Let's start with examples:

  1. The parents turned to the doctor because the child suddenly began to lose hearing. The girl simply went deaf. After examining the child, medicine came to a dead end, since there was no reason for the hearing loss. But as it turned out, the reason was hidden much deeper. Mom and Dad didn't get along with each other at all. Every day there were scandals in the family, the parents not only shouted at each other, but yelled furiously. It would seem for a child this state It should have become the norm, but it doesn't. The child, on a subconscious level, did not want to hear the screaming and swearing of those closest to him. That's when deafness began to develop. Mom, having learned about her daughter’s diagnosis and the cause of the disease, was extremely excited. Parents managed to moderate their ambitions. And here it is, a miracle, the child’s hearing began to improve over time.
  2. The woman complained of shortness of breath. She was out of breath for no reason, she had no allergic reactions or bronchial asthma. She was unwell at certain times of the day. Doctors could not make a diagnosis. The psychotherapist was able to determine the cause of the disease. It was hidden in distant youth. It was a fear that developed into a phobia and resulted in a physical illness.

There are many similar examples that can be given. This is the same psychosomatic disease.

Psychosomatics - (translated from Greek - soul and body), a branch of medicine and psychology that studies psychological reasons, as a result of which a person can develop physiological diseases (somatic). In other words, due to psychological stress or disorders, a person can develop any disease.

Today, psychosomatic diseases can very often be found in people of any age. Not only adults, but also children and even old people suffer from them. Psychologists especially often note such diseases in adolescents.

What is the reason for this? Many factors contribute to the development psychosomatic diseases in teenagers. The most popular is misunderstanding of parents, shouting, unreasonable punishment, and so on. Treatment of such diseases is a rather complicated process; it includes not only drug treatment, but also systematic visits to a psychotherapist.

Psychosomatic symptoms of diseases also include “groundless” health complaints. When a person is tormented by physical ailments, for example heart pain. But examinations show absolutely nothing abnormal. Despite research, attacks of heart pain do not stop.

Another example of psychosomatic symptoms is the absence of a cause of illness. There are symptoms, a diagnosis has been made, but there is simply no cause. In this case, drug treatment can only help temporarily and relieve symptoms. But over time, the disease inevitably returns.

Story

Psychosomatic diseases are one of the most complex diseases. The connection between physiological diseases and a person’s mental state has been studied for a very, very long time. Hippocrates himself repeatedly raised the issue of this relationship. But the terminology was introduced relatively recently. The word “psychosomatics” began to be used only in 1818.

The works of M. M. Kabanov became widely popular in narrow circles. in 1990. Entire scientific schools are studying this issue. They study the causes of psychosomatic diseases. But one thing is for sure: scientists have not yet come to a single correct decision. From time to time, controversial issues arise that leave people scratching their heads. greatest minds our time.

Classification of psychosomatic disorders

For a detailed study of psychosomatic diseases, as well as diagnosis and treatment, their classification is necessary.

First group

This includes people with psychosomatic functional disorders. With such psychosomatic abnormalities, there is no disease or organ damage. As a rule, these are insomnia, constipation, nervousness, and enuresis. Children and teenagers are especially common in this category. It is not uncommon today to encounter a baby with a psychosomatic sleep disorder. This is not just a sleep disorder - it is practically a lack of sleep. The child falls asleep for a short time, wakes up screaming, and is constantly nervous and irritated.

Symptoms of psychosomatic disorders do not occur easily in adults either. If it is, for example, insomnia, then sleeping pills practically do not help the person, and if they help, then for a short time. Light, interrupted sleep causes irritability in a person.

Such functional deviations certainly begin after nervous stress and disorders experienced by a person. It is difficult to list what exactly the disorder can develop from, since a person is an individual creature. And if for one, for example, a quarrel in the family may mean practically nothing, then for another it will result in serious nervousness. Only a psychiatrist, together with a qualified psychologist, can diagnose this type of deviation.

Second group

The second group of psychosomatic diseases includes a number of diseases: obesity, anorexia, bulimia, gastritis, dermatitis, ulcerative colitis, bronchial asthma, abstract bronchitis, Crohn's disease, all kinds of ulcers, pancreatitis. The list of diseases is certainly much longer, but these are the most common. The cause of the disease is still the same, nervous stress. Both a single nervous shock and regular nervous tension can lead to such diseases.

