Options for placing a bicycle in an apartment. On the ceiling, balcony, next to the bed: where and how to store bicycles in small apartments

Bike. Once dearly loved by many of us as an individual form of transportation, the bicycle was, in the recent past, pushed into the far corner of history for the sake of acquiring a brand new, or not so new, foreign car. True, active recreation with long bicycle rides was not completely abandoned, but it was turned to from time to time.

The rapid growth of large cities and their transformation into megacities has played a cruel joke on car enthusiasts, and made them remember their two-wheeled friend. People on bicycles began to appear more and more often on the streets, and on weekends and holidays the municipality again began organizing bicycle rides promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Bicycle sales have almost doubled compared to last year. People are switching to bicycles, leaving their cars in the garage. Traffic jams, you know...

says the senior manager of the Moscow bicycle salon BikeSalon, located on 5th Kabelnaya Street.

Not everyone wants to stand in many kilometers of traffic jams on highways, especially during the warm weather season. But with the increase in two-wheeler ownership, problems not only with parking have begun to arise. A complication after a pleasant purchase was storing bicycles in the apartment, especially if it was a small apartment.

Flights of stairs, strollers, parking at the entrance, this is, of course, a way out of this situation, but until the indignant neighbors demand that the bicycle be removed, since this type of storage violates fire safety standards. In addition, it is no secret that bicycles have always been a tasty morsel for yard thieves. And no devices can protect a faithful friend from their prey.

So you have to store the iron horse in your own apartment - on the balcony, in the corridor, in the room, or even in the kitchen, taking away living space, which is already not enough.

The main task of modern designers has become the question of not only ensuring the storage of bicycles in the apartment, but also fitting them into the interior in such a way that the already small area of living rooms is not cluttered, and the interior has a special charm that emphasizes the lifestyle of the owner of this room.

Believe me, there were a lot of ideas. Non-standard solutions have become especially popular. And this is not just locking the bike in the closet or taking it out onto the balcony or loggia. The least problems arise with placing folding bikes in an apartment:

Even in a one-room small apartment there will always be a secluded corner for them, where the folded model will not disturb anyone. But there are bikes that don't fold, and that's the majority of them. In addition to the issue of placement, there is a separate issue of storing a bicycle - weather conditions. Everything is simple in dry, warm weather. I wiped down the bike, wheels, frame, and brought it into the room. Rain, dirt, and slush dictate not only the special conditions for storing bicycles in the off-season, but also the specifics of caring for them. But each cyclist decides this question independently.

How to hang a bike on the wall

The ideal way to store a non-folding bike model is to hang it on a wall opening. Let's consider options for how to hang a bicycle on the wall in the hallway, on the balcony, in the garage using various mounts:

  • horizontal method;
  • in a vertical position;
  • suspended from the ceiling.

Did you know that if there are several bicycles in the family, you can use special brackets or purchase a rack on which several bikes are suspended at once.

Horizontal position of the bicycle on the wall

The option of hanging a bike on the wall by the frame is the most common type of bike storage. For this purpose, special holders are used:

  • bicycle hook;
  • shelf-rack;
  • bracket with fastening.

There are a great many designs of bicycle hooks, but the principle is the same for all holders. Some hooks simply need to be screwed into the wall like a screw, while other types of bike hooks are welded to a base that attaches to the wall.

storing a bicycle on the wall – photo

There are bike hooks for storing the bike in both horizontal and vertical positions. The most positive aspect of the design of some hooks is that the bicycle fits snugly against the wall when hung. When the bike is removed, the rubberized hook can be turned towards the wall so that it does not stick out and cannot be touched.

Vertical way to store a bike on the wall

Storing your bike vertically can be done using:

  • vertical fastening in the form of special hooks;
  • racks;
  • bicycle shelves.

Particularly popular is the vertical mount, designed for two bicycles with a wheel diameter of up to 29 inches.

It is important to know that when hanging two bicycles at the same time, the distance between them should be at least half the length of the handlebars so that the bikes do not touch either the pedals or the handlebars.

One of the most original vertical mounts is the TM Da Vinci holder model with a stand for the rear wheel. It helps to avoid marks left by rubber on the walls.

For many people, the relationship with racks is quite “tight”, due to the bulkiness of the structure. Racks made of metal tubes are rarely used. More often they can be seen in cycling clubs, where several bikes need to be parked at the same time.

The range of bicycle racks is quite large. The designs of these bicycle racks are elegant and attractive, and they fit perfectly into the interior of any apartment.

Storing a bike on the balcony

Long-term storage of a bicycle on the balcony implies its careful preparation for the upcoming storage. There are certain rules for storing a bike so as not to shorten its service life:

  1. Thorough cleaning of the bicycle, especially the wheels, from various types of dirt.
  2. Removing old grease.
  3. Applying new lubricant to the main components of the bike - gear shift, brake system, hinge systems.
  4. Each metal part must be thoroughly lubricated with machine oil to avoid corrosion.
  5. The shock absorber springs must be lowered before long-term storage.
  6. The tires of a bicycle stored on the floor should be inflated regularly to avoid deformation of the rubber.
  7. To prevent the rubber from drying out, it should be lubricated with silicone.

As a storage room, you can use the most shaded corner on a loggia or balcony, where the sun's rays do not penetrate well. There should be constant access to your iron friend at any time of the year. To store a bicycle in winter, it is advisable to reduce its size as much as possible:

  • turn the steering wheel 90°;
  • remove the front wheel;
  • unscrew the pedals from the connecting rods by screwing them in from the reverse side;
  • place on the wall using bicycle hooks.

For all-season storage of the bike on the balcony, you can use various types of mounts, both wall and floor. Mounts that allow you to place the bike under the ceiling are very popular.

How to hang a bike from the ceiling

Ceiling mounts are available in two modifications:

  1. Models equipped with a pulley system for raising and lowering the apparatus without the use of a stepladder, with a simple ceiling fixation in the form of hooks. The disadvantage of this fastener is its low load capacity. Ceiling mounts are not recommended for use on bikes weighing over 22 kg.

  1. Models for hanging a bicycle with its wheels up in the form of simple long hanging hooks, fixed to the ceiling using a platform.

