Old punk rock bands. The main punk rock bands in the world

Andrianov Andrey. Optimism (Waiting for Fernando), cardboard/acrylic 50 cm x 40 cm, 2012

Lives in Russia wonderful artist Andrey Yurievich Andrianov. Who writes unusual soulful pictures. Including about food.

You can look at them for a long time, unexpectedly finding new connections between objects and characters, and rejoicing at this sudden insight. Especially if you didn’t think to read the title at first...))

And, sometimes, you can just admire the beauty and transparency of the water in glass vessel. Or shiny skin (which you just want to grab and eat). Or the dazzling brightness of white and yellow fried eggs on a smoky, rusty frying pan with dented edges, standing on an old Primus stove! Tasty, tangible, it feels like you are inside the painting, standing right there, next to the artist. With a fork. Or, with your hand trembling with impatience, you reach for that sausage. And next to it is a neat knife for your little hand.

Still lifes with delicious food

Have fun. How to buy paintings - see at the end.

March 8

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. March 8. MDF/acrylic, 60 cm x 50 cm, 2011

I wonder if this is a breakfast for your beloved (in honor of March 8th) or for yourself in anticipation of your beloved? Or should she get sausage from circles, and for herself scrambled eggs and bread?)))

Ischnitsa and sausage

In a time of severe trials, Russia cannot be understood mentally

This picture of a traditional Russian bountiful table could decorate any Soviet cookbook or other book about tasty and healthy food. And many generations of the family where such a cookbook is kept would return many times to the page with this illustration, remembering it for the rest of their lives as a standard for a home holiday table.

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. In times of severe trials, Russia cannot be understood with the mind. Primed paper/acrylic, 60 cm x 76 cm, 2015.

With what love the food is depicted here! The sharp-nosed sterlet, sliced with lemon, froze in some kind of gloomy bow (or in an attempt to swim away? Do you see the open fins-wings?) in front of the ruddy, wary little snout. Caviar: black - on a small saucer, and red - in a large wooden tub.

In a squat enamel pot - hot, which has just been seasoned with sour cream. With a generous hand. Ladle. This borscht can feed 15 people! Next to it is sour cream (or cream?) in a jar, it’s so rich it’s worth a spoonful!

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich, “Provencal”, canvas/acrylic 50 cm x 60 cm 2012

Outside the window of the hut there is winter, frost (after all, this is the only way it should be in the present New Year!) The hostess is cutting the salad. And the owner, who has already opened a can of peas with a can opener (he tried so hard, he crushed it!) and a can of cucumbers, is watching the order with the shot glass and the cigarette. And in that three-liter jar there is a cocktail straw - everything for you, dear! And, for sure, the hostess gives him the salad trimmings. Which remain not because it is an edge or an uneven piece of sausage or egg (and you cannot put it in a salad). I think she deliberately chooses pieces for him that seem to be trimmings. Because I want to please my loved one and feed him.

(judging by the image of the sausage in the pictures with Olivier and scrambled eggs, the owner respects the Doctor's in a natural casing).

For everyone who hasn't eaten fish soup this summer yet

And here is a cheerful, delicious summer picture about a fishing holiday with fish soup.

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. For everyone who hasn't eaten fish soup this summer. Canvas/acrylic, 40 cm x 50 cm, 2013

The soup pot is full of fish. It came out rich, the fisherman on the left has fat dripping from the spoon onto the bread. They say that real fish soup is cooked with the addition of vodka. There's a stack here. And the large shapes of the eaters seem to enhance the deliciousness and attractiveness of this fish soup. People with such hands (and other parts of the body) will probably eat only the most nourishing, high-quality and tasty things. And they won’t let you die of hunger! The lady pouring the soup into bowls tries to be very attractive even in nature - those scarlet nails in flip-flops, her protruding finger and cleavage! And next to them are large, cheerful, solid, short men. Idyll.

What do you think of redfin fish flying over the river? Maybe these are the souls of those in the hot broth?

Catering (memories of the work canteen)

Here's another borsch - now in a large saucepan with an iron ladle, which stands on a shabby stool in the work canteen.

