Similarities between fairy tales and legends. What is the difference between a tale and a fairy tale?

Profile siamese cat, 9B pencil (super soft), on Robert A. Sloan paper.
Completed demo drawing.
Model – Siamese cat Aristophanes Mrs. Sloan.

Drawing a Siamese cat in profile. General instructions.

When you draw a cat from life, it is very important to choose a moment when the cat is sitting still and relaxed. Try not to do it yourself sudden movements. Look at the cat carefully, make a sketch, look at the cat again, try to remember everything in detail, because the cat may move and you will not have such a chance.

That's why it's so important to get your first draft done. Those few moments before the sketch may be your only chance to catch the cat in the desired pose. Cats are very cunning creatures: they will lie or sit still until you look at them, and then immediately begin to wash themselves, yawn or roll over. Your cat is laughing, laughing at you.

Ari (Aristophanes) is a very bad model. If he notices that I am drawing him, he immediately begins to make faces. So if you notice your cat staring at something interesting, like children playing, quickly sketch it out before she realizes what you're doing. This time Ari was very well behaved and posed the whole time while I was drawing.

And I want to thank him for this rare opportunity.

If your cat is not willing to sit still for long enough, photograph quickly and suddenly before she starts to move. You can even use a phone camera. A whole series of pictures will make your task easier. However, it is still better to draw from life. To do this, you need to train your memory in order to remember the cat and its pose within 30 seconds, and then be able to reproduce it on paper. Although sometimes - by chance - you come across masterpiece photographs where the cat turns out to be surprisingly elegant and graceful.

So let's start with the first step - sketching. Don't waste a lot of time. Look at the cat as a collection of geometric shapes, draw a sketch. My cat is a Siamese, so I will teach you how to draw the profile of a Siamese cat.

1. Sketch.

First stage. Sketch.
Please note that the head is not a perfect circle.

Most likely, you are already familiar with this method. It is described in almost all the drawing books that I have. Its essence is to, at the beginning of the work, reduce all the variety of shapes of your model to the simplest shapes (circle, oval, triangle), avoiding details for now. It is important to maintain the proportions of these simple shapes in relation to each other.

There are many reasons why this method is the most successful.

One of these reasons: if you draw something wrong, it is easier to correct it. Well, imagine you drew an ear, drew all the details, spent time, and then discovered that it was too big or too small, or just in the wrong place. It is much easier and faster to erase the triangle of the ear. It will take you a few seconds to make a sketch if you don't think or hesitate. You can try several times.

Try to make such sketches of your cat from nature, from a photograph. Try copying my sketch.

The ears are on the top rather than on the sides of the head. The muzzle is short and clear. A cat's eyes are much larger in relation to the face than human eyes are in relation to the face. Remember this.

I even suggest that you don’t erase the excess, but place another piece of paper under your drawing. And then draw along the lines pressed from the first drawing.

The more often you practice sketching, the better your drawings will become.

2. Drawing a sketch

Second phase. Drawing contour lines.

At this stage, our drawing already looks a little like the profile of a cat.

While I was drawing the details, Ari sat motionless the entire time. And I am very grateful to my grandchildren, who played loudly in the hallway and captured his attention.

Draw visible eye on the face. Please note that this is not an oval. The profile of a cat's eye is very similar to that of human eye, except that there is no visible squirrel. Siamese cats have blue eyes and black and white drawing they are white and only the pupil is shaded.

The profile is very clear, drawn with a soft convex line. Cats do not have a forehead compared to a human face. The profile has a slight bend, which should preferably be at eye level, not lower than the lower eyelids. The tips of the nose and chin form a straight line.

The ears are practically cones, not triangles. It is important to correctly draw the lines where the ear connects to the head, otherwise the ear will look glued on, unrealistic. If you have a photo, carefully study how exactly the ear connects to the head.

In my drawing, the ears and eyes are turned in the same direction.

I used a 9B super soft graphite pencil, you can use any. But remember that it is easier to shade with a softer pencil.

Copy this sketch several times, try to draw the details in different ways. Don't forget to look at the cat.

3. Hatching the mask and ears of the Siamese cat

Third stage. Hatching of the mask and ears of a Siamese cat.

I carefully shaded the muzzle in the direction of the fur. It is very important to hatch exactly in the direction of the fur, otherwise you risk getting something ugly and shaggy.

On the cat's forehead, I made several layers using vertical short strokes to create a dark mask. I shaded the ears in the same way. On the muzzle I used shorter strokes going from the nose to the side and down.

Pay attention to the area between the cat's ears and eyebrows. This is where the mask ends and the hair is so sparse that you can easily see the skin. Capturing this feature emphasizes the realism of your drawing.

The size of the mask depends on the age and color of your Siamese cat. The shape of the mask may vary individually for each cat. Take a close look at your cat, or draw the same mask as my Ari.

4. The finishing touch

Siamese cat, profile.
Robert A. Sloan

Ari's whiskers (whiskers) are actually white, but if you are drawing on a white background, it is better to draw them black. It is very difficult to draw white vibrissae on a black background with a pencil.

The eyebrows of a cat are drawn in the same way. Draw curves springing from the muzzle. The same vibrissae are also found near the neck and ears: look at your cat in great detail.

I don’t know if other cats have it, but my Ari definitely has the same hairs on his paws and wrists. I think they help him get toys from under the sofa.

I shaded the front paw heavily, leaving some white between the toes. The thing is that Ari has white tufts of hair between her fingers. The fur on the cat's paws flows smoothly down, on the shoulders - at a slight angle, on the back of the head and neck - at an acute angle.

Always drawing an animal, hatch in the direction of the fur.