If the disease arose from nervousness, then it must be dealt with, first of all, with the help of a psychiatrist. It is rare that a person himself can determine the psychosomatics of his illness, unless the illness began to develop immediately after experiencing stress. But as a rule, the disease develops over time. In such cases, it is very difficult to diagnose psychomimetics.

It is not easy for even an experienced specialist to name the cause of asthma in a child. It could be fungus on the walls of the house where the child lives, or it could be a divorce of parents. Therefore, if such diseases occur, consultation with an experienced psychiatrist will never be superfluous.

Third group

And the third group combines the most complex psychosomatic diseases. These are oncological formations, diabetes mellitus, kidney failure, and other, usually chronic, diseases. Of course, in this case, only treatment by psychologists will be ineffective.

There are many diseases that do not fall into any of the three categories, but are also caused by mental disorders. Despite this, the classification of psychosomatic diseases contributes not only to diagnosis, but also to treatment. For each of the three groups, its own diagnostic and prevention method was developed.

Psychosomatic diseases in children are classified separately

Treatment of psychosomatic diseases

Treatment of psychosomatic disorders is a long process, it requires the use of all kinds of psychotherapy. But psychotherapy does not help all groups of diseases. There are diseases for which psychotherapy is used only in combination with drug treatment. Treatment largely depends on the patient.

If a person understands the cause of his illness, then treatment proceeds much faster and more effectively. In cases where a person does not understand the reason, an experienced psychotherapist tries to figure it out, and accordingly more time is spent on this. But cases when a person not only does not realize, but also subconsciously rejects the cause of psychosomatics, are quite complex.

No less complex cases include childhood moral traumas that develop into physical illnesses over the years. Diseases arising for such reasons require long-term treatment. And it is not always possible, even for highly qualified specialists, to completely rid a person of the disease.

It should also be noted that psychotherapy is selected for each person exclusively individually. For two people who suffered from the same psychological stress, against which the disease developed, different courses of treatment are selected.

The psychotherapist selects a possible suitable range of treatment methods for the patient. Sometimes techniques change during the treatment process, since one or another technique may not be suitable for a person. When selecting methods, the nature of the patient, the degree of his illness and the classification of the disease must be taken into account. There are a lot of methods. Most often used:

  • Psychotherapy of revealing conflicts.
  • Family psychotherapy.
  • Individual psychotherapy.
  • Group psychotherapy.
  • Supportive psychotherapy.
  • Educational psychotherapy.
  • Gestaltherapy.
  • Psychotherapy of the human body.
  • Group mixed psychotherapy.
  • Homogeneous psychotherapy.

Treatment of psychosomatic diseases is simply impossible without the patient’s desire. That is, it is impossible to forcibly cure a person from this kind of problem.

Today, the issue of hereditary predisposition to psychosomatic diseases is increasingly being raised. It is not yet possible to say for sure that such a predisposition exists, and statistics show that if parents are sick, then, as a rule, the psychosomatic disease is also observed in children. In practice, there have been cases when a mother more than once suffered from nervousness, loss of sleep, and even the initial stage of enuresis, but was successfully cured of a psychosomatic illness.

The child had psychosomatic sleep disorders literally in the first months of life. Based on such examples, it makes sense to raise the issue of genetic predisposition to psychosomatics. There are cases when a child is already born with some kind of psychosomatic disorder. These are particularly difficult cases in psychotherapy.

General characteristics

People call psychosomatic diseases those that arose on a nervous basis, that is, as a result of nervous breakdowns, systematic experiences, and stressful situations. We have already clarified the range of psychosomatic problems above. Despite the fact that these may be completely different physiological diseases, psychotherapists find a huge number of common characteristics. Let's look at them.

The onset of a psychosomatic illness is necessarily provoked by conflict, death, depression, nervousness, complex or any other nervous shock. Stress can contribute to both the development of the disease and its prosperity or development of more complex forms. Psychosomatic diseases have a direct connection with a person’s gender characteristics.

For example, boys are more likely to suffer from asthma in childhood, but in adult life The disease bronchial asthma is more common in women.

Hypertension is a disease of men, while women suffer from coronary disease. This does not mean that girls in childhood generally cannot develop asthma due to nervousness. It’s just that psychosomatic asthma is half as common among them.

