Your top ten Finnish bands. Everything about modern Finnish music: what is worth listening to

For many of us, our knowledge of Finnish music is limited to heavy metal and the monsters from the band Lordi (the ones that won Eurovision in 2006). We bet that not a single average Finn can name two rock bands now? Whatever one may say, for the last couple of years primitive pop has been at the top of Finnish Spotify in the form of Haloo Helsinki!, Antti Tuisku, Sanni and others. However, recently, young artists have begun to emerge from the underground, who, it seems, are about to displace the old-timers of the stage. Olesya Khusnimardanova, the creator of the telegram channel “Finnish Differences,” proposes to figure out who will soon be able to glorify Finland on the world music arena.

Paperi T

Henri Pulkkinen connected his life with music more than ten years ago, when he got a job as a DJ at Radio Helsinki, and at the same time participated in the Paavoharju team. In 2010, he and his friends created the rap group Ruger Hauer. The guys released 3 albums and stayed together for almost six years, but in 2015 Henry separated and began a solo career.

Recently, Paperi T has been experimenting with styles and is releasing exclusively on vinyl, and in November 2017 he gave a concert with a symphony orchestra in one of the Helsinki theaters.

For three years solo career Henry managed to release only a few videos, most of which had more than a million views.

Alma

Like many Finnish artists, Alma became famous thanks to the show Idols, in which she took part, but could not even make it to the semi-finals. At that time, the girl was only 17 years old and, of course, she was not going to give up her musical career.

In 2015, Alma was offered a contract by Universal Music, which quickly promoted the young artist. Now Alma is setting music records, the whole world compares her voice with the voices of Adele and Amy Winehouse, and her videos collect tens of millions of views.

This spring Alma toured Europe with French Montana.

Eevil Stöö

Tommy Liikka changed more than 17 stage names and eventually settled on the one that perfectly describes the artist’s work. Evil Stöö performs dark rap with techno elements. In his work you can feel the echoes of the Finnish old school, that same heavy metal from the outskirts of Lapland.

Tommy released his first album in 2002 and called it “Pinkkibikinihinkkichiksi” (“Chicks in big pink bikinis”). Evil's last released album was titled "Iso Vauva Jeesus" ("Great Baby Jesus").

Cledos

Russian boy Vlad, who is now known throughout Finland under the nickname Cledos. He raps in Finnish, records with older colleagues, performs all over the country, and collects millions through his videos on YouTube.

Mikael Gabriel

Dad is Swedish, mom is Estonian; turned out to be Mikael. The artist began his career in 2007, participating in music TV shows, and 10 years later moved to the judge's chair. Last year Gabriel was one of the judges on The X Factor.

For the last couple of years, the artist has been actively making feats with other Finnish freshmen https://site/piarshak/post/slovar-5, acting in films, thereby winning an increasingly large audience.

Vesta

Many predict that the young singer may well receive the title of “artist of the year.” They started writing about Vesta only at the beginning of 2018, but the young Finnish woman began her career three years ago, releasing the single “Kevät,” for which a video soon appeared (so far the only one in the singer’s videography).

Vesta’s name can be found in the lineup of almost every Finnish music festival in 2018, so very soon anyone will be able to hear and see the artist live.

Tuuttimörkö

An artist who is best listened to live. Aaro Teikari (real name Tuuttimerkö) plays exclusively at his concerts live music, uses atmospheric lighting, thereby turning ordinary funk tracks into a beautiful show.

KEliel

The young guy Eliel decided to immediately join the army after graduating from school. Military service, apparently, inspired the young man, and after demobilization, the guy began to actively write music and compose lyrics.

The artist’s creativity is slowly but surely developing: the media writes about him and invites him to perform in different points countries.

Litku Klemetti

Sanna Klemetti (the singer's real name) stands out among the prevailing rap crowd with her special style. The girl plays the balalaika and performs alternative rock. Sanna began her musical journey just two years ago, despite the fact that she is already over thirty years old. Litka Klemetti can safely be used as an example for those who think that it is too late for them to start something.