A detailed video will show you how to independently assemble a bicycle lift with a locking device and place it on the ceiling:

Unusual bicycle storage

Designer finds are sometimes simply stunning in their simplicity and perfection. We offer five ideas for unusual bicycle storage from domestic and Western interior designers.

Store your bike in a closet

Special purpose storage units include bike cabinets. A distinctive feature of this part of the interior is its bulkiness. Owners of spacious rooms and wide hallways can afford to store a bicycle in a closet, where they can independently build such a furniture attribute.

The bicycle closet houses not only the bike, but also equipment - helmets, knee pads, and other protective paraphernalia. The biggest disadvantage of such a specific part of the interior is its high cost.

Well, if the owner of the bicycle is also the owner of a personal plot, then in addition to the garage where bicycles are often stored, you can build a separate bicycle garage for the bike instead of a closet, or put up a simple tent:

The lack of a garage is not yet a reason to exchange cycling for chess. Let's learn how to store a bicycle in an apartment of any size!

The question of where to store your bike is somewhat surprising. Most often, it implies different answers: depending on whether it is autumn-winter or spring-summer. In the first case, we are talking about where to put the unit away until the next season, in the second - where to leave it after cycling so that it is always at hand. Let's look at all the options.

Materials prepared by the portal about design and renovation Houzz.ru

1. Make your decision in store

Prudent people think about storing a bike before purchasing it. This, of course, is not as interesting as putting a big dirty bike into a one-room apartment filled with furniture in an emergency, but on the whole it’s correct. The folding mechanism of the bicycle will save you from the problem of finding a place: such a unit will easily fit into a standard pantry or a standard mezzanine above the front door, and will not take up much space on the balcony.

With a non-folding model, everything is somewhat more complicated. But in any case, keep in mind: an aluminum frame is preferable to a steel one in terms of corrosion, and the absence of hydraulic lines (brakes, forks) will not allow them to suffer from frost if you have to leave it outside for the winter.

2. Before reaching home

Ideally, a bicycle should not be brought into the house at all, so as not to dirty the floor and walls - at least during the cycling season. Washing the wheels after every walk is still a pleasure: you can’t run around with a rag, it won’t fit into the bathroom. If the stairwells in the entrance are not suitable for leaving two-wheeled vehicles there, it makes sense to look for like-minded people and pool a garage (ideally a warm one): you can store a bicycle there all year round, preserving it for the winter. Warm underground parking also offers winter storage services for equipment.

The law is contradictory: both the Housing Code and Sanitary Regulations require residents to prevent mismanagement and littering of entrances, but at the same time they recognize staircases as “common property” - that is, all residents can use it if they do not limit the rights of neighbors. This means that even one justified claim is enough for you to limit someone’s rights with your bicycle.

The most powerful argument against wheels in the entrance is fire safety requirements. For fire control, everything is usually simple: evacuation routes must be clear, any obstacle is a violation of the requirements, an order and a fine. Finally, the entrance is the leader in the number of bicycle thefts, and even a thick chain does not guarantee the safety of the equipment.

Advice: think about how you will roll (or even carry) a dirty bike across the apartment. And buy special shoe covers for bicycle wheels or a bicycle carrier for the entire bicycle.

An insulated closed balcony is one of the best places to store bicycles in an apartment both in winter and summer. There is only one drawback - you will no longer be able to set up a full-fledged summer garden or create a workplace here. There are two ways to combine business and pleasure: hang your bike on special brackets (sold in bike shops) from the ceiling in a lying position, or mount it vertically on the wall.

Thus, as in the photo, you can compactly store two or three bicycles even on the smallest balcony, while hardly using its usable area. The vertical system is also suitable for summer - all that remains is to wipe the wheels.

Advice: make sure that the bike is not exposed to direct sunlight: this can cause the protective varnish to deteriorate, the paint to peel off, and rubber and plastic to crack. Just cover the adjacent part of the window with a roller blind (if it is not possible to store the bike in a case).

To save space, the bike can be partially disassembled: remove the wheels and fenders, saddle, handlebars (or turn it 90 degrees), rearrange the pedals so that they look inward. The occupied space will be halved - you can hide it on the mezzanine. Or under the bed. A voluminous podium allows you to hide a lot of useful things under the mattress. Sometimes it is not even necessary to disassemble the bike, just remove the pedals and turn the handlebars.

By the way, about the mezzanine. In many old houses, such as Khrushchev buildings, apartment layouts included mezzanine cabinets in the hallway and next to the kitchen. Usually, new owners dismantle them during renovations and never return them (from an aesthetic point of view, this is a rather sad design). However, it makes sense to leave such a mezzanine for winter bicycle storage. Again, we are talking about storing a folding bike or arranging it element by element.

Or you can use the end of the corridor by installing a wardrobe there. Instead of washing machines in the photo, it’s easy to imagine a pair of bikes. On the Internet you can find layouts of built-in cabinets for 2-4 bicycles.

Important: do not place the bicycle near a radiator or electric convector - the heat will “dry” the rubber and deteriorate the protective varnish on the frame.

When designing a bicycle mount, expect that it must support the weight of the bicycle plus 5 kg, that is, for an adult model at least 20 kg. The mounts must be mounted so that there is at least 15 cm from the bicycle wheels to the floor, for ease of cleaning.

See if you have any “dead” zones in your apartment that are never used. This could be a niche between the wall and the closet, a gap between the wall and the sofa, or 20 cm between the wall and the door - this is enough to accommodate a thin sports bike (especially if you remove the handlebars and wheels). For vertical fastenings, any door is suitable (for example, to a closet), but so that it opens at the same time.

Tip: provide stands for both wheels so as not to spoil the finish.

From an ergonomic point of view, the position of the bike along the wall is, of course, advantageous - especially in a niche.

The roller ceiling suspension system is only suitable for high rooms, and in the domestic housing stock (standard high-rise buildings) is rather pointless. The only option for its use is, again, along the wall under the ceiling, as a more effective alternative to wall hooks.

