The Soviet youth of the 70-80s has always been and will be of great interest from the point of view of a social phenomenon, but in the fact that this generation was bright, ambitious and hungry for change there is no doubt. Many stories of contemporaries of those years talk about prohibitions and taboos who were called prevent the "rotten" West from drifting behind the "iron" curtain" and prevent Soviet youth from falling into the pool of depravity and immorality.

At that time in the West youth actively expressed themselves through one very interesting instrument - rock. It was rebellious music whose power was so powerful that it captured the hearts of millions of young people around the world. Rock gave birth to many vibrant social youth subcultures - from hippies and packs to metalheads and goths. It would be logical to assume that sooner or later fashionable Western trends will break through the cordon of the information blockade of the USSR, and Soviet youth will begin to greedily “eat” what was previously inaccessible, but so desirable. And this happened, records of foreign groups began to appear from under the floor, rock and jazz clubs began to open. In the wake of perestroika, many rock bands were born in the USSR. One of the musicians who began playing Western music under the communist regime was Vasily Akimov, now the leader of the Monomakh group.

Last weekend musicians performed in Yaroslavl on the stage of the Dobrynin Palace of Culture, before the concert, Vasily Akimov told us how true the myths about the ban on rock and roll in the Soviet Union were, about what a young Soviet musician had to go through to get on stage, the musician touched on the themes of freedom and youth, Soviet romance eras and much more.

- Vasily, you have enormous experience of performing both on the Soviet and Russian rock scenes. I would like to mentally return to the 70-80s. What did you have to go through to get on stage, and how much pressure was there? rock music in those years.

- It’s worth starting with the fact that the difficulties associated with that era are not the obstacles that can really hinder a creative person. Nowadays, I often hear about how many musicians were “strangled” in those days, my opinion is that there is too much fiction here.

I also cannot say that I had to fight my way through something extremely impossible. Back in the 70s, and not even in the 80s, we played for our own pleasure on dance floors everything that is now considered rock classics - the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Deep Purple, and no one forbade us from doing so.

I myself am from a Siberian town, but I know that both in Irkutsk and Moscow there were jazz and rock sections where people were taught music.

We can talk a lot about this, but my conclusion is that now that time is somewhat overloaded with a certain fog of sadness.

- What records were in your collection at that time?

- I was very lucky in my youth. I grew up as a musician at a time when hippie sentiments were already beginning to fade into the background, and powerful, skilled bands such as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and others appeared on the scene. Their music was no longer just a protest, it was something more.

- Was it difficult to become and be a musician in the Soviet Union??

- It’s impossible to say for sure whether it was more difficult then or now. I know only one thing for sure - both at that time and today it was very difficult to get to the top, so what does music require first of all? First of all, it requires dedication, self-sacrifice. It requires that you devote time to it so that it becomes second nature, otherwise you won’t achieve anything, people simply won’t believe you. I think this is the main thing.

- How to stay real?

- First of all, do what you like.

- Is this possible these days?

- I think yes. There are, of course, opinions that not every artist sees what he really needs. But if a musician falls for the bait of influence, then he begins to perform on stage for someone else and play for someone who told him in an instant: “Listen, friend, this suits you better, try to be like that.”

And I believe that rock is the individuality that you have, and which you must convey to the viewer.

- Rock, what is its “zest” that touches millions of people?

- Rock is, first of all, the energy that music emits. It is so powerful and bright that the rock element will not even spoil any existing musical genre - neither pop, nor folk, nor classical. Rock can bring something new and interesting everywhere, because it contains real power.

- What is freedom for you?

- It seems to me that freedom is more of an internal state. I read somewhere that a man who had served time in prison, upon being released, said - I am always free, even behind bars, since no one can deprive me of freedom except the Lord. I hold the same opinion.

- What has changed in rock over the years you spent on stage?

- In the beginning, it was rebellious music, so to speak, a cry from the soul. Now we see how much rock has been conquered by the commercial component over several decades.

- They say rockers never age. What allows you to stay young?

