The “English elastic” pattern is the same on both the back and front sides. Used for knitting scarves, hats, leggings, sweaters and berets. Can be successfully combined with different knits on one product. Although the pattern is simple to perform even for novice needlewomen, there are several rules and tips that should be followed - you will learn about them in the article. In addition, we will teach you how to knit an English rib with knitting needles, accompanying each step with pictures.

English elastic is a double-sided knit with a catch. Before applying a pattern to a product, always knit a sample, as the density of the fabric is visually deceptive. Typing a large number of loops, you risk getting a huge sweater or vice versa, thanks to the loose knitting with good stretch. To make the pattern look complete, cast on the number of loops divided by 3. For the sample we take 15 loops. English elastic does not require knitting edge loops, so before the first loop we yarn over the thread onto a working knitting needle, and remove the loop itself without knitting. So, on the right knitting needle there is a yarn over and a loop thrown over.

Next we knit two stitches together “front” behind the front wall. Now we yarn over the thread onto a working knitting needle and remove the loop without knitting. We knit two knit stitches again. We repeat the same steps until the end of the row.

We turn the work over and proceed to the second row. First, we also yarn over and remove the first loop without knitting. Now we knit together the “loop + yarn over” pair. Again we cast the thread onto the knitting needle, remove the loop and knit the “loop + yarn over” together. We repeat these steps until the end of the row and turn the fabric over. We knit the third and subsequent rows in the same way.

To beautifully finish the upper edge of the English elastic, knit the first loop purlwise, and the “loop + yarn over” pair – behind the front walls of the “front”. And pull the resulting loop through the loop on the right knitting needle. We knit the next loop “purl” and pull the previous one through it. Thus we close the entire row.

Tips for the “English elastic” pattern:
  1. The needle should be thicker than the yarn. The wider the knitting needle and thread, the larger and more openwork the knitting.
  2. English elastic is absolutely not suitable for finishing edges (neck, cuffs), as it stretches too much.
  3. Dry the product, which is knitted with an English elastic band, by laying it on a horizontal surface. Otherwise you will get a shapeless thing.
  4. The “English elastic” pattern is insidious and can highlight figure imperfections due to its corrugated structure. Be careful!
  5. Always knit a swatch with the threads intended for the project.
  6. Dial odd number loops
  7. Knit the front loops only behind the front wall, otherwise the pattern will be ruined.
  8. English elastic requires more thread consumption than for knitting regular elastic. So buy a couple of spare balls.

Now every craftswoman will add another pattern to her knitter portfolio - English rib. To better understand how to work with slip stitches in this knitting, watch the video attached below. Knit with pleasure!

English elastic band is very soft, fluffy and ideal for any product. You can create a chic sweater with it, fashionable scarf and an original hat for the cold season.

If we talk about knitting, English rib is not a difficult pattern for those who follow all the instructions.

English rib knitting pattern

This pattern has become very popular, so today there are various options, interpretations and ways to knit it. I suggest moving from the simplest to more complex options.

Simple English rubber band (the easiest method with description)

So, the “English rib” pattern with knitting needles (knitting pattern).

Cast on an odd number of stitches and knit according to the following pattern:

1st row - knit in the sequence: k1. loop, straight yarn over, remove the next loop without knitting, while the working thread should be at the back of the work. Then we repeat in the same sequence until the end of the row.

2nd row - knit in the sequence: straight yarn over, remove the next loop without knitting (the working thread is behind the work), knit the loop and yarn over of the previous row together with a knit stitch. Then we repeat everything until the end of the row.

3rd row - knit in the sequence: knit the loop and yarn over of the previous row together, make a straight yarn over, remove the next loop without knitting. Repeat the pattern until the end of the row.

Simplified false or fake gum

To facilitate the process, the craftsmen came up with an imitation of this pattern, which will not visually differ from the original, but the knitting technology is significantly simplified.

You will like this sample.

Volumetric two-color

Using two colors creates an amazing combination that is suitable for bright and cheerful products. Two colors that harmonize well will help give the image originality and uniqueness.

The principle of knitting a two-color English rib is that the same row is knitted 2 times: once with a dark thread, and the other time with a light thread.

Purl loops should be knitted like purl classic stitches. The number of loops must be odd.

