A world in which only I was missing. Review of the anime Boku dake ga Inai Machi (“Erased”, “The Town Where I Am Missing”, “The Town Where Only I am Missing”)

This is the first time in my memory when extremely cool anime I watched it on TV during its release. I usually waited until the anime was released in full and watched it in one gulp. But this time I decided to watch the first episode of the ongoing, and it seemed to hypnotize me into watching. Waiting to go out new series it was incredibly long, and watching the new episode was just a holiday. But in order not to go into emotions, I’ll just write down all the pros and cons of this work.

Panache. Extreme detail of the environment and characters. Moderately rich colors, amazing work with light and shadow. Different interesting techniques, like a cinematic camera. “The City Where I'm Not In” doesn't create a setting for an anime, it creates a whole world with truly living characters, all thanks to amazing art. One of the best in recent times, in such cases they say “made with love.”

Sound and music. The low-frequency sound of time rewinding gives you goosebumps, and you want to listen to the songs from the opening and ending songs every episode. And in general, all music fits perfectly into a given situation. Great job.

Main characters. We will consider those who received the most attention to be the main characters. Satoru, of course, it turned out to be very lively. A wonderfully developed character who has a very interesting ability to rewind time. Throughout the entire anime, you are very worried about his investigation. All his motives are rather banal, but you give him some slack for their nobility. The most ordinary person who became a real superhero. Satoru's mother. Just a monster (as Satoru himself says), and there are reasons for this, which reveal Satoru’s mother as very interesting character. Airi. A sweet girl who has great values. Kayo. An almost broken little girl, due to her circumstances, but capable of overcoming any difficulties. Each of the main characters has its own story, its own inner world and external charm. So it’s impossible not to fall in love with them.

Minor characters. They turned out to be not very well developed, perhaps due to the small number of episodes and maximum concentration on the main characters. Therefore, they mainly play the role of a lifesaver, do not have their own history, but even with their small role they manage to evoke sympathy or vice versa.

Plot. I chose this anime simply because interesting name without reading any information about it. The very beginning struck me to the core, a spectacular saving of life by rewinding time. I was ready to watch with great pleasure about a young man with such abilities. But in the very first episode, Satoru is transported 18 years ago, which gives me a slap in the face in the form of “And now you will watch an anime about a shkolota.” But further development the script destroyed all my bad prejudices. It turned out to be a very unusual detective story, because the 28-year-old hero was in the body of a child and could only rely on his own intelligence and cunning. There were also some interesting plot twists, which greatly increased interest in what was happening.

The director's find. The voiceover that voices Satoru's thoughts creates an excellent immersive effect. The stream of consciousness of the hero, sounding in your ears, involuntarily forces you to delve into what is happening, analyze, and come to conclusions. It turns out to be a kind of interactivity, the investigations are carried out not only by Satoru, but also by you and him. Brilliant!

Eventually, “The city in which I am not” as whole work has almost no downsides. This is very unusual story about the beautiful and the terrible. There is an adult thriller with murders, and children's carefree friendship, and real love. A must-watch for all fans of the genre, this anime will not leave you indifferent.

"I'm afraid. I'm afraid to deal with my own thoughts." , - this is how the most popular and controversial anime greets us winter season 2016. I just finished watching it, and, just like the main character, I can’t sort out my thoughts. On the one hand, this is a masterpiece, and also a representative of something rare in recent times. psychological genre. On the other hand, it has several glaring flaws, because of which I was never able to fully enjoy watching it. For the advantages of anime, they are biasedly highly praised, and for the shortcomings, they are biasedly highly criticized. This is the ambiguous picture that emerges around anime. Boku dake ga Inai Machi (“Erased”, “The Town Where I Am Missing”, “The Town Where Only I am Missing”).

Brief information

"The city where I am not" - anime broadcast within the block noitaminA, regularly presenting useful things, such as: , , and others. The anime aired in winter 2016 and consists of 12 episodes. It is based manga, which ended its run just a month before the anime's final episode aired. The anime was produced by the studio A-1 Pictures, to which you just want to take your hat off: these people simultaneously released three (!) top-level anime (, Erased), which previously seemed impossible to me. However, they successfully succeeded.

A twenty-nine-year-old mangaka lives a boring and gray life. He doesn't do well at work, he lives alone, he has no friends. It would seem that this is enough to call Satoru an ordinary, boring loser. However, he has one ability that certainly cannot be called ordinary. “I call this phenomenon rebirth” , — This is how Satoru himself describes it. The fact is that he can go back in time to a period of one to five minutes before what happened, and always appears where something happens. He finds himself in such places, as if someone is leading him there so that he can prevent misfortune. For example, noticing that a truck driver has lost consciousness, Satoru turns the steering wheel, thereby saving a child crossing the road.

