Introduction

Felting wool is one of the most common types of folk art. Initially, wool felting was used only for sewing clothes, making shoes (felt boots are a prime example), and making interior items (blankets, bedspreads, etc.). Over time, this type of needlework gradually acquired an additional use - decorative.

Wool painting is a special way of creating a painting without the use of brushes, paints, pencils or threads, by laying out colored sheep's wool in layers. The tools used to create paintings, regardless of the level of civilization, were human hands and water. As the role of art in human life developed, a new direction in creating paintings appeared - without the use of water. The theme of paintings made of wool has always been closely connected with nature, life and human labor. Since ancient times, paintings made of wool have always been present in home decoration and are used to decorate clothing and household items. Centuries-old history not only did not age, did not make wool products a “relic of the past”, but, on the contrary, gave them value, significance and relevance at all times.

The history of wool felting dates back to ancient times, when primitive people domesticated small cattle.

We live in a dynamic and progressive world. But even in such a flow of new information, there is inconsistency in some knowledge and ideas.

The proverb says: “Without the past there is no future.” In search of integrity, in an effort to organize our knowledge, we turn our gaze to history and folk traditions. In my opinion, the ageless artistic thinking of our ancestors, reflected in the folk art of painting with wool, belongs to precisely these values.

To form aesthetic feelings and spiritual and moral qualities of the younger generation, it is necessary to study the fundamental principles of folk and ancient aesthetics.

The entire female half of our family is passionate about the art of laying out pictures from wool. Finished paintings are carefully stored in our house. Some time ago, my mother taught me this craft, and I enjoy doing this work. I really want wool paintings to find their place in our interior. Such things bring an atmosphere of comfort and peace to the house. In my opinion, paintings created with your own hands are an excellent gift for loved ones, since a piece of the soul of the giver is embedded in them.

Chapter 1 Specifics of the fine genre of wool painting

1. 1. The history of painting with wool.

The history of painting with wool goes back centuries.

The history of wool felting is associated primarily with nomads who domesticated sheep. Natural wool has the ability to mat, i.e. form felt. No other material is capable of this. This is due to the fact that wool fibers have a scaly top layer. When exposed to hot water and steam, wool fiber flakes can adhere to each other. However, the wool of a wild sheep almost never falls, since it does not have a scaly layer.

Scientists say that wool felting is the most ancient technique for creating textiles. But how did a person guess that wool could be felted? The history of felting is also connected with the legend of the Great Flood. It tells how various animals, including sheep, were herded into Noah's ark. They had to be in small rooms, their fur fell directly onto the floor on which they walked. Pieces of wool continually fell under the hooves of the animals, and when the Flood came to an end and the sheep were released, the surface of the floor was covered with the first felted carpet.

Nomads were the first people to appreciate the unique properties of felt. They made houses, clothes (insoles, burkas and men's hats), interior items (carpets, runners, pillows), livestock equipment (saddle parts, horse blankets, large felt bags for transporting goods, etc.), and utensils ( bags for storing tea, small dishes and other small items), bedding for newborn calves.

People slept on felt, dressed in felt clothes, and covered their horses with felt blankets. Felt protected them from evil spirits and enemy arrows, and saved them from heat and cold. They even used felted wool in blacksmithing and medicine (in the treatment of broken bones), etc.

Gradually, craftsmen learned to decorate felt products with colored strands of wool, creating the first patterns. The main motifs of the patterns: rhombuses, triangles, jagged stripes, rhombic chains, figures in the form of ram's horns, s-shaped figures, etc. Patterns in the form of herbs, flowers, and landscapes gradually appeared. Traditionally, they were made from wool dyed with natural dyes. The resulting colors had to be in harmony with each other and be resistant to weathering and washing, so serious attention was paid to the process of dyeing wool. Natural dyes were plants that, in order to obtain a dye of the desired quality and color, were collected in a specific place at a certain time.

Using natural dyes, folk craftsmen achieved a varied palette. Thus, the green color was obtained from the leaves of walnut, mulberry and nettle; brown - from a decoction of nut shells, and gray - from mature beans; The pink color of the wool was given by wild poppy flowers and blue plum branches, and the yellow color was given by onion peels. Later, by sequential dyeing or mixing dyes, new color combinations were achieved.