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. Catering (memories of the work canteen). Paper/acrylic, 60 cm x 50 cm, 2012

Delicious, hot, with a head of garlic (where would we be without it... Remember how garlic was squeezed into a plate or rubbed on dried bread?).

Memories of Soviet public catering continue in the picture with dumplings on the table in the dumpling shop on Herzen Street.

No one was embarrassed by the price in the dumpling shop on Herzen Street

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. No one was embarrassed by the price in the dumpling shop on Herzen Street. Paper/acrylic, 50 cm x 50 cm, 2012

Lots and lots of dumplings (18 pieces?) on a plate with mustard. The nineteenth dumpling is already on the fork and an invisible hand is carrying it into the eater’s mouth! And he, hungry and cold, is so intoxicated by the heat of the dumpling shop, the smells of food, the steam from a hot plate, that the catering windows slide open before his eyes. There is only a plate and a hot dumpling, which he will now eat!

Optimism (Waiting for Fernando)

But the owner is waiting for guests.

Andrianov Andrey. Optimism (Waiting for Fernando), cardboard/acrylic, 50 cm x 40 cm, 2012.

Everything is clean and tidy at home. On the table are the best dishes with wonderful food: herring and boiled potatoes, sprinkled with dill and onion rings. Slices of bread stand in a plate evenly and solemnly. Nearby is a bottle of something hot and strong that will be so pleasant to drink with this excellent snack. There is pepper and salt in traditional ceramic salt shakers. The guest was even given a fork and knife, which apparently emphasizes the degree of respect the hosts have for him. And the owner himself is in a suit and white shirt. Smart. But eating, apparently, will be done with your hands)) No wonder the plates are on large pink napkins. They will come in handy.

Rechflot

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. River fleet. Primed cardboard/acrylic, 40 cm x 50 cm, 2012.

This tureen floats like a ship on a white napkin with a blue border against the backdrop of flying seagulls (apparently seagulls are not interested in pasta). But I would eat it. Appetizing.

Judith near Moscow

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. Judith near Moscow. Canvas/acrylic, 50 cm x 40 cm, 2013

I don’t know whether this Judith is a cook or a meat cutter, but she’s so charming and fighting! "TO beautiful in appearance and very attractive in appearance.” Her Holofernes is just not curly, with an earring in his ear)) but he is also happy with his fate.

Knight of the Sad Countenance. Self-portrait

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. Knight of the Sad Countenance. Self-portrait. Cardboard/acrylic, 50 cm x 40 cm, 2012

A full pan of potatoes, a bowl of clean water where the peeled tubers will be placed. Everything is strong, beautiful, clean. Who put this order in the kitchen?

Ancient recipe

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. Ancient recipe, canvas/acrylic, 50 cm x 40 cm, 2013.

Looking at this cook in an old apron, I remember soviet postcards With Dutch painting. The heroine seemed to combine two heroines of Jan Wermmer: the Cook and the Girl Reading a Letter from open window. Tender, with beautiful face, luxurious hair. And he knows how to cook (judging by the already closed jam).

And here's the thing old recipe? How to prepare dumplings? Or some kind of mince and garlic pie?

Battle of G'Arnir

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. Battle of G'Arnir, canvas/acrylic 50cm x 70cm 2012

Something very tasty, soaked in chicken juices, is sewn into these swordsmen fighting with a bow. And the side dish is good - potatoes with onion rings and, probably, stewed beans (or mushrooms?).

Satsivi for Fernando

Andrianov Andrey Yurievich. Satsivi for Fernando. Canvas/acrylic, 50 cm x 60 cm, 2012

This is not a picture, this is a whole recipe. Big raw chicken, which will soon (as soon as it is cooked) be topped with nut sauce and garlic. It will turn out to be satsivi. For dear Colombian guest Fernando (I don’t know if this is a real person or fictional character. But for him, obviously, all the best. However, like the fruits given to the artist by him, they are the most ripe, juicy and aromatic).

Other still lifes with fruit

Notice how in some paintings objects extend beyond their edges (the painting shows a painting standing on a stretcher, and fruit or a knife extend beyond its borders).

Some still lifes feature bitten apples or pears, and from the title of some works one can guess what is happening in the life of the artist or the characters about whom he paints. Fruits and other objects in Andrei Andrianov’s still lifes are not just inanimate nature, but heroes, characters paintings, with their own history, games and intrigues.