1st row: knit with dark thread - * 1 knit, 1 yarn over, remove 1 loop without knitting *, 1 knit

2nd row: knit with a light thread - * 1 yarn over, slip 1 loop without knitting, knit 1 loop together with the yarn over with a knit loop *, 1 yarn over, slip 1 loop without knitting

Row 3: knit with dark thread - Attention! We move the knitting to the opposite end of the knitting needle * 1 loop together with the yarn over is knitted with a purl loop, 1 yarn over, 1 loop is removed without knitting *, 1 loop together with the yarn over is knitted with a purl loop

4th row: knit with a light thread - * 1 yarn over, slip 1 loop without knitting, knit 1 loop together with the yarn over with a purl loop *, 1 yarn over, slip 1 loop without knitting

Row 5: knit with dark thread - Attention! We move the knitting to the opposite end of the knitting needle * knit 1 loop together with the yarn over, 1 yarn over, remove 1 loop *, knit 1 loop together with the yarn over. Rows 2-5 are repeated.

Double elastic - detailed knitting technology from scratch

For a 2×2 elastic band, take the number of loops divisible by 4 plus two edge loops:

  • 1 row. Knit as for a regular elastic band, knit two in sequence, purl two. The last two stitches of the row are knitted with knit stitches.
  • 2nd row. We repeat: we make a yarn over, the next two loops are transferred to the right knitting needle without knitting, two knit stitches. At the end of the row, yarn over and remove the last two loops unknitted.
  • 3rd row. We knit the yarn over and loop of the previous row together, knit 1, yarn over, and leave two loops unknitted. At the end of the row we knit the penultimate loop with a knit yarn over and the last one also with a knit yarn over.
  • 4 row. We knit according to rapport: yarn over, two unknitted loops, the next loop is knitted together with the knit yarn over, then knit again. The row ends with one yarn over and two unknitted loops.

According to the same principle, starting from the third row, further knitting continues until the required size of the fabric is obtained.

How to subtract, add and close

Decrease

In order not to disturb the sequence of loops of the patent pattern for decreases, knit three loops together. For decreases on the right, knit 3 loops (= k1, p1, k1): slip the 1st as in knit, knit the 2nd and 3rd together and pull the first loop through it. For decreases on the left: knit three stitches together.

Addition

Cast on loops, knit 5 rows, in the 6th row add 1 loop on each side. Then in the 12th row, 18th, etc.

Closing

If the product needs to be finished, the loops must be closed correctly. So, you need to finish the English gum in the following way:

Knit the product to the last row. The peculiarity of the English elastic band is that some of the loops are first removed unknitted with a yarn over, and on the next row they are knitted together with the same yarn over. That is, the first row is knitted like a regular 1x1 rib, in the second row the knit stitch is knitted, and the purl stitch is dropped with a crochet on the right knitting needle.

In the next row, the knit stitch is knitted together with the knit yarn over, and the purl row is removed with the yarn over. As a result, before the last row on the knitting needles it turns out to be about 1/3 more loops than the required size. If you close them in the usual way, loop to loop, then the last row will be longer than all the others by the same third. If you knit the last row with a regular elastic band without making yarn overs, it will be thinner than the rest. Therefore, it is better to close them with a double thread.

Versatile puffy scarf

It doesn’t matter who you are knitting this item for, a boy or a girl, it is important to put in love, then your item will be worn with great eagerness.

If you knit such a scarf, you should remember that after washing it can stretch significantly in length.

Knitting a hat or beret in this way simplifies the process as a whole, and putting such a model on your head will definitely not go unnoticed. You can also experiment with it and turn it into a version with a lapel.

From all of the above, I would like to conclude that patent knitting allows you to knit anything: jackets, hats, jumpers, sweaters and cardigans. A men's angora sweater will fit your figure very nicely, and the headband will become the main decoration of the look. Therefore, if you don’t yet know how to knit such a beautiful and simple pattern, feel free to take up your knitting needles and threads and surprise your loved ones with chic new clothes.

English gum - a type of elastic often used for knitting various products, such as: hats, scarves, various pullovers, jackets. This double-sided pattern is also used to make knitted items.

Feature of the “English elastic” pattern consists in the fact that in addition to the front loop and purl loop, there are also yarn overs on the knitting needle.

Pattern characteristics:

  • Thanks to the peculiarity of the pattern, “English elastic” stands out from others with its sophistication
  • The "English elastic" pattern has a unique elasticity
  • Due to its peculiarity, the pattern turns out to be loose and fluffy, which gives the product additional warmth
  • but in addition to the colossal advantages of this pattern, there is also a characteristic drawback: the “English elastic” pattern is very deformed, in order to avoid such trouble it is necessary to knit several rows of ordinary single elastic before this pattern
  • Also, a significant disadvantage of this pattern is the high consumption of yarn.