Satellite Stories

An indie rock band that doesn't try to attract attention with sensational news or shocking looks. Looking at the guys from Satellite Stories, it seems like you saw them yesterday on the way to work or today at the checkout at the store. It is their spontaneity that makes them captivate. Moreover, the group works for an international audience: they play at festivals around the world, and in 2014 SS had a sold-out at concerts in London and Berlin. It seemed that the band’s career was in decline after this success, but last year Satellite Stories pleased listeners with the new album “Young Detectives”.

On the pages of our website we asked readers to name their favorite Finnish musical groups. We received several thousand responses, and here are the top ten.

Since the 1950s, when the Letka-Enka dance ( letkajenkka) drove everyone crazy (look it up on Google, you won’t regret it), in Finland only occasionally did artists appear who managed to reach the world level. However, for last decades There are more and more musical groups conquering the international stage in their own genres.

Among the huge number of Finnish bands admired by fans of rave, metal, indie and other genres, according to the results of the survey, those who received the most votes were:

1.HIM

Playing in its own invented style of “love metal,” HIM is a rock band in its own right. classic look. Lead singer and songwriter Ville Valo has decadent charisma, and the musicians, alongside their frontman, deliver one catchy riff after another. Their image is a romantic cocktail of red velvet scenes, the charm of film noir and songs that immerse the listener in a dark, foggy world where love and death meet. The group has been performing for twenty years. World fame came to HIM after the fifth album Dark Light, which was released in 2005. The group is currently working on their eighth album Tears on Tape.

2. Nightwish

Formed in the bucolic small town of Kitee, on the Russian border, Nightwish became a symphonic metal lodestar that others in the genre can't help but follow. The conquest of the world stage began with the 1999 album Wishmaster. The group already has several world tours under its belt, during which large arenas were filled to capacity. The band's leader, Tuomas Holopainen, has always loved film music, so they new album Imaginaerum inspired the band to create a film of the same name, which the band shot in collaboration with director Stobe Harju.

3. The Rasmus

These guys started out as groovy, energetic teenagers playing upbeat funk. They later evolved into a stylish rock band with just the right amount of darkness that gives their perfect pop compositions an enticing depth. In 2004, there were few places in the world where their song “In the Shadows,” the single from the album, wasn’t playing on the radio. Dead Letters, which became an international hit. The group is especially popular in Asia and Europe - one of the ensemble members now lives in Singapore, the other in Italy - not bad for teenagers who got together just to play something fun and energetic.

4. Huoratron

Aku Raski, aka Huoratron, is a seismic movement and rhythmic form of absolution performed by one person. He plays aggressive in style dance music, which awakens universal vibration, stage frenzy, intense dancing and delight. Huoratron is a musical battering ram under which the walls of apathy crumble. In addition to a couple of hot singles and a long-playing album on the American Last Gang Records, Huoratron wrote several remixes for world-famous artists such as M.I.A. In the summer of 2013, the pounding beats and squelching synths of Huoratron will sound at the legendary Coachella Festival in the USA.

5. Apocalyptica

The group consists of three classically trained cellists. The first ray of fame illuminated them after cello arrangements of Metallica songs. Since then they have evolved into a high-profile modernist hard rock band, albeit without guitars. The distorted wall of cellos lends itself well to the style, and the constellation of guest artists propels Apocalyptica's albums to the top of the charts every time. They have performed with Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Gavin Rossdale of Bush, Till Lindemann of Rammstein, Joseph Duplantier of Gojira, and many others.

6. Sunrise Avenue

This band from Espoo has won the hearts of millions with its melodic pop rock. In recent years they have become one of the most frequently heard bands on German radio stations. The songwriter and lead singer knows how to touch the deepest feelings with his larger-than-life ballads. On top of that, the music of a pop rock band is great for radio. Songs like “Hollywood Hills,” “Fairytale Gone Bad” and “Heal Me” touch the heartstrings of countless people. Sunrise Avenue is definitely at its best in larger arenas. Their new album Out of Style, released in 70 countries.

