How to learn guitar at home. Guitar Lessons

Many people consider mastering the guitar an impossible task that takes them long years. This is partly true, but only if you want to master the instrument at a professional level.

Much more often, people want to learn to play the guitar in order to perform their favorite songs in a company or just for fun. In this case, training will not take much effort and time: in two to three months you can easily learn the basic chords and ways of playing.

Don't give up, even if you've already had a bad experience. Talent is only a tenth of success. Determination and regular practice are much more important.

What you will need

  1. Guitar.
  2. Wish. It is even more important than the instrument itself.
  3. Time to study. You can do it easily too, if the desire is strong enough. Moreover, 30 minutes a day will be enough for you.
  4. Teaching aids. There are no problems with them at all: you can buy a tutorial in a bookstore, watch video lessons on YouTube, and find chords on the Internet.

As you can see, nothing supernatural.

Choosing and purchasing a guitar

Let's assume that you have the desire and time. All you have to do is get the tools. They say that any guitar is suitable for a beginner, but this is not true. When the strings touch the frets and cut into your fingers, and the guitar does not stay in tune, there can be no talk of any progress.

A bad instrument will almost certainly discourage you from learning.

Therefore it is better to find good guitar. At first, you can borrow an instrument from one of your friends, and then, if things work out and you like it, get your own. Not necessarily expensive and branded, the main thing is more or less high quality.

There are two main types of acoustic guitars: classical and dreadnought (western). There is an opinion that classical guitars are more suitable for beginners due to the wide neck and nylon strings. The first feature reduces the chances of accidentally touching an unnecessary string with your fingers, because the distance between the strings is greater than that of a dreadnought. Yes, and ourselves nylon strings softer than metal ones, so they don’t dig into your fingertips as much and cause less calluses.

On the other hand, if performing classical compositions is not part of your plans, it is better to immediately take a dreadnought. This guitar sounds louder and more resonant due to metal strings, and on a narrower neck it is more convenient to play chords. Again, when playing on metal strings, your fingers will become rougher faster and there will be no more calluses.

As a compromise, you can take the dreadnought and replace metal strings nylon ones at least for the duration of training.

When going to the store to buy a guitar, take a friend with you who knows how to play: each instrument has many little details and a beginner may simply not notice them. Choose a guitar not only by appearance, but also for convenience. Pay attention to the possibility of adjusting the neck, the tuning mechanism, and the strings.

Getting to know the guitar

The tool is purchased (or borrowed from friends), and you are one step closer to the goal. Take a close look at the guitar.

The larger part is called the soundboard. A neck is attached to it, ending with a head with pegs: with the help of them the strings are stretched.

The neck is divided into frets by metal sills, against which the strings are pressed to produce sound. The first fret is at the headstock, the last is at the soundboard.

There are only six strings. The countdown starts from the bottom, thinnest one.

Guitar tuning

Before you try to play, your guitar needs to be tuned. Don't be alarmed, even a beginner can do this. And without this skill you will not be able to play.

By tuner

You will need a tuner in the form of a separate device (you can buy it in a music store or on AliExpress) or an application for your smartphone. In both cases, tuning consists of alternately tightening or loosening all the strings in accordance with the tuner's prompts.

By the fifth fret

This method does not require any additional equipment. Its essence is that the strings, clamped on certain frets, sound in unison and can be adjusted relative to each other.

According to the rules, the first string should be tuned to the note E, using a tuner (for example, its online version) or another tuned instrument as a reference. However, this only makes sense when playing in a group, so that all instruments sound in the same key.

If you play alone, or even just learn, then the first string can be adjusted arbitrarily by approximately selecting its tension. All others are configured like this:

  1. Press the second string at the fifth fret and loosen or tighten it until it sounds the same as the open first string.
  2. Press the third string at the fourth fret and tune it in unison with open second string.
  3. Press the fourth string at the fifth fret and adjust it to the open third string.
  4. Press the fifth on the fifth fret and adjust it to the open fourth.
  5. The sixth fret is clamped in the same way on the fifth fret and tuned in unison with the open fifth.

It sounds complicated, but in reality everything is simpler than simple. Each string pressed at the fifth fret should sound in unison with the previous one, bottom string. The only exception is the third string: it must be clamped not on the fifth, but on the fourth fret.