Psychosomatic illnesses occur in phases. As a rule, they all have periods of exacerbation (spring, autumn). Psychosomatic illnesses do not appear out of nowhere. If a person does not have a genetic predisposition to asthma, then he cannot frolic under the most terrible stress.

The same stress can cause different psychosomatic diseases for different people. As a rule, psychosomatic diseases develop taking into account the character of a person. Aggressive, hot-tempered, restless people are prone to hypertension and heart disease. But modest and shy diseases of the stomach and intestines.

Getting rid of the reasons, including on your own

Getting rid of the causes of psychosomatic diseases is possible only with the help of a psychotherapist. Since the cause of the disease is stress, and it can manifest itself differently in everyone, therefore, the reaction of each person is individual. Only an experienced specialist can identify this cause and track the stages of development, and only by analyzing and clarifying the patient’s past problems.

In order to get rid of the cause of a psychosomatic illness, hypnosis helps in difficult cases, but here the opinion of experts is divided. Treating psychosomatic illnesses with hypnosis is not recommended, it is not effective and pointless, but trying to figure out the cause and get rid of it is possible. With the help of hypnosis, psychotherapists find out old forgotten grievances, fears, complexes, which are the basis of the stress that caused a psychosomatic illness. There are many other techniques with which the doctor works to find out the cause (imagery therapy).

You can often hear the question whether it is possible to treat and identify the causes of psychosomatic diseases on your own. Answer: no! People often try to save money in the hope that they will overcome their illness without the help of a psychotherapist. The result of self-medication is only the neglect of the disease. There is a misconception that if you think about your problem that caused a psychosomatic illness and talk about it to everyone, it will become easier and the illness will go away on its own. This is a completely wrong judgment. For the most part, this is not a technique, but self-pity. What patients should absolutely not do.

The human body is a very complex, well-oiled mechanism. All body functions are interconnected. All organs function smoothly only if they are healthy. If the disease overcomes one thing, then the chain certainly breaks. It goes without saying that the human psyche is also one of the “hexahedrons” that make up the whole mechanism.

It is simply necessary to worry about your nervous system, try in every possible way to deal with stress, use psychological techniques, talk about painful problems, solve problems, and not get stuck in them. Psychosomatic illnesses are very, very terrible illnesses, they are difficult to cure. The fight against psychosomatic illnesses is a complex, lengthy path and does not always give a sufficiently satisfactory result.

The term “psychosomatic diseases” is increasingly heard by ordinary people. What is psychosomatics, and most importantly - how and with which specialists to treat it, an Orthodox psychiatrist will tell you Vladimir Konstantinovich Nevyarovich.

What diseases are considered psychosomatic?

Psychosomatic diseases(from ancient Greek ψυχή - soul and σῶμα - body) are diseases, the occurrence of which is closely related to mental and psychological factors. The essence of these fairly common disorders lies, as the name itself suggests, in the close connection and interaction of soul and body. The term itself was proposed in 1818 by the Leipzig professor of psychology and doctor of mental illness (psychiatrist) Johann Christian August Heinroth (1773-1843). Heinroth is also called in dictionaries and reference books: a romantic, a moralist and a mystic. Heinroth believed that the source of many diseases was the pathology of the spirit and the depravity of the soul, on the basis of which he based his methods and models of treatment.

Only a century later, an independent “psychosomatic” direction in medicine was formed, the emergence of which was largely due to the emerging crisis of a purely materialistic view of all diseases in general, which had been dominant throughout last centuries on the wave of numerous scientific and technical achievements. Many representatives of various schools and directions, both in medicine and in psychology, philosophy, physiology and sociology, took part in the formation of “Psychosomatic Medicine”. Let's point out some of them: the German psychiatrist Karl Wiegand Maximillian Jacobi (1775-1858), who introduced the concept of “somatopsychic” in 1822; Berlin therapist Gustav Bergmann (1878-1955), who developed the doctrine of functional pathology; German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900); the world famous French psychiatrist Jean Martin Charcot (1825-1893), who studied with the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939); the founder of the doctrine of neurasthenia (1869), American neuropathologist George Miller Beard (1839-1883); his compatriot the physician Da Costa (1833-1900), after whom the “soldier’s excitable heart” syndrome (1871) is named; American psychoanalyst Franz Gabriel Alexander (1891-1964), who is considered one of the founders of modern psychosomatic medicine; German doctor Alexander Mitscherlich (1908 -1982), who opened a psychosomatic clinic in Heidelburg in 1949; Austrian physician and psychoanalyst, professor of psychosomatic medicine at the University of Washington Felix Deutsch (1884-1964); the founder of the “stress” theory, Canadian pathologist and endocrinologist, Nobel Prize winner Hans Selye (1907-1982) and many, many others. Psychoanalysts, as a rule, see the cause of psychosomatic diseases in the presence of unconscious conflicts in a person, carefully examine mental traumas forgotten by patients, focus on sexual problems, including children’s unconscious relationships with parents, etc. In the development of a psychosomatic illness, psychosomatic reactions, disorders, conditions, and sometimes affects are distinguished.

