The history of Sardinia is incredibly rich and interesting: great peoples left their memories here: the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, and later the Spaniards. Numerous baths and amphitheatres, the fortified cities of Palmavera and Tiscali, Barumini, Santa Caterina and Santa Antine, watchtowers, of which there are more than 7,000, magnificent cathedrals in Romanesque and Gothic styles, all this awaits guests of Italy on this extraordinary, mysterious island. Its pristine, half-empty beaches, isolated lagoons and islets (so easily accessible by yacht) with fine white sand, emerald-colored water, and clean air are truly unique.

The ancient Greeks called this island "Sandaliotis", which meant "sandal". Since then, local residents have a legend that the Creator, having first set foot on the earth, left a sandal-shaped mark on it, which has been preserved in the sea to this day in the form of an island and reminds of divine providence. Around 2000 BC Sardinia was inhabited by the powerful Nuraghi civilization; it is assumed that the name of the ancient buildings “Nugari” came from them - a historical feature of this magnificent island. These fortresses and watchtowers, made of giant stones in the form of truncated cones, have been standing here for more than 25 centuries. The mystery of the origin of nuragha has not yet been solved. In addition to the nuraghe, guests of the island can visit: Costa Smeralda - the kingdom of granite rocks, green juniper bushes, pristine beaches and small islands. Sassari is the capital of the island of Sardinia during the reign of the Genoese and Spaniards, 15 kilometers from which the 22nd century church of Santa Maria di Sacargia has been preserved, and it is also interesting to visit the Sana Museum with archaeological finds and the 14th century Cathedral in the Baroque style. The most interesting thing in Cagliari will be a visit to the cathedral of the 12th-14th centuries. with the tomb of Martin II of Aragon, city walls with the Torre del'Elefante tower of the 14th century, an ancient Roman amphitheater of the 2nd century. BC. and the early Christian church of San Saturino from the 5th century Arborea. Located west of the Canale delle Acque Medie. The city was founded in 1930. The houses are built in art nouveau and neo gothic styles. The municipal building houses a collection of archaeological finds.

In the middle of the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, 200 kilometers west of the Apennine Peninsula lies one of the largest islands in the region - Sardinia. Administratively, it is part of the Italian Republic, but at the same time it has an autonomous status with its own parliament, flag and president, differing from the mainland of the country both in ethnic groups and the language used by local residents when communicating with each other. Legislative acts approved by the Sardinian Parliament enter into legal force only after their approval by the Italian Parliament.

The island has a fairly rugged topography: the eastern part is dominated by mountainous terrain, which turns into a volcanic massif located in its center. The highest point of the island is also located here - Mount La Marmora, 1800 meters above sea level. Between mountain ranges covered with tropical vegetation, there are picturesque valleys threaded through small mountain streams.

A huge number of vacationers are attracted by the unusually beautiful views of these places: the combination of lush tropical greenery and sharp rock masses give the island a special flavor. A mass of small islands, hidden from prying eyes bays and grottoes, create a feeling of complete immersion in the world of nature untouched by humanity, cut off from civilization.

The main sectors of the economy are mining and agriculture. About half of the island's land is occupied by pastures - local residents raise goats and sheep. Agriculture is represented by fields of wheat and barley, vineyards, olive and tobacco plantations. Lobsters, tuna and sardines are also caught in coastal waters. Among the minerals there is a lot of zinc, copper, iron, and linite. In addition, the island has developed textile and leather production. There are no industrial enterprises at all, which creates environmentally friendly air throughout the region. From year to year, the beaches of Sardinia win in almost all European categories, being considered the cleanest and most comfortable. However, in addition to this, tourists are attracted here by interest in the unique, distinctive peoples inhabiting the ancient island, as well as monuments of ancient culture left by their distant ancestors.

Historical reference

According to archaeologists, the first settlements in this territory were formed in the distant times of the Neolithic era - about 150 thousand years BC. It is from this period that ancient structures that served as burial grounds - “enchanted houses” or “domus de hanas”, as local residents call them - date back. The stone structure symbolizes the doors that lead to the “enchanted world.” The local population of that time is credited with the role of the first winegrowers and shipbuilders of the region.

By the 15th-7th centuries BC, a Nuraghi civilization had formed on the island, leaving behind numerous buildings in the form of truncated stone cones that have survived to this day. The purpose of these tower structures has not yet been deciphered by modern scientists.

The next period in the history of the island is the Phoenician. Around the 7th century BC, the Phoenicians founded the first port settlements in Sardinia, which served as the basis for the further development of the island. Then the island was captured by the Carthaginians, who reigned supreme here until the 3rd century AD, until they were ousted by the Great Roman Empire, with the fall of which the Vandals came to power. However, already in the 6th century they were expelled from Sardinia by the Byzantine Emperor Belisarius. Then the island fell into the hands of the Arabs, Spaniards, Austrians, and in 1861, the Kingdom of Sardinia joined the united state of Italy.

Such an abundance of cultures and peoples who ruled Sardinia at different times has left many magnificent historical and architectural monuments here.