The setup process itself is also extremely simple. For example, to tune the second string, you need to loosen it, and then pull the open first string and gradually rotate the second peg until the sound of both strings merges into one tone. That's all.

Let's try to play

Finally we got to the most interesting part - the game itself. It seems there is nothing complicated here. Know to press the strings with your left hand and hit them with your right: you’ve seen this a million times and probably tried it yourself. Why then doesn't it work? The strings rattle, the fingertips burn, and the joints become tired and stiff.

It's all about experience, which comes with practice.

Take your guitar and sit on the edge of a chair or sofa, crossing your legs or placing your left foot on a low stand, such as a stack of books. This way the instrument will not rest against the chair and slide off your leg.

The right arm should be relaxed and the hand should not be twisted. The left one covers the fingerboard, but the thumb is always parallel to the frets. There is also no need to squeeze the bar as hard as you can, otherwise your hand will quickly get tired.

You already know that fret numbering starts from the headstock, and strings - from the thinnest, bottom. Try playing random notes by pressing the first string index finger in different ways. Try to fully press the string so that it sounds clear. It won't be easy, but over time the technique will improve.

Try playing on other strings, as well as using other fingers, letting them get used to it.

Playing melodies on one string

Just making sounds is boring. Therefore, to make it more interesting, you can learn simple melodies on one string and practice on them. Here are some example tunes.

Classic “A grasshopper sat in the grass”:

"Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple:

Introduction to “ Iron Man"Black Sabbath:

Melody from the movie "Boomer":

"Imperial March" from Star Wars:

Spend some time playing on one string. Bring your actions to automaticity and achieve coordinated work of both hands. Practice until the melodies sound smooth and clear, without stopping or stuttering.

During this time, your fingers will get used to the loads, which means you can move on to more complex things.

Playing chords

The next step you have to climb is playing chords. This is much more difficult than single string melodies, but don't be discouraged. Once you learn the chords, you will be able to play full songs.

The principle here is the same, but you will need to press not one string, but several at once: usually three, less often two or four. There are many chords. However, to perform most songs, only five to seven are enough. First, let's learn the three main, so-called thieves chords: Am, Dm, E.

All chords are indicated with Latin letters depending on the main note:

  • C - before;
  • D - re;
  • E - mi;
  • F - fa;
  • G - salt;
  • A - la;
  • H - si.

If there is a small letter m next to the chord symbol, this means that the chord is minor. If there is no such prefix - major. The chords are read either by letter designation, or by name. For example, “a-um” (Am) or “G major” (G).

Chord patterns are called fingerings. A neck with strings is drawn on them. Frets are signed with Roman numerals. Arabic denotes the strings and - in circles - the fingers that should be used to press the strings (1 - index, 2 - middle, and so on). A zero opposite the string means an open sound (unpressed string), and a cross means that the string should not sound.

Let's return to our thieves chords. Here are their fingerings:

To play the Am chord, you need to press the second string on the first fret with your index finger, and the fourth string on the second fret with your middle finger, ring finger- third string on the second fret.

The rest of the chords are taken using the same principle: we look at which frets and which strings need to be pressed.

With these three chords you can already play simple yard or army songs. But it’s better to learn three more chords, with which your repertoire will expand significantly. Here they are:

There should be no difficulties with the first two, but the third is a little different from the previous ones. It uses barre - a technique where the index finger is used to pinch all the strings on one fret. Barre chords are a little more difficult than open chords, but with practice you can get the hang of them.

As always, to make learning more interesting, you can practice on some song right away. For example, on the canonical “Pack of Cigarettes” by the group “Kino” or “Watchmen” by “Boombox”.

You can also find any other songs that you like on the Internet (for example, by searching for “Louboutin chords”). If you come across unfamiliar chords in the selection, you can try to find another one or simply learn something new.

Fight and bust

There are two ways of sound production: busting and fighting. Some songs are played only by fingerpicking or only by strumming, others by both methods. The same chords are used, the only difference is whether you pluck the strings with your fingers or hit them.

Overkill, like fighting, exists great amount. And they are, of course, different in different songs. Usually, in the analysis, along with the chords, it is indicated which fingering or strumming should be played.