How do psychosomatic illnesses differ from ordinary illnesses?

Any disease has a connection with the psyche (soul). However, in the development of “psychosomatic diseases”, supporters of this theory see a more pronounced and even decisive importance of the psyche than other reasons. Hence, the treatment of a painful condition consists primarily of treating the mental factor or changing the way one responds to stress.

For example, a person complains of headaches or back pain. But the true cause of suffering in these cases, as it turns out after a comprehensive psychological study, is his personal problems related to work, which are projected onto the body, causing persistent pain that is difficult to relieve with conventional medical means.

The most common psychosomatic diseases include the so-called classic seven(Alexander, 1968):

  1. essential hypertension,
  2. bronchial asthma,
  3. peptic ulcer of the duodenum and stomach,
  4. nonspecific ulcerative colitis,
  5. neurodermatitis,
  6. rheumatoid arthritis;
  7. hyperthyroid syndrome.

However, supporters of psychosomatic medicine have significantly expanded this list in their assumptions, including coronary heart disease, tuberculosis, stroke, obesity, alcoholism, drug addiction and a number of other diseases. They also identified characteristic personality types: “coronary”, “ulcerative”, “arthritic”. The “Coronal” personality type, for example, is characterized by assertiveness, anxiety, desire for success, and aggressiveness. He is often haunted by a feeling of lack of time. He is prone to suppressing his internal experiences and emotions, which disrupts the physiological processes in the body.

Are psychosomatic diseases defined in the same way by different specialists?

No, there are many different views and discrepancies, both among representatives of the psychosomatic school and on the part of their colleagues who adhere to different concepts on the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases. For example, some psychosomaticians see the cause of bronchial asthma in the patient’s “unwillingness to breathe,” while others associate the pathology of this suffering with excessive assertiveness, which literally takes away the breath, leading to an attack of suffocation; Still others explain the attacks by egocentrism, attracting attention to oneself, and the desire to change the environment.

There are so many discrepancies that it is impossible within the confines of this article to even briefly list the main ones. Thus, psychosomaticians who graduated from doctors of psychoanalytic schools interpret the cause of almost all diseases, first of all, as a consequence of the repression of drives that disrupt the functions of organs; as a replacement of an existing problem with a somatic disorder.

Behavioral or body-oriented psychotherapists offer a different perspective on the problem. The view of diseases in the models of materialistic schools is completely different Soviet period, based on the physiological teachings of I.P. Pavlov.

Which specialists should you contact for the treatment of psychosomatic diseases?

Unlike foreign medicine, where there are official psychosomatic departments, faculties and clinics, in Russia there is no approved status of a psychosomatic doctor, so this problem is most often dealt with by psychiatrists, psychotherapists and partly psychologists. This is the official point of view, theory and practice. But there is also spiritual, spiritual and moral therapy, which has the right to exist and gives remarkable results in the treatment of many diseases (look at this in the series of books by the author of this article: “Therapy of the Soul”, “Healing with Words”, “Vice of the Soul”, “ Treatise on healing in Orthodox explanation", "Miraculous healings").

What role does the type of nervous system of the patient himself play in the formation of the disease?

According to the classical theory of Academician I.P. Pavlov, there are 4 types of nervous system: choleric (strong, uncontrollable), sanguine (strong, agile, balanced), phlegmatic (strong, inert), melancholic (weak, easily exhausted). The types described essentially correspond to temperament.

Persons with a weak type of nervous system are more susceptible negative impacts from outside. Therefore, under the same circumstances, some people quickly “break down”, are more likely to become exhausted and “burn out” than others. Immune defense also plays a role, its condition, ability to resist and maintain the internal balance (homeostasis) necessary for the body.

