How to draw beautiful grass with a pencil. How to Draw Grass Using Different Materials

Here's a quick tutorial on how to paint grass with light and shadow using Photoshop. The key step is to separate the shadow onto a separate layer, this way we make changes easier

Grass

Start painting the grass in one layer. The default grass brushes are pretty good, but there are a few settings you can tweak:

Shape Dynamics - Flip X Jitter (But not Flip Y Jitter, since we don't want to turn the grass upside down) Size Jitter, Angle Jitter, Roundness Jitter.

Scattering

Color Dynamics - Hue, Saturation, Brightness. I disable the Background/Foreground Jitter, but this can be useful if you select two shades of green and control with pen pressure.

Shadow

Add another layer and paint the shadow of the leaves that the tree casts. Use a blue or light blue tint for this. For the leaves I use a brush from Xong Bros, you can download it , on my dedicated brushes page.

Warp the shadow layer (CTRL-T) to give it some sense of perspective and change the layer blending mode to Multiply. You can go back to change the color of the shadow if you think it's too light or too dark.

On this moment the shadow appears as if it falls on a smooth, flat surface, ignoring the texture of the grass. To see what exactly I mean, look at the photos below:

Use the grass brush again: paint and use the eraser on the shadow layer. Remember to use the same blue/cyan color!

Glow/Light flare

Add a new layer and change the blending mode to Screen. Use a soft round brush to paint the area around the shadow.

As extra step, you can again add a new layer and change the blending mode to Screen. The bright area can be made with the same brush that you used for the grass before.

Result

This is what the final version of the work looks like, which I posted online on my own behalf.

Welcome to another lesson! This time we'll look at how to draw grass using copics markers, as well as a method using digital programs(Photoshop, Paint tool SAI). But, first, I would like to tell you some rules for drawing grass.

Remember that grass does not grow evenly! She grows in the most different directions.

Therefore, remember that if you draw it all straight up, as in example A, it will look rough and unnatural. Even after using a lawnmower, the grass may not have this effect. The only time grass can be drawn in one direction is when you are drawing a very strong wind (and then the grass should be quite long!)

Rule 2.

Grass has many colors and shades!

I took each of these colors on the right directly from this photo of grass in my yard to show you that grass contains more than just color!

The grass contains a variety of colors that range from yellow-green to dark green. Please don't make your grass one color, or even just two! The colorful grass looks like believable grass!

Digital painting of grass (Photoshop, Paint tool SAI)

Start by painting the plane lightly green, where your grass should be.

Now select a regular brush with hard edges and yellow or light green color, and then start adding lines of different sizes and directions (the blades of grass will look longer in the foreground)

After you have painted the entire surface with light blades of grass, take a dark green one and repeat the previous step.

Do the same steps again with a less saturated green color. Then add some smaller blades of grass in dark green and light green for more complex type.

Coloring grass with Copics markers

Materials:

  • Copic paper (cardboard can replace this paper)
  • Copic markers in the following tones: YG03 (yellow green), YG66 ( green peas), YG17 (green grass), YG67 (moss)

Chaotically and carelessly paint the surface with YG03 where you want the grass to be.

Take the color YG66 and add thick and large strokes on top, directed from the bottom up, but in different directions (right and left). Remember that grass grows in different directions!

We continue to add thick strokes using the color YG17. If you are painting grass over a large area, then the further it is from you, the fewer strokes you should have.

Now select the darkest green YG67 and draw thin strokes. There is no need to fill the entire area of the grass, try adding these strokes between the other blades of grass you painted.

You can stop at the last step if you want to draw grass that stands out and has a more contrasting appearance.

But since the grass is usually not the main element of the painting, I like to soften all the lines and blend the grass with YG03, which will help make it less detailed.

This concludes our lesson! I hope it helps you)

Now select a regular brush with a hard edge and a yellow or lime color, and then start adding lines of different sizes and directions (the blades of grass will look longer in the foreground)

Herbs are even smaller objects, but often very distinctive. Nevertheless, drawing grass quite common. ?

Thickets of reeds, sedges, cattails, etc. (Fig. 1). To depict grass in general, the type of shading that best conveys this type vegetation (Fig. 3 -6).

Figure 1 - How to draw reeds, cattails, and sedges

We advise you to find out that from everything that is said in this article, one thing is clear: the draftsman must convey the type of plant so that the plant can be recognized without much difficulty. Drawing just a tree is completely insufficient for our purposes. And in order to depict trees, shrubs and grass typically, it is necessary to study them from the point of view of forms. It is especially important to sketch typical trees in autumn, winter or spring, when there are no leaves and when the character of the trunk and branches is especially clear. That's why we especially recommend sketching diagrams deciduous trees at a time when there are no leaves on them. Then, when the “skeleton” of the tree has been studied, sketching the trees in summer time it will go very simply.