Let's look at some of the most common ones as an example. You'll learn the rest as you go.

What's next

Now that you have become acquainted with the basics, studied the chords and have gained some experience, the main thing is not to give up on your training. Your fingers will get sore and tangled when changing chords, and the strings won't always sound.

Don't stop under any circumstances and just keep playing. Every day you will do better and better, and in the end you will achieve your goal.

Finally, a few tips that will help you learn to play the guitar on your own and won’t let you despair:

  1. Always use multiple sources of information to fill in possible gaps and inaccuracies from one teacher to another.
  2. Play every day: Regular exercise will boost your confidence. Remember that talent is only a tenth of success, the rest is practice.
  3. Once you've learned a couple of songs and are comfortable performing them, be sure to invite your friends over and play for them. Listeners will help develop and point out shortcomings.

Warnings

  • Before purchasing a guitar, play the instruments that are available in specialized guitar stores. Among hundreds of guitars you can choose the one that suits you best. Try to reduce sales pressure in choosing a guitar if the selection is small. Don't feel embarrassed playing in front of other people. Visit several stores, evaluate the options you like and focus on one of them.
  • Never install steel strings on a classical guitar, otherwise the strings will not have the necessary tension. The stand, soundboard, or neck may break or bend. The cases have different structures and are not interchangeable. On acoustic guitar It is possible to use nylon strings, but this will give the sound softness, less shine and more suppression.
  • Don't be shy about your playing in front of people around you, including experienced guitarists. They once had the same level of skill as you do now, so they remember their feelings very well. They love to demonstrate their playing skills to novice musicians.
  • When playing, pay special attention to the angle of your left wrist, since you are striving for the goal of learning to play the guitar on your own, without the help of a teacher, then there will be no one to tell you about the incorrect position. Serious injury can occur if you bend your wrist too much. You need to keep it straight! If you are not sure of the correctness, it is better to consult with a more experienced musician regarding the correct placement of the wrist.
  • Try to control your calluses. This will help protect your hand from various damages and injuries. Take the time to polish your fingertips several times a week. Very important point is grinding and polishing existing calluses. The separation of the outermost layer of skin occurs over a long period of time. Be sure to take the time to polish the calluses, otherwise a string may get stuck in the open recess of the callus when changing a chord.
  • Find an opportunity to purchase an electric guitar tuner. This will save you money a large number of sets of strings and will increase your attentiveness in tuning matters. This is especially true for the first string.
  • Playing the guitar can cause finger injuries. You can wet your fingers cold water or hold your fingertips in a bowl with pieces of ice for a minute. This will prevent blisters and encourage calluses to grow. You should wait some time after the procedure before starting the game.

Supplies needed for self-learning to play the guitar:

  • setting block;
  • guitar;
  • books and brochures for playing the guitar.

Most people can teach themselves to play the guitar, although many beginners give up too quickly. Beginners often quit playing, citing lack of time or pain in their fingers. The problem is that they simply don't practice enough. This page may not give you more time to exercise, but it will show you how to successfully become sufficiently good guitarist without the cost of expensive textbooks.

Steps

    Search online and select appropriate instructions. There are hundreds of websites on the Internet offering free lessons, many of which are very well developed and can be applied in your routine practice. There you will find comprehensive answers to your questions.

    Learn to distinguish good musician from bad. If you learn to play as well as your favorite musician after a few weeks, try imitating a more skilled musician.

    Learn the tool. Learn the names and functions of guitar parts. Understand their interaction to produce sounds. Understand how sound is produced by a guitar and how string tension affects the sound. The half hour spent on this basic understanding will be repaid many times over during your practice and play.

    Learn to play chords in different positions. There are 10 different hand positions on the fretboard in which you can play a C chord. Start with a clean C chord, but the more ways you learn how to play a chord, the more flexibility you will have in moving from one chord to the next. This may also come in handy if you decide to try composing music.

    Practice daily (at least 5 days a week) for at least half an hour. If you want to learn quickly, you must fill your brain with guitar. This includes ear training to understand the pitch and intonation of sounds, comfortable posture of your body (including legs, back, shoulders, and arm position), right-hand technique for producing sound, and left-hand technique for controlling sound. The most important thing is to train the muscle memory of your hands on the bar.