The undeniable advantages of socialism

Back in 1978, left-wing radical punk anarchists Crass from the English county of Essex uncompromisingly and unequivocally declared in the song “ Punk Is Dead"that punk is supposedly dead and, worse than that, sold out, exchanged the revolution for currency. Nevertheless, just three years later, the charismatic frontman of the Scottish punk band The Exploited, Watty Buchan, proclaimed his slogan in response to them, which became much more popular and replicated in mass consciousness: « Punk's Not Dead ».

One way or another, the debate over whether punk is alive has not subsided since its inception on the streets of London and New York in the 1970s. In this material, we decided, if not to answer this question, then at least to understand how modern European punk rock lives - we tried to be very diverse, so we did not focus on one specific manifestation of punk, but put together a vinaigrette: from dance and rhythmic to atonal and aggressive. The formal reason for this was today's Moscow concert of the young Danish punk band Iceage, whose second album “You"re Nothing” received even more rave reviews from critics than the excellent debut album “New Brigade”.

Terrible Feelings

The quartet Terrible Feelings, led by charming vocalist Manuela Ivansson, was formed in the Swedish city of Malmo in 2010. A year later, they released their first mini-album, Blank Heads. Musical style bands range from garage punk to something like heavy rock 'n' roll. Judging by their latest EP “Backwoods”, released in August of this year, the band’s sound is gradually becoming more pure - they’ve probably grown up. But nevertheless, the essence remains the same: Terrible Feelings is a very cheerful, slightly teenage naive and cheerful punk.

English hardcore punk band Gallows were formed in 2005 in Watford. A year later, they released their first album, Orchestra of Wolves, which was highly praised by reviewers from Kerrang!, NME and other music publications. In 2011, frontman Frank Carter left the band due to “creative differences” and formed with American guitarist Jim Carroll new group Pure Love. Despite this, Gallows released their self-titled third album in 2012 with new vocalist Wade McNeil.

We Are the Physics

Scots We Are the Physics gathered in Glasgow in 2005 and three years later released their debut album Are OK At Music. The guys themselves describe their style as “mutant sci-punk rock” and say that they are famous for their eccentric shows and B-movie aesthetics. As for musical influences, among them are the cult art-punks Devo, the Japanese Polysics with their “screaming pogo-punk” and even the most famous bespectacled rock and roll man, Buddy Holly. Mixing all this, we get fashionable dance punk with elements of math rock - this, of course, is not what their compatriots from The Exploited had in mind, but formally it is still punk rock.

The quartet Rue D'la Soif from Rennes, France, includes a very unusual instrument for punk rock - the accordion. Something similar would probably have happened if the famous accordionist Yvette Orner had decided to record with the patriarchs British punk The Clash. The group was formed in 2004, in 2008 they released their debut album “Quoi Qu'on En Dise...”, and literally any day now their second album “L'Ardoise” should appear - not so hurricane and cheerful, but much more lyrical, judging by the first singles.

Danish power trio The Movement was founded in Copenhagen in 2002. They play mod-rock with elements of punk and ska, inspired by the work of The Jam, The Who and The Clash, as well as (beware!) Karl Marx and Rosa Luxemburg. The influence of the British mod subculture is also noticeable in the design of the group's records, which currently include three full-length albums. It’s best to start getting to know the band with their debut album “Move!”, replete with solid ska-punk militants with lyrics about the fight against a hypocritical society, wasted youth, but not lost ideals.

Garage punks The Heartburns came together in the Finnish city of Turku in 2001, and in 2003 they released their first record. After a series of singles, splits and concert tours, the group broke up, only to be revived in Helsinki in 2006 with a new lineup, with only two members of the original, and finally record their debut album “Fucked Up in a Bad Way” with ten songs full of anger , hopelessness and alcohol intoxication. Having released another album in 2008, the band exists to this day, regularly holding concerts and re-releasing their limited legacy on vinyl.