7.Children of Bodom

Photo: Antti Aimo-Koivisto/Lehtikuva

Children of Bodom, with its leader, guitar genius, lead singer and songwriter Alexi Laiho, is difficult to classify. Of all the many metal genres and even punk, it's hard to choose just one; the group was classified in all possible styles, from melodic death metal to power metal. In reality, the group has significantly more directions. Laiho is considered one of the most outstanding guitarists of our time. The company ESP Guitars even produces a model of his guitar named after him. Children of Bodom have been considered world phenomena almost from the very beginning. The band released a slew of chilling metal classics such as “Hatebreeder,” “Hate Crew Deathroll,” and “ Are You Dead Yet?

8. French Films

These indie road warriors play sunny music, fueled by British indie and post-punk, as well as American surf style. French Films love to travel and spend a lot of time on European tours. Their hot and energetic concerts formed a permanent audience around the group. The team’s records became firmly established in the blogosphere after the release of the single “The Golden Sea” in 2010. The musicians released their debut album Imaginary Future in 2011, and is now preparing new record. Thanks to tireless touring, they won the European Border Breakers Award in 2013.

9. Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät

Photo: J-P Passi/Kovasikajuttu © Mouka Filmi

Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät (PKN) ( Name day Pertti Kurikka) consists of four middle-aged men with disabilities. Their songs, which return us with their sound to the classic punk of 1977, tell about the lives of the musicians themselves. The group was born in 2009 as a result of a cultural educational program, but the team very quickly conquered the whole of Finland. The group's popularity was boosted by a critically acclaimed documentary. The Punk Syndrome. The band recently toured Europe, which included screenings of the film, and performed at the Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. British fans have started raising funds to invite Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät and The Punk Syndrome to the UK.

10. Sonata Arctica

Take the pathos of Nightwish and mix it with the theatricality of Queen. Add arctic madness and you get the Sonata Arctica. This group doesn't do anything by halves. They are classified as power metal, but this does not entirely accurately define their strangeness and originality. The band plays swelling, lyrical, symphonic classic European metal, but an album with a title like, e.g. Stones Grow Her Name suggests that there is something mysterious about them. Perhaps the northern lights dropped their dust on the group? Hailing from Kemi, near the Arctic Circle, the musicians have a devoted audience in continental Europe and Japan.

Contemporary Suomi music reflects like nothing else national character of this country. Finnish musicians do not strive for world charts, feeling great in their originality.

At the same time, Finland is not afraid to challenge world pop culture: is that why it sent tough heavy metalists Lordi to Eurovision, contrasting its own taste with the sweet-voiced uniformity of the European competition? With this act, the Finnish music community said: take us as we are!

Although from the outside it may seem that in Finland they only listen to Jean Sibelius and Finnish polka, many still remember the existence of Nightwish, HIM, The Rasmus, Apocalyptica, Sonata Arctica, Poets of the Fall, who released the single “Choice” in August 2015 Millionaire", Stratovarius, The 69 eyes and Lordi, which thundered after Eurovision. But in modern Finnish music, not only rock is widely represented - it is, in principle, distinguished by an enviable diversity, so there is a place for electronics, hip-hop, pop performers, and a regular mixture of genres.

Pop musicians Suomi: light music about serious relationships

On account of the pop rock band Haloo Helsinki! more than two dozen singles and five studio albums, three of which went platinum. Released in 2015 another album, this time with recordings of live performances, and new singles - here it is worth noting the fiery song “Pulp Fiction”.

No less "platinum" group PMMP in 2013 she played the final concert, after which one of the vocalists, Paula Vesala, took up a solo career. The song “Tequila” from her debut single has already received a rather dark video embodiment.

Paula Vesala's husband is Lauri Ylönen, vocalist of the band The Rasmus, and their son Julius was born in 2008.

Anssi Kela is a pop-rock singer and multi-instrumentalist whose debut album, Nummela, went five times platinum and is now the 13th best-selling album of all time. In 2015, his new album “Nostalgiaa” was released, which quickly found itself in third place in the national charts.