How to fit into the interior

A bicycle on the wall will inevitably attract attention and become either an ally or a destroyer of the interior. It will look best in a teenage children's room or in a loft-style room: here any technique and mechanics are more or less appropriate. Two-wheelers also look good in cool Scandinavian interiors, not crowded with furniture.

Otherwise, a bicycle is the same element of the interior as, for example, a chair. So the wall should also be a good background for the bike. A win-win combination: a dark silhouette plus a white wall. Retro models will look especially nice in such an environment.

Storing a bicycle in an apartment - 25 creative ideas

Storing a bicycle in an apartment is an important problem for all owners of two-wheeled vehicles. In Europe, cyclists are treated with due respect - there is a developed network of bike paths and parking lots. Two-wheeled transport has become widespread not only as a way to stay in good physical shape, but also as an economical means of transportation around the city. There are many non-standard solutions for storing a bicycle at home, proposed by designers.

Options for storing a bicycle in an apartment

  • In apartments where there is enough space, you can install a special wardrobe. The most rational solution would be to install a cabinet in the hallway. You can independently develop a cabinet layout for several bicycles. Specialized stores offer ready-made furniture of convenient design for sports equipment. The furniture can be made in the form of a folding screen, wooden or aluminum frames. At the bottom there are shelves or drawers for storing tools and accessories. The cabinet is installed along the wall, using space sparingly. There is no need to lift the bike vertically. The option is beautiful and functional, but not suitable for everyone.
  • Frame mount with built-in storage space. This option allows you to use every centimeter of space. Due to the configuration, the bike hooks are quite long and the resulting space between the bike and the wall can be used to install a shelf or stand. Here you can store cycling gloves, a flashlight, a lock and other accessories.
  • Wheel mount. Vertical storage perpendicular to the wall is suitable for long narrow corridors when the mount is installed on a short wall so that the bike hangs in the corner along the long wall. The design is minimalistic and does not attract much attention. When installing it yourself, you need to be careful about fastening the dowel or self-tapping screw. A constant heavy load can lead to unexpected consequences - a vehicle crash.
  • Under the ceiling. An unconventional method that is suitable for long-term storage. The fixation system is not easy to install, but reliable.
  • On the counter. The stands are made of metal tubes. The mounting option is convenient for storing two or three bicycles. The racks take up significant space, so they are suitable for corridors with a large area.
  • Behind the door. With the help of mounts, you can hang your bike on a door that is not often used. A closet door will do.
  • Specialized stores offer a variety of shelf options that make it easy to hang your bike on the wall. By decorating the shelf with decorative elements, you can get an attractive design that will decorate the corridor. The upper part of the shelf is used in different ways - for books, flowers, small parts. It is not difficult to make a shelf yourself.
  • In the niche by the door. Involves long-term storage in apartments, where possible.
  • On the floor. There are convenient stands on sale that, after fastening, rotate 180 degrees. Transport can be fixed at any angle to the wall. When placing the bike along the wall, the rack will also serve as a reliable fixation.

Bicycle storage on the balcony and loggia

The open balcony is only suitable for keeping a bicycle in summer. Manufacturers do not recommend storing bicycles at indoor temperatures below zero. Temperature changes, rain, snow, fog negatively affect the condition of metal, paint, plastic, and hydraulics. Even if you cover your vehicle with plastic film, it is difficult to avoid corrosion. Temperature differences lead to condensation.

An insulated closed balcony is the most suitable place to keep a bicycle in an apartment at any time of the year. It is most convenient to place folding bicycles on the balcony. They take up minimal space. When folded, the structure can be easily moved from the entrance doors to the balcony. The bike can be hung on special brackets from the ceiling, mounted vertically on the wall, or two bikes can be placed compactly on the ceiling of a small balcony or loggia. Direct sunlight should be avoided - plastic and rubber can crack, paint can peel off, and protective varnish can deteriorate.

Transport must be preserved for the winter:

  • clean from dirt and dust;
  • remove old grease;
  • re-lubricate gear shifters, chain, brakes, joints;
  • Wipe metal surfaces thoroughly with an oiled cloth;
  • loosen the shock absorber springs and cables;
  • the cameras should be lowered a little if the vehicle is hanging, if standing, periodically, if necessary, pump it up;
  • Lubricate the tires with protective silicone - this will protect them from drying out.

Types of fastenings (video)

In a small city room, a two-wheeler mount is often the only solution. The basic principle of transport placement is that if it is not used for a short time, it should not take up space. Most placement methods involve lifting the mechanism and securing it. The type of fastening depends on the type of bracket.

  • The main mounting method is wall-mounted on a frame. You can buy a frame or make it yourself. You can install it in a convenient place on the balcony or in the corridor. An additional plus is that you can hang more than one bike on this type of bracket. This installation option is widely used in apartments that are not overloaded with furniture. In industrial horizontal systems, the bicycle hanger can be mounted on a rail system. The system folds up when not in use. This method may not be entirely suitable for placing models with complex frame geometry or dual-suspension bicycles.
  • Hangers for vertical storage.
  • Ceiling mount. Quite a complex system using cables, hanging blocks and hooks for fastening. Once fixed to the ceiling, the transport does not take up any free space in the room. The disadvantage of this method is the complexity of installation and high cost.
  • Bike hooks. The most common mounting option. The method requires minimal effort. It is enough to purchase the necessary equipment. The design of the hooks is very different: some are screwed in like screws, others are welded onto a common base, which can be fixed to a wall or ceiling. Fastening of hooks can be horizontal or vertical. Among the hooks for vertical fastening, Da Vinci presents an interesting solution. The upper part of the mount is the hook itself, the lower part is a stand for the rear wheel, so as not to stain the wall.

When designing fasteners yourself, you must expect that it must withstand the weight of the vehicle plus 5 kg, for an adult model at least 20 kg. For ease of assembly, the mounts must be mounted so that there is at least 15 cm between the wheels and the floor. You can purchase special waterproof wheel covers that will protect your apartment from street dirt. You don’t have to carry the bike in your hands to the balcony – the covers do not make it difficult to move.

Ideas for storing a bicycle in an apartment

One of the fondest memories of our childhood is watching our dad teach us to ride a bike and the feeling when we looked back and realized that we were eating on our own, without his help. In the last few years, against the background of the awakened desire of many to pedal, cycling themes have increasingly begun to appear in the projects of modern designers.