To conclude this part, we provide several examples of drawings that depict various shapes relief along with vegetation (Fig. 118-123).

Shrubs and subshrubs

For some geographical areas where there are no forests, shrubs and subshrubs are very characteristic. Shrubs usually grow in masses, and therefore in drawings they most often have to be taken from a distance. These are either groups, or stripes (Fig. 1), or scattered single plants. In semi-deserts and high mountain areas (with a lack of moisture), shrubs and subshrubs form cushion-shaped groups, closely pressed to the ground. In every special case You should carefully consider the nature of the plant, and then draw these groups from afar.

Drawing landscapes on paper is a very painstaking process. It is often difficult to convey the shape of miniature elements, which is why the realism of the painting suffers. Usually the stumbling block for beginning artists is precisely vegetable world. As the work progresses, a lot of questions arise, and one of them is: how to draw grass?

Materials and complexity

You can depict vegetation using any art materials, starting from a simple pencil and ending with pastels. However, the choice of means for a given task significantly affects the complexity of its implementation.

For example, oddly enough, it will be most difficult to draw grass with a slate pencil. You will have to put a lot of effort into achieving a noticeable color transition and highlighting each sprout.

It will be a little easier to depict what you have planned with dry pastels, but in this case you will need knowledge about color or practical skills. Before drawing the grass, it is advisable to make several test sketches on a separate sheet of paper.

Paint work is simple, but... realistic picture you'll have to tinker. In nature, the shades of the leaves of one plant can differ, and the same happens with grass. Two blades of grass growing side by side are not the same because the pigment distribution is uneven. Thus, when using paints, you will first need to select the desired shades and only then start creating.

grass step by step with a pencil

To reliably depict the green cover of the soil, you should spend some time observing it, or at least look through several different photographs on the Internet. It is necessary to examine in detail the shape of the blades of grass, understand how it behaves under the influence of various factors, and most importantly, how the plants look from different angles.

To work you will need:

  • eraser;
  • a sheet of paper of any size;
  • pencils of different hardness.

Stages

  1. Before you draw grass with a pencil, you should remember that it grows in one direction. Some blades of grass may deviate, but the entire cover should not be ragged and puff up chaotically. Guided by this principle, you need to outline a barely noticeable outline of the vegetation, not forgetting about the direction of the elements.
  2. Place light accents of light in the background, guided by the position of the sun.
  3. Draw individual elements and the foreground more carefully.
  4. Start shading, adding shadows and arranging reflections.

After completing this stage, the drawing is almost ready, all that remains is to finalize it and add additional accents at the artist’s discretion.

How to draw grass with gouache

The technique used to depict vegetation depends on the material chosen. For example, drawing grass with gouache is quite simple. The principle is the same for the foreground and background.

To paint, you will need a thick brush and a palette with ready-made shades. The entire landscape should already be ready, the grass should be depicted last.

  1. The paint is applied with light strokes from the bottom edge of the sheet. It is advisable to take a little gouache on the brush, otherwise desired effect will not work.
  2. The length of the stroke depends on the height of the grass. You need to pull it exactly to this point, gradually reducing the pressure on the brush.
  3. The color of the blades of grass should not be the same, so you should not try to even it out.

This method is suitable not only for filling foreground. Guided by the principle of how to paint grass with paints, you can stretch the vegetation cover over the entire sheet. In this case, you must first apply short strokes to the background and, after waiting for the gouache to dry, continue working in layers.

Grass in watercolor

In order for a watercolor drawing to come out successfully, you need to stock up on masking fluid in advance. It will cover those places that are painted last (in in this case this is grass).

Painting with watercolors is easy:

  1. You need to make a light pencil sketch depicting a landscape.
  2. Carefully fill the outline of each blade of grass with masking liquid.
  3. Next, you can safely apply paint to the part of the sheet that is filled with plant cover, creating a general color background. It is advisable to use several shades of green and yellow. Don’t be afraid to paint over areas covered with masking liquid - the product does not allow pigment to pass onto the paper and is easily removed along with excess watercolor.
  4. This stage should be started when the landscape is almost ready. Before you paint the grass, you need to clean the sheet of masking fluid. You can do this with your nails.

In clean areas, all that remains is to paint blades of grass in watercolor. It is worth using shades that were not used to create the background, but are close to them in order to highlight each element.

Pastel

The vegetation cover should be drawn with short shading, using all the shades of green and yellow available in the arsenal. The main thing in such work is color, so accents and light and shade need to be placed correctly, preferably by checking with the original.

Particular care must be taken when applying dark color, because not everyone light shades are able to paint it over. The same applies to bright yellow.