Draw the fur schematically, do not try to draw every hair. 3-4 vibrissae in the picture may well pass for one or two dozen in reality.

I hope you enjoyed my lesson. Be sure to try it with your cat. Ari sends you purr greetings and inspiration!

Along with dogs, cats are one of the most popular pets. Even a two-year-old child knows what a cat looks like and will probably want to draw it.

With simple step-by-step instructions this will be very easy to do. Any beginning artist can handle some of them.

You can draw a picture with your child in a realistic or cartoon style.

It all depends on your imagination and your baby’s ability to draw. Start with simple lessons, and then proceed to more complex ones.

For drawing, it is better to use a simple pencil so that you can later erase unnecessary auxiliary lines. This way your drawing will turn out neat.

If you want to create a girl cat, draw her long eyelashes. They will make your look more open.

  • The kitten's head is ready, all that remains is to modify the body a little. On each of the paws we draw fingers, erasing all the extra lines. Notice how the toes on the left paw overlap each other slightly. You can draw claws on each of your fingers.
  • We complete the picture by erasing unnecessary lines and drawing out the details more carefully. We color the kitten with colored pencils, felt-tip pens or paints.

Sitting cat in profile

  • Draw the line of the ear and the front of the head as shown in the figure.
  • Draw a smooth curved line at the back of the head.
  • Sketch the cat's back using two curved lines of different lengths. The small one will be the cat’s neck, and the large one will be the cat’s back. The line ends where the tail begins.

  • We draw the lower part of the animal’s muzzle, using a curved line to indicate the chest. Draw an arc - it will become the cat’s back paw.
  • We complete the outline of the front and rear legs.
  • Add a tail, draw a triangular eye and a second ear peeking out from behind the first.
  • Apply shadows with a simple pencil as shown in the picture. Adding shadows will give the painting a more realistic look.

Realistic cat

  • We mark the outline of the animal's body. Draw a circle for the head and divide it in half with a line. A little lower and a little to the left we draw a circle of larger diameter. Draw a curved line to it as shown in the figure.
  • We draw the outline of the cat’s face and add triangular ears to the head. Add two small ovals at the bottom of the head, connecting them below with a curved line. This way we will designate the cat's nose and mouth.
  • In the lower part of the body, draw two small ovals (front legs) and a long rectangle (tail).
  • We draw the details of the face: we make almond-shaped eyes, draw a nose and muzzle. Using small strokes we make the cat fluffy. Add eyebrows and mustache using longer strokes.
  • We draw the cat's front legs, her tail and claws. Don't forget to add small touches that will make the cat look fluffy.
  • Using strokes of various lengths we complete the picture. Erase the extra details and color the cat.

  • We sketch the figure of a cat: draw a small circle and a large oval intersecting it. They will become the head and body of the animal.
  • We outline the main details of the face: the circle of the muzzle and the triangles of the ears. To make it easier to maintain proportions, we divide the circles in half with several lines.
  • Using several circles and ovals we outline the hips, tail and paws of the cat.
  • On the muzzle we draw two circles for the eyes and a triangle for the face.
  • The sketch is almost ready, let's start detailing it. Using strokes we create fluffy cat fur, erase extra lines and add color. Color the cat the way you like.

Standing cat in profile

  • Draw a circle for the animal’s head, a rectangle for the body. Inside the rectangle we place an oval extending beyond its borders. It will help us define the cat's hips. Draw an arc to the part of the rectangle that is located closer to the head.
  • To the animal’s head we add the main facial features: ears and muzzle. Draw a triangular eye and nose.
  • Using ovals different sizes create a sketch of the cat's front, hind legs and hips. At the back we draw a curved line indicating the tail.
  • We connect all these lines and apply strokes to create an imitation of the fluffy fur of a cat.
  • Erase the extra lines and add additional details. Our cat can be tabby or spotted. Using colored pencils, felt-tip pens or wax crayons, we add brightness and color to the drawing.

We have a graceful and beautiful cat!

Cats rule the Internet! I have no doubt that one day they will completely take control of our lives. To prepare for this day, you need to get to know the enemy better. By drawing a cat, you will understand what they are really made of. So take a pencil - I'll show you!

If you need samples, you can find a lot of cat photos on Envato Market. Make sure you don't get distracted by their excessive cuteness, come back to this guide!

1. Cat skeletal structure

Step 1

Studying the skeletal structure is the first step in creating a realistic pose. Bones support muscles, and the joints between them determine the range of motion.

Step 2

Luckily, you don't have to remember the exact shape of the bones. It is enough to know their length and how they connect to each other. The good news is that most four-legged animals have the same bone structure, with the only differences being the length and spacing between them. Remember this once and you can use this knowledge for the rest of your life!

Remember the skeleton as a group of ovals (joints, skull, rib cage, hips) and lines (bones, spine). If you remember this structure, you can easily draw each pose.

Step 3

Another thing to remember is that each joint has a certain range of motion. If you go beyond this limit, the animal will look "broken". For better understanding Take a close look at this running animation. When running, a cat uses its full range of motion, so you can see how natural it looks.

What to pay attention to:

  1. The jump begins; the hind legs push off the ground.
  2. While the hind legs move away, the front legs move forward.
  3. When the legs push off the ground, the body part they are attached to remains at their default level. The other one can rise up.
  4. Note that the hind leg bones never form a straight line, even when fully extended.
  5. She's flying! The legs do not touch the ground, the body is completely stretched.
  6. The front legs prepare to land as far as possible.
  7. Now the legs are fully stretched and again - no straight line.
  8. Again, notice the difference in levels.
  9. Landing completed; the hind legs will now try to land at the same point.
  10. Pay attention to this point; she always moves, pulling her chest along with her.
  11. The direction of the tail tip depends on the position of the hips.
  12. When all paws are on the ground, front and back are at the same level.

