There is also a survival mode, in which you are not constrained by any plot framework and are free to provide yourself with everything you need while exploring the game world. At the beginning of February, the game The Wild Eight from the Yakut studio Fntastic was released into early access on Steam. This is, roughly speaking, a DiCaprio simulator. You will have to starve, freeze and run away from wolves and bears. In the end, however, there will be no golden statuette. Only pleasant impressions and a bit of pride for being able to survive in such wild conditions. And it is really difficult to survive here.

Alone in the forest

The player will take on the role of one of the survivors of a plane crash. The hero finds himself in the snowy forest of Alaska, no connection with the outside world, all that is at hand is a tent and a couple of cans of canned food. Then survival begins: we break trees, collect stones, make a fire, make an ax. Quite a typical start for a survival game, if not for one “but”. All this training, introduction to the life of a savage ends in the first five minutes. And then you die.

Where most survival games gradually take the player out of their comfort zone, giving them tips and time to get used to the wild environment, The Wild Eight immediately leaves you alone with the harsh reality.

Most often, in the early stages of the game, the hero dies of hunger. The canned food you get at the beginning is enough for ten minutes at most, then you have to look for food. It is extremely difficult to kill game when you only have a flimsy stone ax in your hands. Throwing stones that stun the target help, but not much. To drive a rabbit into a trap, you will have to run around it quite a bit. Gathering helps: berries and mushrooms will become the player’s best friends at first. But there are few of them; after all, it’s winter outside. So it turns out that in search of food you either find nothing and die of hunger, or get caught in a snowstorm and freeze, or stumble upon a wild wolf.

The Wild Eight looks just great. The slightly fabulous visual design does not spoil the atmosphere of harsh survival.

After death, the character is reborn where the journey began - near the crashed plane. Leveling up is completely reset, but all previously created and found items can be returned; they remain at the place where the character died. This mechanic forces you to learn from your mistakes, gradually discover the game yourself and follow its rules. You begin to think through your actions several steps ahead. What food to eat now and what to leave for tomorrow; where is the best place to set traps? how far you should go from the camp and what to take with you: a knife or a torch.

The Wild Eight is unlikely to be suitable for those who came home after a working day and, reclining on the sofa, decided to relax and chop wood and build huts. The game keeps you in constant suspense, forcing you to concentrate on exploring the territory, peering into every bush in search of berries (objects are not highlighted here) and looking around for dangerous enemies nearby. And then a pair of wolves suddenly jumps out from behind the trees. Again!

Hiking with friends

The Wild Eight is perceived a little differently if you play it in co-op. The developers themselves promoted the game as primarily a cooperative adventure. And this is felt in the gameplay: the game begins to treat the player a little more mercifully. In a circle of friends, resources are obtained faster, and together with a group it is easier and more fun to explore the territory and fight off wild animals. But there is still not enough food, so more than once you have to watch one of your comrades die of hunger while you hide the last rabbit leg in your bosom.

It is advisable to play The Wild Eight with friends. Then the game becomes friendlier and enjoying it becomes doubly easier.

In multiplayer mode, up to eight people can meet on one map. There are also eight characters, each with their own unique passive skill: someone has good resistance to cold, another creates better items, another hits harder with his hand, and someone needs fewer resources to create things. Only these abilities are felt weakly. If in a cooperative game you at least try to divide labor in accordance with the skills of the heroes, then in a single game the difference is almost not felt. In the same Don’t Starve, each character has bright distinctive features, so you have to go through the story for different heroes in different ways. Here the actions do not change from game to game.

In such houses you can find not only useful equipment, but also some details that tell about the world of the game.

It could become much more interesting if the characters had unique active abilities. For example, the strongman Cole could scare away wild animals, the hunter Cheng could lure rabbits so that they could be more easily driven into a trap, and the local medic Anna could treat minor wounds without using herbs. This way the characters would become truly unique and recognizable. Yes, this will make the game easier for some classes, but it seems to be exactly what The Wild Eight needs right now.

Leveling up your character occurs along with upgrading your tent. Points are earned in accordance with your actions: if you run a lot, you improve your speed; if you hunt a lot, you upgrade your hunter branch.

Stay alive

Surviving in a snowy forest is not the only task in the game. In both single-player and multiplayer modes, The Wild Eight tells an interesting story in the spirit of the TV series Lost. The snow-covered forest in which the plane crashed turns out to be not so wild at all; here and there you come across abandoned huts and hangars. Soon, traces of civilization will lead a group of survivors to an underground bunker. You involuntarily begin to look for a familiar combination of numbers with your eyes. There is even, in some way, its own analogue of the “DHARMA” project.

It's really interesting to watch the story unfold. Especially in the second half of the game, when you finally manage to break out of the circle of offensive deaths and get good equipment. At this point, The Wild Eight becomes an exciting adventure. The challenge to the player does not disappear, but becomes more moderate and honest.

In each new game, the map is generated anew, but the key plot locations are always in approximately the same place.

A little advice: at the start you shouldn’t rush and chase the plot. At first it will seem that you simply can’t keep up with the game. Time flows quickly in The Wild Eight, a day passes in less than 10 minutes, and the player automatically begins to push himself. In addition, it seems that there is nothing difficult in simply moving from point to point. But that's not true.

The game is not in a hurry; you can spend as much time as you want on one forest edge, as long as there is somewhere to get food. Upgrade yourself, provide yourself with good equipment and supplies. Any hike, even a short one, can end in an unsuccessful encounter with a wild animal. In addition, there are times when you don’t immediately realize where the game is trying to take you. You have to run in circles hoping to come across the right place. Elementary convenience is sometimes sacrificed to realism.

Now there are many MMO games in the “Survival in a post-apocalyptic world” genre. Let's consider those games where the main danger is not zombies, mutants or other people, but nature, or rather the cold winter. In my opinion, the best game on this topic is "The Long Dark", but below we’ll look at a few more similar games.