It should be noted that the careers of the participants in the Finnish music show Idols are developing very successfully. Antti Tuisku, who failed to win an unconditional victory in the first season, in fact turned out to be much more successful than his rivals and has since released ten albums that have sold over 250,000 copies. Finno-Portuguese singer Anna Abreu took an honorable second place in the third season of the show, and her albums took first place in the Finnish charts. In the fourth season she took second place Anna Puu, which also collected many gold and platinum statuses. Anna’s most famous songs are “Kolme pientä sanaa”, “Säännöt rakkaudelle” and, of course, “C’est la vie”, for which a very original video clip was shot about how dangerous an abandoned girl can be. Mitra Kaislaranta became the winner of the seventh season of Idols, after which she signed a contract with Warner Music Finland. Her debut album “Mitra” took 12th place in the Finnish charts in the first week, and shortly before that a positive video for the song “Jotain pysyvää” was released, clearly showing how young Finns relax in nature.

Participants in other projects are not far behind: ascension Jenni Vartiainen to the heights of success began with a victory in the Popstars show, where lead singers were selected for a future pop group. The finalists formed a team called Gimmel, which released three studio albums and sold over 160,000 records until breaking up in 2004. After this, Yenny released her first solo album, “Ihmisten edessä,” which, like the next two, went platinum. Today she is one of the best-selling Finnish artists and has won nine Emma Awards.

Pop singer Robin while still a child he won the youth general national competition Staraskaba. Four years later, Finnish Justin Bieber released his first official single, “Frontside Ollie,” and his multi-platinum debut album, “Koodi.” With over 370,000 albums and singles sold to date, 17-year-old Robin is also one of the best-selling Finnish artists of all time.

Singer Sunny, unlike her colleagues, took part in the music reality show “Vain elämää” after her single “Prinsessoja ja astronautteja” took third place in the charts, and her debut album “Sotke mut” and the single “2080-luvulla” received platinum status.

And here Chisu is not only a pop singer, but also a songwriter and producer who collaborates with many musicians. Her debut single “Mun koti ei oo täällä” became one of the most downloaded on the Finnish Internet and held the top position for several weeks. In 2015, she released a new album, Polaris, along with the singles Ihana and Tuu mia vaastan.

By the way, the original stage name Chisu is derived from the Finnish word kisu (“kitten”) and the first letters real name singers – Christel.

Singer Vilma Alina received a contract with Universal Music due to the popularity of her covers and medleys of other artists' songs on YouTube. Most recently, she released her debut album “Ufoja” and the top single “Juha88”, recorded together with Teflon Brothers.

Musician, composer and pop singer Kasmir became widely known in 2014, after the summer hit “Vadelmavene”, and the following summer, his track “Vauvoja”, which talks about love, children and serious attitude to a partner.

The singer’s singles also took first place on the radio. Juha Tapio: His albums have gone platinum several times, and the latest, “Sinun vuorosi loistaa”, released in October 2015, predictably topped the Finnish charts.

Finnish hip-hop is at the peak of views

Finnish hip-hop is extremely popular and, as always, original: just remember the group Bomfunk MC’s with the track “Freestyler”. Cheek is one of the most famous rappers in Finland, having recorded nine studio albums. His YouTube videos have been viewed over 93 million times, he has won numerous awards and is the youngest artist to receive an Erikois-Emma.

Roope Salminen & Koirat– a Finnish band that makes cover versions famous hip hop songs. One of the latest tracks released, “Madafakin Darra”, for a long time topped the charts, and the video of the same name was viewed over three million times.

JVG is a rap duo who became famous a few years ago with the song “Häissä”. Their first three albums consistently occupied leading positions, and on the last, with the unusual title “247 365”, meaning continuity, you can hear several interesting duets.

Singer and songwriter Evelina belongs to a completely new type of performer. Despite her young age, she has been making music for a long time and successfully combines urban pop with hip-hop. Her debut release included the songs “Vuoristorataa” and “Rakkaudesta lajiin”, and the video for new song“Honey” collected over two million views.

Hip-hop artist, music producer and CEO of the independent label Rähinä Records Elastinen recently released his fifth album entitled “Iso kuva”, which reached number two on the charts, as well as the single “Eteen ja ylös”.