How long can treatment last and how effective is it?

It all depends on the nature of the disease, its severity, and timeliness of treatment (an advanced, chronic pathological process is always more difficult to treat). Treatment of some diseases that are based on spiritual (mental) ill health can be very lengthy.

The Holy Fathers mention the so-called “inconvenient” diseases, which have a special sacred meaning. The so-called genetic, hereditary factors cannot be discounted.

In each specific case, the approach to treatment should be purely individual, and, as taught in Soviet time, personal, clinical and pathogenetic. It must be said that the Russian medical school made a significant contribution precisely to the process of a deep, holistic attitude towards a sick person. Starting with Mudrov M.Ya. (1776 -1831), Zakharyin A.G. (1829 -1898), Botkin S.P. (1832-1889), Pirogov N.I. (1810-1881) - it was the multifactorial one that prevailed, therapy focused on the patient’s personality, the motto of which was: “Treat not the disease, but the person, in the fullness of his personality traits and conditions”
Let me dwell in more detail on some representatives Russian school healing diseases that could well be included among the outstanding psychosomatics (in the positive sense of the word). Among them is Professor of Therapy and Pathology at Moscow University Matvey Yakovlevich Mudrov, who professed a model of a holistic, multifaceted view of the disease, taking into account mental and spiritual, and not just biological and physiological mechanisms. He wrote, in particular: “Knowing the mutual actions of the soul and body, I consider it my duty to note that there are also spiritual medicines that heal the body. They are drawn from the science of wisdom; often from psychology. With this art you will console the sad, soften the angry, calm the impatient, stop the furious, frighten the daring, make the timid bold, the hidden - frank, the desperate trustworthy. This art imparts to the sick that firmness of spirit that overcomes bodily illnesses, melancholy, and tossing, and which then subjugates the illnesses themselves to the will of the patient. The patient’s admiration, joy and confidence are then more useful than the medicine itself.” Along with medicines, Mudrov prescribed to the sick who and at what time from the heavenly doctors and under what cases they should pray.

Among the causes of illnesses, he assigned an important place to mental factors: “spiritual disturbances: anger and malice, envy and ambition, luxury or stinginess, jealousy or despair and all sorts of everyday sorrows, which alternately pass through our gloomy life at night,” a person comes to various illnesses and sufferings . Another famous doctor of ours who treated the emperor Alexandra III and Leo Tolstoy, Professor Anton Grigorievich Zakharyin described “reflected” pain from certain internal organs to the skin, introducing an important milestone in the theory of the relationship between the internal and external in a person. In Soviet times, the famous doctor and psychologist Alexander Luria (1902-1977) wrote: « The brain cries, and the tears go to the heart, liver, stomach..."

What can the patient do? Are there any breathing exercises or physical therapy to cope with psychosomatic diseases?

And breathing exercises (paradoxical according to Strelnikova, or classical, as well as according to the yoga system) plus physical therapy can give real positive result in complex treatment with an individually selected set of systematic exercises, but they cannot be a panacea in the treatment of diseases, as, indeed, any other individual type of health procedures (hardening, therapeutic fasting, swimming, massage, autogenic training). Unfortunately, purely materialistically oriented schools do not consider such spiritual factors as sin, conscience, passions - categories that in the system of Orthodox medicine are among the most important, allowing one to study and understand the true spiritual meaning of suffering.

Letter from a reader of the ABC of Health:

I came to the conclusion that my problems with the gallbladder and stomach are pure psychosomatics. It's all about nerves. When you are calm, nothing hurts.

One experienced doctor gave me advice on what to do when you start to get nervous, how to cut off this signal from the stomach.

Exercise against the occurrence of psychosomatic diseases of the stomach and duodenum

Initial position: standing or sitting, arms down.

Simultaneously with a slow inhalation (about 8 seconds), we raise our arms straight up to the sides until they touch. The gaze rises along with the hands and rests on their connection.

Then we hold our breath for 3-4 seconds and, as we exhale, perform a reverse movement of the same duration.

We inhale and exhale in a stream, forming a tube with our lips.

We completely focus exclusively on breathing and movement.

We repeat three times. After the 2nd time, slight dizziness or drowsiness may occur.

How to relate to the interpretation of psychosomatic diseases given by the authors of esoteric books.