In addition to the stable rise in fuel prices, the second important incentive is taking care of your health. After all, the problem of excess weight is now probably the most pressing among people over the age of 25.

Let's move on to the topic of storing a bicycle in an apartment and we have selected for you 25 interesting solutions for including a bicycle in the design of an apartment.

Storing a bike on the wall

Obviously, the most popular storage solution is bicycle racks, located, for example, near supermarkets. But for an apartment, this option is not suitable, due to the occupied area being too large.

The most optimal idea for placing a bicycle in the interior of a city apartment today is to use wall mounts. But in this article, we want to show you how you can use the simple hook hanging option to apply it to your room design.

Speaking about matching the appearance of the bicycle with the design of the room, you should first of all take care of aesthetics, and then functionality. The best starting point is the color scheme of the apartment or room.

The first option for storing a bicycle in an apartment is to match the color of the bicycle as closely as possible with the overall color scheme of the interior.

The second option is the radical opposite of the previous one, in which you place a bicycle that visually stands out from the general background. In this case, a two-wheeled object becomes the focal point of the room.

When choosing a place to store your bicycle, you should not limit yourself to a specific room in the apartment, such as a hallway, or a balcony. A creative approach in this matter allows you to consider the option of placement in any room of the apartment: living room, bedroom, kitchen.

If you are a sports family and like to go out of town on bicycles with the whole family on weekends, the number of vehicles is directly proportional to the number of family members. In this case, you can’t do without a creative approach to finding ideas and storage spaces.

In addition to wall mounts and bike racks, you may have to use the vertical space of the apartment, of course, provided the ceilings are high enough.

In a boy's bedroom, a bicycle hung on the wall will look very organic and will not only fill the empty space, but also add playfulness to the room.

In addition to the functional models that you use every day, you can decorate the interior of any room with vintage bicycle models, as in this case, a children's model from 1958, which serves as a noticeable decor in a modern living room of a country house.

If you are a huge fan of bicycles, but you don’t want to mount it on the wall or ceiling, all you have to do is use paintings and posters depicting rare specimens. Whatever method you ultimately choose from the 25 ideas for storing a bicycle in an apartment, we hope that our article helped you with this.

Sports and life: Where to park a bicycle in a small apartment

Prudent people think about where to store a bicycle in a small apartment even before purchasing it. This, of course, is not as interesting as, in an emergency, stuffing a big dirty bike into a one-room apartment filled with furniture, but, on the whole, it’s correct. Washing the wheels after every walk is still a pleasure: you can’t run around with a rag, it won’t fit into the bathroom. And how to store a bicycle in an apartment if there is absolutely no space? If the stairwells in the entrance are not suitable for leaving two-wheeled vehicles there, it makes sense to look for like-minded people and pool a garage (ideally a warm one): you can store a bicycle there all year round, preserving it for the winter. Warm underground parking also offers winter storage services for equipment.

The favorite place to store bicycles in Russia is staircases. The equipment is always at hand, and dirt does not penetrate into the house - very convenient. But don’t think that the neighbors are just as happy about your resourcefulness: bicycles and strollers prevent residents from carrying bulky furniture, block access to flowers on the windowsills in the entrance and, finally, they dirty the common property and are simply annoying (“look at them!”).

Warm underground parking also offers winter storage services for equipment.

The second option is to contact your management company for a duplicate basement key. Alas, our basements often suffer from high humidity - in such a climate, equipment begins to rust. And they may not give you the key: there are still important utilities, a heating unit, etc. there. Some HOAs have the option of collective storage of bicycles in the attic from fall to spring. In general, it won’t be superfluous to contact the management company (HOA) - maybe they will suggest something useful.

The favorite place to store bicycles in Russia is stairwells. The equipment is always at hand, and dirt does not penetrate into the house - very convenient. But don’t think that your neighbors are just as happy with your resourcefulness: bicycles and strollers prevent residents from carrying bulky furniture, block access to flowers on the window sills in the entrance and, finally, dirty the common property, and are simply annoying (“look, they put it on!”).

The law is contradictory: both the Housing Code and Sanitary Regulations require residents to avoid waste and littering of entrances, but at the same time they recognize stairwells as “common property” - that is, all residents can use it if they do not limit the rights of neighbors.

But if you are lucky with your neighbors and the entrance is carefully guarded, choose the most remote, unused places to store your bicycle (for example, on the wall, using vertical mounts or hooks, as in the photo) - this way you will not interfere with the cleaning of the staircase.

If the design of the entrance allows, you can adopt this placement technique. Although it is more suitable for individual houses.

Most Russians are firmly convinced that the balcony is generally the only place where you can store a bicycle in an apartment. But there are several nuances here too.

An open balcony is only suitable for summer storage of a bike (if you love it, of course). Temperature changes and precipitation are detrimental to hydraulics, plastic, paint and metal. Even if you loosen all the cables, lubricate all the components with oil and hide the bike under a waterproof film, you still cannot avoid corrosion - for example, due to condensation. A real torture for a bicycle would be to hang it over the balcony bars - you can immediately say goodbye to it. Manufacturers generally recommend not storing bicycles in rooms with temperatures below zero.

Tip: Think about how you will roll (or even carry) a dirty bike across the apartment. And buy special shoe covers for bicycle wheels or a bicycle carrier for the entire bicycle.

An insulated closed balcony is one of the best places to store bicycles in an apartment, both in winter and summer. There is only one drawback - you will no longer be able to set up a full-fledged summer garden or create a workplace here. There are two ways to combine business and pleasure: hang your bike on special brackets (sold in bike shops) from the ceiling in a lying position, or mount it vertically on the wall.

Thus, as in the photo, you can compactly store 2-3 bicycles even on the smallest balcony, while almost not using its usable area. The vertical system is also suitable for summer - all that remains is to wipe the wheels.

Tip: Make sure that the bike is not exposed to direct sunlight: this can cause the protective varnish to deteriorate, the paint to peel off, and rubber and plastic to crack. Just cover the adjacent part of the window with a roller blind (if it is not possible to store the bike in a case).

