Perhaps nothing affects the interior more than the passion for collecting. It happens that the customer (more often, of course, the customer) is attracted by the process of collecting interiors as such - and then he becomes his own designer, endlessly experimenting with finishing materials and options for arranging furniture. But much more often in my practice there are people who invite a professional to help them place a meeting dear to their hearts against the background of the existing situation.
What our compatriots don’t collect! Porcelain dishes, bronze figurines, ceramic figurines of animals or clowns, Venetian masks, tin soldiers, carved boxes... The list could go on for a very long time, but when it comes to ways of placing the collection in the interior, it becomes less important for the designer what exactly his customer passionately collects. The main thing is to find out the general parameters of the objects that are to be exhibited in the home space: dimensions (tiny, medium or large), texture (delicate porcelain needs one kind of lighting, and bronze needs a completely different one), the degree of dust sensitivity. Last factor is especially important, because it determines whether the collection will be placed on open shelves or closed ones.
You can be sure that it will be the shelves that will be offered for display. No, of course, you can stuff your favorite elephant figurines on sideboards, window sills and tables, but then they will be perceived solely as “visual” garbage, and not something worthy of the attention and admiration of guests. There is another option for placing the collection - niches with special lighting. But how many niches can be made in one room (provided that we are not dealing with a load-bearing wall that can be deformed)? Well, three, well, four "notches" on different heights, but in no case more, otherwise your room will resemble a fortress wall with loopholes.
In general, humanity has not yet come up with a more universal system for storing and displaying objects than shelving. What about shop windows, you say, remembering your school visit? I agree, it’s a great way to showcase your best, provided that your apartment allows you to install such bulky glazed structures, and your budget includes the costs of thoughtful lighting and maintaining a special microclimate under the glass.
A compromise between a real museum display case and a banal shelving unit is a glass cabinet designed specifically for storing things dear to the heart. Such home display cases can be different in shape and design: square, rectangular, oval, round, concave-convex, corner. It all depends on your imagination and the nature of your interior. Speaking about shop windows, we can’t help but mention the lighting. Even if the shelves of your closet are glass, the exhibits placed on them will most likely not have enough light, which means you cannot do without artificial lighting. By the way, it is better to use low-power halogen lamps and LEDs: they consume little, practically do not heat up and do not harm even the most fragile exhibits. With such light bulbs, for example, you can even illuminate insect collections or herbariums. In general, lighting allows you to place accents, emphasize the relief and volume of the exhibits that are most important to you, and create a special atmosphere inside and around the display case.
Here are just a few secrets of the gentlemen designers. If the shelves are transparent and there are glass or crystal objects on them, you can effectively illuminate them from below to emphasize the structure of the glass and its purity. It is better to illuminate painted porcelain dishes from above or from the sides: this way the design will be easier to “read” by third-party viewers. And it’s better to shine a spotlight on a particularly valuable item so that, like a magician in a circus arena, it will always be the center of attention. If the mysterious diffused light in the window is enough for you, the purchased light bulbs need to be placed around the perimeter.
Their undeniable advantages- near open shelving. Firstly, these designs allow you to sort by topic great amount exhibits and at any time know exactly on which shelf what is stored. Secondly, the rack can be located almost anywhere: under the stairs, under a window, in a corner, around the entrance or interior door and, of course, along any wall. In addition to the function of the storage system itself, the rack can zone the space. In this case, it is enough to install it not along the wall, but across the room. It is important for collectors to remember one thing: in open shelving, it is better to place exhibits away from the edge of the shelf, otherwise annoying losses may not be avoided.
Well, and finally a few simple rules exhibiting treasures at home. The collection looks better against any background, rather than against the light. But the background, in turn, must be contrasting, and in no case variegated, otherwise it will “lead” the eye away from the artifacts themselves.
It is better to place rarities of especially small sizes on the upper, open to view shelves, and large ones - on the lower ones. Your favorite exhibits should be given the most advantageous places - at eye level and a little higher, at arm's length. However, it all depends on how you prefer to admire your collection: walking along the shelves or sitting in a chair and sipping wine.

