bought brushes and paints; and a man scattering grains in a field in the rays of the hot sun, who for Van Gogh himself was more an image of death than a sower; and meeting with Paul Gauguin; and the tragic situation with the cut off ear; and the fact that Theo survived his brother by only six months, which means the letter cannot be delivered to the addressee.

In every frame one can feel the great sincere love and gratitude of the authors for the person the film is about. The personality and biography of Van Gogh gave and continues to give many reasons for gossip and gossip. Many of them were embodied in various films. This work attracts high degree respect and delicacy for every moment of the life of a great man. The circumstances of the death are shown not with the desire to surprise and amuse, but from the point of view of a detailed investigation, where different versions arise of what could have happened in the very field that the artist himself had, either with crows, or under a stormy sky. Even the fact that the texture of each frame is conveyed in Van Gogh’s favorite impasto technique (thick application of paint) speaks not only of diligence and responsibility, but also of true reverence for a true master, tragic fate and loyalty to his art which never ceases to amaze and delight.

"Van Gogh. With Love, Vincent" is a joint Polish-British film that began with an appeal to people on a crowdfunding platform (an Internet resource for raising money for various projects), is one of the Oscar nominees. But that's not the point. And the fact is that this is one of the powerful statements about someone who so poignantly managed to express all the bitterness human destiny and embody what he knew well: “I believe that The best way to know God is love. It is wonderful to love as much as possible, and this is where true strength lies, and he who loves much achieves greatness, and what is done with love is done with glory.” The letter that Armand Roulin tried to deliver finally reached the addressee - you and I, for whom this film is not only an aesthetic, but also a philosophical and ethical message.