When putting your bike away for the winter, you should clean it yourself from dirt and old grease, re-lubricate the parts (hinges, brakes, chain, speed switches), and wipe the metal parts with an oiled rag. In addition, you need to loosen the shock absorber springs and cables. If the bike is hanging, then you should deflate the tires a little, and if you stand, on the contrary, pump them up from time to time.

In many old houses, for example, Khrushchev-era apartments, apartment layouts included mezzanine cabinets in the hallway and next to the kitchen. Usually, new owners dismantle them during renovations and never return them (from an aesthetic point of view, this is a rather sad design). However, it makes sense to leave such a mezzanine for winter bicycle storage. Again, we are talking about storing a folding bike or arranging it element by element.

You can make room for a bicycle (with a vertical storage system) when designing a dressing room. By the way, by hanging a bicycle with its wheels up to the ceiling, its frame can be used as a bar for hangers, the trunk as a roof rail, and the handlebar handles as hooks for bags.

Or you can use the end of the corridor by installing a wardrobe there. Instead of washing machines in the photo, it’s easy to imagine a pair of bikes. On the Internet it is easy to find layouts of built-in cabinets for 2-4 bicycles.

Finally, there is special furniture for bicycles and sports equipment: it is either “screens” with shelves and hooks, or metal and wooden frames without walls (or only without doors): below are drawers and shelves, on top is a place for a bicycle. Thanks to the profile, such a cabinet looks light, but at the same time complete. If you have a spacious hallway or a large technical vestibule in front of the apartment, we recommend this design.

Alas, not every apartment has space for a closet or in the closet for a bicycle. You can use walls. Of course, in most cases, a wall arrangement is only suitable for winter storage of a clean bicycle, but there are options for out-of-season storage as well.

It is best to find a place for fastenings near the front door so as not to drag dirt into the apartment.

Important: Do not place the bicycle near a radiator or electric convector - the heat will “dry” the rubber and damage the protective varnish on the frame.

Mounts for vertically positioning a bicycle are different: hooks, brackets, hangers, shelves, baskets, racks - for one and two units. They are sold in bike shops and online stores, but these are often easy to make.

When designing a bicycle mount, expect that it must support its weight plus 5 kg, that is, for an adult model, a minimum of 20 kg. The mounts must be mounted so that there is at least 15 cm from the bicycle wheels to the floor, for ease of cleaning.

Shelves can be made in different designs - for books, flowers, hats.

If you have a ladies' or sports bike with a slanted frame, you can install it on a hanging rack: it will be a shelf for the wheels, and you can store shoes or magazines inside.

Another mounting method is vertical. There are also different suspensions here: by the wheel (not very recommended - the disc may be deformed), by the frame and by the steering wheel. The bicycle can be hung parallel to the wall.

And you can - perpendicularly. In this case, it will be convenient to use columns and other architectural protrusions. It looks impressive and allows you to zone the room.

See if you have any “dead” zones in your apartment that are never used. This could be a niche between the wall and the closet, a gap between the wall and the sofa, or 20 cm between the wall and the door, enough to accommodate a thin sports bike (especially if you remove the handlebars and wheels). For vertical fastenings, any door is suitable (for example, to a closet), but so that it opens at the same time.

Tip: Provide stands for both wheels so as not to spoil the finish.

From an ergonomic point of view, placing the bike along the wall is, of course, advantageous, especially in a niche.

Another ergonomic option is to line up “walls”: for example, two vertically hung bicycles, with a rack or bookcase between them. A bicycle is a visually lightweight structure, so such walls do not look massive.

The roller ceiling suspension system is only suitable for high rooms, and in the domestic housing stock (standard high-rise buildings) is rather pointless. The only option for its use is, again, along the wall under the ceiling, as a more effective alternative to wall hooks.

How to fit into the interior.

A bicycle on the wall will inevitably attract attention and will either be an ally or a destroyer of the interior.

Be ironic: imagine the same bicycle on the wall, but in a large picture frame. This is no longer a storage space, but an installation. Designer wheel covers will also allow you to fit an alien mechanism into any interior. Knitted ones look especially touching.

If space allows, the bicycle can not be hung on the wall or hidden in a closet, but, on the contrary, placed in a visible place, turning it (in winter, for example) into a stand for flower pots - the baskets on the steering wheel and trunk seem to be created for this .

In a non-standard bathroom, you can even put your bike under the sink (a series of designer stands was even born from this idea). The basket is convenient for storing toilet paper or towels.

By the way, another designer series of furniture arose from the combination of a bicycle and a bar counter (found by request in a search engine) - a bicycle saddle became a bar stool. You can do it yourself.

Bicycle storage in the apartment

  • horizontal method;
  • in a vertical position;

  • vertical fastening in the form of special hooks;
  • racks;

  • turn the steering wheel 90°;
  • remove the front wheel;
  • unscrew the pedals from the connecting rods by screwing them in from the reverse side;

Storing a bicycle in an apartment

Due to rising fuel prices, many residents of megacities are switching from cars to bicycles. And there are more and more active recreation lovers. But with the advent of a two-wheeled friend, a new problem appears - storing a bicycle in an apartment if there is no separate garage. The question: where to store a bicycle implies different answers. Depending on the time of year: if it is autumn and winter, then it is necessary to remove the unit until the next season, and if it is a warm period, then there is a need to leave the “friend” somewhere after cycling. In this article we will look at several interesting ideas for storing a “bike” at home, so do not rush to exchange such useful and exciting cycling for chess if you do not have a garage.

Important storage rules

Before deciding where to store your bike, you need to consider the basic rules and learn how to store a bike. Listen to the following recommendations from equipment manufacturers:

  1. Low temperatures (below 0 degrees), high humidity and sudden temperature changes have a negative impact on bicycle parts. Therefore, in winter, you cannot place equipment in an unheated vestibule or on an unglazed balcony.
  2. Direct sunlight damages rubber and plastic parts, so you need to store your bike on the balcony in a case.
  3. If the bicycle is being stored for a long time, for example, for the winter or while leaving, then follow these steps:
    • Clean the equipment from dust and dirt.
    • Clean the parts from old grease.
    • Lubricate brakes, joints, and shifters.
    • Wipe all metal parts with an oily rag to prevent corrosion.
    • Lower the shock absorber springs.
    • Loosen each of the spring mechanisms.
    • Lubricate the tires with special silicone glue so that they do not dry out during storage.
    • If you store your bike in a standing position, inflate the tires to protect them from deformation.
    • Cover the bicycle frame with a layer of rags.

