The artist's stage name is formed from the names of two iconic American figures of the 60s: actress Marilyn Monroe and a man convicted of several murders of Charles Manson.

Marilyn Manson's childhood

Brian was the only child in the family. His father sold furniture, and his mother worked as a nurse. The boy’s worldview was greatly influenced by his grandfather’s sexual fetishes, which he described in detail in his autobiography “ The Long Hard Road out of Hell." As a child, Bryans was constantly attended by his mother in the Episcopal Church, and this despite the fact that his father was a Catholic.

The young man received his education at the Heritage Christian School. After 10th grade he was transferred to regular school named after Cardinal Gibbson in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Brian received his certificate in 1987.

Carier start

After school, Brian found a job at a music magazine published in Florida. He was a reporter and music critic, and wrote poetry in his free time. In 1989, the young man, together with a guitarist named Scott Puteski, created a rock band and took the pseudonym Marilyn Manson. After him, other musicians of the group took on fictitious names, and the choice of pseudonym was carried out according to the same scheme.

Initially, the band's name sounded like Marilyn Manson. and The Spooky Kids." In it, Manson sang, and Scott Puteski (aka Daisy Berkowitz) was the main guitarist and drum machine programmer. The band's earliest lineup included Marilyn Manson, Daisy Berkowitz, as well as Olivia Newton-Bundy (bass) and Zsa Zsa Specka (keyboards). Souvenirs with the image were immediately released, and the group was advertised by Brian’s numerous fellow journalists.

The group began to accompany their performances with various attractions. The musicians used everything that could somehow enhance the impression of the listeners: they used sandwiches with nut butter that flew from the stage, girls crucified on stage or sitting in cages, goat heads, nudity, as well as open flames on the stage.

Marilyn Manson, real name Brian Hugh Warner (b. 1969) – American musician, composer and songwriter, rock singer, former music magazine ist, actor, artist. He founded and is the permanent leader of the rock band Marilyn Manson. He formed his stage name by combining two names of famous American personalities - actress Marilyn Monroe and murderer Charles Manson.

Childhood

On January 5, 1969, in the American state of Ohio in the city of Canton, a boy was born, to whom his parents gave the name Brian.

His dad, Hugh Warner, was involved in the furniture trade, then received a position as a manager in a carpet store. Mom, Barbara Warner, worked as a nurse. She was from rural Virginia, and after her marriage to Hugh, she moved with him to Canton with her parents. Brian's maternal grandfather was a mechanic, and his grandmother was an ordinary fat housewife. The future musician was the only child in the family. They lived in a two-flat house.

The Warners lived within a two-minute drive of their paternal grandparents, as well as their aunt, uncle, and Chad (Brian's cousin). Grandma Beatrice came from a very rich family. At the same time, her grandson remembered her with stockings that were always slipping down and a wig that did not want to sit on her head. She was constantly cooking and trying to stuff her grandchildren with either the signature meatloaf or jelly. Above the table in my grandmother’s room hung a portrait of the Pope, already yellowed with time, and a family tree, from which it was clear that the Warner family had German and Polish roots.

Grandfather Jack Angus Warner had a special influence on the boy’s worldview. When Brian was very young, his grandfather was diagnosed with throat cancer. Therefore, the child never heard his real voice, but only wheezing, coughing and wheezing.

Most The old man spent time in his basement, smelly and dirty, like a public toilet. The basement was considered a forbidden place for everyone; it was Jack Warner's personal world, in which he did unimaginable things. On the floor was located Railway, my grandfather drove trains and trains along it. And all the other furniture, every shelf, drawer or closet, was stuffed with pornographic films, similar photographs and junk. The old man was absolutely sure that no one knew what he was doing there. He had no idea that two young grandchildren were keeping an eye on his secret. sex life.

Brian's childhood and teenage years were spent with cousin Chad. They played a lot of pranks: they chatted at dinner, made faces, stole food from the table, and could pour grandma’s jelly into the ventilation hatch. For this they certainly received a punishment: standing on their knees for an hour, with a mop placed under them, after which bruises and abrasions were sure to remain.

In addition to spying on their grandfather, the boys had two more hobbies. IN school age Blowguns became their main toys, and in the small forest behind the house they shot hares with them. They also harassed the neighboring girls with teenage harassment. Occasionally we went to the city park, where they again chased kids playing football with guns, or started a shootout among themselves.