I treat esoteric literature like sweet intoxication. In search of truth, many, especially young people, wander into the fields of occultism and mysticism. Rarely do any of them recover with the help of these teachings, but many are damaged in their minds. In my opinion, some systems based on self-education and strict rules are also unsafe.

There are Orthodox-oriented teachings that have sound foundations with very controversial conclusions and recommendations that claim to be a comprehensive truth. I also remember all sorts of fashionable diets, types of fasting (according to Brag and Shelton). Not so long ago we were keen on healing according to the Seraphim (Chichagov) method as presented by Ksenia Kravchenko, the systems of Boris Vasilyevich Bolotov, Ivan Pavlovich Neumyvakin; It would also not hurt to remember the mass healing sessions of Anatoly Kashpirovsky and Alan Chumak, all kinds of urine therapy, sucking vegetable oil, consumption kombucha, apple cider vinegar, etc. Is it worth repeating that a universal system of healing does not exist in nature, and all esoteric books, from the position of our Russian Orthodox Church, are harmful to the human soul.

Can a properly tuned spiritual life help cope with psychosomatics?

Undoubtedly! The results can exceed all expectations. Sometimes one confessed sin destroys a whole chain of painful conditions.

There is nothing higher and better than the individual conscious path of improvement and education, the pursuit of holiness. As the Athonite elder Porfiry Kavsokalivit emphasizes, diseases, in particular mental ones, are cured, “if a person acquires the correct Orthodox consciousness”, instead of selfish. “When you turn to God, you no longer look for anything, you cease to be an unsatisfied person. On the contrary, you become happy with everything and everyone, you begin to love everyone, you are always happy ... "(Tsvetoslov of the Councils, Holy Mount Athos, 2014, p. 526). The following advice from the elder is also useful: “Try to reject unpleasant memories and fears. Remember the good things that happened in your life. Always look to the future with hope and optimism. Listen to good music... Walk in nature more often, go out of town... in addition to the Divine Liturgy on Sundays, go to evening services and all-night vigils. Pray, turning to Christ with confidence."(p. 524. Ibid.). Usually illnesses are treated as a great misfortune. But this is not entirely the right position. The Holy Fathers said that illness is a visit from God. And we cannot know for sure whether illness or health is more beneficial for us. Many people have accomplished great deeds and discoveries precisely, and sometimes thanks to illness. And speaking of psychosomatic illness, it is more useful, if possible, to begin treatment with therapy of the soul rather than the body.

From medical practice

One patient suffered from a disease with impaired support and movement functions. She moved independently with the help of a cane. Her husband repeatedly took her to the capital for consultations and treatment with eminent doctors. However, in the process of psychotherapeutic work, it was discovered the real reason a disease that lay in frequent infidelities on the part of her husband and the woman’s unconscious desire to keep him close to her. After numerous conversations and individual work the patient gradually got rid of the cane, and her movements were fully restored.

But there were other examples, with a sadder epilogue. Once they brought to me (or rather brought in a wheelchair) a patient who, over the course of several months, had developed an incomprehensible weakness in the lower extremities. Additional research methods did not reveal any pathology, as a result of which he was referred for consultation and treatment to a psychotherapist, who passionately convinced the patient that he was a healthy person, unconsciously simulating due to his reluctance to work. But in a conversation with that young man, it was possible to find out that the disease does not bring any benefit to the patient; on the contrary, it crosses out his much desired plans for the future. After a long conversation, I advised his relatives to show the patient to my friend, an old and very experienced neurosurgeon. A consultation took place, and the neurosurgeon clinically suspected the presence of a tumor in the spine. His diagnosis was soon confirmed by instrumental diagnostic methods. The patient was subsequently operated on in Germany, but, unfortunately, he could no longer walk. A month of sessions with a psychotherapist was irretrievably lost time and did not bring any benefit to the patient.

I would like to wish the readers God's blessing on all good and saving deeds; so that they are not embarrassed by any life circumstances, do not go into illness, but also do not neglect the help of doctors: first Heavenly, and then earthly! To study more the history and culture of our Fatherland, look for ways of holiness and learn to pray; they shunned vices and fought against swearing and sloppiness.