Step 4

You can say "I don't need this, I feel the desired pose." Yes, it is possible, but there are several mistakes that many people make out of ignorance.

This is a very popular interpretation of the animal skeleton. It comes from a confusion of hind and front legs. They are not the same! Compare your arms and legs.

This pose isn't completely wrong - it's perfect for cartoons where characters use their legs as propellers. But in the real world, the hind legs can bend almost 120 degrees (like cheetahs). Also, the cat will try to keep its head in one position when running, otherwise it's some kind of rabid zombie cat (look at the animation again).

This skeleton is interesting! His bones are adapted exclusively to the shape of his hips. The problem is that the shape of the hips is not only made by bones - it is mainly muscles, and this fact should not be overlooked. The first pose has the front leg bent and the back leg in a sitting position. Small cats eat in this position, but their chest does not touch the ground.

Another problem comes from the cat's strange habits. They walk with a “walking” gait - first they put two legs on one side, then two legs on the other. Many people won't notice this mistake, but it's still a mistake! Fortunately, cats adopt a "diagonal" stride when they accelerate.

Step 5

After you've learned everything about posing, make your sketch.

2. Structure of cat muscles

Step 1

Muscles give the body its shape. You can draw the body without knowing the muscle structure, but guessing is not the best way. You might think that this is too difficult, but I will show you that it is not that difficult.

First cover the skeleton with simplified muscle mass. Yes, it's that simple! If you're drawing a very fluffy cat, this is all you need. The muscles will not be visible in any case.

Step 2

This is my cat covered in core muscles.

Step 3

Those of us who prefer short-haired or short-haired cats medium length wool, need to find out a little more. They can still be simplified. These are big muscle mass visible under the skin. If you want to learn them painlessly, use this sample to get started. After a few exercises, this structure will be remembered.

Step 4

Now my cat has muscles too!

Step 5

There is something else. Cats have fairly loose skin; in some places it does not hide the muscles. If you have a cat, try touching the area between the thigh and the back of the shin - you will only feel the skin and fur! This extra skin prevents you from seeing the thigh or back of the lower leg when the cat is sitting.

Step 6

Draw additional skin to complete the body shape.

3. How to draw cat paws

Step 1

A cat's back and front paws are as different as your hands and feet. You can look at them to get an idea of the structure of a cat's paw. Cats walk on their toes, using only part of the "palm" for support. They also have a small thumb(the beginning of the fifth finger) and a small process on the wrist (pea-shaped), but only on the front legs. Our hind legs are actually very similar to our feet.

Step 2

Cat paws are absolutely unique in the animal kingdom. Their claws retract, but it doesn't work the way we imagine. The claw is attached to the last phalanx of the finger. Surprisingly, this part is placed next to the previous bone, and not at its end. Only when the claw retracts does it come close to the end.

What does this mean for us? The claws, including the small bones to which they are attached, are located on the outside of each toe. This means that they are not symmetrical. If the illustration below is not clear to you, look at the photo of the sphinxes; because They have no fur and their claws are more visible.

By looking at the examples, you can easily understand that declawing is a controversial issue.

Step 3

Here we see the left and right front paws, both with retracted claws. Try to bring your hand into the same position to understand where the front leg ends and the paw begins.

Step 4

Now we will learn how to draw a paw.

  • For the front view: Draw four lines ending in a "rock" shape.
  • For the side view: Draw four lines starting from an oval, then draw a step at the end of each. The steps in the middle should be inclined.

Step 5

  • For the front view: Draw four "eggs" at the end of each line within the stone shape.
  • For the side view: draw four "eggs" to cover the last corner. Connect the eggs to the first part of the lines.

Step 6

You may need to add a pea ( appearance) or the rudiment of the fifth finger (internal view), if you are drawing the front paws.

Step 7

Now cover the entire shape with wool. The claws have their own special thin coating that covers them only on top and on the sides.

Step 8

Ok, they were fluffy soft paws. What if these are paws a la Angry Kitten? They are also easy to draw if you know the anatomy.

Step 9

Now my cat has completed paws.

4. How to draw the proportions of a cat's face

The proportions of a cat's face depend on the breed, but there are rules that can be used to draw a "typical" cat."

Step 1

Draw two circles - one large and one smaller. This is the approximate shape of the head and muzzle.

Step 2

Divide small circle into six approximately equal parts.

Step 3

Divide the center line into six equal parts. This will help determine correct position nose and mouth.

Step 4

Draw a simple triangle between the lines shown below. You can also start drawing the mouth.

Step 5

Draw the remaining parts of the muzzle using guide lines.

Step 6

Now let's find the location of the eyes. Add four directions using the already drawn lines.

Step 7

Now you can easily add eyes.

Step 8

When you want to draw a kitten, you need to change the proportions to get enlarged round eyes.

Step 9

To complete the shape of the head, add ears and cheek structure.

Step 10

Drawing a head in profile is not that difficult if you know how to place guide lines.

Step 11

Now we know how to draw a cat's head, but this is just the basis for real drawing. In the next steps we will take care of every element of the cat's face.

5. How to draw a cat's eye

Step 1

If you followed my previous tips, you should end up with an oval/circle as the base of the eye.

Step 2

Around the eye we can see three elements - the edge of the lower eyelid, a row of upper eyelashes and a dark area in the inner corner. Part of the third century can also be shown.

Step 3

Add the pupil:

  • Small cats have slitted pupils; they only round in low light.
  • Big cats have round pupils; in strong light they become smaller, but not narrower.