Thus, it can be established that needlework, as a type of decorative and applied art, has been formed from the era of the primitive system to the present day.

Wool painting as an artistic movement appeared at the dawn of the twentieth century in Germany; its founder was the German philosopher Rudolf Steiner. At this time, new breeds of sheep were developed - merino. They are renowned for their finer, softer wool, which can produce more delicate colored strands. Rudolf Steiner guessed thatWith wool you can not only felt, but also draw, without resorting to felting needles or soapy water. Paintings made from wool turn out very airy, watercolor-like, each strand is like a brush stroke. It was from this time that craftsmen began to create not only decorated products used in household use, but also paintings in which delicate colored strands of wool act as watercolor strokes of the artist’s brush. Drawings made from wool are realistic due to the fact that even dyed wool does not have wild colors, like synthetic fibers, for example. You may ask how such a drawing will hold up; everything is very simple, the woolen picture is covered with glass, which is protected from the movement of the picture, dust, etc.

1. 2. Genres of painting with wool

Having originated in antiquity, the art of painting has been improved over many centuries. Wool painting is a fine art. It is very diverse and therefore divided into genres.

Animalist - a genre of fine art, the main characters are animals. In the ancient world, images of animals were symbolic. For example, the Sphinx is the personification of the unity of animal and human. Works of the animalistic genre call for protecting, loving and studying the animal world and nature.

Portrait - from French portrait, from portraire - to depict - an image of a person or group of people who really exist or existed. Typically, a portrait depicts a face contemporary to the artist and is created directly from life.

Scenery - from French paysage, from pays - country, locality - in fine arts, a genre or a separate work in which the main subject of the image is nature. The landscape genre arose in Europe relatively recently, although it appeared in Asian countries much earlier. The landscape is very rich in varieties: rural, urban, marina (Italian marina - sea)

Still life - from French nature morte - dead nature - a genre of fine art (mainly painting and graphics), which is devoted to the depiction of inanimate objects placed in a single environment and united in a group. A still life can consist of homogeneous objects (for example, only dishes) or combine dissimilar ones (flowers, dishes, fabrics, etc.). Still lifes can also depict objects of living nature, but isolated from their natural environment and thereby turned into a thing (fish on the table, game, etc.). And although this word is translated from French as “dead nature,” still life talks about the beauty of life; comfortable and useful things created by man, about beautiful creations of nature - flowers, fruits, seafood, etc.

Fairy-tale-mythological - a genre of fine art whose heroes are characters from epics, myths, and fairy tales. This is one of the most soulful and mysterious genres.

1.3. Color of the picture

An important role in creating paintings from wool, as in other types of creativity, is the compatibility of colors. Color is a certain relationship between all the colors and tones of a picture, subordinate to the overall tone. A harmonious combination often lies in the balance of warm and cold, light and dark tones

Here is an example of the most compatible colors:

The harmony of colors lies in their consistency and strict combination. The color wheel represents a closed spectrum band. At the ends of the diameter there are 4 main pure colors- red, yellow, green, blue. Between the pure colors there are intermediate (transitional) colors. The more colors differ from each other in hue, lightness and saturation, the less they are in harmony with each other. But there is a way to coordinate contrasting colors.

Blue-

brown

Violet

Yellow-

Green-

cream

We conclude that when creating a picture, it is necessary to take into account the color of the picture. It is necessary that each color of the pattern, taken in combination with other colors, does not “stick out” or “disappear”, but creates the overall impression of the main, fundamental tone. The richness of color lies not in diversity, but in the variety of shades and color transitions. When laying out paintings, you should first determine its main color, and then look for other shades.

1.4.Basic methods of painting with wool

Painting with wool is the creation of a picture by laying out wool in layers. There are two ways to paint with wool - wet and dry.

Cutting strands of wool with scissors - to create small details of the picture

Twisting a rope - to create lines

Laying out cut strands with tweezers - to create subtle shades of the picture

Chapter 2 Using the specific features of the genre in your own wool painting works.

2. 1. Safety rules and sanitary and hygienic requirements when working with wool.