Basic winter storage methods

Prudent outdoor enthusiasts think about storing their bike long before purchasing. And this is correct, because the folding mechanism of the “bike” will save you from many problems: the unit can easily be placed in a folded state in a standard pantry or a standard mezzanine located above the front door, and such a model will not take up much space on the balcony.

Important! When choosing equipment, remember: in terms of corrosion, an aluminum frame is preferable to a steel one, and the absence of hydraulic lines, such as brakes, forks, will not allow them to suffer from wintering in cold conditions.

Let's look at the main places where the “bike” is stored - both at home and outside the home.

Ideally, it would be good not to bring your bike home at all, so as not to dirty the floor and walls after a walk, at least during the cycling season. If stairwells are not suitable for storing two-wheeled vehicles, then look for like-minded people and rent a garage together, preferably a warm one, in order to store “bikes” not only in summer, but also in winter. Some underground parking lots also offer such winter storage services.

Important! As an option, you can contact the management company; in some HOAs there is the possibility of collective storage of two-wheeled vehicles in the attic from autumn to spring. You can, of course, take a duplicate of the keys to the basement, but increased humidity from communications will negatively affect the equipment - it will begin to rust.

At the entrance

It is very convenient to store a bicycle on the staircase - dirt does not penetrate into the house, and equipment is always at hand. One problem is the neighbors, for whom bicycles and strollers prevent them from carrying furniture and dirty their collective property, and are simply annoying!

Important! The most powerful argument that prevents placing a “wheeled friend” in the entrance is fire safety requirements, because the fire inspection has everything clearly prescribed: evacuation routes must be clear, and any obstacle is a violation and a fine. In addition, the entrance takes a leading place in the number of bicycle thefts; sometimes even the thickest chain is not a guarantee of the safety of property.

But if the entrance is guarded and you are lucky with your neighbors, then you can use a common area for storing a bicycle.

Important! Choose the most remote and least visited places in the entrance, and to securely fix your “two-wheeled friend” in place, use vertical mounts or hooks so as not to interfere with cleaning the staircase.

How to store a bicycle on the balcony?

Most fans of this technology are firmly convinced that the balcony is the only place where you can store a bicycle in an apartment, but there are several nuances:

  • An open balcony is only suitable for summer “rest” of a bike, and this is not an option if you imagine how you will roll a dirty bike across the entire apartment.
  • An insulated closed balcony is suitable for storing your equipment - both in winter and in summer.

Many craftsmen think about the issue of storing a bicycle on the balcony, coming up with special devices:

  • Rack and cabinet-like structures with drawers and niches.
  • Shelves with built-in fasteners.
  • Hooks and brackets.
  • Cyclos mounts.
  • Special racks.

Determine for yourself which bicycle storage on the balcony will be more convenient for you, based on the following possibilities:

  1. Most devices are designed for hanging the unit, since this storage method causes less harm to tires and is more efficient in using free space: there is always some space left on the floor for storing other useful things.
  2. Pieces of cabinet furniture with bicycle racks can always be selected taking into account the design of the room. Cabinet furniture always has shelves on which it is convenient to store things for cycling and more. Furniture that is placed perpendicular to the walls is suitable even for narrow balconies.
  3. Special racks that are mounted on the wall are usually designed for several bicycles. The equipment is located along the wall, one above the other. This design is reliable, simple and space-saving. The only thing that needs to be taken into account when using such a rack is that the width of the wall must be greater than the length of the vehicle. If there is not enough space, then disassemble the bicycles and store them folded in covers.
  4. Very practical for storing a bicycle in an apartment are a variety of mounts built into the shelves. However, it should be taken into account that the frame of the equipment must be placed on the shelves only horizontally, which imposes some restrictions on the owners. But shelves always fit into any design solution.
  5. The Cyclos mount is compact and looks like a flower pot. The mount is available in several colors and has a very interesting appearance. The main advantage of this mount is the ability to store the bike at any desired angle.
  6. Of course, the simplest option, accessible even to a teenager, is a bicycle suspended on hooks. But it doesn’t look as stylish and beautiful as the methods described above.

Important! Regardless of which method you prefer, consider these additional recommendations for storing a bicycle in an apartment:

  • Make sure that the sun's rays do not fall on the equipment, as the protective varnish may crack, the paint may peel off, and the plastic and rubber may become deformed. If it is not possible to store the bike in a case, then use a special cover or simply cover the adjacent part of the glass with a roller blind (cover it with foil).
  • If the balcony is so small that you cannot use any of the above methods, then partially disassemble the bicycle: remove the front wheel and turn the handlebars in the same plane as the entire structure.

How to store a bicycle in an apartment?

The question of how to store a bicycle at home worries many sports fans. Let's consider various options for placing transport in the warm season.

In the hall

Another place to store a bicycle at home that immediately comes to mind is the hallway. There may be the following options:

  1. If you have a large hallway, you can simply place the vehicle against the wall. However, in this case there will be a problem with cleaning the floors or the ability to open the doors wide.
  2. It is better to use a vertical or horizontal option for hanging a bicycle. If you choose a vertical storage system, then hanging the bike with its wheels up, the frame can be used as a hanger bar.
  3. Attach the product to the wall or to the ceiling if the hallway is small.
  4. If the hallway is large, then make a special cabinet for transport, even without doors, but with shelves: place a bicycle in one section, and accessories for it in the other: a pump, lubricants, tools, a helmet, etc.

In the corridor

Corridors can be different - both in area and in the length of the walls, so there is enough room for imagination. You can use various openings, niches, walls and ceilings, even the end of the corridor, by installing a wardrobe for a vehicle there.

Important! Find a storage place close to the front door so as not to pollute the apartment when you bring your equipment home after a bike ride.