    Practice chords and hand positions without sound while watching TV or talking to a friend. Training left hand muscle memory is much more difficult than training right hand muscle memory (excluding string picking). You don't have to use your right hand at all, just play different chords with your left hand over and over again. Watching TV or talking will help you avoid looking at your hands too often. But when you're learning chords, you need to carefully monitor the position of your fingers and hand so that muscle memory retains the correct position. Over time, look at your fingers less often, but still check your hand position. Gradually your confidence in correct positioning will grow up and you won't have to look at your hands as often.

    Build calluses on your fingertips. It hurts. But once the calluses appear, the pain you once felt will disappear. The more you practice, the faster it will happen. There are callus extension devices that you can buy.

    Learn barre chords along with open chords. Don't skip barre chords, although they are more difficult to play. Just like building calluses, playing barre chords gets easier as you practice. Playing barre chords depends almost entirely on the strength of the left hand.

    Exercise your left arm muscles by repeatedly squeezing a tennis ball or similar object for 5 minutes several times a day. (Be careful, this may cause overvoltage).

    Allow yourself to be upset. It's unavoidable. This is fine. That chord you've been trying to play cleanly for days or weeks will eventually sound clear and beautiful. Keep working on it. Repeat until you are sure the chord sounds great.

    Practice. Practice. Practice. “Practice makes perfect.” And these are not just old wives' tales. While practicing, strive for quality. If you practice carelessly, you will reinforce bad habits forever. Best aphorism might actually sound like "Practice makes consistency." Just as athletes rotate their kettlebells by focusing on a specific part of the body, you can play passages by focusing on various aspects- tone, smoothness, speed, accuracy. By focusing on different aspects of music separately, you can improve your skills and improve your playing!

    Play songs you like along with the CD. A CD player is a great device for practicing music because CDs are easy to rewind and repeat even very small parts of a song.

    Start playing songs. There are two ways to record guitar music. One notation technique is called notation, and the other is called tablature. Find articles online. The ability to read both ways of writing is extremely valuable.

    Play on different types guitars. Start learning bass, play classical guitar, play tenor guitar, play electric guitar. You will be familiar with the sounds of different guitars.

  1. Enjoy your new guitar skills!

    • If you have a friend who is an experienced guitarist, try to meet him once a week to play together. Even though he or she is a much better player, you will only save the time it would normally take to learn guitar by simply playing around him, watching him play, and learning from him.
    • Learn a few ways to check if your game is in tune. It may take time for your ear for music to develop.
    • Pay a little more for a good guitar. If you're thinking about buying your first guitar but aren't sure you'll enjoy playing or have the time to practice, buy an inexpensive guitar. If you decide to continue learning, you may be able to buy a more expensive guitar within your budget. But make sure it's not too cheap. Some guitars can take away from your enjoyment of playing. It is very important to consider the distance between the strings and the fingerboard. If the strings are far from the fingerboard, then to obtain good sound you have to press harder on the strings, which will lead to pain and disappointment.
    • Use nylon strings until your fingers are stiff enough to use regular steel strings, as they are easier on your fingers.
    • Instead of practicing longer and less often, try practicing short and often. By doing this, your brain will be able to remember chords and melodies faster. This will also keep your fingers safe when you start practicing guitar.
    • Don't be too hard on yourself if you don't understand chords. Remember, this is your first time. Just take your time and learn slowly. You will gain skills one way or another.
    • Try to change your strings regularly - once a month if you practice regularly every day. You will be amazed at the improvement in sound.
    • If you're looking for an alternative to online courses or want to find more sources for learning guitar, public library There is also a large selection of guitar books.
    • Collect tablatures from different guitarists. There is a 99 percent chance that you will find free tablature online on the first page of search results. Type the song title, musician's name, and the words "guitar tablature" into the search box. You will have a large selection regardless of the genre. If you like them then you can play them
    • If you have an audio editor - GarageBand or , then you can select only part of the song to study. This helps a lot.
    • It's easy to learn the basics of playing guitar with the help of the above. If you encounter serious difficulties, you will need the experience and knowledge of a professional teacher. This page in no way suggests that teachers are unhelpful. This page is just to help you get started.
    • If you are left-handed, you must choose your guitar especially carefully. A left-handed guitar will be more natural to you and may the right choice. However, if you can force yourself to learn on a right-handed guitar, you will have a lot more choice and be able to swap guitars with other guitarists. You don't have to mentally flip the image of the chord to fit your fretboard. In the end both hands have to do quite precise work. You need to avoid choosing one type to avoid regretting your choice.
    • Try video guitar lessons on the TocarGuitar websites. YouTube, Songsterr and ultimate Guitar .
    • Make notes about how you feel and how well you play every time you practice. If you practice daily, you will notice a big difference every day.
    • Choose your practice songs strategically. This resource will teach you how to do it Nobsguitar Newsletter. Most methods involve trying to make some use of technique and theory from one song to another. Choose parts that you love and can play, and parts that challenge your playing skills.
    • Try to keep notes of your exercises to track your progress. Since you can't notice the immediate difference, you may find amazing gains you've made in a fairly short period of time.
    • Try to accompany someone else's singing or playing. This will help develop your technique, rhythm and ear. If you work with other guitarists, try to avoid simple copying.