What to knit with the English rib pattern:

  • Scarves made from this type of elastic are best made in short but wide models.
  • For hats, start by knitting with a simple rib pattern, then knit with an English rib pattern, this combination will allow you to better highlight the fit knitted hat"English elastic" pattern to the head
  • Should not be used this type pattern for knitting the backs of sweaters and jackets, since severe deformation occurs due to stretching of the pattern, this significantly worsens the appearance of the knitted product.
  • Also, do not make the front part of the jackets from the “English rib” pattern, as the symmetry of the products is lost
  • You should not use the “English rib” pattern for processing the edges of clothes, such as sleeves, necklines, edges of shelves - all because of the same drawback that this type of pattern stretches greatly and quickly loses its elasticity.

Conclusion: "English simple single elastic" pattern, knitted, is most suitable for making such products as hats and scarves, elastic bands of socks, stockings, shirtfronts.

English elastic knitting pattern with description

method one:

On the knitting needles for knitting our sample pattern, you should cast on such a number of loops that it is divided into two and add two more edge loops to them.

First row: you need to remove the first loop without knitting, like an edge loop. The next row consists of alternating regular knit stitches and simple purl loops, which are repeated until the end of the row. Knit the final loop opposite the penultimate loop, that is, with a knit simple loop.

Second row: it is necessary to remove the initial loop without knitting it like an edge loop. We knit the main row as follows: one front simple loop from the previous row is knitted with a front regular loop, one purl loop from the previous row is removed without knitting, making a straight yarn over this loop. Thus, you should continue knitting until the end of the row. At the end of the row we knit the edge loop with a purl loop.

Third row: again it is necessary to remove the initial loop without knitting it like an edge loop. We do not knit the loop that was a knit stitch in the second row in this row, but remove it with a double crochet. We knit the loop removed with the yarn over from the previous row with a knit loop along with the yarn over. Next, knit all the remaining loops in the same way until the end of the row. Knit the last stitch with a knit stitch.

We knit all further rows similarly to the third row.

Method two:

First row: we knit with a simple elastic band one to one, not forgetting about the edge loops. That is, we knit the first row in the same way as the first row of the above method. We remove the initial edge loop without knitting, then alternate knit simple loops and purl regular loops, knitting them through one.

Second row : remove the initial edge loop without knitting. We remove the regular front loop from the previous row with a double crochet in this row, without knitting. We knit all purl simple loops of the previous row with purl regular loops. We continue like this until the end of our row. At the end of the row we knit the last edge loop with a regular loop.

We knit all further rows in the same way as the second row of this method of making the “English rib” pattern.

Video lesson for beginners

I would like to bring to your attention a video tutorial on how to knit an English rib with knitting needles. A simple and understandable video will help beginners understand the simple pattern. Also in this video you will learn useful tips on making English gum.

This concludes our lesson on English ribbing with knitting needles.

Straight and reverse rows, in which case you need to cast on an odd number of initial loops. The first and last thread arcs are edging, they form a neat edge of the product, but are not taken into account when describing the pattern!

A beginner will need to make several 10cm x 10cm elastic samples before starting to create the main fabric. It is important to make sure that the pattern is neat, without errors, the loops are even and identical. The sample will allow you to calculate the size of the future product.

The simplest English rib is done by alternating knit stitches and straight yarn overs. Knit the first row of the sample in the following sequence:

Knit stitch and yarn over;

Remove the next thread arch onto the right knitting needle, but do not knit;

Make sure the thread is behind the knitting;

Continue these alternations until the end of the row.

Start the next row of English elastic with a yarn over, remove the subsequent thread bow, leaving the thread behind the knitting. Now in front of you is the loop and yarn over of the row below. Grab them together with a working knitting needle and knit. Repeat these manipulations sequentially until you complete the second row.

Start the third row of the pattern by knitting a loop and a knit yarn over together, followed by a new yarn over and a slipped loop. Next, continue to knit English rib, alternating the patterns of the second and third rows according to the described pattern.

What is a fake English gum?

If you have mastered the English elastic band, you can create an imitation of this spectacular pattern. The technique of knitting fabric will be even more simplified, while outwardly it will be impossible to distinguish a fake English elastic band from a regular one.

Cast on any number of stitches on straight needles that are a multiple of four. Don't forget about the edges. In the first row of the pattern, alternate three knits with one purl. In the second row, repeat sequentially:

A couple of facial ones;

Purl;

Facial.