Lendakaris Muertos

Spanish comedy-punk band Lendakaris Muertos was formed in Pamplona in 2004, and their self-titled debut album was released a year later. The guys play “fast orthodox punk” (as they themselves write) with ironic lyrics that ridicule many social and political problems, including the confrontation between Spain and the so-called Basque Country, making unequivocal jokes regarding both sides of the conflict.

Punk rock is a surprisingly resilient thing. Having emerged from the garage rock of the 60s, he has successfully survived to this day. Well, maybe not entirely happily, but the very fact that the genre still exists is amazing. I will definitely make a separate selection about garage rock, but today we will take a look at the forerunner of punks. Let's start with one of my favorite bands. "MS 5". They started playing in the mid-60s. Naturally, someday I will write a little more about them. They are in the title photo.

And the guys below are “The Velvet Underground" They started playing the same way in the mid-60s, but to be honest, it has always been a big mystery to me why they are considered the prototype of punk rock. If I agree with MS 5, then I don’t agree with these guys. Strange? Yes! Interesting? Definitely. But punk rock in my opinion is something else.

2

Look how cute the young man is in the picture. This is Iggy Pop from 1969. Just the time of recording one of the main songs of punk rock. It was in that year that the album will be released, where it will be “I wanna be your dog" I already know more about Iggy. However, someday I’ll get some beautiful photos of him. Luckily there are plenty of them online. In general, of course, photography in the West was put on a serious stream even half a century ago. It doesn’t matter whether the group took off or not, but it’s very easy to search for pictures on the Internet.

3

« New York Dolls"Another American group considered one of the founders of the genre. Although they also raise doubts in me in this regard. It's more like glam rock. They started playing in 1971, and this whole wave just followed. By the way, I’m thinking about making a post in the “import outsiders” series about them.

4

Also in the early 70s in the USA there were other outsiders who did not fit in anywhere. "Destroy all Monsters"started playing in 1973. Of course, whether this is punk rock is debatable, but the fact that for its time it was an unexpected group is definitely an indisputable fact. By the way, have you noticed that I am talking exclusively about the USA?

5

Well, we finally got to those who definitely won’t cause controversy. "Ramones" We started playing in 1974. In general, by that time, its own scene had formed in the USA, where ordinary hooligans and amateurs occupied the stage.

6

At the same time, the stage was occupied mainly in the club "CBGB" From its walls came such a group as “Television».

7

In a team "Television“The figure of Richard Hell undoubtedly deserves attention. Having left the group even before the release of the first album, he joined the team "The Heartbreakers" Where, in addition to him, Johnny Sanders also ended up from those who collapsed by 1975 “New York Dolls" Here they are just getting ready to go on stage.

8

Well A Later He foundedRichard Hell and the Voidoids."With whom I recorded a kind of anthem of that generation “Blank Generation».

9

By the way, it’s interesting to look at photographs from that time. It is clearly seen that initially the punk image was without pins and mohawks. On the picture "The Heartbreakers».

10

After the breakup "The Heartbreakers» Johnny Sanders played with Sid Vicious for a while. But this did not bring much fruit. Sid left this world too quickly.

11

Well, Sanders himself, having become addicted to heroin back in the 70s, did not live very long. He died in 1991. In general, he is also a figure suitable for the “outsiders” category.

12

« Dead boys"Another group from that first wave of American punks. Year of formation - 1976. Disbanded in 1979.

13

Things are completely different for Dame Patti Smith. We already talked about her somehow. Unlike most of the groups that broke out at that time, she is still recording albums.

14

« Blondie"Oddly enough, they also left the club"CBGB" It's debatable whether they played punk rock at the beginning of their careers, but posting a photo of the beautiful Debbie is a nice thing to do.

15

Since we’re talking about women, it wouldn’t hurt to remember the group “The Cramps" They started playing in 1973.

16

Well, let's move across the ocean to old England. It is London that many people associate with the punk movement, but as we see chronologically, New York is more likely to evoke similar associations. The key to understanding is called Malcolm McLaren. He was a manager atNew York Dolls", visited the club "CBGB"and, having seen enough new fashion, decided to make money on this business in his native London. Which, in general, he succeeded in. It was his protégé "Sex Pistols"and eventually became the flagship of the punk movement.