At a young age, Brian had a friend in the neighborhood - a rowdy, blond, chubby Mark, three years older. They started being friends when Warner was eight years old because Mark had cable television at home. Brian often came to him to watch the series about Flipper, and after watching the owner started a game of “prison.” They sat in a huge drawer for dirty laundry, as if in a cell. One day, during such a game, Mark began to pester the teenager. Brian ran away and told his mother everything. There was a terrible scandal, the neighbors quickly threw their son into military school. And after he returned, Brian constantly lived in wild fear that Mark would take cruel revenge on him, his mom and dad, or their beloved dog Alyusha.

Childhood years full of such impressions led to what Brian became - a Satanist and destroyer of morality, Marilyn Manson.

Education

Despite the fact that Brian's father was a Catholic, as a child the boy went to the Episcopal Church with his mother on weekends.

The child was sent to study at the Christian Heritage School in Canton. He was an inconspicuous teenager and as thin as a branch. But even then he resisted religious pressure from teachers and presented himself as a Satanist. He hated the law of God, considered religion a fairy tale for fools, and was fond of the teachings of Darwin and Nietzsche.

And when the teenager learned “ Satanic Bible Laveya looked at many things completely differently. He was especially impressed by the symbiosis of God and the Devil in man. This idea took a fundamental place in his further work and image. First of all, this was reflected in his pseudonym. He combined the name of the angelic actress Marilyn Monroe, thereby showing his bright side. A dark side taken from the surname of serial killer Charles Manson.

Brian attended Christian Heritage School from first to tenth grade, after which the family moved to Florida, where he received further education in normal high school named after Cardinal Gibbons.

Music

After graduating from high school in Florida, Brian got a job at a local music magazine. His functions included reporting with famous people in the world of music, sometimes he wrote articles like musical critic. During this period, the young man became interested in writing poetry.

While working at the magazine, Brian met guitarist Scot Puteski. In 1989 they created a rock band. It was then that he came up with the idea to take the pseudonym Marilyn Manson, and the musical group had original title"Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids."

The composition of the group changed several times; only its leader and vocalist Manson remained unchanged. At first they performed in rock clubs. Then the young group became interested in musician Trent Reznor, founder of the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. He invited aspiring musicians to perform as his opening act, and soon became their informal mentor.

It was Trent who came up with the idea of betting on the show at Marilyn Manson performances. Therefore, during their concerts, you could see anything on stage: men singing in women's underwear, shaved goat heads, crucified girls sitting in cages. Thanks to such shows, the group gained popularity even before the release of their first album.

In 1994, at Trent Reznor's recording studio, Marilyn Manson and his band recorded their first disc, “Portrait of an American Family,” which went gold based on sales in America.

Two years later, the second album “Antichrist Superstar” was released, two compositions from which entered the world charts. Now everyone is talking about the group North America. Since the team used satanic paraphernalia and propagated the image of the Antichrist, in addition to increased popularity, they immediately received a bunch of negative reviews from Christian public organizations. But Manson retorted that this was exactly the kind of excitement he was waiting for. The goal of the album was to produce the effect of a bomb exploding, which destroyed the American illusion of “justice” to smithereens.

The group went on a long tour, shocking even the most notorious fans of obscurantism with their shows. Despite this, the popularity of the team really grew by leaps and bounds. Fans idolized Marilyn Manson, the church hated him, and the authorities continually tried to ban his concerts.

In 1998, the third album “Mechanical Animals” was recorded in the style of glam rock; it was a huge success, in most countries it entered the “top twenty”. In 2000, the disc “Holy Wood” was released. These two albums became the best in creative career Manson and around the world sold millions of copies.

After this, the group's popularity began to decline. Their latest hit“No Reflection” took 26th place in the American charts in 2012. In 2015, the team released the official studio album"The Pale Emperor"

At some point, he wanted to quit music because he was tired of constant control from the outside. record company. The people working there constantly demanded something from him, but they themselves were too stingy. With these thoughts one day, Manson was wandering around the store, and his gaze fell on watercolor paints. They were very similar to multi-colored spots, and this deeply impressed the musician. He bought paints, and going to the planned tour with the album “Mechanical Animals”, made the first sketches.

Among Manson's acquaintances there are many famous painters. For example, the Austrian photographer and artist Gottfried Helnwein supported his endeavor and even became a mentor. Marilyn called his first works “five-minute works” because he didn’t try too hard when he wrote them. Perhaps that’s why they turned out bad, but Manson wanted to quickly become famous as an artist. Early works he then exchanged it for drugs with American singer Leif Garrett, who became a drug dealer. And now the price of these paintings has risen to one hundred thousand dollars each.

Marilyn calls Salvador Dali her inspiration in painting. The musician painted more than 150 paintings, their exhibitions were held in largest cities world: Moscow, Vienna, Los Angeles, Berlin, Miami, Paris, Athens.