Work according to the pattern, repeating the first and second rows that make up the repeat of the fake English elastic.

How to knit a scarf with English rib

Knitted scarves made with a double-sided pattern are very convenient because they can be wrapped around the neck and created. The knitted fabric does not “expose” the unattractive underside, as is the case with one-sided reliefs. The product is elastic and at the same time quite loose.

That is why it is recommended to knit a scarf for beginners with an English elastic band, regular or fake. To begin, make several rows of the future product and decide on its width. It is better to choose long knitting needles; their thickness should correspond to the diameter of the working yarn.

Cast on the required number of loops and continue knitting a scarf of the required length with English elastic, for example, 1.5 m. Close the final row of the product very carefully, without tightening or deforming the edge. Cut the working thread so that a tail of approximately 7-10 cm remains. Carefully tuck it into the scarf fabric using a hook.

As you can see, knitting English rib with knitting needles for beginners is not such a difficult task. Now you can run in uniform style hat, snood scarf and continue to improve in knitting.

It is often recommended to knit scarves, snoods, and hats using the “English rib” pattern. This ornament has a characteristic relief for knitted elastic; it is expressive and therefore looks impressive. It can be difficult to achieve the elasticity of a regular elastic band from an “English” one. If the “English elastic” is made with knitting needles, it turns out to be more elastic than necessary, capable of stretching faster than holding its shape. When the pattern is crocheted, it stretches very poorly, but has a noticeably more pronounced relief. That is why the ideal use of “English elastic” is not the cuffs, bottom of the product or neckline, but rather its main “body”. So, an English elastic band is sometimes characterized as “not an elastic band at all,” but a certain elasticity is evident, and in order to evaluate it, it is worth knitting a sample first and trying to pull it. Of course, an “English elastic band” is somewhat more difficult to perform than a simple one, because you need to study in addition to the facial and purl stitches and also a yarn over, but any beginner can knit such a pattern. Especially if you watch a video on how to perform individual techniques and the pattern as a whole.

What is English rib knitting?

To understand what an “English elastic band” looks like, it is initially better to start working on knitting needles. If you have started mastering the crochet hook at the same time, you will quickly figure out how to knit a pattern that looks like an “English elastic” with this tool. It's good to have a knitted pattern in front of you so you can compare it to your crochet pattern. “English elastic” can be done on circular knitting needles. Particularly interesting are patterns knitted from two or more colors. The knitting itself allows you to get interesting distribution flowers, even if you don't make it yourself. As a beginner, you can create a quite decent product without spending a lot of time studying materials and testing patterns. The result will be good if you knit a scarf, pullover, snood or hat with an “English elastic band”. But first of all, it is better to take on straight products, because shaped ones require more experience from the knitter.

Knitting “English elastic” should be started on knitting needles in the 1 x 1 version. In this case, the convex part will represent a column of “tick” loops, reminiscent of a tightly braided pigtail.

The simplest option is description

For the most effective pattern, you need to choose thick threads and knitting needles. Cast on a number of stitches that is a multiple of two. You also need to remember about the edge loops if knitting is not done in the round. The first row is knitted with a regular elastic band, alternating purl and knit stitches. Next, turn the knitting and begin the second row. If the first stitch after the edge loop is a purl stitch (rounded), then we don’t knit it, but transfer it to a working knitting needle. Often in descriptions this is called “removing the loop,” but this does not mean that it needs to be dropped from the knitting needles altogether, otherwise the knitting will unravel. IN in this case“remove” means “transfer to a working needle without knitting.” At the same time as this action, you need to make a straight yarn over, otherwise, throw the thread parallel to the loop, and then knit it into the next knit stitch. Turn the knitting again and do the same as you did in the second row. The difference will be that you will have to knit stitches through 1 loop at the same time as the yarn overs. It is these loops that are knitted, and those that were knitted in the previous row are removed on a knitting needle with a straight crochet. Next we knit in the same way.

The row cast on the knitting needles is considered zero. The first row needs to be knitted, and it will be different from the rest, since it is done without crochets. It is knitted like a regular 1 x 1 rib: with alternating purl and knit stitches. We pay attention to the edge loops: they should be knitted as purl stitches if knit stitches are adjacent to them, and vice versa. The edge loop is not knitted twice when turning the knitting to the other side, that is, it fills two rows.