Not a single museum in the world displays the entire fund at once: from half to three quarters of the accumulated treasures are stored in storerooms. Avid collectors should do the same: rotate collection items. A permanent solution is a glass showcase. If you are sure that all the porcelain figurines are dear to your heart, treat them accordingly - as a valuable collection. Do not scatter them thoughtlessly across all horizontal surfaces of the house. Order a display case, lay it out in a beautiful composition on glass shelves, you can even arrange lighting. At the same time, solve the problem of dust and safety of things.
If there is interesting thing or a collection, on its basis you can build an original interior. It is only important to present your “treasure” correctly.
The first step is to find the central thing and make it the semantic basis of the composition. Old or unusual objects - vintage porcelain figurines, a couple of prints on the wall, an unusual chair or just a collection of albums - can give the interior an original idea. 
The second step is to group. If you have an extensive collection of items, you don’t need to place it one at a time in all corners. There should be only one composition in the interior (or at least the only one in a particular room). Moreover, there should be free space and air around it. Otherwise, the collectible item will not work.
Finally, subordinate the entire interior to the collection. Remove accessories and decor that do not work with your idea, and complement the interior with thematically similar items.
If you have a collection of things and need to place it beautifully in the interior, think about the lighting. The first option is soft background lighting. It is installed behind objects to emphasize their color and shape. This especially applies to porcelain and glass (vase collections, for example). For background lighting, I recommend using a low-voltage strip with LEDs.
The second option is to highlight the shelf itself. And so that the lamp is not visible. A linear LED luminaire with an optical diffuser can be installed along the lower edges of the shelves. And provide a protective edge on the shelf so that the light remains invisible.
Lamps can also be placed on the side of the shelves - this will create the effect of depth and volume. Such lighting design will attract the eye to the exhibits of the collection. 
The way things are stored shapes the appearance of the interior much more than the shade of paint on the walls, the color of the furniture or the carpet. Therefore, the main task of the collector is to think through the issue of storing and placing exhibits.
First, decide what to hide and what to display. Place what you decide to display correctly. Having put so much effort into creating a collection, of course, you want it to remain visible and at the same time fit harmoniously into the existing interior. Let's look at a few ways you can organize your collection and adequately decorate it in the interior.
1. Glass showcase

One of the most common ways is to store collections in glass display cases. Let it be furniture of simple shape and neutral color, if you want to draw attention to exactly those items that are inside the closet. If the showcase is located indoors in a not too noticeable place, and you definitely want to attract the attention of guests to it, a reasonable solution would be paint the cabinet bright color , which will harmoniously fit into the interior.
Remember also one of the main advantages of glass display cases - the collection items in them collect dust and deteriorate much less.
2. Open wall shelves
If desired, you can place the collection on open shelves. For dishes, this could be a hanging display case with fasteners that will prevent items from falling. Please note that dishes or other decorative elements do not have to be placed frontally. If your collection is too large or you simply do not have the opportunity to allocate a lot of space for its presentation, arrange the collection in a way that is convenient for you. The most important thing is that it is visible, and if desired, it will not be at all difficult to examine it.
3. Mini shelves
If you collect objects very small size or small thickness, a reasonable solution may be to order a certain number of shelves. Place them symmetrically on the wall and carefully arrange the elements of the collection. This method is very popular because thanks to simple manipulations you can turn a corner of your home into a real museum.
The disadvantage of this technique is that dust quickly accumulates on the exhibits. And the absolute plus, of course, is in presentation - your collection is unlikely to run the risk of going unnoticed.
4. Furniture rack
A wooden furniture rack can also be a great place to store your collection. You can place in it only those elements that have logical connections with each other - for example, dishes or vases. Or you can place items from the collection mixed with household items. Here it is impossible to distinguish which method is better. In the first case, you focus specifically on systematicity; it is more noticeable in the interior. The second method is not so catchy, but the fact that the collection is diluted with foreign objects also has a certain charm.
You can admire it for a long, long time and look for new, previously unnoticed details.
5. Wall collection
Mount pieces from your collection directly to the wall. If your collection is complete or you at least know approximately how much space it will take up, you can highlight it with a color that contrasts with the other walls.

Place the elements above a chest of drawers or a console - this can be a worthy replacement classic solution with a mirror in a frame.
If your collection consists of kitchen utensils, it will look colorful there. Place the decor along the wall at an even distance from each other.
The place behind the headboard is one of the best places in the bedroom to place a collection. It is noticeable, but nevertheless is not viewed by the owner of the room every minute - therefore, it does not get boring. If you decide to place your collection in the bedroom, think about the fact that this room is much more intimate than the living room or kitchen. Accordingly, not everyone will be able to see it.
You can build a thematic structure from similar elements on the wall. So, in the photo above, something similar to a Christmas tree was created from hats. Experiment and don’t let your collection stagnate.
And, of course, remember that you need to fasten all this very carefully, so that if you want to move the collection you will not encounter the problem of damage appearance walls.

Side lighting can create the feeling of a very deep and voluminous shelf.
Incorporate the collection into your interior