17

At the same time, you need to understand that in addition to the legends of punk rock, there was a whole stream of groups in England at that time. So in the same 1975, in parallel with “Sex Pistols"gathered and "The Damned" Photo from the concert in "CBGB"1977. Interesting era was. The young group easily goes on tour across the ocean. By the way, albums are still being made to this day.

18

« Buzzcocks"Another English guys gathered to play in 1976. By the way, they are considered the founders of culture “DIY" V music industry. They are still playing too.

19

About "Siouxsie and the Banshees“You and I, too, once upon a time.

20

Just like we talked about “The Adverts" The girl there is too beautiful. Actually, at the link above there are several more groups where ladies were involved.

21

Here I will mark such guys as “The Vibrators" Also since 1976 in my grandfather.

22

And, of course, "The Clash" Another influential guys.

23

“Noteworthy”UK Subs" They are truly considered to be part of the second wave of English punk rock.

24

Also included in the second wave are “Sham69". However, these guys have more to do with “Oi"stage. By the end of the 70s, punk rock began to mutate once again.

25

From those same times, it is worth remembering “Crass».

26

And of course about “The Toy Dolls" These are definitely the second wave of punk rock. Formed in 1979.

27

Meanwhile, overseas the guys weren’t dozing either. So in 1977, “The Misfits».

28

And at the same time the group began to work “Plasmatics».

29

In 1979, guys from one of the most significant groups second wave of punk rock. "The Exploited" In general, by the early 80s they formed the canonical appearance of punks. It was they who came up with the idea of wearing Iroquois. But it's not just about the Iroquois. The sound of punk rock became faster and heavier.

30

Around the same time, the guys from “G. B. H." Another canonical guys in terms of appearance.

31

Actually, here the history of punk rock took a turn towards hard core. It's interesting that in the US the look on the hardcore scene was not the same as in England. Mohawks were not worn here. For example, here is the group “Black Flag" who stood at the origins of the American hardcore movement.

32

And here comes "Dead Kennedys».

33

It is interesting that now such music was not filled with heroin and alcohol. A healthy lifestyle has come into fashion. Concerts «Minor Threat“generally took place where the sale of alcohol was prohibited.

34

« SSD"Another gang from the hard core wave of the 80s.

35

Refers to the hard core and "Bad Brains" By the way, the guys started playing back in the late 70s, unlike previous groups that emerged in the 80s.

36

I will also mention “Bad Religion" Also quite a significant group.

37

Worthy of interest and "Agnostic Front».

38

Actually, hardcore was widespread not only in the USA. Except "The Exploited" And "G. B. H." in England they hunted "Discharge».

39

Among the British there were also “Chaos UK" Here, by the way, you can also see that the appearance was more consistent with punk than that of colleagues from the USA.

40

Well, I’ll also note for balance “Disorder"from the English.

41

It's funny that "Beasty Boys“We started at one time with punk rock. Here they are in the photo with Billy Idol.

42

But it’s much more interesting that in the mid-80s, in parallel with hard core, pop punk also emerged. "NOFX" are some of the oldest representatives of this genre. They have been playing since 1983.

43

At the same time, in the mid-80s, the group “The Offspring».

44

Well "Green Day"They've also been playing since the 80s.

45

I will also note “Rancid“, however, these guys started their careers only in 1991. But clearly they and the guys listed above were the main locomotive of punk rock in the 90s.

46

Later, in general, there were countless representatives of this trend, such as “Blink182".

47

However, not only commercially successful music was played in the USA. In 1990 there appeared "The Casualties" Here by appearance It’s clear what the guys were aiming for.

48

Well, I’ll finish the review with the group “Slaves" This couple has only been playing since 2012, but they are wonderful.

49

It is clear that dozens more groups were left behind. Moreover, I only considered the American and English scenes. But there were groups in Germany, and Japan, and many other places. But, nevertheless, I still highlighted the most significant ones, in my opinion. That's all. Thank you for your attention and I hope for sensible additions. I'm sure there are a number of bands I haven't heard of.

Punk rock(English) Punk rock) is a genre of rock music that emerged in the mid-1970s in the USA and, a little later, in the UK. Punk rock combined social protest and musical rejection of the then forms of rock: the deliberately primitive playing and fervor of early rock and roll were cultivated.

