After reading the manga, I was very intrigued to learn about the film adaptation of this rather strange project. Cheerful and unusual story, in the spirit of Barakamon, made me laugh out loud a year ago. But I was still surprised to learn about the film adaptation, because this story did not quite fit into the TV format. To most viewers, it might seem simply boring, and the local humor somehow crazy. The unique atmosphere that filled the original would be difficult to convey in an anime adaptation. As a result, the series risked becoming a 13-episode commercial for various sweets, pickles, beach packs and other things that can be bought for 25 yen. But this anime came out in its entirety. And I must admit, I finished watching it with great pleasure.
I'll tell you for those who don't know. Dagashi Kashi is a funny, cheerful story about the Japanese outback, in which there lives one guy named Kokonotsu (Or just Coconut), who, against the wishes of his father, does not want to inherit the family business, namely a cheap sweets store, instead dreaming of becoming a mangaka . But fate brings into his life an extraordinary girl, who is also the heiress of a huge company producing various delicacies. Her name is Shidare Hotaru. And she is determined to take Kakonotsu’s father into her company, and for this she needs the younger one to agree to inherit the store.
The whole anime revolves around our heroes discussing various delicacies and, at the same time, the authors show us what’s going on in Hotaru’s head. Namely, the associations and fantasies that accompany the eating of any product. For her, sweets are a whole world in which she has lived since childhood. I am very glad that the anime authors were able to convey to the viewer the world of her eccentric fantasies just as cheerfully and vividly. After all, it is on this that most of the humor in the series is built. What's also funny is that Hotoru is a kind of comedic yandere whose object of adoration is not the main character, as is usually the case, but the treats she can't live without. She is, of course, not ready to kill for food (although there was a precedent in one episode where she developed stomatitis), but with fiery ardor she will defend the dignity of this or that treat.
In addition to Hotaru and Kokonotsu, there are 3 more heroes in the anime. The father of a guy who, like Hotaru, is a very eccentric person. Saya is a childhood friend and employee of a coffee shop, not far from Kokanotsu’s house, who, of course, is in love with him. And To, Sai's brother and Kokanotsu's best, and in other matters, only friend. All these characters are very colorful, and form an ideal comedic ensemble in which the action unfolds. But the main characters of this anime are not people, but as Hotaru says at the beginning - Sweets. And it is precisely this message that I think will alienate many.
Hotaru's long tirades about the merits, features and uniqueness of each sweet, and not only sweets. But chips, noodles, and pickled radishes can also get boring. To the average viewer, the anime will seem dull. But if you get into its atmosphere, you will get a lot of pleasure. The absurdity and unusualness of local humor often reminded me of Azumanga and Pani Pony Dash. The village atmosphere, like in Non Non Byeri or Barakamon, is diluted with fierce explosions of psychedelic fantasies, jokes about hillbillies, the complexity of inter-gender communication and other things, so this anime will make you laugh in places as much as Gintama.
It's nice to see that in our time someone is not chasing the trend, but is doing something unusual, and in its own way very cool. Dagashi Kashi won't appeal to most. But I'm sure it will find its audience. If you like Azumanga and Lucky Star, you'll like Dagashi Kashi. For the rest, I would advise you to refrain from watching, as most likely you won’t like it.