The size of the pupils can be important in conveying the authenticity of a drawing. If you draw a cat with large round pupils, and at that time it is on a sunny beach (or in front of a fire) - it will look unnatural.

Step 4

Add dark "veins" around the pupils and lighter ones elsewhere, branching out in a circle from the center of the eye.

Step 5

The eye consists not only of eyeball. If you were drawing human face, you would add eyelids, eyelashes and maybe some eyebrows to complete the picture. When drawing a cat's eye, we will add lighter areas around it, as well as a dark narrow ellipse above the eye - this is where the whiskers (contact antennae) grow from.

Step 6

When the eye is closed, it becomes a dark line. Both light areas around him also become closer.

Step 7

The side view can be quite intricate. From this angle, the clear dome of the lens is visible, and the rest of the eye appears flat (look at the photos of cats).

Step 8

Once you know what the eyes should look like, you can draw them.

6. How to draw a cat's nose

Step 1

Start with a long diamond. Its bottom is usually darker.

Step 2

For the nostrils, add two “wings”.

Step 3

Draw the holes. They are not like the inner nostrils of a person, so be careful here.

Step 4

Add the bridge of the nose. It should be round at the top. The sides of the baffle will be slightly darker and the coat will be much shorter.

Step 5

Our pussy has a cute little nose!

7. How to draw cat ears

Step 1

Cat ears are not as simple as we used to think. These are not just triangles or cones - there is a complex structure that needs to be studied to make the drawing more realistic.

Step 2

To draw the ear from the front, start with a circle. Then divide it into four parts, drawing lines at a slight angle.

Step 3

Use the directions to draw the outline of the ear.

Step 4

Cats have a strange fold on the outside of their ears called a tragus. It's quite difficult to draw from the front, but it's necessary - draw it and people will think you're an expert on cats!

Step 5

Now you can add the hair tufts. Their density depends on the breed, but in general it is better to place them on inside and leave the outside bare.

Step 6

But there is something else! Cats can rotate their ears, so you need to learn more about ear "postures." You can use the same method. Just keep in mind that the ears are larger than we usually see them. The lower part can be covered with soft wool. If you compare long-haired cats to hairless cats, you will see what a difference the hair makes in terms of ear size.

Step 7

Now our cat can hear!

8. How to draw cat whiskers

Step 1

The whiskers are an additional sensory organ in cats. They are on the face, around the eyes, under the chin and behind the paws. Whiskers grow from small dark “holes” in the fur. We have already drawn the vibris places above the eyes, now we will add a little on the muzzle.

Step 2

Cats typically have twelve whiskers on each side, but you don't have to stick to that number. Thirteen on the left and fifteen on the right is also normal! Just draw them very thin and light. They should be longer than half the head.

9. How to draw cat fur

Step 1

The amount of hair determines the shape of the head. A cat's head without hair is triangular. Then, by adding a small amount of wool, the shape softens. Add longer hair and the head becomes round (kittens look cuter/younger with round heads). If you add very long hair, the head becomes trapezoidal.

Monika Zagrobelna

I"m a Polish artist with a long experience in doing useless, but creative things. Since I realized how bad I was after all these years, I decided to take fate into my own hands and actually study things in order to draw them properly. My tutorials are the result of thorough studies - I hope they help you as they helped me!

Many people love cats. Therefore, sometimes I really want to depict one of these cute creatures on paper. Let the cat be funny, cartoonish or real-life. Not everyone has the talent of an artist, but anyone who wants to master the step-by-step drawing technique and depict the animal they like is quite capable.

Is it difficult to draw a cat?

Drawing a cat on paper is not difficult. Any drawing is based on simple geometric shapes as:

  • circle;
  • oval;
  • square;
  • rectangle;
  • triangle.

Therefore, before you draw a cat, you need to be able to correctly depict the named geometric figures on paper. The main parts of a cat's body are:

  • head (slightly flattened circle);
  • body (oval);
  • ears (triangles with rounded ends);
  • paws and tail (elongated ovals).

All figures are connected to each other when drawing. This is done smoothly, as when sculpting plasticine figures. If the animal's muzzle is half turned, the outline of the far ear is made thinner so that the inside of the ear is almost invisible.

The image of convex parts and curves on the cat’s body will give credibility to the drawing. When drawing, focus on how the sizes of certain parts of the cat’s body relate to each other. For example, the size of the head should not be larger size torso. Start your work with the cat's head. The task can be made easier if you imagine a head devoid of hair and ears. At the same time, try to determine the ratio of the sizes of the main parts of the cat's body.

What technique can you use to draw cats?

You can draw a cat, cat, kitten using oil, pencil, watercolor and other visual means. There are also non-standard methods images of this graceful animal. Please be aware that using any technique chosen will determine the results individual abilities artist.

Pencil drawing

Anyone who decides to engage in such creativity for the first time should start drawing by using the simplest object - a pencil. It can be easily erased if a mistake is made while drawing. The process of drawing a cat with a simple pencil is fascinating and educational. While working, you learn the basics of drawing this cute animal and acquire the necessary skills. By using simple tool you can learn to depict the fur of a cat, convey volume, light, shadow.

Over time, you can move on to more complex means visual arts. When will the technique be mastered? pencil drawing, it will be easier and faster to portray any representative cat family watercolor, gouache, and other materials.

Drawing with a simple pencil - good way learn to display volume, shadow and light on a sheet of paper

Watercolor

Using watercolors you can create a beautiful image of a cat in color. This is quite difficult, because in addition to the outlines of the cat, you need to correctly apply the shades and depict the iridescence of the fur. It is better to paint on watercolor paper. First, make a pencil sketch with light hand movements. It should not protrude from under the layers of paint.

