I was born in 2001, and many of the things that were just becoming cult in the 90s were already similar when I learned to watch movies consciously. Today I would like to talk about a real diamond among the huge number of good animated series of the 90s, the cult show “Batman: The Animated Series”, which was broadcast from 1992 to 1995.

The point is that I never really cared about this series. I loved Burton's old Batman films and even Schumacher's "comedies" about the character. But it was this series that I had a hard time with. In comparison, I liked MARVEL animated series such as Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. And I still have dark memories of “Batman” of those years, although I still love the continuation in the form of the animated series “Justice League” with all my heart. And now, at 16 years old, I decided to completely reconsider the project. And now I understand why I had such viewing impressions.

When you watch Batman in the 90s, you won't see any colorful characters (except the Joker, of course) or bright colors, since the entire animated series was filmed using black paper. Literally, everything here was drawn on black paper, this creates an atmosphere of gloom and seriousness of what is happening. And my mind couldn't process a story about a superhero in such a dark way in early childhood. This project follows the legacy of Tim Burton and general atmosphere Very reminiscent of the director's films. Even capital theme song Danny Elfman is heard both in the opening title sequence and throughout each episode.

But the main advantage of the series is its plot. Since the beginning of the revision of this project, I have kept notes, rating each episode on a ten-point scale. Looking through the notes now, I realize that not a single episode in my rating fell below 9 points. The show really is that good and the plot is what makes it so special. The show took all the best from Burton's films and the most successful Batman comics - darkness, seriousness of what is happening, living heroes. Yes, we see truly living characters with whom we want to empathize. Literally, if at the beginning you noticed a cartoonish villain who was laughing like crazy, then he will not remain like that until the end - you will see him reveal himself, develop, try to become better. At certain moments you really feel the pain of each of them - misunderstanding and non-acceptance from society leads to the emergence of those very “villains”. Here, the authors often touch on this topic, thereby revealing the characters' personalities more deeply. When the viewer sees real people on the screen, it is easier for him to associate himself with them. And sometimes the history of the development of a certain negative character looks much more interesting than the simple struggle of good, in the person of Batman, with evil, in the form of a large number of his enemies.

Also, watching episode after episode, I realized that the series is trying to be as close to our reality as possible. There are no laser beams, aliens or zombies here. Although, comic book connoisseurs know that Batman lives in a world where all this exists. But in the 90s, this approach, when they tried to explain everything with scientific and pseudoscientific theories, made us believe everything that was happening even more. This highlighted Batman himself, who became an excellent role model for many children and teenagers, while remaining the most real and living superhero.

The very presentation of the Batman story is surprising. The death of his parents is not just an incident that happened to him once upon a time, but something that happens to him every day, which he tries to fight. Already in the first episodes we are shown how severe Bruce/Batman’s trauma is, how he tries to fulfill the promise he made to himself that day in the alley. While watching the series, the viewer sees a person who is trying to change the world by saving other people. The character has always been deep for me; I would call him the Don Quixote of the modern world. And in the series, this thought did not escape my attention, often confirming it with many episodes, but also giving other topics for discussion.

It would not be amiss to note some plot motives. Very often in comics, authors try to point out many social problems in society, but as a rule, readers do not pay attention to this special attention, enjoying the colorful pictures and the action depicted on them. In this animated series, the creators also made efforts to convey important thoughts to their viewers. There are many episodes dedicated to problems with corrupt officials, environmental pollution, the influence of the media on society, the fate of previously popular actors who are now thrown out onto the street. It is truly unexpected for an unprepared viewer to see all this in an animated series about a comic book superhero.

So, why do I call this creation a classic of world animation? Throughout its existence, it has repeatedly proven that it continues to live and inspire authors to write and film new stories about Batman. To this day, they look up to this work, because in fact it was Tim Burton’s “Batman” and “Batman: The Animated Series” that became the first serious rethinking of the character on the screen. Before this, it was shown only in a humorous way, but fortunately the time has come for real breakthroughs. Without the slightest hesitation, I can call this animated series a masterpiece. People still love and rewatch it.
