When coming to Europe in the summer, you should definitely visit music festivals and listen to the music of the most famous bands and performers. We talked about the 12 most interesting ones, but in 2016 European countries will host more than 50 music events.

Ahmad Tea Music Festival

PJ Harvey, The Maccabees, Django Django

The Tea Festival traditionally brings a small but interesting list of British musicians, and sells tickets at low prices, even for regular concerts. The big import here is PJ Harvey. The first MBE of the 1990s alt-rock star recently released his first album in five years, The Hope Six Demolition Project, which lived up to expectations even though they were as high as ever.

Cost: 1000 rubles. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

Maxidrom

Rammstein, Editors, IAMX, Crazy Town, Agatha Christie

The Maximum radio festival, which had not been held for the last three years, surprisingly returned in the midst of the crisis and even boasts large-scale imports. There will be a lot of dark rock music, which is so loved in Russia. But if everything is clear with the crazy metal bands Rammstein (there will be a lot of thrash and pyrotechnics), then the Editors group will be able to surprise this year. The departure of guitarist Chris Urbanovich greatly influenced their sound, and the latest album “In Dream” is no longer the usual post-rock, but synth-pop, stylish and very interesting.

Cost: from 3,500 rubles. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

"Wild Mint"

5’Nizza, “Spleen”, IOWA, Alai Oli, “Accident”, Fedor Chistyakov, Jukebox Trio, Mgzavrebi, Bricks, Neuromonk Feofan.

The festival, which began as ethno, is now a good showcase of soulful, but still pop music. It’s worth going to see the reunited group 5’Nizza, hear new material from the groups IOWA and Alai Oli, and at the same time take a break from exhaust fumes and other joys of city life.

Cost: ticket for three days - 3,000 rubles, with a place for a tent - 4,000 rubles. Organized transfer Moscow – Wild Mint – Moscow – 1000 rubles. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

Open'er

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence + The Machine, LCD Soundsystem, Pharrell Williams, Grimes, Sigur Ros, Tame Impala, The Last Shadow Puppets, PJ Harvey, M83, Foals, Kygo, Mac Demarco.

An ideal line-up, looking at which you want to run for a ticket right now, which, in fact, was done by several thousand people, who ensured a complete sold-out for the festival. However, where ours did not disappear, tickets are now being actively resold both with and without markups, for example. It's worth going primarily for Tame Impala, an Australian band that forever wrote itself into music history with its latest album Currents. It also makes sense to listen to Arctic Monkeys lead singer Alex Turner's second band, The Last Shadow Puppets, which is different from his main project, more elegant and less poppy. And at the same time, a band famous for its crazy performances, Foals, who released the brilliant album What Went Down this year.

Cost: Ticket for four days - 90 euros, with camping accommodation - 100. A train to Kaliningrad will cost 1,700 rubles, from there by bus to Gdynia for 600-700 rubles.

« Stereoleto"

Crystal Castles, Sigur Rós, 5Nizza, On-The-Go, Garden City Movement, Mana Island, Antokha MC, Sirotkin, “Knife for Frau Müller”.

The only St. Petersburg festival to which people travel en masse from the capital, because there are always interesting foreign imports here. This year it is the updated line-up of the electropunk duo Crystal Castles and the piercing Icelandic post-rock from Sigur Rós. Plus, an impressive list of domestic indie performers: from the reunited Knife for Frau Müller to the amazing debutant Sirotkin.

Price: admission ticket for two days – 4,000 rubles.

Bosco Fresh Fest

Kwabs, Honne, GusGus, Mumiy Troll, Ivan Dorn, On-The-Go, Pompeya, Tesla boy, Azalea Banks, Brainstorm.

A solid Moscow festival, which this year did without high-profile foreign imports (sorry, Azalea!), but brought together the entire color of Russian music from the masters Mumiy Troll to the young and fashionable Vougal, Manizha and Medzhikul. Something interesting: at the night part of the festival, the brilliant Danish electronic musicians WhoMadeWho will perform their DJ set.

Cost: 2-day subscription 3,000 rubles. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

"Martin"

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, FKA Twigs, Icona Pop, Hurts

A debut festival that started with an unexpected and enviable line-up: winners of four Grammy awards American rappers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, British singer FKA twigs, Swedish electropop duo Icona Pop. The event is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Luzhniki and subsequently plans to become an annual event. An alternative dance floor will be set up in the existing swimming pool, and additional recreation areas will be organized on board several ships.

Cost: 3,000 rubles. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

Park Live Festival

Lana Del Rey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Kills, Two Door Cinema Club, "Spleen", John Newman.

The most powerful (but also the most expensive) music festival of the year in Russia. They are bringing the winner of seven Grammy awards and one of the best live bands of our time, the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Anthony Kiedis was recently hospitalized due to stomach flu, and the group had to cancel two concerts, but we really hope that by July he will be completely healthy) . No less interesting are the world's main baroque-pop diva Lana Del Rey and the sultry rock duo The Kills.