The main difficulty when painting with watercolors is to correctly apply shades and combine them

Gouache

To create a gouache painting you will need some skill. You can first make a sketch with a simple pencil. And you also need to be careful to correctly convey all the color shades of the animal.

Acrylic paints

These paints are a convenient painting material that many people enjoy. Even experienced artists use them. Acrylic is like oil, it has no odor, and dries quickly. Paintings created acrylic paints, bright and rich. Representatives of the mustachioed-striped animals appear cheerful and mischievous on them.

The image of a cat with acrylic paints turns out rich and bright

Oil

The technique of oil painting is one of the most ancient and universal in painting. It is simple and still popular today. The technique has great potential for transmitting color, volume, surrounding atmosphere, lighting effects.

Educational master classes on creating an oil painting of a cat will help turn such painting into a useful and exciting hobby. Typically, master classes use techniques that include right hemisphere drawing. It activates a holistic artistic vision and creative thinking.

Oil painting techniques are not as difficult as they seem

Unconventional technique

A cat can be depicted using the grattage technique, which when translated from the French word gratter means to scratch, scrape. In Russian, the technique can be called gratography, waxography, or, in a simplified way, the scratching technique, which is easier for children to remember. For it, pre-painted thick paper and cardboard are used. The operating procedure is as follows:

  1. Cover the sheet with multi-colored watercolor paint or wax crayons(in a thick layer). Do not use dark colors: black, gray, brown.
  2. Wait for the sheet to dry.
  3. Then rub it thoroughly with a candle or dip it in hot, melted paraffin. At the end of the process, a paper sheet with a thick paraffin layer is obtained.
  4. Then dilute the black mascara with liquid soap in a small amount. It allows you to lay down the paint layer evenly.
  5. Apply the resulting paint to the paraffin surface of a paper sheet and let it dry. It is possible that for a high-quality drawing you will need several layers of ink.
  6. Next, scratch the image of a cat on the sheet with a sharp object. It can be done reverse side tassels, knitting needle, toothpick. Follow the outlined contours carefully, as mascara can sometimes peel off.

You can use your imagination in terms of the resulting image. To do this, you should experiment in your drawing with light and shadow solutions. For example, make a light figure on a dark background or leave a dark figure, and at the same time depict the background as light.

A beautiful cat can be drawn using the scratch technique

Other alternative methods

Your abilities in artistic creativity can be developed using other alternative methods when drawing. Among them:

  • Finger painting. It is suitable for small children. Original drawing can be obtained by dipping one or more fingers into the chosen paint, and then leaving a fingerprint in the desired place in the picture. If you draw a line with your finger, you can, for example, depict the face of a cat.
  • Drawing with palms. Dip your fist or palm completely into the paint and transfer the impression made to paper. You can apply paint to your palm different colors using a brush. All the details drawn on the palm will be printed on the sheet. Using this method, you can get an image of a cat in different versions.
  • Drawing with a hard brush. Using this method, you can depict the fluffy fur of a cat. This painting technique is as follows: a dry brush is dipped into paint. Next, holding the brush vertically, hit it on a sheet of paper. In this way, the drawing that is depicted on paper is painted. The main thing is that the entire surface of the drawing is painted evenly.
  • Using cotton swabs. This method is one of the easiest to draw. Cotton buds dip it in the desired paint and then leave an imprint on a sheet of paper.

In addition to the methods listed above, there are many others. They are also used to create the image of a cat. These methods include: drawing with wax crayons with watercolors, crumpled paper, using paint splashes and others.

What you need for work

Depending on the chosen drawing technique, certain materials are used. These include:

  • well-sharpened simple and colored pencils;
  • wax crayons;
  • felt-tip pens, they can be used to outline contours and emphasize certain parts of the body;
  • gouache;
  • watercolor, acrylic or oil paints;
  • soft eraser;
  • thick A4 paper (watercolor paper, sketchbook);
  • colored cardboard (for painting with gouache);
  • coal;
  • natural (synthetic) brushes;
  • paraffin (ready-made paraffin candle);
  • black mascara;
  • shading kit;
  • jar for washing brushes;
  • ruler, compass for drawing circles, pencil sharpener;
  • detergent (liquid soap, shampoo).

A drawing set with a variety of tools will be useful for a novice artist

Selecting Drawing Tools

Both the work on the image and the result obtained depend on the choice of materials for drawing. Follow these guidelines:

  • Do not buy necessary items at the lowest or highest cost. Cheap pencils and crayons can often break, draw poorly, and thin paper can be difficult to handle. All this will slow down the drawing process. As for expensive materials, the resulting cat drawing may turn out completely different from what you wanted. It would be a pity if it was purchased too much for this purpose. good paper, used expensive pencils and paints.
  • Give preference to quality tools to make the drawing process enjoyable.
  • When choosing a particular item, consult the seller. He will tell you what is best to buy for each specific case.

Correct paper

The paper should be thick enough and match the chosen pencils and paints. To create realistic drawings, sheets with a satin (satin) surface are preferred. For beginning artists, large-format white sheets are suitable for creating three-dimensional figures.

You need to choose the right paper for drawing, as the final result depends on it

This main tool when drawing after paper. With its help, sketches are made and the basics of drawing are comprehended. When choosing them, consider the following:

  • Pencils can be regular or mechanical. The latter do not need to be sharpened. Spare leads are sold for them (12 pcs.).
  • Pencils are distinguished by their rigidity (hardness). Pencils with a hardness (H) from 2 to 4 are suitable for creating drawings done in light colors, sketches; HB pencils - in medium tones, 5B and 6B are used for dark parts of the drawing, shading, adding depth to the shade the drawing being created. There is no point in constantly changing pencils depending on their hardness. You can use an HB (medium hard) pencil and try applying more or less pressure as you work.
  • The resulting drawing depends on the quality of the pencil.
  • The selected tool should fit comfortably in your hand.

