Factory production felt hats– this is a rather long and complex process, consisting of a large number of technological stages. First, to achieve maximum homogeneity, all hairs of different origins are mixed with each other, then foreign inclusions and hard guard hairs are removed from this mass. The result is a fur mass that is soft to the touch, which is much thinner and more delicate than the finest sheep wool. The raw material prepared in this way is pressed between heavy plates. When pressed, wool fibers twist and interlock. To achieve complete high-quality felting, the wool is placed in containers with diluted sulfuric acid, where it is further compacted using heavy mallets. Then the material is rinsed with the addition of tetrachloroethylene. As a result of a long multi-stage process, hats of specified models are formed on blanks.

The most serious disadvantage of this type of production of felt hats is its harmfulness and danger to the working personnel. Firstly, it is noisy and dusty (however, in this regard, it is not much different from working conditions in other factories and factories). Secondly, hats are made using complex production machines and machines with a large number of rotating parts, each of which must be protected to avoid accidents. Thirdly, to process wool and turn it into felt material, it is used a large number of harmful chemical substances– sulfuric acid, quinone and others, therefore the production workshop must be equipped with a powerful exhaust hood, and people working in it must wear personal protective equipment. Fourthly, under such conditions (flammable materials, elevated temperatures and fire), there is a high probability of fire. And finally, there is a danger (even if not very high) of contracting an infectious disease from contact with untreated animal fur (primarily wild animals).
