Another type of contrast makes itself felt in the antithesis: earthly, real - and detached, appealing to heaven or to mysterious predestination.
The content of the sonata is romantic from beginning to end; it unfolds an exciting story about a person, her life, spiritual world, bright dreams and the collapse of hopes. The sonata, like a mirror, reflected the traits inherent in Liszt the romantic and the problems that tormented him.
The musical language of the sonata shows us a vivid example of monothematicism, in which Liszt achieved the highest skill, sometimes creating themes-images of opposite nature from one motive, sounding unrecognizably new.

The first performance of Liszt's sonata in B minor took place on January 22, 1857 in Berlin and was significant in all respects: the performer was the outstanding pianist Hans von Bülow, a student of Liszt, and with this performance the first grand piano produced by the later famous Bechstein factory was consecrated.
In Schumann's piano cycle "Carnival" (1835), many characteristic aspects of the composer's work found expression. This is, first of all, the gift of apt figurative characterization. In the work, relatively independent miniature plays follow one another, creating a single stream of images.
The work, according to Schumann, was created during the Leipzig Carnival of 1835. It opens with a “Preamble”, painting a picture of the holiday; here is jubilant solemnity, cheerful bustle, and lyricism. Next come masks typical of Italian folk comedy. The music depicts a lazy, baggy Pierrot, a witty Harlequin and a cheerful Columbine dancing together with the talkative old man Pantalone. Here are the mysterious masks of the “Dancing Letters” and quick portrait sketches of those who excited the composer’s imagination: the dizzying virtuoso Paganini and the gentle Chopin. The personality of the author of “Carnival” himself is expressed in musical portraits Florestan and Eusebius (under these names, personifying different aspects of Schumann’s nature, he often appeared in print). Florestan's music conveys impatient passion and changeable moods; in the image of Eusebius, softness and languid dreaminess prevail. The ending of Carnival humorously depicts the campaign of the Davidsbündlers. This is what Schumann called the circle of his like-minded people who defended the ideals of progressive art. Gayk Georgievich KAZAZYAN