But one day a murder occurs and Satoru is accused of committing it. At the very moment when the police were almost capturing him, the ability of “rebirth” made itself felt again, but this time in an unusual way: He went back eighteen years ago, and found himself in the body of an eleven-year-old schoolboy - his younger self. Now he must prevent a series of mysterious murders to protect his friends and change the future. Not everyone gets a second chance...

Characters

Let's start with the characters. This time I won't bring detailed list all the characters, because in this case you can’t do without spoilers, and there’s no point in doing that. I will just share my impressions and comments.

IN "The city where I am not" There is a strange thing that I consider one of the biggest flaws: children in anime act like adults, and adults act like children. This primarily applies to the main character. Just imagine: you are twenty-nine years old, and you suddenly find yourself in the body of your eleven-year-old self. Your task is to prevent a murder and save your classmate Kayo Hinazuki. You have a mother - Sachiko Fujinuma who will believe your every word, and there are friends ready to help, one of whom, moreover, has rare insight. Who would you turn to for help? What would you do if you were the hero?

For example, Satoru, for unknown reasons, decides to do all alone. Moreover, he also behaves like an eleven-year-old schoolboy, and not a twenty-nine-year-old man: he goes to school, tries to be friendly with everyone (which is amazing, because in the future he became an unsociable loner), even takes part in ice skating races, in general, he enjoys life, instead of solving your main problems. What prevented him from establishing surveillance of the murder scene in order to immediately find out who the culprit was? What prevented him from telling his mother about his suspicions? Questions that I could never find an answer to.

Now a few words about children behaving like adults. Remember yourself at eleven years old. Do you remember? For example, I was in fifth grade, played football with friends on the street, and happily watched cartoons after school. But in Erased there is an eleven year old boy named Kenya Kobayashi reading Shakespeare, and possessing some supernatural insight. “Satoru, you have changed. Who are you?" — these are the questions an eleven-year-old schoolboy might ask his school friend. Is this even normal? Especially considering that Satoru tried to behave the same as always.

Okay, let's discard such phenomena and return to strengths Boku dake ga Inai Machi. Best success female characters: Hinazuki Kayo, Sachiko Fujinuma, and in particular - They are all different, but at the same time they have interesting and unusual characters that develop as the story progresses. It's a shame that they didn't spend more time on Katagiri, because she turned out to be the most likable and well-thought-out character. “If you repeat something often, it will certainly come true!” — beautiful phrase from a dreamy girl.

Plot

The premise of the anime is fascinating. I got goosebumps when the hero found himself in the past. Realizing how high you are similar story potential makes you turn on episode after episode. Yes, the topic in general is not new: constant time travel to save your loved ones has been filmed more than once (the same one, for example). It's not new, but it always arouses my interest. Especially if travel has such an important purpose. Therefore, the first episodes Erased They instantly pull you into their net. It's a pity that in reality they are not as strong as we would like.

I don’t want to brag, but I’m already closer to the middle "The city where I am not" I guessed who the killer was. There are moments in the anime that give too obvious clues, while the evidence against other characters is ruined by a couple of logical arguments. Personally, I expected a much more confusing and unobvious detective part, especially given the atmosphere of mystery that has been building up throughout the series. Nevertheless, even knowing who the killer was, I was interested in watching what was happening, until the tenth episode.

The last part Boku dake ga Inai Machi turns into an obscene farce, driven by a series of accidents, which is unacceptable in relation to mystical, detective anime. The last two episodes are especially ridiculous. I don’t know what’s going on in the minds of murderers and maniacs, but what’s happening in the last episodes looks like nonsense. Yes, someone may call this nonsense brilliant psychological moves that reveal the ins and outs of criminals, but this will be nothing more than an attempt to find meaning where it simply does not exist.

For those who do not understand why the anime is called in such a strange way, I will explain. There are two meanings inherent in the name. Firstly, this refers to Hinazuki - that’s what she called her school essay, in which she said that as soon as she becomes an adult, she will go to a distant uninhabited island, where she will live alone. And the city she left behind will continue to lead its slow, measured life. Hinazuki was driven to such a state that she began to think that those around her would be better off without her, and that she would be better off without those around her. Second meaning is revealed closer to the ending, and is directly related to Satoru, but, alas, I will not explain it, since this is the most severe spoiler that I could do.

Panache

As usual, the art in the creations of the studio A-1 Pictures is beautiful. Both music and art in Boku dake ga Inai Machi designed to create a certain atmosphere that correctly conveys such human feelings as loneliness, fear and joy. Used pleasant color palette, the backgrounds are drawn neatly and in detail. I also have no questions about the character design (except, perhaps, for the strangely drawn female lips). I especially want to note the effect of the cropped screen when events of the past are shown to us - this gives the image some kind of pleasant charm and lamp-like quality.