People for whom a bicycle is not just a means of transportation, but a principle of life, an ideology, do not particularly think about where to put a bicycle in their apartment. This could be a hallway, or even a bedroom.

Important! You should not store your bike near a heating radiator or electric convector, as excess heat will deteriorate the protective varnish on the frame and dry out the rubber.

If you decide to share a room with a bicycle, then make sure that it fits harmoniously into the style and interior.

Let's look at some interesting ideas for storing your bike:

  • Use of wall mounts. When storing equipment in an apartment, you can use two opposing options:
    1. Complete match of the color of the bike and the overall color scheme of the interior.
    2. A radical contrast in color schemes. In this case, the two-wheeled piece of furniture will become the focal point of the entire room.
  • Use vertical space, provided the ceilings are high enough.
  • Building “walls”. For example, between two vertically hung bicycles, place a bookcase or shelving unit.
  • Turn a bicycle into a necessary piece of furniture, for example, into a stand for flower pots: you can put the baskets on the trunk or hang them on the handlebars.
  • Decorate the room in a sporty style. Draw a pattern on the wall along the outline of the vehicle using contrasting paint, and attach hooks for storing a bicycle. Place other sports accessories nearby - as a result, the room will acquire a sporty style and will look very bright.
  • Special furniture for bicycles. Furniture for two-wheelers and sports equipment consists of “screens” with hooks and shelves. Wooden or metal frames are made without walls or without doors, with boxes for equipment at the bottom, and space for a bicycle at the top. This cabinet looks easy thanks to its profile.
  • Use the “dead” areas of the room, for example, between the wall and the closet or the gap between the wall and the sofa. Even 20 cm is enough between the wall and the door to accommodate a thin sports bike. You can remove the steering wheel and wheels for this purpose.
  • On the ceiling. The roller suspension system is only suitable for rooms with high ceilings.

Important! When decorating the interior, use all your imagination and irony, for example, you can place your “two-wheeled friend” in a large frame, like a family member, or use designer covers to fit it into the interior; knitted accessories look especially touching and homely.

Where to store a bicycle in a small apartment?

The optimal solution for small apartments would be to purchase a folding version of the equipment, which can be stored in any closet or in the free space behind the sofa.

When storing a bicycle for a long time in a small apartment, you can use a mezzanine or any niche. To save space, it is recommended to make the equipment more compact by removing several elements:

Important! The steering wheel can not be removed, but can be turned 90 degrees. Move the pedals so that they “look” inward. A bicycle disassembled in this way will reduce the footprint by half.

The compact structure obtained as a result of manipulation can also winter under the bed in a special case or in a closet.

Important! Don't forget about the mezzanine cabinets in the hallway. If you did not dismantle them during the renovation, then use the mezzanine for winter storage of a bicycle in a small apartment.

Special mounts

Once you choose a place to store your two-wheeler, think about special mounts that will help you hang your bike securely and comfortably without damaging the vehicle's parts. In addition, it is very important that the mount is safe for all family members and does not reduce the space of the room too much.

Let's look at the main fasteners:

  • Hanging shelf for vertical mounting. These hangers are made of wood. You can buy them at a bike shop or make them yourself. A bicycle is hung on a shelf by its frame, and several models of transport can be hung on one such shelf. The shelves can be of different shapes, but due to the fact that the hole for the frame is made at an angle, the bicycle will be securely fastened. Such bicycle hangers will not only fit perfectly into the interior of any room, but will also serve as a place to store small items.
  • Metal hooks attached to the wall. One of the main advantages of such mounts is that they can be folded against the wall when not needed (if the “bike” is actively used). You can hang the whole family's transport on hooks if you place them at different levels: some higher, others lower. The disadvantage of this type of fastening is that you cannot hang a ladies’ bicycle or “bike” with a beveled frame on the hooks.
  • Hanging on special bike hooks. On such mounts, the bicycle is suspended by the wheels in a vertical position. It is better to place transport in niches, between furniture or behind the door in the hallway. The disadvantage of this mount is that the bike needs to be lifted high, and this is difficult for teenagers and women.

Important! With this storage method, a stand for the rear wheel is necessary to avoid damaging the wall surface.

  • Special brackets. To store your bike vertically in your apartment, use brackets that can be attached to both the wall and the ceiling.
  • Metal stands and holders. Typically, such racks are made of metal, but some craftsmen can make such a mount from wood.
  • Roller ceiling suspension system. The bicycle is suspended on cables from the ceiling. The transport is secured to the floor and then lifted upward using cables. This option requires either high ceilings or a place in the corner where it is difficult to reach. The reliability of such fastening will depend not only on the quality and reliability of the ceiling, but also on the system itself and the quality of its installation.

With skillful organization of space in the apartment, you can always find exactly the place for your “two-wheeled friend” in which he will be comfortable, and you will be calm not only for the bicycle, but also for all household members.

The issue of bicycle storage is very acute for city residents. The lack of equipped bicycle parking with limited access and small living space force the use of very unpopular storage methods. Some throw their bicycles onto the street, others into the entrance, after which they grieve over the loss and read voraciously. In fact, there are a lot of storage options.

Storage outside the apartment

Stroller

Not the best, but acceptable option is to leave the bicycle in a specially equipped so-called “stroller”, the key to the lock of which is held by only a few people. At least there he will not disturb other residents of the house and will not contradict fire regulations regarding free access to apartments. True, you can find such places mainly in new houses, and if you live in an old house, then you will have to store your bike in the apartment. And this is the best option of all possible.

Garage

If you have a garage on your property, then you can only be envied. I walked from home to the garage, took the bike, rode it, put it back, lubricated it, and cleaned it there. Ideal for the bike, but not for you. Especially if you need to go somewhere urgently, and the bicycle is used as a means of transport. After all, the journey to the garage takes time and it is unlikely to be located under the windows of your apartment. Still, the most convenient option is to always keep the bike “on its side” so that if something happens you can quickly use it.

Balcony

In addition to apartments, most houses have balconies. To avoid constantly clinging to the handlebars of your bicycle when walking around the house, you can put it on the balcony. It is very good if it is glazed. If not, cover the bike with at least an oilcloth so that it is protected from the rain.