Rapper Paleface is one of the most important Finnish artists today, despite the fact that his recordings rarely rank high. Participating in various projects with other artists, his songs often touch on sensitive social topics, and one of his main messages is a call for peace.

Speaking about the originality of Finnish hip-hop, it is worth paying attention to the non-trivial performer performing under the name Stig and embodying the image of a “man with a mustache.” His lyrics are usually about girls and parties, parodying commercial American hip-hop, and against this background the latest video for the song “IT-mies” looks great.

2015 was rich in new releases in Finnish hip-hop. Rap group Teflon Brothers released three singles, and their video clip for the song “Pämppää” received over five million views. Nikke Ankara, whose videos are also very actively viewed, released his debut album at the end of the year, and the rapper Spekti released two singles: “Scatman”, which features a familiar melody from the 90s, and “Se ei mee niin”. Rapper and DJ Paperi T released several singles and the album “Malarian pelko”, which, like the rapper’s album “Pettymys” Pyhimys, quickly took first place in the Suomi charts.

Paperi T and Pyhimus are also part of the group Ruger Hauer, named after actor Rutger Hauer and the gun company Ruger.

Rapper Asa after a long break, he released the successful album “Love”, and the rapper Mikael Gabriel- the album “Versus”, and the video for its track “Viimeisen”, recorded together with the winner of the sixth season of Idols, received more than two million views.

Electronic motives

Finnish electronic music outside the country is most likely known only to fans of the genre, and therefore few people are aware that the legendary DJ and producer Darude, whose hits "Sandstorm" and "Feel the Beat" triumphantly topped the UK charts in the early 2000s, recently released new single "Beautiful Alien" and album "Moments". However, there is also enough here interesting performers, take at least LCMDF- a duo of electronic sisters Kemppainen, who toured Britain, performed live on BBC Radio 1 and worked with the famous British producer Switch, and in 2015 they released three singles at once. Techno musician Jay Fish, who spends hours in the studio, experiments and combines modern hits and classics into massive tracks, and the versatile DJ Rony Rex known for easily making a powerful connection with the crowd. Other electronic artists whose current work is worth getting acquainted with include: Temper2, Lenno, Chantola, Milla Lehto, Joonas Hahmo, Heikki L.

Folk, rock and metal: a fusion of traditions and real drive

"Melodic folk metalheads" Ensiferum, whose lyrics are based on heroic stories, including the epic “Kalevala,” released the single “One Man Army” and an album of the same name in 2015. A folk band Värttinä, where three amazing vocalists perform Finno-Ugric folk songs, released the album “Viena” in October of the same year. Folk rock band Elonkerjuu, formerly known as Lauri Tähkä & Elonkerjuu and released platinum albums after leaving Lauri Tähkä shortened the name, invited a new vocalist and recorded the album “Hehkuva rauta”. Singer Johanna Kurkela, whose albums have gone gold three times, has released her seventh studio album, Ingrid. Folk metal band Korpiklaani, who once started playing in restaurants, and now perform heavy metal combined with Finnish and Sami folk music, released their ninth album entitled “Noita”, a single and two video clips.

In 2015, even the cult Children Of Bodom the ninth album “I Worship Chaos” and the video for the song “Morrigan” were released, and no less cult Nightwish released both their eighth studio album and single under common name"Endless Forms Most Beautiful".

The groups also released new albums and singles Amorphis, Turmion Katilöt, Moonsorrow, Stam1na, Apulanta, Mokoma, Waltari, Kotiteollisuus, Viikate, and some of them appeared at the top of the Finnish charts.

Contemporary Finnish music is truly multifaceted. It’s definitely worth getting to know her better, and then among the thundering hard rock you will discover something extraordinary - for example, grandma Eila Nevanranta rapping or ensemble Eläkeläiset, performing humpa covers of famous songs.

Despite the fact that Finland is known throughout the world as a country of hard rockers and heavy metalists, nothing lyrical is alien to it. Below is a selection of seven of the most romantic compositions by Finnish performers.