Working with wool requires increased attention and compliance with safety rules. Safety precautions are a set of measures that must be taken to maintain health. Painstaking work with strands of wool can be compared to working at a computer, which means you need to take care of your eyesight and posture. While working, you need to take breaks to do eye exercises and relax your muscles. Good lighting when working is very important. It is best to set up a workplace near a window. It is necessary to ensure that there are no drafts in the room, which can cause strands of wool to fly away. In the dark, be sure to use a table lamp. The work chair should be comfortable, with a hard back and suitable for height, so that working on the product does not tire you. You need to sit freely and straight. The body should be kept straight, with the head slightly tilted towards the work. Your feet need to be placed on something solid.

Safety regulations

1. Before starting work, wash your hands so as not to stain the product.

2. Use tools carefully.

3. Do not put scissors, strands of wool, or tweezers in your mouth.

4. Make sure that the glass, which is periodically pressed against the picture being created, is always in a safe place.

From the above it follows that the process of creating paintings from wool requires compliance with a set of health measures. It is necessary to equip the workplace in advance, create good lighting, and prepare the appropriate tools. It is necessary to protect your eyesight and posture. It is important to take breaks while working to relieve fatigue. Doing handicrafts should have a beneficial effect on a person’s psychological state.

2.2. Creating an algorithm for creating a painting from wool using the dry method

1. Determine the genre of work

2. Select the picture format

3. Prepare the necessary tools

4. Determine the sequence of laying out the layers of the painting. You should start by laying out the main background of the picture.

5. When laying out the main drawing and small details of the picture, it is necessary to periodically apply glass to the canvas being created. Failed parts can be replaced.

6. Observe safety precautions when working with tools.

7. When doing needlework, your hands should be clean.

8.Complete work.

9. Place the finished picture in the frame, pressed against the glass.

Thus, guided by the algorithm, it is possible to organize sequential work.

2.3. Creating your own collection of paintings created using the technique "Painting with wool."

Nowadays, the passion for handicrafts is experiencing a rebirth. An item created with your own hands brings a pleasant atmosphere of comfort and peace to your home. The paintings made of wool are extraordinary and attractive. Painting with wool provides endless possibilities for creating your own collection. The author embodies his plan, his artistic idea through the means of this type of art. The themes of my future paintings were formed under the influence of my interests and preferences. The occasion was various events: birthdays of people close to me, observing the behavior of birds and animals, a trip to relatives, natural objects. The collection consists of the following paintings:

Genre: Animation

"Carefree Tits"

A tit bird flew through the forest.

From branch to branch, the bird fluttered

And she chirped and sang,

And she cared little about others.

I wish I could be such a bird,

So as not to burden yourself with anything,

I know this dream is impossible

And that’s why she’s so desirable.

In this work I wanted to depict the playful and perky character of carefree titmice enjoying the sun. A picture with such a cheerful plot in the animation genre can be presented as a gift for a child. The tones of this painting are light and warm.

"Bullfinches"

Scarlet tassel dawn

Paints the bullfinch's breast,

So that in frosts and snowstorms

He didn't freeze in the snow.

I saw bullfinches outside my window last winter and was amazed at the bright colors of these birds. From my dad, I learned that these birds have an amazing feature that it would be nice for people to acquire: if one bird from a flock of bullfinches falls into a trap, then all the others rush to its aid. I wanted to depict these little heroes in my painting. And since bullfinches nest mainly in coniferous forests, I depicted them on a pine branch dusted with snow.

"Tiger Cub"

How I like the tiger cubAll striped kitten,And habits like a cat,He's just a little wild.

Tigers are amazing creatures! Despite the fact that they are predators, not herbivores (I watched a TV program about them). That is why in my picture he is so brave, with beautiful fur.

" bunny "

Bunny Mitka, although small,
But resourceful and daring.
Cleverly played pranks in the garden -
I thinned out the carrots in the morning.
I tore out the beets with roots,
I laid out the rutabaga in rows...
Where did the cabbage grow yesterday?
The garden bed suddenly became empty.
That's the kind of daredevil he is.
This little trickster.

When I was a child, my mother often read me poems about rabbits. This painting was created based on these poems. This painting has a combination of light and bright colors. That's why she's so cheerful.

Genre "Landscape"

"Poppies in the field"

I don’t know more beautiful than angelic flowers,

Which are called red poppy...

I have never seen more tender petals -

Shiny, as if covered with varnish.