Psychiatrist V.K. Nevyarovich

A psychotherapist understands psychosomatics as diseases of internal organs and body systems that arise as a result of the influence of mental or emotional factors. As people say, these are diseases that appear “on nerves.” The most famous of them: bronchial asthma, gastric and duodenal ulcers, nonspecific ulcerative colitis, hypertension, migraine, diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis, rheumatoid arthritis, urticaria, neurodermatitis, psoriasis, many sexual disorders, as well as menstrual irregularities in women, climacteric syndrome, etc. Despite the fact that all these diseases are different, the psychologist finds in them whole line common signs.

1. The onset of the disease is provoked by mental factors (mental trauma, emotional stress, neurosis), the effect of which can be short-term (death of a loved one, depression), quite long-term (conflict in the family, at work, illness of a loved one) or chronic (presence of insoluble problems due to personal characteristics, inferiority complex, ugliness).
2. Not only the onset of the disease is associated with a stressful situation, but also any exacerbation or relapse of the disease.
3. The course of the disease depends to a certain extent on gender and stage of puberty. For example, bronchial asthma before puberty is 2 times more common in boys than in girls, while at a more mature age it is more common in women than in men. Chronic urticaria and thyrotoxicosis are more common in women, and coronary disease and arterial hypertension are more common in men.
4. Psychosomatic disorders usually occur in phases and their exacerbations to varying degrees are seasonal. Thus, seasonal autumn-spring exacerbations are characteristic of gastric and duodenal ulcers, and during the course of psoriasis, summer and winter forms are distinguished.
5. Psychosomatic diseases occur in persons with a genetic and constitutional predisposition. This fact is well known to practical doctors. In heredity, a person suffering from hypertension necessarily has “hypertensives”, and a person with peptic ulcer disease has “ulcers”. The same emotional stress causes different reactions and diseases in different people.
This difference is determined not only by genetic predisposition to
certain diseases, but also characterological characteristics. If
a person who is quick-tempered, excitable, prone to aggressive reactions and
forced to restrain them, blood pressure usually increases, then
a shy, impressionable person with an inferiority complex and ulcerative colitis.
Psychosomatic diseases are diseases of impaired adaptation (adaptation, protection) of the body. A person constantly exists under stress, because... it is not isolated from environmental influences. G. Selye argued that even “a sleeping person experiences stress... Complete freedom from stress means death.” However, the impact of an external factor can be so strong that the body’s defenses cannot cope with stress, and a painful condition occurs. The boundary between the adaptation reaction and the disease is conditional and depends both on the strength and duration of the influencing factor itself, and on the psychological and physical state of the person. Of course, the adaptive capabilities of a young, strong, physically healthy, optimistic person are much higher than those of an old, physically weak person who has been exposed to stressful influences more than once. It is the initial state that determines whether a person will actively seek a way out of a stressful situation or passively doom himself to be “destructed” by it.
The connection between the psyche and the body is carried out through the vegetative nervous system and manifests itself in the form of various vegetative-vascular reactions. A psychogenic situation as a provoking factor initially triggers a general nonspecific adaptation reaction. The most common three types of such reactions are: 1) reaction from the excretory organs - salivation, sweating, vomiting, frequent urination, diarrhea (“bear disease”). May occur when nervous before an exam, important report, etc.; 2) temperature reaction. Temperature rises frequently
observed in children in any stressful situation (teething,
severe crying, overwork). A temperature reaction is also typical for some women, and in a prolonged psychotraumatic situation a low-grade fever may persist (37.0-37.5°C); 3) reaction from the cardiovascular system in the form of heart spasms, increased blood pressure, and rapid heartbeat.
Any nonspecific reaction may be accompanied by anxiety or fear. With repeated exposure to psychogenic factors or in conditions of a long-term psychotraumatic situation, the response to stress acquires specificity in the form of damage to individual organs and systems of the body.
In other words, the target organ, which has a hereditary predisposition to this, is affected. On initial stage somatic disorders are functional and in some cases mask or obscure mental illnesses (neuroses, depression). In the future, the disease becomes persistent or even irreversible, which makes its treatment difficult.

The peculiarities of the development of psychosomatic diseases also dictate the uniqueness of therapeutic intervention. First of all, it is necessary to stop the immediate somato-vegetative reaction of the body (increase in blood pressure, pain in
heart, perforation of ulcer). Then you need to add psychotropic drugs
drugs (tranquilizers, antidepressants, sleeping pills, nootropics) that indirectly stabilize physical functions. In addition, the entire process of treating damaged organs and systems must be accompanied by a course of psychotherapy aimed at correcting the patient’s personality traits, his reaction to the environment, resolving a traumatic situation, resolving family relationships, etc. Only the entire treatment complex can promote recovery. To implement this complex, psychological assistance from a psychiatrist, psychotherapist or neuropsychiatrist is required.

