Master class "sculpture from paper or paper-plastic." Materials and tools necessary for work

Original creativity Patty and Allen Eckman.

Artists first mix acid-free cellulose using raw cotton, all of which is placed in a mold, compressed by vacuum or by hand. In this case, excess moisture is gradually removed, but the drying process is very long. When the cast is removed from the mold, then the finishing process begins, the most delicate one. Some details are removed, some are added, which ensures very fine detailing.

Paper sculptures by Calvin Nicholls. Animalism in sculpture

Calvin Nicholls – unique artist and sculptor. His sculptures (which can be called three-dimensional paintings) are created from paper that is common to us. Paper cut and glued in a special way creates amazing detail in the works. Calvin mostly creates paper portraits of wild animals - bears, lynxes, monkeys, birds and others.
Each voluminous creation takes a lot of time and painstaking work. The first step is to create a rigid skeleton, which is the outline of the future figure. The frame gives the work strength. All the others are already attached to the frame small parts. Each piece is cut and textured using a selection of metal and wooden instruments. During the work process, the sculptor constantly monitors the light and shadow on the sculpture. Having completed the main part of the work, the author creates an even more detailed and complex image using studio lighting. At this stage of work, all the nuances of the sculpture are completed.
And finally – photography.

Peter Callesen sculptures from a single A4 sheet

Danish-born artist Peter Callesen creates incredible works of art from a single A4 sheet of paper. Through a surprising combination of cutting and folding, Callesen creates incredible scenes from the very simple material.
According to him in my own words By eliminating all the information and starting from scratch on a blank white A4 sheet, he feels that he has found material that everyone can relate to. At the same time, the A4 sheet is neutral and open to accept any meaning. The thinness gives the paper sculptures a fragility that highlights the tragic and romantic theme of his sculptures.

Jeff Nishinaka. Paper sculpture

Jeff says that he will always become an artist, the most an ordinary artist, but over time he realized that he did not have the necessary abilities and talent. He started working with paper by accident. During his studies, he was given assignments in two subjects: graphic design and according to the drawing. The task was to create something new from some material. He chose paper. And this choice, the art of creating paper sculptures, gave him a sense of what his calling was, in what area he needed to work. He was attracted by the clear boundaries in working with paper and tangible results. And he always enjoyed creating something with his own hands.

Paper stories Peter Callesen
What could you do if you were given an ordinary piece of white paper, glue and scissors? Surely, there are a lot of interesting things... I can bet, however, that such things that one amazing person does creative person, a designer whose name is Peter Callesen, and who makes entire works of art from ordinary white paper, will not even cross your mind!

Peter was born in 1967 in Denmark, graduated from the school of art and architecture, as well as the academy in the city of Arhus. Then he studied in London. He lives and works in Copenhagen, but has already traveled almost all over the world with his exhibitions.

He makes amazing things by hand from paper, the most common material, using scissors and glue. volumetric sculptures, true works of art in their detail!

The main idea that Peter Callesen comes to us with is the interaction and interflow of two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality. The author tests the capabilities of an ordinary flat sheet of paper to magically transform it with a hundred (or even a thousand) cuts into volumetric reality. Three-dimensional sculptures appear from paper, leaving behind them on the plane a kind of negative silhouette, which is actually true face figures.

Most of the works are made from ordinary white A4 paper, but there are also more large-scale works. For example, a parallel staircase:

Man in full height or... a paper stepladder:

In some works, in addition to paper, they also use acrylic paints for coloring paper:

Sometimes only the background used in the frames in which some works are enclosed is painted:

The author has both sentimental works (with butterflies, flowers and birds) and dark side, instilling in us a feeling of fear, depicting death.

Almost always paper art the author is fraught with deep philosophical questions about the essence of man, his purpose, history...
Paper is one of the most widely used media for transmitting information, which is why we all read information, but almost never consider it as a material in itself. This is only what we consume, what is only a carrier of information for us. However, this simple and widespread material can tell stories not only written or printed on it! An avalanche rushing towards a house, a ballerina, ice breaking into a million pieces and many others. And these stories are told by the very form of paper, by the figures made from it.

Or here autumn story about an apple falling from a tree:

But the wave washes away the sand castle:

Many works depict various architectural units, pay attention to the details

Here it is, the former greatness and the sad sight of the present

Look how authentic the cut on a fragment of a column looks, it doesn’t even look like paper anymore, more like a real stone:

Peter Callesen's work is, on the one hand, quite funny; on the other hand, they are absurd.

It's interesting to be able to see what the author does: a cut out paper double bed turns into a single bed. But this is also a story, and a sad story.

And it's fantastic how far you can actually go beyond a regular A4 sheet...
For example, here's all human life: from birth (crib, below) to death (coffin, above):

And this is a river, look at the people traveling down this river in a boat. Do they know that further down the river is really only down?

A practical application of this article would be to add some simple ideas to our POP-UP card arsenal. From the author we can also learn patience and ability in the most simple things see something amazing.

Tsai Lun's paper recipe was as follows:

  • crush mulberry fibers, wood ash, rags and hemp;
  • mix with water and place the resulting mass on a mold (wooden frame and bamboo sieve);
  • After drying in the sun, smooth this mass using stones.

The result was durable sheets of paper.

Types of paper plastic

1. Origami ( translated from Japanese as “folded paper”) - ancient art folding paper models, which originated in Japan. Much like crumpling paper, but in this case folds and bends are not random, but are subject to the will of the artist; he himself decides where and when to make them.

Types of paper plastic

2. Quilling paper rolling or paper filigree. This is the art of creating volumetric or planar compositions from strips of paper (Translated from English "bird feather" Originated in Europe at the end of the 15th and 16th centuries. IN medieval Europe monks created elegant medallions by twisting paper with gilded edges onto the tip of a bird's feather.

Types of paper plastic

3. Paper sculpture which is often called paper plastic (“plastic” from the Greek word "to sculpt" because in terms of the type of creativity it is more similar to sculpture than others and allows you to create semi-volume and volumetric compositions. In paper plastic, all products are hollow or empty inside; only their shells are created.

Materials and tools required for work:

  • 1.Whatman paper ½
  • 2. PVA glue.