Their n atpurple tender heads

Above the field, like little flags,

They evade the wind so deftly

And graceful, but full of courage.

Bright flowers always attract a person's attention and lift his spirits. I wanted my grandmother to always have a light and cheerful heart, and therefore I created this painting as a gift for her.

"Irises"

The irises have bloomed again

A rainbow of delicate colors.

It seems like they came down from the sky

From the blue of the clouds.

In the morning in the garden I meet

Rainbow in splashes of dew.

I'm happy to accept again

A wonderful gift of spring.

And I gave this painting to my second grandmother with wishes for a good mood, so it is also made in cheerful colors.

"Winter landscape"

Snow on the roof, on the porch.

The sun is in the blue sky.

The stoves are heated in our house,

Smoke rises into the sky in a column.

Snowman, snowman
I'm used to living in the cold.
Don't be afraid for him
And in the frosty darkness
Leave alone
Starry winter night.

These works were performed using the “Wool Painting” technique using the dry method.

I began each piece by creating the main background of the painting by pulling strands of wool from the tape and laying them on a fabric base. Then I created a pattern on the background and shaded it with the necessary strands. During the work, all of the above methods of twisting, cutting and folding were used. The finished works were mounted in frames under glass.

2.4. Creating paintings from wool as a means of developing the aesthetic taste of students

In my opinion, painting with wool is undoubtedly a useful hobby for modern children. The process of working with wool has a psychological and physiological impact on the condition of schoolchildren.

Handicrafts drive away stress and dark thoughts. The nervous system calms down and mood improves. Personal qualities are developed: concentration, patience, accuracy.

As my ability to lay out paintings out of wool grew, I noticed an improvement in hand motor skills and greater coordination of movements. When making each subsequent painting, I pay attention to a number of positive aspects that characterize the needlework process.

First of all, it is a joyful feeling of harmony that arises when doing what you love. The feeling is born in creative thinking, when the images of the painting begin to take on clear outlines and color saturation as the canvas fills. When studying color, I discovered that the harmony of colors lies in their consistency and strict combination. Nature itself gave us such colors; we just need to skillfully apply the colorful bounty, the properties of color, and learn to recognize shades. Here fantasy presents different versions of the painting, component and color improvisations.

Painting with wool opened up my design skills. If desired, the paintings can be integrated into the interior of the rooms in such a way that the decor of the room will sparkle with new colors, surprising the guests.

All of the above factors constitute the prerequisites for the formation of students’ aesthetic taste. Aesthetic taste is a deep harmonious combination of the spiritual wealth of the individual; a system of specific emotional assessments of the phenomena of reality and works of art, which develops in a person on the basis of his ideas about the beautiful and the ugly, about beauty and artistry. People with aesthetic taste do not blindly follow fashion unless fashion accessories express their individual characteristics. Handicrafts play an important role in the formation and development of aesthetic taste.

Firstly, this is the ultimate goal of the activity towards which creativity is directed. The master feels a feeling of joy, satisfaction, and pride from contemplating the work done. Based on the practice of creating paintings, a sense of color, shape and their relationship develops. An aesthetic attitude to reality is manifested in the choice of color and style of clothing. When decorating the interior of their own home, people are also guided by aesthetic feelings.

Secondly, in the process of labor, a person masters the method of selecting various techniques, techniques, stylistic findings and discoveries that are part of the decorative and applied arts of many generations of people.

Thirdly, the first steps in the field of needlework can lead to mature original works of the master. Aesthetic taste is formed throughout a person’s life. In my opinion, it is important to acquaint students as early as possible with the wealth of experience accumulated by humanity in folk art. The results of work always bring creative satisfaction.

So, in the process of mastering wool painting, children develop a unique set of values: the ability to contemplate the beauty of nature, the ability to analyze a situation and make decisions independently, the ability to learn, the ability to plan their activities, attentiveness, accuracy, and observation. Subsequently, they are expressed in actions. Such progressive aesthetic development allows us to characterize students as “well-mannered children,” that is, thinking and feeling, acting in accordance with the laws of society and nature.