Cost: 9,000 rubles for a two-day ticket. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

Positive Festival

Grimes, Iggy Pop, M83, Ellie Goulding, Mark Ronson, John Newman, Hot Chip, Years & Years

This year the Latvian festival has assembled the most brilliant team of headliners in the entire decade of its existence. Last year's queen, Grimes, topped every other top record of 2015 with her album Art Angels. The great Iggy Pop, who recorded the delightful album Post Pop Depression with the leader of Queens of the Stone Age. Electronic guys M83 with their first Junk record in five years. Pop star Ellie Goulding, author of the soundtrack to the film “50 Shades of Gray” (the number of views on You Tube for the video for her song Love Me Like You Do has exceeded one billion one hundred million). One of the most influential musicians and sound producers in the world, Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse’s best album “Back to Black” is his work), the guru of British electronics Hot Chip – if you still haven’t run to buy tickets, there’s something wrong with you .

Cost: 90 euros for a three-day ticket, 98 euros for a three-day ticket with the possibility of camping, 168 euros for a three-day ticket and tent rental, 420 euros for a ticket and accommodation in a wooden house. You can get to Riga from St. Petersburg by bus for 1,500 – 2,000 rubles, from there a ticket to Salacgriva will cost another 200 rubles.

Alfa Future People

Armin van Buuren, Axwell & Ingrosso, Dimitry Vegas & Like Mike, Martin Garrix, Infected Mushroom

The main festival of music and technology in Russia: in addition to the line-up of the best electronic musicians in the world, it is famous for its stunning scenery, as well as an exhibition of the latest technological achievements from hand-held robots to interactive attractions.

Cost: 5,000 rubles for all days. 4,000 rubles for setting up one tent at a campsite (that is, it is more profitable for four people to travel with one large tent). A ticket for a reserved seat carriage to Nizhny Novgorod starts from 2,200 rubles, and free buses will run from there.

Usadba Jazz

Nino Katamadze & Insight, Assai Jazz Band, Maceo Parker, Horsepower, Varvara Vizbor

This year “Usadba” will be held in St. Petersburg for the fifth time. The most important addition this year is definitely Maceo Parker, the legendary saxophonist who played with James Brown, Ray Charles and Prince. He can be heard on early Red Hot Chili Peppers recordings and has been releasing solo albums since the 1990s. Traditionally, Nino Katamadze will perform at the festival - an amazing Georgian singer, during whose performance absolutely everyone in the audience smiles, and this is not a metaphor. She will present her new album “Yellow”. The third reason to visit the Butter Meadow is the rapper Assai, former member Krec group. Last year he rebuilt his instrumental ensemble, with whom he is now actively recording new material.

Cost: 1300 rubles for entry to all sites

Picnic "Afisha"

Chemical Brothers, "Leningrad", Benjamin Clementine, Omar Suleiman, Adrian Young, Mujus, Sean Lee

Picnic, which was once the main domestic festival, is now losing its position somewhat, but there is still a point in going: firstly, for the sake of the rave kings Chemical Brothers, and secondly, for the sake of the new Cinderella Benjamin Clementine - a guy with powerful vocals, who recently sang in subways and tiny bars, and last year won the Mercury Prize as the best performer of the year. Well, you already know our feelings towards the Leningrad group. This year, the team is paying a lot of attention to landscaping the territory and infrastructure - many objects of landscape architecture and design, installations, recreation areas and interactive entertainment will be prepared in collaboration with contemporary artists, designers and architects. As always, there will be a lot of entertainment venues, traditional food courts with the best Moscow restaurants, sports sections, a market with carefully selected local producers of everything in the world, dozens of foreign and Russian performers.

Cost: 4,000 rubles. A ticket for the Sapsan to Moscow costs on average 2,500 rubles one way.

Flow Festival

Massive Attack, Iggy Pop, Sia, New Order, The Last Shadow Puppets, Jamie xx, M83, The Kills, Anohni.

The festival, which is customary for all of St. Petersburg to attend, this year confidently holds its position: rest assured, here you will meet both your neighbor and former classmate. It's worth the trip to hear last year's triumphant Jamie xx, Massive Attack with their first release in six years, Ritual Spirit EP, and Anthony Hegarty with her solo project Anohni. The singer with a cosmic voice released new record in early May, and has already received a bouquet of top marks from music critics. But even if you haven't followed her discography, you've probably seen the poignant video in which Naomi Campbell played the role of an Afghan girl. There is another interesting bonus: Elijah Wood will perform his DJ set.

Cost: 175 euros for three days. 600-1000 rubles for a bus to Helsinki.

