Create a painting from photographs. Oil painting effect

Today we will learn on our own without much difficulty create paintings from photographs!

The technique will be as follows: first we create a canvas simulation, then we apply a watercolor effect to the photo. It will turn out very realistic picture. By the way, if you choose a photo with a high resolution (high-quality photographs with a high resolution are perfectly taken by SLR cameras, if you don’t already have one, then use mine), then it will be quite possible to print it in a large format (local photo centers will help you), then purchase wooden frame with glass and you have a great picture for your living room or as a gift to friends/relatives!

You should get something like this:

Getting started creating a painting from a photograph:

Step 1

In Photoshop, . Create a new layer (place it on top for now), give it a name "Background" and using the Fill Tool, make it white.

Then apply the Texturizer filter to this layer: Filter – Texture – Texturizer with the following parameters:

  • Scale = 100%
  • Relief = 4
  • Light = Down and Left

Step 2

Drag the bottom layer with the photo to the very top of the list. Name it "Original". Create a duplicate of this layer using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J , give the resulting copy a name "Watercolor".

Thus, the document contains three layers: “Watercolor” (Watercolor effect), “Original” (original image), “Background” (paper).

Step 3

Adjust the saturation of the image. To do this, make the “Watercolor” layer active, open the saturation control window (press Ctrl+U or run the command Image - Adjustments - Hue/Saturation).

Change the value Saturation to -50 and click OK.

Step 4

Make the Watercolor layer active. Use a filter on it Filters – Strokes – Cross Strokes with the following settings:

  • Stroke length = 3,
  • Sharpness = 10,
  • Intensity = 1.

Step 5

To add a paper texture, select the Watercolor layer and apply the Texturizer filter again with the same parameters:

  • Scaling = 100%
  • Relief = 4
  • Light= Bottom Left

Step 6

Reduce the Opacity of the Watercolor layer to 80%.

Step 7 Merge the Watercolor and Original layers.

Step 8

Use to remove all unnecessary elements of the picture. Here you can get creative and, for example, remove part of the photo around the edges. In my example, I will remove the extra green elements. For a smooth effect, set the eraser opacity to about 10%.

Step 9

Make a duplicate of the resulting picture (to do this, just press Ctrl+J) and name it “Picture”. Change the opacity of the new layer to 80%. Then change "Watercolor" to Brightness.

Step 10

Merge all layers. To do this, simply press Shift+Ctrl+E. Now you have your own picture from a photo!

An approximate result you should get:

If you notice an error in the text, select it and press Ctrl + Enter. Thank you!

AKVIS OilPaint - simulation program oil painting. OilPaint allows you to create an oil painting from a photograph. A special feature of the program is a unique algorithm for applying strokes, which most reliably reproduces the technique of working with a brush.

Creating a painting using oil paints is a complex and Long procces. We offer you the opportunity to become an artist and turn photos into paintings in just a few minutes!

Oil painting- one of the most popular techniques: its history goes back several centuries. More often oil paints written on linen or cotton canvas. Oil painting is distinguished by the brightness of colors, plasticity of strokes, depth and colorfulness color transitions, as well as the naturalness and naturalness of the pictorial image.

The oil painting technique is used to create works in the most different styles(impressionism, abstractionism, photorealism, etc.), in the genres of still life, landscape, portrait, historical and everyday painting.

Oil painting techniques are varied. In the program, the variety of techniques is conveyed by a wide range of presets that allow you to simulate different styles of applying paint. By choosing the density, texture and thickness of strokes, you can not only emphasize volume and achieve impressive effects, but also invent your own drawing style.

With OilPaint, the transformation of a photo into an oil painting happens before your eyes. The program creates a work of art using the oil painting technique. You can enhance the effect self made by adding additional artistic strokes to the edge of the drawing and adjusting the surface of the canvas. Add text or watermark to the image, design finished painting in one of the frames of the rich collection that comes with the program.

Bookmark Abstraction allows you to turn any image into a unique one abstract painting, full bright colors and bizarre shapes.

The program offers a number of ready-to-use presets. Batch Processing allows you to automatically create many images in the style of oil painting.

Additional tools for manual refinement of the resulting result allow you to apply the finishing touches to the finished picture, enhance or reduce the effect in selected areas.

In this tutorial you will learn how to turn an ordinary photo into a painting using new tool in Photoshop cs5, which is called Mix brush (MixerBrush).
This is what we will create:

Introduction from the author:
Before I left Photoshop version cs5, turning photos into paintings was quite difficult. Now that this version is here, we have a few new tools, but mostly we will only be using the filters and the Mix brush (MixerBrush) . With this tool, masterpieces can be created in minutes.