Conclusion

At the beginning of the work, the following tasks were set: to study the history of the decorative and applied genre of the art of painting with wool; highlight the basic techniques of painting with wool; create an algorithm for creating paintings from wool using the dry method; create your own collection of paintings; to identify the influence of the process of working with wool on the formation of aesthetic taste and spiritual improvement of the author.

Wool painting is a special way of creating a painting without the use of brushes, paints, pencils or threads, by laying out colored sheep's wool in layers. To preserve vision and posture, you need to equip your workplace: create good lighting, prepare the appropriate tools. Materials and tools for creating a picture from wool: frame, wool, fabric, scissors, tweezers.

To make the work process easy to organize for beginning needlewomen, we offer an algorithm for creating paintings using the “Wool Painting” technique using the dry method.

The ability to create paintings from wool is passed on from older to younger, and our family is no exception.

The themes of my own paintings were determined by my interests and preferences. The finished works were mounted in frames under glass.

In the process of creating a collection of paintings, I received aesthetic pleasure. Having spent many days painting, I was once again convinced of the need to develop discipline, organization, and self-control.

It follows that creating paintings from wool develops and mobilizes useful skills and abilities. The combination of hobbies, creativity and work in activities is optimal for the formation of aesthetic taste and spiritual improvement of schoolchildren.

Brief information about the technique... Wool felting (felting: from the English felt felt, felting, felting, stuffing) is a special handicraft technique, in the process of which wool for felting is used to create a pattern on fabric or felt, voluminous toys, panels, decorative elements, objects clothes or accessories. English handicrafts There are two types of wool felting: dry and wet. When dry felting, the wool is repeatedly pierced with a special needle until it feels felted. With a needle. Wet felting is carried out using a soap or special solution. We took as a basis Alexandra Fedorova’s Master Class “Winter Night”

To make a painting you will need: a frame (it consists of fiberboard, glass, clamps); wool (combed ribbon) of different colors - 6 colors are enough for this work: white, blue, light blue, yellow, brown, dark green; scissors, tweezers (for laying out small parts of the foreground), non-woven or flannel - cardboard (as a backing).

Let's disassemble the frame. We put a backing on the cardboard - non-woven fabric. It is designed to “hold” wool fibers on itself. The work surface is ready!

Method - "pulling" - we pull wool fibers from a combed ribbon, which we hold in one hand, with the fingers of the other hand, forming thin strands.

“Plucking” - take the fold of the tape; with the fingers of the other hand we pinch the surface hairs of the tape with frequent quick movements.

Let's make the picture "warmer" by adding yellow wool to the snow.

Svetlana Buinovskaya
Methodological development “Drawing with wool”

This methodological development can be useful for teachers of additional education, as well as educators in self-preparation for GCD.

One of the exciting and interesting areas in arts and crafts is working with unspun wool. More than 8,000 years ago, people discovered that wool could mat. Houses, carpets, clothes, and household items were made from it. One of the first historical descriptions of the use of felt belongs to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus (5th century BC). Over time, the culture of creating felt products spread from the Turkic-Mongolian peoples throughout Central Asia and came to Russia with the invasion of Genghis Khan. Of the many felt products made by the Mongols, felt boots, as well as felt household items, have taken root in Russia the most. It is interesting that felt hats, which Asian people use to protect them from both heat and cold, became a favorite bathing accessory among the Slavs to protect their heads from overheating. With the advent of felt making workshops in the 16th century and the invention of fulling presses and fulling machines in the 19th century, this process was greatly simplified and accelerated. Even today it warms our feet, polishes precious stones and even helps create sounds when playing the piano. Nowadays, felt can be increasingly seen in the collections of famous couturiers: not only individual items of clothing or accessories are made from it, but also entire suits!

For drawing with wool, the so-called combed tape is most suitable. Combed sliver is a combed woolen sliver without impurities and unnecessary compounds, that is, a pure product that has undergone mechanical cleaning. Such wool has already undergone loosening, combing, straightening and pulling the fibers in one direction. Even in ancient times, people got rid of toothache, headaches, and rheumatic pain by wrapping themselves in woolen scarves and covering themselves with woolen blankets. They tied woolen threads around their wrists to get rid of joint pain and normalize blood pressure. It is sheep's wool that is the most healing. Sheep wool is hypoallergenic, as it does not contain microorganisms that can negatively affect even sensitive skin. And lanolin (this substance is included in many anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory drugs, which is part of it, can protect against skin diseases. Working with sheep wool and products increase blood circulation, which promotes rapid skin regeneration. Sheep wool fibers have a unique ability to equalize electrical potential, and this, in turn, accelerates recovery from chronic diseases. The contact of wool with the skin can be considered a kind of massage, leading to increased blood circulation and strengthening of the immune system.