The meaning that early punk rock bands put into their genre was the desire to play, which prevailed over the ability to play; This definition created a diverse early American punk scene, ranging from the primitive and lightweight Ramones to the complex and experimental Television. This approach allowed punk rock to become the basis of a number of subcultures - punk, DIY, fanzine culture, and later - straight edge. In 1976-1977, punk rock began to emerge in Great Britain, in a more scandalous and politicized form; thanks to this, by 1977 the genre became one of the most noticeable phenomena in UK rock music.

Over time, punk rock gave birth to

Many varieties. The largest of them are more melodic and lightweight pop-punk, aggressive hardcore and Oi!, as well as combinations with other genres - ska-punk and which has become a separate major genre post-punk.

Name
The word punk in English language has many meanings, but before the advent of punk rock it was mostly used as a swear word. Among the meanings, depending on the context, could be “prostitute”, “homosexual” or simply “scum”, in all cases this is an emotional obscene expression.

The first mention of the word "punk" in connection with rock music dates back to 1970, when the Chicago Tribune, in a review of an album by avant-garde garage band The Fugs, described their music as "punk rock, redneck sentiment." Lester Bangs, one of the supposed inventors of the term "heavy metal", used the word in articles about Iggy Pop. But for the first time, critics Dave Marsh and Lenny Kaye began to use the combination “punk rock” as a term, and not an epithet, in the 1970s.

In 1976, the fanzine Punk, created by Legs McNeil, appeared. The magazine was dedicated to American punk rock and new wave, clearly combining them into a direction. It was this magazine that gave the genre its final name.

Characteristic
Punk rock compositions are generally characterized by a fast tempo, sometimes a short duration, simple accompaniment, and a cheeky and often aggressive style of singing. The lyrics of punk rock bands tend to be nihilistic, sometimes focusing on social issues. Often punk rock bands have shocking image: for example, the New York Dolls dressed in bright colors on stage women's clothing, The Adicts imitated the main characters of the film " A Clockwork Orange"; later such details of the punk image appear as torn clothes(Richard Hell), pins (Sex Pistols), mohawk hairstyles (The Exploited).

Story
1970s
The musical roots of punk rock can be traced by critics back to the late 1950s; Mostly at that time, primitive and hard music was played by garage rock bands. Key representatives of early proto-punk music are The Sonics, Monks, The Seeds, The Who (album “My Generation”), The Kinks (song “You Really Got Me”). A whole series of records from the late 1960s and early 1970s were already, in one sense or another, close to what would later be called punk rock; Currently, these records are conventionally called proto-punk. These include the first albums of The Velvet Underground, The Stooges (and Iggy Pop), MC5, New York Dolls, Patti Smith (Horses album), The Dictators (Go Girl Crazy!) album, David Bowie.

The early punk scene formed primarily in New York City around a few clubs; The scene had its origins in the late 1960s, Andy Warhol's Factory, and the Detroit garage scene, centered on CBGB. The first real punk band is considered to be the New York Ramones; their extremely simplified music, accelerated so much that 30 songs fit into half-hour concerts, as well as their “street” image, predetermined all the fundamental principles of the genre. In the UK, The Damned and Sex Pistols followed in the footsteps of the American punk scene. The example of these groups was followed a large number of young teams. While punk was an underground sensation in the US, it became a full-blown social phenomenon in the UK, where it was seen as a real threat to the well-being of the establishment. A bunch of British bands blindly copied the Sex Pistols, but many found their own original sound (Buzzcocks, The Clash, artistic experiments of the groups Wire and Joy Division).

1980-1990s
By the early 1980s, there was a slight decline in the development of punk. The wave of popularity of the first groups faded away. However, at this time experiments began to give the punk sound more brutality; bands like Black Flag and Circle Jerks spawned a major subgenre of hardcore, Sham 69 and Cockney Rejects - oi!, Crass - anarcho-punk. Experiments began to combine punk with metal (The Exploited, Discharge, D.R.I.), ska (Social Drinking, Operation Ivy). For the most part, punk bands of the 80s did not attract wide public attention, being in the underground. However, at the same time, genres developed alternative rock, noise rock, post-punk; The key groups of these movements (Sonic Youth, Pixies, Big Black, Hüsker Dü) maintained a strong punk influence while developing new musical ideas.

