Autumn has arrived, which means that warm and cozy knitted items will take up residence in our wardrobe for many months. I often notice that people call almost all types of outer knitted and knitted clothing a jacket or sweater. Therefore, in my buyer's encyclopedia, I decided to write about what types of knitted and knitted tops are distinguished, and what is the difference between a cardigan, sweater, pullover, jumper and sweatshirt. Some of these things have been done long haul to end up in our wardrobe, some were immediately loved by fashionistas. I think the topic of fashion history is quite interesting and I hope that this article will help you expand your horizons and introduce a couple of new words into your everyday life. So, let's go!

What is a sweater

A sweater is a knitted item of clothing without fasteners with high collar.

The history of the sweater is very interesting! It appeared in the mid-19th century in Northern Europe, where people saved themselves from the cold in any way they could. Later, the sweater spread throughout Europe and was used only as weight loss clothing. Doctors advised doing exercises in a woolen sweater in order to sweat more and, accordingly, burn fat faster. Hence its name - from English to sweat - “to sweat”. Then sailors fell in love with the sweater, as it was very warm, and thanks to the high collar that fits tightly around the neck, it can be worn without a scarf. In the early 20th century, the sweater was used as sportswear for winter sports. In the 30s, Coco Chanel introduced a sweater model for women and thereby introduced the sweater into the world of high fashion. But the trend did not immediately catch on; women were not yet ready to wear it. However, Coco was always ahead of her time. But after the beauty Marilyn Monroe began wearing it, and girls in tight sweaters began to appear in Playboy magazine, it became very popular. It's interesting that in English language even an independent designation for a new type of girl appeared - “sweater girl,” i.e., a full-breasted girl in a tight sweater.
As you can see, the sweater has come a long way to end up in our wardrobe.

A cardigan is a knitted garment with a full-length button closure.

Did you know that the cardigan was named after a person? Its inventor is considered to be the seventh Earl of Cardigan, a British general. The cardigan served to insulate the uniform during Crimean War and looked like a wool vest. After the end of the war, the count became very famous, and with him, so did his invention. Later this name extended to the long-sleeved version. IN women's fashion the cardigan was, of course, introduced by Coco Chanel (who else was such an innovator?). She didn't like how the tight-fitting sweater ruined her hair every time she wore it. And she just borrowed a cardigan from men's wardrobes, who, thanks to buttons, kept his hair in order. I love twists in history like this! And you?

It was created for US Air Force pilots during World War II. In the 70s, this comfortable jacket made of durable and unpretentious material was loved by skinheads and ravers, and from them it passed into the wardrobe of football hooligans. And now she has settled in the closets of urban fashionistas who wear her with dresses and heels. Could an American pilot imagine this 80 years ago?

Of all the above items, I personally prefer jumpers and sweatshirts. They look minimalist, without unnecessary details, clean, elegant and go with almost everything. I don't really like availability additional details– pockets, hoods or buttons. They weigh down the image, making it overloaded. Although, a good cardigan will never be out of place in your wardrobe, as it can be thrown over a dress, a T-shirt paired with jeans, or a top paired with smart trousers.

The word jumper too English origin, derived from the noun jumper - “jumper”. Nowadays, jumpers and pullovers are worn by literally everyone, regardless of age, gender and occupation.

By the way, until about the mid-20s of the 20th century, wearing a pullover was considered the prerogative of the exclusively strong half of humanity. The growth of popularity of this item among women was facilitated by the legendary Coco Chanel, who loved to introduce purely masculine elements of clothing into women's fashion. It was thanks to her that the pullover acquired elegant and flirty notes. As a result, this item of clothing has become especially popular among the wealthy public of the most expensive resorts. A wide variety of materials are used to sew modern jumpers and pullovers, including cotton, wool, acrylic, viscose, and polyester. Whatever these items of clothing are made from, they are ideal for absolutely any season, which makes them even more popular.

There are so many clothing models for the cool season that it’s not difficult to get lost in all these names. Also, from time to time, new styles are added to the already known sweaters and jumpers, for example, a sweatshirt or hoodie. Therefore, we will understand what a sweater, pullover jumper, etc. is, in order to understand what we generally wear and how to correctly call this thing.

A sweater is considered the warmest knitted jacket with a high collar, which acts as a scarf and provides additional warmth. Actually, the main difference between the sweater and other knitted models is the high collar. But the presence of patterns, the length of the sleeves or the product itself do not play a role, since this is already a design move.

A similar sweater model, but without a neck, with a round neckline at the neck. Jumpers can be very warm, like sweaters, but factory ones most often come in a lightweight version and look thinner.

Love the pullover more for men than thanks to women V-neck neck. It, like a jumper, is a lighter model, so it is convenient to wear shirts under it.

If the jumper or pullover turns out to be very thin, it’s time to think about the cardigan. The model of this sweater can be knitted or knitted, if we talk about the cool season. There are cardigans, but their difference from sweaters and other knitted items is that they are not worn over the throat, but like a jacket.

A cardigan can have a belt or buttons, so it's like a warm, loose-fitting version of a jacket.

A sweatshirt is an insulated sports jacket with or without a zipper, with wide elastic band at the bottom and on the sleeves. The models are made from very thick knitwear. The presence of pockets, a high collar or a hood can be chosen to suit your taste. Sweatshirts have a very loose fit and usually look like a size or two too big on your figure.

The sweatshirt without a zipper got its name due to its through pocket on the stomach, where you can hide both hands. Kangaroos are most often found with a hood and wide elastic at the bottom and on the sleeves.

A hoodie is a long version of a sweatshirt, and sometimes an elongated kangaroo. It all depends on the pockets and zippers. If the hoodie has pockets on the sides, as well as a model with a zipper, then this is a relative of the sweatshirt, and one through pocket is clearly a relative of the kangaroo.

The length of the hoodie at least covers the hips; most often models come with a hood or high collar.

This is almost the same sweatshirt, but closer to casual style, therefore often used in everyday looks. Sweatshirts are made without a zipper and must have wide elastic at the bottom of the product and on the sleeves. The neckline is rounded, the length of the product is up to the hips. Sweatshirts also feature the most interesting prints.

The lightest but most comfortable thing for the cool season is a knitted turtleneck. It can be up to the hips or a little lower, with long sleeves or without and, of course, with a high collar. It is worn under sweaters, cardigans, jackets or sleeveless vests.

I would like to believe that there are no questions left about what a sweater, jumper, pullover, etc. is. But, if you did not find answers to questions about others in the text winter things, ask in the comments.