The world of wool, the felt world, is beautiful in its versatility and surprises; the possibilities of wool are endless. By playing and experimenting with colors and textures, you can create your own fairy tale for your inner world. Wool painting is a special way of creating an artistic canvas without the use of brushes, paints or water. This type of creativity is based on layer-by-layer laying out wool of different tones on a fabric base. The technique of drawing with wool allows you to use the amazing properties of this material, replacing paints. Wool can be used to create subtle color transitions, rich spots and barely noticeable haze. Paintings made from wool turn out very airy, watercolor-like, each strand looks like a brush stroke. The technique of painting with wool is called “wool watercolor” or “wool painting”.

Wool painting techniques

There are three main options or techniques for creating picturesque paintings from wool:

1. Paintings laid out from dry unspun wool on a base. Soap and needles are not used here. The fibers are laid out on the base - layer by layer and are necessarily framed under glass.

2. Paintings created from wool using the wet method using water and soap. These are felted paintings that represent canvas. In this case, the wool is felted (felted, that is, the fibers adhere to each other, forming a dense and homogeneous material.

3. Paintings created using a mixed method - first a canvas is formed using the wet felting technique, then a design is applied to it using a special needle. That is, at the first stage, the main color spots of the picture are set, and at the second stage, the plot is drawn with a needle and clarified. You can use a ready-made non-woven fabric to apply a pattern with a needle.

The teacher shows the finished work (the children analyze it)

The teacher shows the felting sequence:

The body will consist of small balls (beads)

To felt beads, lay out the wool in the form of a pile of lint.

1. Tear off some wool from the skein. Don't forget that wool shrinks during felting, so take it with a reserve.

2. Place a piece of wool on the table in front of you and begin to twist it into a tight ball. The tighter you twist the wool, the faster the ball will mat. When twisting a bead, mainly twist the center and just press the sides with your fingers. And at the end, wrap the bead with all these sides, as it were, then you won’t be afraid of creases.

3. Dip the twisted ball into the soap solution, holding it with your fingers so as not to unwind, and soak it well. Take it out and squeeze it a little. Using very light circular movements (barely pressing), we begin to roll the ball between our hands. Periodically dip the bead in a cup of water to wash off excess foam and start twisting it.

4. When the ball becomes denser, roll it between your palms like plasticine. Since the bead becomes more and more compact as it is rolled, the pressure can be gradually increased.

Periodically you need to look at the density of the bead, squeezing it with two fingers. It should become firm at the end.

5. Rinse the finished ball first in warm and then in cold water to wash off the soap.

Here's what we got

Wool - incredibly warm material. Not only does it literally warm, but the little things made from it carry within them all the warmth of the hands and the kindness invested.

For paintings made of wool, combed tape is mainly used. The technique in which I work - “Painting with wool” - is so named because there is little that distinguishes it from classical painting: the same bright colors, the same smooth color transitions, the same volume of the real world present in the picture, the ability to convey the texture of an object , chiaroscuro. The only unusual thing is the material - dyed sheep's wool.

I take the wool directly with my hands, without using any devices, and, having turned it in my hands into the stroke I need, I put it on the picture. The only tools I use are scissors, because sometimes they are simply irreplaceable, for example, to create the effect of a brush stroke or an even outline of an object. There are no other intermediaries between the material and me.

Painting a picture can last a day, or it can take several weeks, it depends on the size and complexity of the work. When repeating a painting, I can use other techniques, not those that I used the first time, but those that would suit my mood. Hence it turns out that each picture is unique, inimitable, and each has its own energy...

I first saw paintings with wool on the Internet and, having bought a dozen basic colors, I decided to try it.

This technique is based on the natural ability of wool to feel, without which the numerous layers of colored wool fibers that form the image would not be able to form a single pictorial canvas. Layer by layer, an image is obtained, which is pressed against the glass and framed.

I present my paintings to the festival.