By the way, it is at Sonar that the famous multi-instrumentalist Jean Michel Jarre, famous this year, will present his new program, and Laurent Garnier and Four Tet will play a 7-hour set at the festival new stage SonarCa. Another advantage of Sonar is that it is held in one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Barcelona. Glastonbury

Headliners: unknown yet

The legendary British festival, which is held near ancient city Glastonbury. Tickets for Glasto are selling out at lightning speed, long before the headliners are announced. Festival on the shores of a fjord in northern Denmark, the largest in Northern Europe. At one time, for example, Bob Marley, Metallica, U2 and others performed here. Dramatic events also happened - in 2000, 9 people died in a stampede at a Pearl Jam concert. Headliners: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence & The Machine, Sigur Rós, LCD Soundsystem, M83, Tame Impala, Foals, Bastille, The 1975, Grimes, Caribou, PJ Harvey, Beirut, CHVRCHES

Polish Open’er is distinguished by consistently high requirements for the composition of performers. 2016 was no exception in this regard: RHCP, LCD Soundsystem, PJ Harvey, Sigur Rós and even our favorite Canadian Grimes will perform at the festival. The music at Open’er is definitely worth going to. On the other hand, the proximity of the Baltic Sea often harms the cloudless festival sky - the weather at Open’er is unpredictable, and daily temperature changes can be very large.

The Slovak festival Pohoda, formerly known as Bazant Pohoda, but returned to its original name after the departure of beer sponsor Zlaty Bazant, is a worthy alternative to the Polish Open’er and the Hungarian Sziget. It's simple, the lineup of performers is at the same level, but a higher level of comfort and low price. A three-day day ticket to the festival costs just €89.

Price: for 3 days only 89 euros.

Way Out West

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden

Headliners: Massive Attack, Young Fathers, PJ Harvey, Jamie XX, Sia, The Last Shadow Puppets, CHVRCHES, M83

The Way Out West festival in Gothenburg, Sweden will be of interest primarily to fans of Bristol's Massive Attack, because... During their European tour at the beginning of 2016, there was an almost universal sold out, and the Swedish festival is one of the additional opportunities to hear the group’s new program. By the way, you can report on the MA concert in Copenhagen WOW - a relatively young and typically urban festival - be prepared that you won’t be able to live in a camp there. But at this festival there are practically no overlaps and situations where you have to sacrifice one musician to attend the concert of another. The festival has only three stages, which are located quite close. And while one performer is setting up, another is performing on stage. This year's line-up is currently in the process of being formed. Already announced are such diverse acts as PJ Harvey, Jamiex XX and Sia, who could act as a magnet for many summer festival-goers.

Price: SEK 2,240 ($269) per pass

Sziget

The Hungarian Sziget is dearly loved by us, as well as by many of our compatriots. This cult festival with a special atmosphere and unique visitors. You won't find such bright and positive freaks anywhere else. And you are unlikely to find such a variety of stages and performers at any other festival. The fact is that Sziget lasts 8 days. And this is really a week-long immersion in a festival break on a green island on the Danube in beautiful Budapest. Due to the other benefits of the festival, many visitors note that the music program in Sighet is not the main thing. At the same time, as a rule, there is no shortage of music either.

Rock en Seine

Location: Paris, France

Headliners: unknown

A French festival held in the suburbs of Paris in the park of the town of Saint-Cloud. Among other things, it is famous for the fact that it became known about the dissolution of Oasis - the group was announced at the festival in 2009, but never performed. The organizers promise the first announcements of this year on March 21. Rock en Seine is a great way to combine a trip to Paris with a summer music festival.

Location: Berlin, Germany

Headliners: Radiohead, Kings of Leon, New Order, Major Lazer, The 1975, James Blake, Years & Years, Martin Solveig, Odesza, Dubioza Kolektiv. The organizers promise new announcements in the near future.

The famous Lollapalooza, which takes place annually in Chicago, also travels through the franchise Latin America, and has recently taken root in the German capital, even managing to receive an award for the best new festival. It is held in the format of a city fest: last year in the old airport building, this year in Treptower Park in East Berlin. One of the few festivals with Radiohead that has not yet sold out, Lollapalooza is a great reason to close the season!

Price: two-day pass costs 139 euros, one-day ticket costs 79 euros

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “music festival”? If you see cheeky young people in your mind's eye, little known bands and the indigestible sound of the equipment, then you should know that this has not been the case for a long time. Today's festivals boast a high level of organization, adequate visitors and top bands. The best part is that professionals work not only abroad - festival culture is slowly but surely making its way into Russian realities.

What do organizers offer visitors today? Firstly, in one or several days you can visit a large number of groups, and the ticket price will be significantly lower in comparison with the prices separately for each group. Secondly, various recreation and entertainment areas are arranged on the festival grounds, which is a big plus for visitors with children or for large groups. And thirdly, often such events can offer different levels of comfort for any budget: from living as a “savage” in your tent to comfortable houses. And, of course, a lot of positive emotions!

The beginning of the year is a good time to plan future trips and visits. And if you don’t know where exactly you should go, then our selection of festivals taking place in Russia will help you with your choice!

Please note that the festivals are arranged in strict chronological order and the best things await you at the end of the article!