Music

Excellent music that perfectly conveys the atmosphere of the anime and enhances the effect of the art. I’m actually starting to think that A-1 Pictures sold their soul to the devil, because in all three of their creations of the winter season of 2016 musical arrangement is at the highest level. IN "The city where only I disappeared" mostly used classical music, written with the help of piano, violins and other melodic instruments, which was entirely the right decision. Both the opening and the ending turned out to be catchy and enjoyable.

Other disadvantages

Drama. Yes, sometimes dramatic moments shown in Erased, hit the target and make the heart beat faster. But most of them look so forced and artificial that I cannot call them anything other than attempts to squeeze a tear out of the viewer. Most shining example— a moment with Hinazuki's mother and grandmother. Or the moment of the last conversation between Satoru and Airi in the middle of the series. As they say - “I don’t believe it.”

Clarification of certain points. In some cases, the writers overdid it with explanations and hints, and some points were simply left unexplained. We are never explained the nature of the ability that Satoru possesses. Why he is able to travel through time, who awarded him this ability, remains a mystery. What really happened in the eleventh episode? Another mystery. It is possible to live without answers to these questions, but the picture turns out to be incomplete.

Ratings

Characters - 8.0. There are both interesting and predictable characters. The behavior of some of them is extremely illogical.

Plot - 8.0. An excellent beginning, a good middle and a rather stupid ending, built on a series of accidents.

Music - 10.0. A-1 Pictures sold their soul to the devil, I can tell you that.

Drawing - 9.0. Very pleasant, suitable for the atmosphere Erased panache.

Detective - 7.0. One could have expected a much more complex development of events, but with due care it is very easy to determine who the killer is.

Drama - 7.5. Dramatic moments come across as forced and insincere. However, there are also good scenes.

Conclusion

So, it's time to sum up. Even despite some mistakes and illogicalities, "The city where only I disappeared" is still a level above 95% of other anime. It doesn’t feel cliched or stereotyped, it doesn’t try to please everyone. This is the case when the sum is greater than the parts. I give such a high final score precisely because of an attempt (quite successful) to do something special. It is clear that the creators Erased took the matter as seriously as possible and put their whole soul into the creation. Unfortunately, this did not save them from a number of small, but errors accumulating like a snowball, because of which I cannot call this anime a masterpiece. It's good, great, even excellent at times - but not perfect. And therefore I do not see the point in excessive praise, and even more so in the huge amount of criticism to which Erased. It’s definitely worth watching, because it’s not often that psychological anime appears so high level, however, be prepared for a certain degree of disappointment.

The life of a manga artist is not easy. Hard and painstaking work is duly rewarded in in rare cases. Author's works, in which the soul and moral message have been invested, do not always reach the hearts of readers. One day realizing that you are an empty and boring person, incapable of more, is the biggest fear in the author’s life.

Satoru Fujinuma, a not-so-successful 28-year-old mangaka, worked part-time in a delivery service. It also happens that he is transported a few minutes into the past so that he can prevent any tragedy. For example, the death of a child under the wheels of a car. If Satoru fails to complete the task, he will be transported back in time again until he completes his task. Satoru cannot control this ability of his, and who needs to be saved and from what has to be found out experimentally. Therefore, he tries to avoid places where something could happen that would activate his abilities.
One day, with the help of his abilities, Satoru prevents the kidnapping of a child. This leads Satoru's mother to realize who was behind similar kidnappings that took place eighteen years ago. Soon after, she is killed. Now the mangaka has to find the killer and, possibly, change history so that the kidnappings eighteen years ago did not happen.

It ended badly - the girl did not die, but gained the ability to “leave” her body and walk on the “other side.” Having met Yato there and recognizing the culprit of her troubles, Hiyori convinced the homeless god to heal her, for he himself admitted that no one can live long between worlds. But, having gotten to know each other better, Iki realized that the current Yato did not have enough strength to solve her problem. Well, you need to take matters into your own hands and personally guide the tramp on the right path: first, find a weapon for the unlucky one, then help him earn money, and then, you see, what happens. • The winter anime season has arrived, and therefore it’s time for a new series of Anime vs Manga articles. Today the editors' gaze fell on the anime Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi or “The City Where I Am Not In.” Sanbe Kei's manga is excellent in my opinion. Excellent means not only good, but also different from others. Unique deliberately rough drawing style, interesting story, often leaving a lump in the reader’s throat. I'm still waiting for the release of new manga volumes, and when the anime was announced, I eagerly waited for a crowd of newly minted fans to pour into stores and sweep all the manga volumes off the shelves. But now, having looked at the film adaptation, I understand that the events may not live up to my expectations.

Manga Home compares the anime adaptation with the original from Sanbe Kei. This time the comparison turned out to be very subjective and biased, but you will understand why when you read it.