However, not everyone can boast of having a balcony in their apartment. Or maybe you organized a recreation area there with a beautiful view of the yard and the neighboring house? Then you will have to share your living space with your bicycle.

Storage in the apartment

Hallway

If you have a large hallway, you can leave it there, you just need to lay an oilcloth, a piece of linoleum or newspaper under the wheels in advance. The same goes for storage in the room. You won't get anything dirty if you take care in advance about the surface on which you will place the bike. If you were returning home in the rain and got your bike dirty, you can leave it in the entrance for 5 minutes so that most of the water and dirt can drain off, after which you must remove the traces, after all, you are a neat and cultured person.

If you have a studio apartment with an area of 21 sq.m., then manufacturers have come up with a lot of ways for you to attach a bicycle to the wall or fit it organically and functionally into the space of the apartment.

Hook in the wall, hook on one wheel

Allows you to secure your bike to the wheel. It is advisable to mount it as close as possible to an unused corner in the apartment, because the bicycle will still take up some space. The good thing about hooks is that you can store several bikes in a relatively small area.

Hook in the wall, hook on the upper frame tube

It is installed in such a way that the bicycle can be suspended from the top tube of the frame. A larger area of the wall will be occupied, but the bicycle will stick out from the wall less than in the case of hanging it by the wheel.

Ceiling mount

The ceilings in most apartments are not very high, so you will still have to identify a corner that you rarely go near. But under the bicycle there may be a chest of drawers, a table or something else.

There is an option for attaching it to a hook in the ceiling, again you will need a secluded corner.

"Hanger"

In order not to make unnecessary holes in the wall, they came up with such a wonderful thing. The vertical beam rests against the wall, due to which the structure stands very firmly and does not fall. Agree, it looks good, it takes up the same amount of space as wall hooks.

Functional fastenings that complement the interior

There's a whole bunch of options here. You can fit a bicycle into your interior by hanging it on a bookshelf.

How do you like this option?

An excellent option would be to mount it to a wall in the form of a stem and a road handlebar. This is wonderful, you must agree.

In addition to the places where you need to store your bike, there are places where it is highly not recommended to store it.

1. First of all, you should not leave your bicycle on the landing, because this is the most delicious option for a thief. Looking at the statistics of bicycle thefts, you will see that at least 95% are committed from the entrances of houses.

3. An unglazed balcony in the off-season and in winter is not the best place to store a bicycle, especially if it is equipped with hydraulic brakes and an oil fork. In this case, temperature changes are detrimental, due to which the properties of materials can change (for example, the oil scraper rubbers will “tann” more intensely, which can lead to leaks or improper operation of the mechanisms).

The lack of special parking for two-wheeled vehicles and small living space are the reasons for the search and use of unpopular methods of storing bicycles. There are three optimal solutions for keeping them in a cramped home.

Storing a bike in a closet

You can hide your two-wheeled friend at home in a special closet, which is built into the wall on the balcony or in the hallway. Additional shelves also allow you to store construction tools, spare parts or other things inside.

The size of the storage will depend on the size of the bike and the position in which you intend to store it. For example, if the wheels are on eccentrics rather than nuts, then the cabinet can be made narrow and compact, since the bicycle can be easily disassembled and folded inside. For vehicles whose wheels are held on by nuts, the storage space will have to be made full-size. There are hooks inside on which the frame is hung. Storing a bicycle in a small apartment involves the following placement methods:

  1. Horizontal. There are two separate wide shelves, one of which is removed, freeing up space and placing the vehicle horizontally.
  2. Vertical. The bike is attached to the wall of a narrow cabinet in the hallway using special brackets.
  3. On special shelves. To do this, order a storage cabinet with designated niches for two-wheeled vehicles.
  4. In the closet. Bulky bikes are placed in the outerwear compartment, and one closet can accommodate two bikes at once if placed next to each other.

The main advantage of keeping a bike in a closet is that it does not spoil the interior with its appearance, but is out of sight.

However, some models do not fit into closets or small closets, so they will have to be partially disassembled each time - this is especially inconvenient for those who like to ride frequently.

On the wall

Mounting a bike has a number of benefits, including saving space and the unique, stylish look it brings to a room. The disadvantages of this method are the high risk of staining the walls with dirt from wheels and other parts of the structure. You can avoid the latter if, after returning home, you leave the “iron horse” in the hallway for a while, lay down a newspaper that will absorb fresh dirt, and wipe the handles with a damp cloth. You can organically fit a bicycle into the space of a small apartment in the following ways:

  1. Hook onto one wheel using a hook on the wall. The hook is attached next to an unused corner of the apartment, since transport takes up a certain space and will interfere with activities.
  2. Hook onto the top tube of the frame using a wall hook. The mount is placed so that the bike can be hung from the frame. In this case, most of the wall will be occupied, but the bicycle will not stick out much into the room.
  3. Hanger mount. This option helps to avoid the need to make extra holes in the walls. The vertical beam is pressed against the walls, so that the structure holds tightly and does not fall. This device looks stylish and takes up as much space as hooks.

In addition to the described mounts, there are the following bicycle storage systems:

  • hanging on a bookshelf (you can purchase it at a furniture store or make it yourself; in this case, it is possible to hang several bikes from it by the frame at once);
  • installation under the sink (if there is a lot of space under the sink, the bike can be placed there, using a basket for storing towels or other hygiene items).

On the ceiling

This method of storing vehicles is rarely used, since the ceiling height in standard houses is not enough to accommodate a bike: even children can hit their heads on it when passing by. This is the main disadvantage of such a mount. In addition, if the ceiling structure is not strong enough and the bike is heavy, then there is always a risk of collapse.

Methods for securing two-wheeled vehicles for small apartments:

  1. On brackets. The bracket is screwed into the ceiling using strong bolts. The bike frame is suspended from this mount.
  2. On a cable. The mechanism operates on the principle of a winch, which can be fixed in any convenient place in the apartment. In this case, the bicycle is mounted on the floor and then raised using cables.
  3. On hooks. The principle is the same as when mounting it on a wall, you just need to choose a corner in the apartment where you rarely walk (it’s optimal to hang the vehicle above a chest of drawers or other furniture to save space).