What to do with psychosomatics?

This article is for those who have already begun to understand that the roots of all problems are in the head, as well as for those who have already noticed the close connection between the psyche and the body. Surely you have noticed more than once that as soon as an old painful problem pops up, there is an echo of it in the body in the form of an exacerbation of a chronic disease, a rise in temperature, an exacerbation of allergies, etc. This is one of the signs that the disease is psychosomatic.

What are psychosomatic diseases

The name “psychosomatic diseases” speaks for itself; these are diseases whose causes lie in the psyche. However, this does not mean that these are some kind of fake, far-fetched and not real diseases at all. They are very real, only the causes of these diseases are not only in the entry of the virus into the body, not in the lack or excess of some hormone, but much deeper. What is the reason, for example, that the hormone stopped being produced in the required quantities? Isn’t it just that the body is tired of performing its prescribed functions without failure? No.

Our body just adapts to our mood, our thoughts. Since most people do not even track or realize their thoughts and emotions, our body acts as a very convenient means of feedback, showing that in this part of it, under the influence negative emotions, something is not working right. Our body begins to signal pain and discomfort even in extreme cases, when our emotions remain unheard for a long time, and mental pain continues to grow. And for this he should rather say thank you than be offended and complain that it is letting us down and not allowing us to live in peace.

Manifestations of psychosomatics

Let's consider the relationship between the body and the psyche in one of the diseases - asthma. To put it in simple words, during an exacerbation, under the influence of allergens, an attack occurs and the person cannot breathe fully because he cannot exhale. What is the body trying to tell a person so harshly? The fact that a person does not want to live a full life, does not want to “breathe deeply”, does not want or believes that he does not have the right to breathe and live independently (especially in the case of constant use of an inhaler), that a person takes a lot, and gives with great difficulty (difficulty in exhaling). Plus, the presence of the allergen itself, which triggers an asthma attack, indicates that a person cannot stand something, protests against some events or actions, but cannot or does not allow himself to express this protest due to upbringing, stereotypes, fear opinions of others. And it was the constant ignoring of all these psychological factors that became the cause of the disease, and these same factors are the reason for its transition to the chronic stage. And this is how you can analyze each disease.

Psychosomatics - body protest

But we are primarily interested in what can be done about it, After all, it’s not so easy to finally give yourself the will to express a protest against what a person cannot stand (in the case of asthma), rather than habitually reaching for an inhaler. We are not given the root reasons why these automatisms arose, and until we eliminate them, we will not be able to react differently. Moreover, in the explanation of psychosomatic diseases, multifactoriality is recognized - a set of causes that interact with each other, that is, several sources of one disease can become sources at once. psychological problems, as well as its occurrence can be influenced by a large number of related, at first glance even unrelated, problems. The reasons, as we said above, are ourselves, the features of our personality that were formed as a result of upbringing, as well as features of character and temperament, precisely what a person at first glance is proud of because it is precisely these features that make him different from what he is. All.

Roots of psychosomatics

The past plays a huge role in the formation of personality, and you can read about working with it and the negative consequences of not doing this work in this article. Here we only want to say that in order to get rid of any personality trait or character, you will need to work through all the episodes of the past, postulates and beliefs that formed this trait, and there are thousands of them. But, in fact, we have not yet met people who would like to solve only one single problem in life or be cured of one single disease. Sooner or later, the question arises of a total elaboration of all one’s fears, convictions, sexual complexes, resentments, illusions, psychological traumas, all episodes of the past and fantasies about the future. Yes, it’s a colossal amount of work, but it’s worth it. It is precisely this kind of total work that the “Baybak” system is aimed at, the goal of which is to bring a person to the balance of soul and body, emotions and behavior.

So, if you really understand that health and garbage in your head in the form of complexes, fears and resentments are simply not compatible, and you understand that you cannot leave it like this, it is impossible to live with it any longer, then the Baybak system may be useful to you. To get acquainted with the system, just download it from the link at the bottom of the page, but you should decide whether to work with the system or not only after reading it.