The hardness of pencils affects the quality of the drawing

Which brush to choose

Using a brush, large and small surfaces of the design are colored. It can also be used to draw a gentle or contrasting line. The brush serves as an extension of the hand to create your own masterpieces on the canvas. The convenience of this tool does not depend on the price, but on the artist himself. In this case it is important to do right choice. Each brush has its own display style, so you need to know what kind of cat you want to depict.

Tools differ from each other not only in price, but also in their thickness. The brush is selected according to the following criteria:

  • a wide tool is used to paint a large area of the sheet;
  • use a flat brush to paint the background;
  • using a round brush with a sharp tip, you can accurately draw details;
  • A thin round brush is used to detail the smallest parts of the design.

For those who are taking their first steps in painting, it is better to have large, medium and small brushes. The most good material for the bristles of the brushes is the hair of the column, an animal that is a cross between a ferret, a marten and a mink. Such tools are strong, durable, and of high quality. The disadvantage is their high price. Squirrel brushes, brushes made from the bristles of other animals, and made from synthetic (nylon, polyester) materials are less expensive, but they can also be used to create high-quality drawings.

Depending on the type of paint chosen, the following brushes are used:

  • for oil paints:
    • made of bristles,
    • synthetics,
    • badger.
  • for gouache:
    • made of synthetics,
    • proteins,
    • stubble,
    • column.
  • for watercolor:
    • squirrel,
    • core,
    • synthetic,
    • imitating natural ones.
  • for acrylic:
    • made of synthetics,
    • column,
    • proteins.

A high-quality brush made of any material is distinguished by:

  • distinct form;
  • large capacity;
  • uniformity of application;
  • ability to retain liquid;
  • elasticity.

It is difficult to assess the quality of a brush by color, since the brush may be painted. A high-quality product has glossy, clean and healthy-looking hairs, without stains, damage or bends. The ends of the brushes may be slightly darker than the main part. The handle of the brush should not be too thin or thick; it should fit comfortably in the hand. To ensure that the brushes retain their elasticity and last longer, after finishing work they are washed and stored in an upright state.

Nylon brushes are widely used in painting

Charcoal for drawing

Charcoal pencils produce a blacker surface than graphite pencils, but at the same time they smudge more easily and are more abrasive. Sepia-colored pencils and white ones are used in two-tone techniques.

Charcoal paints bright black color

Shading Tools

Using sticks made of durable cardboard with pointed ends, you can create halftones and gradations. Pointed sticks made from rolled paper are used to soften lines.

Shading is needed to create tones, halftones, and soften lines.

What kind of cat can you draw, choosing a plot

Using techniques step by step drawing Even without being an artist, you can depict a four-legged friend on paper. It’s better to start by creating the simplest image - a funny cartoon cat. Then you can depict adult cat, little kitten.

Next you should draw more intricate images and scenes, for example, depict a realistic cat sleeping, sitting or jumping. A cat can be playful or thoughtful, fluffy, smooth-haired or completely without hair. You can choose any subject for the drawing, depending on your imagination and practical skills.

How to draw a cat step by step

Draw a pet on paper, interesting hero Using a step-by-step drawing method will help you draw a cartoon. How to draw the image of a four-legged friend - with simple, colored pencils or watercolors, oil paints- a beginning artist must decide for himself, using his personal idea of the future drawing and his skills. Even with the help a simple pencil can be created interesting image cat or cat. Coloring the drawing at the last stage of the work makes the picture lively and bright.

For those who want to draw, you can start your creativity with the simplest animated cat. His images are easy to create, since there is no need for the proportions of body parts to be precisely observed; the resemblance to the original is often superficial. Such cartoon cats small parts there is little.

Drawing begins with drawing the main contours, to which simple details (ears, eyes) are added. After this, they begin to add the necessary touches, detailing the image. All lines on it should be smooth, with rounded corners. If you adhere to the successive stages of the image, then it is quite possible to master such a simple creative process.

How to draw a cat from circles

This method of drawing is perhaps one of the simplest. It is as follows:

Profile picture

It's easy to draw a sitting cat step by step. Animals are not in this position too often, since they prefer to lie down or sleep:

  1. Start drawing from the top of the muzzle and ear.
  2. Next, the back of the cat’s head is drawn. There should be a small curved line from it, representing the neck.
  3. This line is then continued downwards to form the back of the animal. It should end where the cat's tail begins.
  4. To complete the line of the head, you need to draw a curved outline from the muzzle down so that the cat has a chest. Below you can mark the paw with a line in the form of a half circle.
  5. To complete the drawing, the tail, second ear, and eyes are completed. To make the image look three-dimensional, add a shadow. The cat can be colored with pencils or paints.

With a simple pencil you can draw a cat in profile

Full face

To draw a sitting cat from the front, first of all, draw a circle. It will be the head of the animal. The shape of the torso will be displayed as an oval. When drawing, you must observe the following proportions and recommendations:

  • the size of the horizontal part of the body should be slightly more than twice the diameter of the cat’s head;
  • the vertical size is slightly less than twice the diameter of the head;
  • it is necessary to draw so that the circle representing the head overlaps the oval of the body;
  • at the next stage, ears and paws are drawn on the cat; to display them correctly, the vertical line of the oval serves as a guide;
  • The final step in drawing will be to display the mouth, nose, mustache, cat's eyes.

The cat turned its head

This scheme is somewhat more complicated, but a novice artist can draw an animal in such a pose.