Step 1. Let's open the photo first. The author used a photo that can be downloaded. But you can of course use your own photos.

Duplicate the background layer by clicking Cmd/Ctrl+J or by dragging the layer onto the layer icon in the layers palette.

Step 2. Now let’s “take” our tool. Find a tool Brush (Brush) and hold down the left mouse button on the tool icon (you can also just right-click) to open other tools. Find Mix brush (MixerBrush) and click on the tool name to activate it.

Let's choose the right brush. While in the image area, right-click to open the Brush Palette.

Select the brush called Round fan with thick bristles (RoundFanwithatickbeard).

Let's set up the brush. Press the key F5 or click on the settings icon (circled in orange in the image below).

In the dialog box, change the brush settings.

Check the mode again Airbrush (Airbrush) must be enabled.

Use this technique on the other side of the tree as well.

Step 3. Let's continue on the tree trunk. This time we will use a slightly different technique, which starts from one point and goes to another. For this, the author used two brushes, one from the previous steps (with the same settings) and one other - Round pointed with hard bristles (RoundPointwithstiffbristles).

Step 4. Now we will work with the fence.

This is what the image should look like.

Now carefully work the details in a circular motion on the tree and fence (use a small brush on the fence).

Step 5. Now start drawing on the grass in a circular motion. Also change your brush settings to get a more diffused effect.

Your image should look something like this.

Step 6. Now take the tool Sharpness (Sharpen),Select a brush size of 400px. Go over the image to add sharpness.

If you feel like you've gone a little overboard, you can always tone down the effect by going to the menu Edit > Soften: Sharpen Tool (Edit >FadeSharpenTool). The author weakened the effect to 45%:

Your image should look like this:

Step 7 Now, to make our painting look more artistic, we will apply some artistic filters. The first one is Filter > Faux > Dry Brush (Filter >Artistic >DryBrush) and enter the parameters: Brush size (BrushSize) - 0, Detail (Specification) - 10, Texture (Texture) - 3. Now, if necessary, weaken the filter (an example of this action can be seen in the previous step), the author weakened the filter to 35%.

Let's apply the second filter - Filter > Blur > Surface Blur (Filter >Blur >SurfaceBlur), enter the parameters: Radius (Radius) - 3, Isohelia (Threshold - 4.Again, if necessary, loosen the filter (up to 15%).

Our picture is ready! Try different photos, brushes and techniques, and you will succeed!

Often, users want to learn how to make a drawing from a photo so that they can later print the photo and store it as a drawing. Let's look at the most effective ways.

First, let's look at several popular services with which you can quickly create a drawing effect on a photo without installing additional software on computer.

Photo Phunia service

On this site, users can take advantage of an automatic effect that transforms an ordinary picture into a drawing. You can also select the background texture of the source file: colored, white or “special”.

To get started, select the file on your PC. To do this, click on the Browse button on the website.

Then determine color scheme images (black and white or color).

Click on the texture shape you want to output and click on the "Create" button to begin the file conversion process.

In a few seconds, a direct link to download the image from the site will be generated.

Croper service

The next popular site for creating a drawing from an ordinary picture is Croper. This online photo editor allows you to apply additional effects to your photos.

With its help, you can create a unique image without losing quality.

One of the most popular features of this site is the pencil drawing feature.

The file is transformed by creating darker tones of the image, then strokes are gradually applied to the layers of the image, which, in turn, make a sketch from the image.

The editor interface is very simple. Upload the file to the site by clicking on the appropriate button.

The picture will open in a new window on the site. After that, find the main menu tabs - they are located at the top of the site. Click in turn on “Operations” - “Effects” - “Pencil”.

At the top of the page, select the stroke length settings and tilt level.

Then click on the Apply button to start the image conversion process.

This will take no more than one minute. If necessary, you can adjust the contrast of the final drawing.

The result of Croper's work is shown in the figure below.

Creating a drawing in Adobe Photoshop

Using Photoshop, you can also create a pencil drawing from an ordinary picture.

Using the built-in functions of the program, you can achieve better display of all strokes and the final picture will look natural.

The effect of the drawing will be very clearly visible if you print it on a printer. For greater effect, you can use white or craft paper.

All the steps below are done in Photoshop program CS6. The functions used are available in earlier and all new versions of the application.

We will use a regular scanned photo; We recommend not using small pictures when working in Photoshop, because after applying the “picture” effect, some of the pixels may be blurred, which will degrade the quality of the final small image.

First we need to copy the original image.

To do this, open the image in the program, wait for the toolbar to load and press the F7 button. Then click on the Ctrl - J button combination. This way you will create a duplicate layer.