- Sometimes it’s not even so important what physical condition you are in, the main thing is how you feel inside when you go on stage and start playing. But in general, we all get old.

- What advice could you give to young musicians?

- For a rock musician, having an inner core is very important. The group must be able to find its place in a powerful musical flow. This is the most difficult thing.

Unfortunately, the time for our interview with Vasily Akimov was limited; it was time for the musicians to go on stage, where they played for the Yaroslavl residents both old songs and new compositions from a large repertoire that had accumulated over more than a dozen years. In addition, the Monomakh group delighted the audience by performing covers of songs of several famous Western rock bands.

On November 26, the cult Moscow club HotDog's Bar"n"Grill hosted an anniversary gala concert of the legendary rock vocalist, leader of the MONOMAKH group Vasily AKIMOV, dedicated to the artist's fiftieth anniversary and the first concert of the mega-popular rock band MONOMAKH, which he revived again in the 90s.
A democratic and cozy atmosphere developed from the very first minutes of the show. Long before the start of the program, numerous guests began to gather - artists, family, friends of Vasily Akimov and just spectators.
The musicians and performers worked on stage in one breath until the very final chord. The host of the concert program, the fiery and elegant singer Ekaterina Bocharova, invited everyone present to take a brief historical excursion into the 80s and 90s, the period of the creation of MONOMACH, and presented her song to the hero of the day.

Vasily Akimov began the concert program with an hour-long set with the legendary hits of the MONOMAKH group, which were received with a bang by the applauding audience, who had the opportunity to once again hear their favorite compositions in the style of good old rock. On the same wavelength, several compositions were performed by the participants of the 2011 project called “Aerobatics”: Vasily Akimov - vocals, Dmitry Chetvergov - guitar, Sergey Vasiliev - guitar, Fedor Vasiliev - bas guitar, Tim Ivanov - drums.
Well, then - all those artists who came to congratulate Vasily Akimov and take part in a four-hour non-stop concert marathon took to the stage: Pascal, Nikolai Agutin, Nikolai Arutyunov, Masha Kats, Sergei Mudrov, Igor Braslavsky - Giovanni (ex-Doctor Watson ), Veronica Danilova, Igor Rakhcheev, Natalya Treya and musicians of the new composition of the rock group MONOMAKH - Sergey Kashirin, Dmitry Belousov, Igor Rusakovich, Dmitry Vlasenko.
In the finale, all participants of the concert program took the stage and performed “Closing the Circle” and several other world-famous compositions to enthusiastic applause from the audience.

And I first saw Vasily Akimov on TV when the festival “YURMOLA - 89” was broadcast. Akimov was remembered for his powerful, bright vocals and I was surprised that Vasya did not become the winner in the final. And what was my surprise when I saw with my own eyes Vasily, Yuri and Arsen as members of the rock group “MONOMAKH”!!! More than twenty years have passed since then. And I am grateful to Vasily that he invited me to his anniversary and asked me to film this significant event for him.
It so happened that Vasya entrusted me with the video shooting of the wedding, an equally significant event for the Akimovs. And I was always very interested in filming everything that was connected with the rock band in which Vasily Akimov sang. I saw with my own eyes, or rather most often with one eye through the lens of a video camera, the sound recording of songs such as “Queen of the Night”, “Russian Cross”, “I Knew” and others. Subsequently, these songs were included in the legendary CD, which Arsen Zakharov and the group “MONOMAKH” proudly showed on TV screens throughout the country. It was the “MONOMAKH” group that received the honor of being the FIRST (!) of all Soviet rock groups to release a CD on the “MELODIA” company.
I also had the opportunity to film “Drumming School” by Vladimir Rozdin, rehearsals and performances of the group “MONOMAKH” in “Christmas Meetings of Alla Pugacheva”, participation in the festival “Steps to Parnassus” and tours in Istanbul. It was cool! Lots of impressions! And I liked that at the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the “MONOMAKH” group, Sergei Tushin called me “The Sixth Man in the Team”. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the rock band MONOMAKH in its entirety on the same stage since 2004.
