The Karlovy Vary Film Festival is the best youth event of the year! Cultural and sporting events in Karlovy Vary Karlovy Vary concerts in August.

The small picturesque town of Karlovy Vary is located on the banks of the Tepla River. Today it is the most famous resort in the Czech Republic. A beautiful ancient city framed by forested mountains with a rich history and architecture is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. First of all, it is popular due to its healing springs. Traditionally, guests from all over the world come here for treatment. Basically, these are people of mature age. Life in Karlovy Vary is slow and perhaps a little boring for young people. Walking along the colonnade, staying hydrated, going to bed early...

And only once a year everything turns upside down. This town is transforming and belongs only to those who love CINEMA! This happens every year, at the beginning of July - at the time when the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. In 2013, he celebrated his 48th birthday!

Since 1994, the president of the festival has been a famous Czech actor - a charming gentleman Jiri Bartoshka. The festival lives and exists only thanks to his enthusiasm and ability to find sponsorship to bring the joy of watching films to audiences.

Despite its small scale, the festival in Karlovy Vary is considered one of the most prestigious in Europe and can easily be compared with festivals in Cannes, Berlin or Venice. It is impossible to describe the atmosphere of the festival in Karlovy Vary in a few words. She is unique! Countless events, press conferences, meetings with actors and directors and, of course, film screenings.

Film screenings take place throughout the city, but the main center is always Hotel "Thermal", it houses the largest cinema hall, and only here you can feel the real atmosphere of the festival. Before watching the competition film, the stars go on the red carpet and then onto the stage. Evening dresses and bow ties are a must when appearing before the viewer. Red velvet chairs in which you seem to be drowning, a huge screen for the entire hall, and the anticipation of happiness before watching a film - what could be better?

A separate story is the nightlife of Karlovy Vary during the festival. Parties until the morning, discos, concerts, open-air bars - all this and much more creates the feeling of an ongoing holiday.

The festival's ticket sales system is very democratic. Anyone who really wants to can get into the films. To avoid resale and repurchase of tickets, the organizers provide them in doses. Of course, you will have to try hard to buy a ticket, but everyone has equal chances. This is truly a holiday for true movie lovers, those who love and want to watch movies! Films from all over the world compete here in several categories and are judged by both a professional jury and the audience at the end of the festival. The best films are awarded the main prize of the festival - the Crystal Globe.

The awards are displayed in the main foyer and on the red carpet, so everyone can take a photo with them, which guests always do with pleasure!

In 2013, the festival was graced by the presence of world-class stars - John Travolta and Audrey Tattoo. Perhaps next year you will not be able to get to the opening of the festival or the closing party (although this is also possible:), however, you can easily meet any star on the street of the town, come face to face in the cinema hall, or catch a star near the 5-star Hotel Pupp, which has been the symbol of Karlovy Vary for many years and the only place where all the stars live during the festival.

This year we conducted an experiment and decided to go to the hotel restaurant to have a cup of coffee. Imagine our surprise when the security not only let us through, but also showed us the way to the cafe. And a couple of minutes later the festival president himself appeared there - the handsome, fit Mr. Bartoshka. We didn’t wait for Travolta, as we were in a hurry to see the film, but the feeling of coziness, comfort and accessibility did not leave me throughout our visit to Karlovy Vary.

Every year, the organizers prepare a surprise for their viewers - an evening screening of a film starring their favorite star in a summer cinema, where anyone can come absolutely free of charge. Typically, the star introduces his film before it starts and interacts with the audience. This year at the festival we were pleased John Travolta with his musical film Saturday Night Fever.

But what guests from literally all over the world come here for is, of course, films! Non-commercial cinema, art house, contemporary cinema, real cinema - you can call it whatever you want. In any case, this movie is amazing, with emotions, perhaps difficult, making you think and empathize. The festival is a great opportunity for young and talented directors to present their work. I can proudly say that I know of a case where my Czech friend Jan Wolf spent 3 years purposefully shooting a film on a mini-camera; all my friends and acquaintances, non-professional actors, took part in its creation. The film's budget was only about 2,000 euros. However, even taking into account all these factors, the film turned out amazing - in a retro style, incredibly stylish and beautiful. And... the year before last it was presented at the festival in Karlovy Vary!

What can I add? Come to the Karlovy Vary Festival, perhaps it will inspire you to make films and next time we will see you at the screening of your film!

When preparing the material, photos from the author’s personal archive were used

Karlovy Vary Theater.

Karlovy Vary has long been considered a special place in the Czech Republic. People come here not only to improve their health and drink healing water from famous springs. Everyone who has been to this city certainly strives to visit the famous theater, which has an amazing, interesting history.

In Karlovy Vary, famous personalities not only rested, were treated, but also worked, leaving a rich legacy - Beethoven, Wagner, Liszt, Bach, Strauss, Brahms, Grug, Chopin, Aram Khachaturian. Virtuosos David Oistrakh and Nicolo Paganini gave concerts at the theater. It was here that Dvořák’s “New World” symphony was first presented in 1894.

History of the theater in Karlovy Vary

Back in 1717, the passionate theatergoer Tadeusz Damm founded the first theater in the city. There were so many people who wanted to plunge into the theatrical world that soon the building could not accommodate all the spectators. During a performance in 1787, the wooden theater collapsed. It was then decided to build a new building. The patron of the arts was David Becher, a famous doctor, and the theater was later named after him. In 1788, a stone building was built that could accommodate 543 spectators.

Before the theater in Karlovy Vary took on its final form, it had to go through more than one reconstruction. In 1876, they decided to modernize the theater. The design of the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer was adopted as the basis. The famous construction company Grimm received a grant for the construction of the building. It took two years to build the theater from 1884 to 1886.

In the interior, the architects managed to successfully combine elements from completely different styles: modern, neo-baroque, neo-renaissance. The great masters brothers Ernest and Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch worked on the interior decoration. They harmoniously combined amazing frescoes, paintings, and sculptures in the interior. The theater curtain can be called their calling card - the figurative composition is hand-painted by masters. In general, the theater turned out in a unique Karlovy Vary “cake” style.

In May 1886, the first production took place in the renovated theater; it was Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.

Theater heritage.

The theater in Karlovy Vary is considered a cultural center, is of enormous historical value, and a unique architectural monument. Famous masters left a rich legacy. Franz Matsch and the Klimt Brothers created the legendary curtain, which is an allegory composition on the themes of art, poetry, and painting. All frescoes and drawings also belong to the brushes of the masters, all painting fits perfectly and harmoniously with all the extraordinary architectural solutions.

The famous sculptor Theodor Friedl left a legacy of ingenious sculptural compositions. Visitors now experience a sense of delight when they see the ancient griffins greeting them at the entrance. They, like guards, guard the gates to the magical world of the theater. Graceful Muses are located on the façade, and in the foyer visitors can admire sculptural groups.

Modern theater.

The military vicissitudes and hardships of the 20th century had a negative impact on the architectural state of the theater. Only in 1993 the theater in Karlovy Vary was closed for reconstruction. The management of the PHARE Foundation noted the special historical value of the theater and provided financial support for repair work. The theater began its work again in June 1999. The grand opening was marked by the play “Marriage” based on Gogol’s work.

Now the Karlovy Vary Theater is one of the most prestigious theaters in Europe. The program is very diverse and rich, it includes a rich repertoire of opera, dramatic performances, and musical plays. The theater often hosts modern talk shows and various entertainment events.

If you want to see this, come to the performances or just on excursions, which are held regularly for tourists visiting this unique historical monument.

As always, at the beginning of the month we publish the tetra program in Karlovy Vary for the month of April 2014. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office or at the information center.