    Warnings

    • Before purchasing, play a variety of different guitars, which you can find at large specialty guitar stores. These big stores have hundreds of guitars and you can choose the one that suits you best. Don't let pushy salespeople pressure you into buying something when you have no choice. Don't be too embarrassed when playing in front of people.
    • Never use steel strings on a classical guitar. Classical guitars will not match the tension of the steel strings. Strings will bend or break the neck, soundboard or bridge. The cases are built differently and are not interchangeable. You can use nylon strings on an acoustic guitar, but the sound will seem softer, less shiny, and more subdued.
    • Don't be shy about playing in front of other, more experienced guitarists. They were once on your level, and most of them remember what it was like. They also love to share and demonstrate their playing to aspiring musicians.
    • Watch the angle of your left wrist. Since you are a self-study, you won't have a teacher telling you that you are holding your wrist incorrectly. If you bend it too much, you may seriously injure yourself. Keep it straight! If you are unsure, show your technique to someone experienced and ask about proper wrist placement.
    • To prevent your hand from getting damaged, keep your calluses under control. Sand your fingertips several times a week. Polishing and buffing your calluses is important. Over time, the outermost layer of skin will begin to separate. Be sure to polish the calluses then, or the string may get stuck in the open recess of the callus when changing chords.
    • Buy an electric guitar tuner. You'll save many sets of strings and be careful when tuning, especially the first string.
    • Playing the guitar can hurt your fingers. You can place some ice in a bowl of water and soak your fingertips for a minute, or simply pour cold water over them. This will prevent blisters and make the calluses grow faster. Wait a while after absorption before playing.

If you suddenly can't take them all at once, don't worry, just keep practicing. Among the chords there are also quite complex ones, for example F, which is not always easy for beginners. The first thing you need to do is master a technique called bare. To do this, you must learn to pluck all six strings on a certain fret, while the rest of your fingers pluck other strings depending on the chord. The fingers should be perpendicular to the bar. Thumb must be opposed and must serve as a support for others. All you need now is constant practice and repetition in a computer simulator. After learning just a few chords, you will be able to play a fairly large number of simple but good songs. It's best to start with something that's easy on the guitar and famous songs Russian rock groups "Kino", "Alice" or "Chaif". Have you noticed that these are the songs that are most popular among novice musicians? This the right way to get better and at the same time start delighting your friends with interesting music.

Important tip! Sooner or later, if you still want it really well

to learn to play the guitar, you will have to turn to sheet music. For the simplest melodies, of course, the techniques described above will be enough for you, but you must admit that it is difficult to imagine a good musician who is unfamiliar with musical notation. In the process of improving your skills, try to communicate as much as possible with more experienced guitarists, adopt their experience and knowledge. Of course, you can’t avoid your own bumps, but why add extra ones?

If you already play an acoustic or electric guitar and are wondering, then knowing the notes is even more important in mastering this instrument. So, study the notes. Pay attention to songs where the bass line is prominent and try to follow the rhythm. This is the most important function of a bass guitar. Over time, if you already have the skill of playing a regular guitar and an ear for it, you will definitely get the hang of it.