“The City Where I'm Not In” is the work of A-1 Pictures, the creators of Sword Art Online and Haikyuu, Silver Spoon and The Seven Deadly Sins worked on the work. Not stellar, but not the worst writing staff, nothing foreshadowed trouble. The trailers were promising. And then on January 8, the day the first episode of the anime premiered, it became clear that something had gone wrong.

"The city where I am not"

    heroes

Let's start with the main characters. Sanbe Kei's characters look deliberately distorted, but cute, they are memorable. The same cannot be said about anime, where the characters are too correct, the designers tried not to irritate the viewer with the drawing, but they also didn’t want to forget about manga fans, giving them recognizable features from the manga, and after chasing two birds with one stone, they didn’t catch either one, as it was easy to guess. The angularity of the characters has been smoothed out, but not completely; now they look not original, but ridiculous.

It’s worth admitting that Fujinuma’s mother is quite close to what we saw in the manga, but she still has less charm.

The visualization of the time jump in the anime “The City Where I'm Not In” looks like a simple negative of the main character's face, while in the manga the reader is confronted with a craziest inversion of color that affects the entire environment. Fujinuma's anxiety is immediately conveyed to the reader of the original, who immediately understands “someone just died.” The anime failed to cope with this task.

Anime is a product aimed at a wider audience, preserving artistic style Sanbe might actually turn off some audiences, after all, the main highlight of the manga is undoubtedly the plot and the captivating story, the depth and simplicity of the characters. How does anime fare on this front?

    Plot

The plot of the anime “The City Where I'm Not In” repeats the events of the manga incompletely and with many distortions. In some places they are less significant, but in others they can significantly change the outcome of the story if you use your imagination. Already from the first episode of the anime, many events of the manga were excluded: the establishment of friendly contact with Airi, which explained the girl’s unconditional trust in the protagonist, suspected by society, did the writers consider that a few minutes of the hero with Katagiri Airi was enough to gain such trust?

An important element of the manga can confidently be called the memories of the main character. Sometimes entire chapters of the manga are devoted to Fujinuma's memories: about friends, his mother, kidnapped children, lost memories. They create an image of an insecure hero, weak and unable to change anything. In the anime, this impression is not created; Fujinuma’s memories are there, but so little attention is paid to them that the viewer simply does not pay enough attention to them. There were also good shots: for example, memories of Hinazuki. But if you take into account the fact that this shot was the cover and business card of all anime - its quality is quite easy to explain.

But what really cannot be forgiven for the film adaptation is the powerful story of Fujinuma Sachiko, the mother of the main character. The touching and tear-jerking plot of the manga was lost not only due to poor visualization, but also the little attention that the narrative paid to the character and history of Satoru’s mother.

This episode from Satoru's memories does not appear in the anime at all.

In the manga, we saw the character and all the splendor of Sachiko through the prism of the hero's memories, but the anime does not give us the opportunity to enjoy the power of the plot. The death of Sachiko, who revealed the kidnappers and murderers of Satoru’s classmates, does not touch a single string of the soul. As a viewer, I simply didn’t care. Some villains have been kidnapping and killing children for more than 20 years and after all they kill the bright, charismatic and sincere Sachiko, but I don’t care about this, because the anime doesn’t convey the full significance of the moment at all. And what does the hero do after finding the body? He behaves not only like a degenerate, but also as if he had discovered the corpse of an unfamiliar fifty-year-old aunt, and not his own mother.

The importance and anxiety of this “just kidding” from Sachiko’s lips cannot be felt in the anime.

Kay's drawing style is completely lost even where it is so needed. Either censorship or poor work of the animators.

This man is now looking at the body of his birth mother.

The whole power of Sanbe Kei's story is in the build-up of atmosphere, in the anxiety that his manga gives us. This is how drama should be conveyed, without feigned falls from the sight of blood.

And these are not all the differences between anime and manga: in the cartoon, Satoru comes face to face with the killer, he does not try to catch up with him, but ends up caught by the police; in the manga, the killer framed the hero, just as he did with his sentenced to death best friend. The hero from the manga, while fleeing from the police, must have had thoughts about injustice and a lost childhood, a ruined life, thinking about all this, he is probably transported to 1988, the year when it all began.

The first episode of the anime immediately covers 6 chapters of the manga. This is a lot for long chapters of 30 pages. In fact, we were given the plot of an entire volume of manga in 20 minutes. The anime will consist of 12 episodes, approximately one episode, but this moment Only 7 volumes of the manga have been released. At this rate, the plot will end at 7-8 episodes, therefore we will have to see either the original ending, or the writer should slow down the pace of the story. Whatever the ending is, I'm not looking forward to it anymore. I’d rather read the manga, which I advise you to do.