The second row consists of knit stitches and yarn overs. The knit stitches (they look like ticks) need to be knitted, and the purl loops are removed onto a working needle without knitting, and a straight yarn over is made. In the third row, the purl loop (before turning the work was a knit stitch) is not knitted, but is removed onto a working knitting needle with a yarn over , and the one with the yarn over is knitted with a knit stitch. It is more convenient to knit this loop behind the front wall so that the yarn over does not get “lost.” Then the third row is constantly repeated until the knitting is completed.

When performing a false elastic band, another row appears, performed after two rows with double crochets. It is knitted with a regular elastic band, that is, without yarn overs, with alternating knit and purl stitches. The thread consumption will be less and the knitting will be tighter.

We learned how to knit a pattern of English or patent rib. It's time to take on the simplest product - a scarf. Using the sample, you can understand how many loops there are per centimeter of the finished fabric, and calculate the width of the scarf. Its length depends on how many rows you knit, and you can make a decision on it already in the process of work.

“English rib” can be knitted on circular knitting needles, only in this case the knitting does not turn on a new row, so you need to pay attention to how the loops “look” so as not to make a mistake with the pattern. You also need to look at which wall to remove the double crochet stitches when knitting. So it would be useful to knit a sample and understand how the finished knitting looks better. Circular knitting needles are good for knitting items that should be in the form of a tube. For example:

    snood; clothing sleeves; hats, etc.
If the circumference of the product is much smaller size fishing line, you will have to periodically pull it out between the loops on the side opposite the one you are knitting.

Knitting in two colors is a difficult task, but not in the case of “English rib”. If you have mastered all the techniques of knitting it, then it will be easy for you to alternate threads through a row contrasting colors. As a result, it turns out that on the first side of the knitting you have a relief of one color, and on the second - another.

How to knit an English elastic band for a hat

A hat can also be knitted with this pattern, and it will look impressive due to its corrugated structure. Since the hat should fit the head, the number of loops should be reduced towards the center of the product. Sometimes it is more convenient to use a thinner thread and knitting needles of a smaller diameter instead. The main thing is that the transition is not too abrupt. To knit a pattern easier and faster, you can master the “lush elastic” technique.

By appearance The “face” of such a product is very reminiscent of an “English gum”. The knitting process is simpler, since there are no yarn overs. The first row is knitted with a regular elastic band, and starting from the second you need to knit a loop that is not on the knitting needle, but the one under it from the previous row. Then the loop that is on the knitting needle will jump off and become a yarn over. This is what distinguishes the “lush gum” from the “English” one.

"Tacori" hat with English elastic band

This is an ordinary knitted hat with a characteristic lapel. It can be made double, and then the product will fit exactly on the head, and the ears will not freeze even in cold weather. If you turn the cap up once, it will look like a tall cap. Then it can be worn like a sock hat. This hat is distinguished by a special pattern of decreasing loops. This is done so that the “English elastic” pattern is not damaged and looks organic. Knitting a hat is done in the round, that is, on knitting needles with fishing line.

Double rib knitting pattern - knitting pattern

Double rib is also knitting with crochets. Its secret is that it is made from two fabrics at once, although it is knitted on one pair of knitting needles. The only connection of the double elastic is the edge loops, and it will remain hollow until you connect it further by knitting general series already for the main body of the product. From the first row it is knitted from knit stitches alternating with yarn overs.

In the second row, the loops formed by the yarn over are knitted, and the rest are removed. When removing a loop, the thread should be in front of the fabric. In the third row, the first stitch is knitted, and every second stitch is removed from the knitting needle as a purl stitch. We continue in the same way. If the description is not clear, then you should watch the video detailed analysis knitting method.

Methods of knitting elastic for a sweater or half-overa

We have undeservedly omitted the patterns of ordinary elastic bands, but without them you cannot knit a sweater or sleeveless vest. Such elastic bands are made along the bottom of the product and on the neck, if a special collar is not provided. They are also made along the armholes of a sleeveless vest and at the end of the sleeves of a sweater, jacket or cardigan.

If you need the elastic to compress well and retain its elastic properties for a long time, then it is best to knit it in the 1 x 1 option. That is, we cast on loops and begin to knit alternating 1 purl and 1 knit. If the work turns, then we knit further as the loops “look”. If you can see the front loop (tick), then knit the front loop on top of it, and the purl one on top of it.

It is best to knit this type of elastic not on the sleeves, but along the bottom of the product, as it stretches more strongly and is less elastic. Feature of the 2 x 2 elastic band: in each row two purl and two knit stitches are knitted alternately.
