IN early XIX centuries in small towns and villages in Germany you could meet two young people asking about something local residents. What were they looking for?

Reader.

Two gentlemen in frock coats,
With hats and vests...
Not often seen in villages
So dressed up like that.
What path brought them here -
And, apparently, not short, -
On the square of German villages,
To fairs and gatherings?
And what good is it for them to be on the road?
Among the forgotten people?
They want to find an estate
For lack of it?
Or they decided to dig a treasure,
Buried under a mountain?
So why don't they have shovels?
And shovels with you?

Leading.

The treasure that these two gentlemen wanted to find, rummaging through ancient manuscripts and asking people in all corners of the country, was not hidden in the ground. The name for this treasure is folk tales. Fairy tales with fairies and giants, witty simpletons, princes and princesses and, of course, kings.

Over the course of 10 years, the Brothers Grimm collected more than two hundred fairy tales. And in 1812 they decided to print them. These books were called "Children's and Family Tales." And they really became children's and family. After all, you can hardly find a family where these fairy tales are not read to their children.

King Thrush, the king from the Golden Mountain, the king from the fairy tale "White Snake", the king from the fairy tale "Good Trade" - that's how many of them settled in fairy tales collected by the German learned brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm. Authors of “German Grammar”, “Dictionary” German language”, other books, the brothers saw many rulers not only in fairy tales, but also in life.

Reader.

How many fairy tales are there on earth -
Different, different!
How many different kings -
They are not alike either.
This one is a coward, and that one is a fool,
And this one sleeps on the throne;
One king is always a king,
The other is when wearing a crown.
The king has plenty of land
And there will be more tomorrow...
Yes, only in fairy tales are kings
More pleasant than in reality!

Leading.

For a long time, the brothers were the personal librarians of the Hessian Elector Wilhelm II, who did not read books at all. The position of the brothers was somewhat ambiguous: scientists already known throughout Europe, writers whose tales stood on bookshelves in almost every German house, they remained servants of the Elector. They understood well that they were not living in a fairy tale, so they did not ask the Elector for anything for themselves. And only one day did their joint resignation letter land on his desk. The monarch released the brothers, saying that they had done absolutely nothing for him.

And the brothers went to work in Gottingen, at the university, where they had been invited for a long time. But in 1837, a scandal broke out at the university; the instigators of the trouble were venerable professors and among them the Brothers Grimm. They signed a petition of protest sent to Ernst August, the new king of Hanover, a small state with its capital in Göttingen. The king abolished the constitution and made his power unlimited. Scientists were against it. In response, the king forbade the professors who signed the petition teaching activities, and expelled the instigators from Hanover. Among them was Jacob Grimm.

In the frosty winter he was taken away from Göttingen by carriage. The chest contained books written by the brothers, collections of ancient laws, German sagas and, of course, fairy tales.

In Russia, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm were learned in mid-19th centuries and immediately fell in love with them. The books were published in huge editions, and later films, cartoons, and performances were staged based on them.

Here's how it happens: the Brothers Grimm wrote a lot scientific works, but it was not they who glorified the scientists, but three collections of carefully collected German folk tales. And although Wilhelm and Jacob did not compose fairy tales themselves, but only processed what was written down, as a sign of special gratitude, the folk tales preserved by them began to be called “Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm” everywhere.