To do this, click on the Image item (main menu of the program). Click on “Correction” – “Inversion”. Also, to apply desaturation to a layer, just press the Ctrl and I keys simultaneously.

As a result of decolorization, we will get a negative image, and not its black and white version. All light areas of the photo will become dark, and all dark areas will become light.

In the layers panel, the resulting negative will be displayed as a second copy of the original layer. Next, let's change the layer's display mode. Click on layer 2 and in the “Mode” line open the drop-down list. Click on "Background Lightening".

After changing the mode, the project canvas will become completely or partially white. On the main menu bar, click “Filter” - “Blur”.

From the list provided, select “Gaussian Blur.” In the window that opens, adjust the slider to create the blur level.

The higher the value of this indicator, the lighter the picture becomes, taking on the outline of a drawn one.

Important! Don't overdo the blur filter, otherwise the photo may become too light and the pencil effect will be lost. The optimal blur value is 12.5 – 13 pixels.

This decolorization method allows you to achieve maximum clarity of the strokes of the picture, pixels are not lost, and the resolution of the picture is maintained. As you can see, the picture has acquired the outline of a pencil, but has not become too light.

Go to the layers window and select the very first layer, as shown in the image below. Then move the pointer to the layer name and wait for the context menu to appear. In it, click on the “Merge Visible Layers” item. Hold down the Alt button and use the pointer to select all three layers that you want to merge.

Select the topmost layer (layer 1). You need to change its display mode to “Multiplication”. This allows you to darken each line of the sketch, giving the sketch more naturalness.

The lines should not be too dark. If this happens, adjust the Opacity parameter to 50%. It is necessary that the color of a “simple” pencil be preserved.

You can finish the job here. As a result we get black and white sketch original photograph. If you want to add some color to your sketch, create a copy of the background layer by pressing Ctrl - J.

Now we only need to change the display color parameters of the duplicated layer. Select the “Color” mode and in the Transparency line set the value to 65%, as shown in the figure above.

The final result of converting the image to a thumbnail will look like this:

Creating a drawing from regular photography in Photoshop will take you no more than 10 minutes, even if you are not an advanced user.

It’s not at all difficult to create a real drawing from a photograph. To do this you will need a suitable photograph, Photoshop and some skills in this graphic editor.

There are many plugins that simulate brush strokes, making your photos look like paintings, but all the automation doesn't look entirely natural. To achieve the best result, you will have to do all the strokes yourself. Do not worry. You don't have to learn to draw portraits. It's already drawn with your camera.

The work will take some time. She is very meticulous. A regular brush cannot be used. You need a brush similar in shape to the one used by artists. After all, a real brush is not round in shape. Each brush hair leaves its own unique mark. This is what we need. We will draw not with a brush, but with a finger. But not yours, but Photoshop’s. There is a “Finger” of the same name on the toolbar. You can choose a brush yourself. The Photoshop set has suitable ones. In the image below you can see what the brush used in the example looks like.

To open the brush settings you need to press the F5 key. The drawing interval must be reduced to 1%. This will make your strokes smoother, but will require more processing power from your computer. You can find the spacing setting in the Brush Tip Shape panel.

Next, change the intensity of the brush to 70%. You can use your own values. Before starting work, duplicate the layer. This way you can easily return to previous steps. if you have Graphics tablet, you can use it. This will make the work easier and easier.

To create strokes, you need to stretch the pixels. You can make bold, sweeping movements. This will determine your drawing style. Move the brush along the lines and contours. Move around the edges of the face first. Move around the lips, around the ears, don't forget about the clothes. Processing is similar to real painting. Only all the colors are already in in the right place on canvas. If you end up with a sloppy stroke, you can always undo the last step.

Change the brush size depending on the size of the elements being processed. While working on the eyes, nose and lips, make the brush smaller. When painting on the background, you can safely make your brush larger, but don’t make it too big. Artists rarely use paint brushes in their work.

Initially, the colors in your photo will be dull and not very expressive. They will be too natural. Just make a copy of the layer and set it to the Overlay blending mode. Additionally, work with light and shadow. You can find out how to do this in the Dodge and burn lessons. Try to emphasize volume and shape.

The detail of brush strokes can be expressed by increasing sharpness. You can also use the free HDR plugin Efex Pro 2 from Google Nik Collection. This plugin will make your photo more colorful. Instead of HDR Efex Pro 2, you can use the standard Shadows/Highlights plugin. It can be found in the Images - Corrections tab.

Finally, we add the canvas texture. It's not hard to find on the Internet. Place the texture as the topmost layer and change the blending mode to “Multiply”. You can also experiment with the Overlay and Soft Light modes. Don't forget to change the layer opacity. This way you can achieve the most natural result.