  1. Drawing begins by drawing an oval for the head, and drawing the body in the shape of a circle.
  2. Draw additional lines (vertical and horizontal) in the middle of the oval, as well as horizontal lines in the center of the circle, and draw triangle ears.
  3. Following the proportions, draw eyes with black circles on the horizontal (auxiliary) line of the oval, and just below the center on the vertical line draw a triangular nose with rounded corners, and from it draw a line for the mouth slightly down, rounding it in different directions.
  4. The ears are softened a little by applying curved line around the ear.
  5. They move on to the image of the animal’s fur and draw a broken curved line over the oval of the head.
  6. Draw the front left cat's paw, the line of the back, and the neck. In this case, they are guided by auxiliary lines.
  7. Finish drawing the cat’s front (right) and hind paw, draw a tail.
  8. Draw the paw pads of the animal, erase the auxiliary contours, and trace the main contours of the image.

Color the drawing with paints or colored pencils.

A cat with short or fluffy hair

You can easily depict a smooth-haired or fluffy cat by drawing a portrait of it. To do this, draw a circle. The next steps will be:

  1. Auxiliary lines are drawn in it in the form of a diameter passing through the center from top to bottom, and two parallel lines symmetrical to the horizontal axis. The top one shows where the ears begin, the central line is for the eyes, and the nose is drawn on the bottom line.
  2. Next, paying attention to additional lines, the cat’s narrow pupils with highlights around them are drawn proportionally from the center.
  3. Hairs and vibrissae are depicted above the eyes, giving the cat's eyes charm.
  4. Draw a heart-shaped nose, focusing on the auxiliary lines.
  5. Small arcs represent the cheeks of the animal, on the sides of the circle, up and down from the center line. Under the cheeks you need to draw a mouth.
  6. Then the corners of the eyes are shaded. Outline the cat's head using rounded, triangular shapes.
  7. The cat's ears are shaded. The neck of the animal is outlined.
  8. Don't forget about the mustache. In reality, a cat has 12 hairs on each side of its cheeks. When drawing, their number can be reduced.

The cat's face can be made smooth or fluffy depending on the amount of fur added. The shape of the animal's head will depend on the amount of fur applied. The head without fur looks like a triangle. The addition of short hair softens the contours. Long hair makes a cat's head round, and with very long fur it becomes trapezoidal.

At the final step, the drawing can be made brighter and more colorful using colored pencils or paints. To add volume to the image, additional shadows are applied.

Animated cat

You can depict a sitting funny kitten with a huge head and an expressive look as follows:

  1. Determine the position of the created cat silhouette on the sheet. Draw two ovals with smooth thin lines: first the head, below it a smaller body.
  2. The oval at the top is divided through the center vertically and horizontally into 4 parts.
  3. Make a smooth shape of the head, draw ears and cheeks with sharp corners.
  4. To further form the muzzle, the contours of large eyes are drawn in its lower part, and the mouth is depicted on an auxiliary horizontal line. You need to draw eyebrows above the eyes.
  5. Then work continues with the lower part of the body. Thin lines outline the contours of the front paws. The body is rounded and a tail is added to it.
  6. The kitten drawing is almost finished. You should erase the excess lines with an eraser, then you can proceed to toning and coloring the resulting image.

In a similar way, you can create images that differ from each other in appearance and character.

Sleeping pussy

It's not at all difficult to depict sleeping cats. Step-by-step instructions will help you draw a shaggy friend:

  • They start drawing with the image of a circle.
  • Two lines are drawn perpendicularly inside it. Vertical line will divide the circle in half, draw a horizontal line below the center, and there will be cat eyes on it.
  • Draw two pointed lines for the eyes of a dozing cat, then a button nose with barely noticeable nostrils. Draw a mouth similar to an inverted image of the number “3”.
  • Use top part a drawn circle to represent the animal's head. First, the cat's ears and fluffy cheeks are displayed. Several strands of wool are drawn on the top of the head.
  • Depict the contours of the body and tail. Since in the chosen plot the animal is curled up, its muzzle should be covered with its tail. You need to define the paw, it will be noticeable in this position, add a few strands of fur.
  • Additional details are applied in the form of eyebrows.

At the end of the work, it is necessary to erase all unnecessary auxiliary lines of the circle; to create a more expressive image, minor strokes should be added. The result is a cute sleeping cat.

Even a beginner can create a drawing of a sleeping cat, made using the step-by-step drawing technique. It is very convenient to make such sketches on checkered paper.

You can draw a sleeping cat in 5 minutes on a checkered sheet of paper.

Features of children's drawings depending on age group

Children adore cats and love to draw them themselves or ask their parents to do so. Even if the baby or his mom and dad do not have artistic talent, master classes on step-by-step drawing of four-legged friends will come to their aid. Even a 5-year-old child can master sequential patterns. It is from this age that he should begin to teach him how to draw. At the age of 5, children can already create a believable image of an animal.

Before you start drawing, check with your child how well he knows the geometric shapes that represent a circle, oval, square, triangle, rectangle, which he will need in his work. He must learn to display them correctly on paper.

The young artist should take a good look at the living cat. If this is not possible, a cat figurine made of ceramic will do. soft toy, similar to a real cat. The child’s attention should be drawn to the proportionality of the body, the ratio of its size to the size of the head, the location of the eyes on the muzzle, nose, and ears.

Since children in preschool age If you don’t yet understand the proportions very well, you can first draw cartoon cats with bright colors, a very large head, a funny smiling face with a protruding tongue, and huge eyes.

Pupils primary classes and older can depict more complex options, for example, realistic cats, cartoon characters. At this age, children already understand that cats cannot have a very large or too small head, and their tail is long, almost the entire height of the animal.