By the end of the 80s - beginning of the 90s, thanks to Bad groups Religion and NOFX gained pop-punk popularity; this type of punk rock was significantly different from the pop punk of the 70s (Buzzcocks) and achieved major popularity. The Offspring, Green Day, Rancid became the basis of 90s pop-punk; however, it is generally accepted that the genre began to degenerate with the emergence of unoriginal bands like Blink 182.

Musical style punk rock arose in the very early 1970s. The USA is considered the birthplace of punk. In England this genre gained popularity a little later. The word Punk in English initially had a sharply negative connotation. In slang, this is what girls of easy virtue were called. In America, this designation was used to brand prisoners of the lower caste of the criminal world. Having entered the everyday lexicon, the term acquired the meaning of “dirty”, “rotten”, “garbage garbage”.

The era of "garage rock"

At the very end of the 50s, a large number of amateur musical groups and groups emerged. This phenomenon was very simple basis. The popularity of the great Beatles forced young performers to take up musical instruments.

“Garage rock” is also commonly called “proto-punk,” because it became the basis for the future mass movement. It received the name “garage” because the beginning groups rehearsed in ordinary garages using primitive equipment. The music was distinguished by its compositional simplicity, roughness, rigidity and extreme carelessness during performance. There was practically no concept of. The main thing was the desire, not the ability to play. The performers created for themselves and a narrow circle of acquaintances and friends. This is how the first prerequisites for the punk party began to take shape.

The Sonics

The first signs of punk rock

American New York became the center of punk rock in the late 60s. The Ramones are deservedly considered the first real punks in this style. Their music was very simple and had a high tempo. Songs could be no more than 30 seconds long, based on the vocalist shouting just a few phrases under the deafening noise of the instruments.

British punk rock bands of the period were represented by The Damned and the Sex Pistols. It was the latter who laid the foundation for behavior on stage, professing aggression and a cheeky manner of behavior. An interesting phenomenon was that in the USA punk rock remained largely underground, but in the UK it became a widespread youth movement.

Sex Pistols

English punk rock music grew into a global protest, speaking out against a wealthy existence, shaking the canons and respectable foundations. A significant social burden demonstrated by the punk rock style was the political background and dissatisfaction with the rules and orders. The lyrics featured social messages and statements.

A huge number of young bands copied the Sex Pistols, finding in this process a completely new coloring and sound. The main ideology remained the idea “ lost generation”, which protests against everyone and everything. The music remained loud, brutal, harsh and simple.

Style development: second wave

Punk rock of the 1980s, after exploding wildly, slowly began to fall out of favor. Many famous teams broke up, and the most talented participants groups began to look for themselves in others musical directions. But the calm was temporary. The search for a fresh sound led to the emergence of Black Flag and Circle Jerks. This is how the derivative hardcore genre began to gain momentum. There was also a mixture of punk rock and heavy metal. The result can be appreciated in the work of the group The Exploited. Aggression and protest continued steadily. Most bands, however, could only be content with a deep underground and a narrow circle of fans.

The Exploited

A new impetus to punk music was given by the growing post-punk and alternative rock movement in musical circles. Prominent representatives became the Pixies and Sonic Youth.

In the 90s, the most significant can be considered mega popular groups The Offspring and Green Day. The sound of these world-class bands has become more melodic; amateur musicians have been replaced by real professionals in their field. The energy and high tempo of punk rock, the accessibility and simplicity of compositions for the listener were inherited by the bands from the first wave of punks. The main additions can be considered professionalism of performance, high-quality sound of instruments and vocals. The ideas of protest and aggression gave way to unbridled musical fun and complete abandon, receiving the definition of “California punk rock.” The softest branch today can be considered pop-punk.

Punk rock in Russia

Like any other popular world movement, punk rock has been widely represented in the Russian Federation for quite a long time. The story begins in 1979. They presented Russian punk rock groups of the first wave: “Automatic Satisfactory”, “People’s Militia”, “Diogenes” and many others. The Siberian group “ civil defense" A group called the Gas Sector enjoyed wide popularity among Russian punks.