Adults and schoolchildren need to look through photographs in which four-legged animals take all sorts of poses: sleeping, sitting, jumping. You should pay attention to how the paws and tail fold and the back arches at this time. Images of cartoon cats should be made more emotional. Adults need to teach children to give the cat a mood with a wide open mouth, sadness (drooping corners of the mouth), fear (wide eyes), thoughtfulness (displacement of the pupils to the side). You can come up with many similar options.

Video: how to draw a cat (lesson)

The problem of how to draw a cat, cat or kitten can be solved very easily. You just need to choose which technique to use to make the intended drawing, and step by step, using simple tools, bring your creative idea to life.

Cats are incredibly graceful and beautiful animals, so drawing them is a real pleasure. For beginning artists who have recently begun to master graphics, master classes on how to draw a cat with a pencil step by step are suitable.

Creating such cats does not require skill, talent or artistic taste. If a child asks to draw a cat, and time is short, then you can limit yourself to funny images.

Sleeping kitten

Anyone can easily draw such a sleeping miracle. All you need for this is an A4 sheet, soft and hard pencils, an eraser, a little patience and perseverance.

Stage 1: We start drawing a sleeping cat from the head. To do this, draw a circle with a hard pencil and mark thin auxiliary lines. The vertical divides the muzzle clearly in half, and the horizontal goes so that the upper part accounts for more than half of the circle.

Stage 2: Focusing on the auxiliary lines marked in the first stage, we outline the kitten’s eyes, nose and mouth.

Stage 3: Mark the outline of the head with a soft pencil. We draw the ears, protruding fur, and a funny “whirlwind”.

Stage 4: draw the body of the animal and draw the tail. Please note that the kitten is curled up into a ball, so the tail covers part of the muzzle.

Stage 5: At the last stage, the paws and whiskers are drawn. Use an eraser to carefully erase any excess lines and markings. The kitten is ready. If desired, you can color it with paints or colored pencils, or leave it as is.

Mischievous kitten

Any child will love this naughty baby. You need to start drawing a mischievous kitten from the head. Draw a circle, add triangular ears and draw a muzzle. Then comes the drawing of the torso and paws. Play with the kitten's emotions and show your child that the mood of the cat shown in the picture depends on small details. Surprise can be conveyed using widely open eyes; a protruding tongue will add mischief, and by moving the pupils slightly to the side, you can make a thoughtful or sad cat.

Kitten made of circles

Even a child can make this drawing of a cat from circles with a pencil, since it is one of the most simple ways for beginners. The animal is drawn from the back, so there is no need to draw features and maintain proportions.

First, two circles are drawn on the sheet so that they slightly intersect each other. In this case, the diameter of the lower one should be approximately twice as large as the upper one. Then the ears are drawn to the upper part, and the tail to the lower part. Then the mustache is drawn and the fur is randomly marked.

One circle, two circle

Another clear example how to quickly and easily draw a cat with a pencil.

The larger circle is drawn first, and then another, smaller circle is drawn inside it. Add ears, facial features and a tail. Children will love a funny sleeping kitten and can quickly distract a child and cheer him up.

Such a sketch is something between simple schematic images and realistic drawings animals.

We mark the outline of the animal with thin auxiliary lines made with a hard stylus. The sketch of the head looks like an octagon, the ears are triangles, and the body is a rectangle or cylinder. After this we make markings for the paws.

We carry out horizontal line in the center of the head, thus indicating eye level. We draw sketches of the mouth and nose, round eyes. We draw a chin and mustache.

We define the muzzle more clearly. We draw in detail the eyes, nose, mustache and cheeks. Using a soft pencil we draw fibers on the ears, head and muzzle. Then we draw the front paws with claws and pads, and detail the hind paws.

At the final stage, all auxiliary lines are carefully erased. It's time to draw fur. For these purposes, a 2M (or 2B) lead is best suited, but in principle you can use any soft one.

Realistic

Many people think that realistic portraits of pets are not the most simple task for beginners, but in reality not all sketches are difficult. You can verify this using the example step by step instructions to the portrait of the Scottish Fold.

Draw a Scottish fold cat with a pencil

Scottish Folds are loved by many breeders for their disposition and charming appearance. Thanks to the distinctive feature of the breed - ears curved forward and downwards, these cats look so cute that it is impossible to resist squeezing such a mustache. We offer simple step by step lesson for beginners how to draw a British cat with a pencil step by step.

At the first stage, auxiliary lines are drawn with a hard pencil: 1 vertical and 2 horizontal. The vertical one shows the center of the muzzle, so it needs to be slightly shifted to the right relative to the center of the page, since the cat is sitting slightly turned.

The horizontal ones should be parallel to each other, as they indicate the size of the animal's eyes. After this, you need to start drawing the contour of the muzzle and eyes.

Important! For a cat to be proportional, the distance between the eyes must correspond to the size of the eye.

When drawing a nose, remember that its size should be less (narrower) than the distance between the eyes.

Then, using an M or TM stylus, we darken the eyes and nose. More experienced artists If you are confident in your movements, you can use a black pen for these purposes.

To make the cat’s look “alive”, do not forget to leave unpainted, white areas, as in the picture.

For the third step, you will need a 2M (or B2) pencil. Carefully, smooth lines, shading the strokes, darken the areas around the pupils. Notice how the color goes from darkest (around the pupils) to lightest. Then, with a hard stylus, arrows are marked in the direction from the nose. They show directions for drawing fur.

Using the softest stylus (it is better to use B4 or 4M), focusing on the arrows, draw the darkest fur. The crown and fur under the ears should be the darkest.

To complete the picture, draw in the remaining fur. The cat is ready

Attention! The color of the bristles depends on the force of pressure.
