A temperamental and courageous Spanish gypsy helps smugglers. History of the opera Carmen

"Carmen"- a short story by the French writer Prosper Merimee about the passionate love of the Basque Jose for the gypsy Carmencita. The robber life, customs and culture of the Spanish gypsies are described in detail. Jose demanded complete submission from Carmen, but Carmen, a freedom-loving gypsy, refused to submit at the cost of her own life.

Chapter 1

The narrator, an archaeologist by profession, goes to Cordoba to establish the location of Munda, the city where Julius Caesar won one of his victories. On the elevated part of the Kachen Plain he is attacked by thirst. He finds a stream that leads him to a picturesque lawn, where the archaeologist meets a young man of average height. The stranger at first frightens the hero with his ferocious appearance and blunderbuss, but then the author offers him a Havana cigar and a conversation begins between them.

The stranger shows himself to be a good horse expert. The narrator treats him to ham. The young man greedily pounces on the treat. The hero’s guide, Antonio, who had been chatting all the way, becomes silent and tries to stay away from the ferocious young man.

Having learned that the narrator plans to spend the night in Voronya Venta, the Spaniard offers to join him. On the way to the overnight stay, the archaeologist tries to find out from the stranger whether he is the famous robber Jose Maria, but the latter prefers to remain silent.

The owner of the Crow Venta calls the stranger Don Jose. After dinner, at the request of the narrator, the robber plays the mandolin and sings a national Basque song. Antonio tries to call his master for a private conversation in the stable, but the narrator decides to show his trust in Don Jose and does not go anywhere. He spends the night with the robber, but waking up from the itch, he carefully makes his way out into the street, where he learns from the conductor that he wants to hand over Jose Navarro to the lancers and receive two hundred ducats for it. The narrator warns the robber about betrayal. Jose Navarro leaves the Crow Venta.

Chapter 2

The narrator spends several days in Cordoba. He gets acquainted with the monastery manuscripts and walks along the city embankment. One evening the hero meets the beautiful gypsy Carmen, the most famous witch in the area. He invites her to a cafe for ice cream, after which he takes her home, where the girl reads fortunes for him with cards. Suddenly, a stranger wrapped in a brown cloak appears in the room, whom the narrator recognizes as Don Jose. Carmen, in the gypsy dialect, passionately convinces the robber to do something. From her gestures, the narrator guesses that we are talking about his murder. Don Jose refuses. He leads the hero to the bridge. At the hotel, the narrator discovers a gold watch is missing, but does nothing to find it.

After spending several months in Andalusia, the hero returns to Cordoba. One of the monks of the Dominican monastery happily greets the archaeologist. He informs him about the capture of Jose Navarro, during which the narrator's gold watch was found, and invites the hero to proceed to the chapel to talk with the bandit, who is a local landmark and of interest to any researcher of Spain.

The narrator offers his help to the robber. Don Jose asks to serve mass for him and Carmen, and also to give his silver icon to a woman in Pamplona.

Chapter 3

The next day the hero visits Don Jose again. The latter tells him his story. José Navarro was born in Elizondo, in the Bastan Valley. He bore the surname Lizarrabengoa and was a purebred Basque and Christian. In his youth, Don José joined the Almann cavalry regiment, where he quickly became a corporal. While standing guard at a Seville tobacco factory, he met Carmen, who was the first to flirt with the young cavalryman, offended by the lack of attention to her person. On the same day, a gypsy woman slashed the face of one of the factory workers with a knife. Don Jose, summoned by the sergeant, was to accompany her to prison. On the way, Carmen began to persuade the young man to give her the opportunity to escape. In exchange, she offered a piece of bar lacha - a magical magnetic ore that can bewitch any woman. Realizing that bribery would not achieve anything, Carmen switched to Basque. Don Jose succumbed to the gypsy’s seduction and decided to help the “countrywoman” escape, deliberately falling backward from a light blow from the girl’s fist.

For the offense committed, the cavalryman was sent to prison for a month. There he kept thinking about Carmen. One day the jailer brought him Alkalin bread from his “cousin,” in which he found a small file and two piastres. Don Jose did not run away. After his release, he was demoted to ordinary soldiers. Standing guard at the door of the young, wealthy colonel, Don Jose again met Carmen, who had arrived with other gypsies for a social evening to entertain the public. Before leaving, the girl hinted to the former cavalryman that she could be met at Triana's food store, near Lilyas Pastier.

Carmen goes for a walk around Seville with Don José. The soldier returns the money sent to her in a loaf of bread. Carmen buys food and sweets with them. She brings Don Jose to a house belonging to some old woman and spends the whole day with him. The next morning, the girl explains that she has paid the soldier in full and offers to break up.

The next meeting with Carmen takes place at Don José, when he is guarding the gap through which smugglers deliver their goods at night. The gypsy woman offers the soldier a night of love in exchange for letting the bandits through. Don Jose does not agree at first, but after thinking that Carmen could go to his corporal, he decides to commit malfeasance. A date on Candelijo Street turns into a quarrel with reconciliation.

Don Jose does not know where Carmen is for a long time. He often visits Dorothea, an old woman in whose house he met a gypsy. One day he finds Carmen there with the lieutenant of his regiment. A quarrel breaks out between the young people. Don Jose kills the lieutenant. Carmen dresses him up as a peasant and takes him to an unfamiliar house. The next morning, the girl reports that the hero has no other way but to take the path of a smuggler himself. Don José likes his new life, in which he has money, a lover and the respect of his comrades.

From the head of the Dancaire gang, Don Jose learns that Carmen managed to free her Roma (husband), Garcia the Crooked, from the Tarifa prison. The gypsy, scary in appearance, turned out to be a real devil at heart - without a twinge of conscience, he shot one of his comrades who was preventing him from retreating from the cavalrymen.

Carmen is sent to Gibraltar on gypsy business. In the Sierra Ronda, Don José meets the bandit José Maria. The connection with Carmen is cut off. Don Jose, at the insistence of his comrades, goes in search of the gypsy. He finds Carmen in the company of an English officer. The gypsy urges him not to be jealous, content with the title of her “minchorro” - lover or quirk. She persuades Don Jose to kill the Englishman and Garcia. The robber refuses to kill the gypsy by accident. He starts a quarrel with him at the fire and takes his life in a fair fight. Carmen agrees to become Don José's romi.

Life together with the jealous Don Jose is difficult for the freedom-loving Carmen. After killing Dancaire and being seriously wounded, the robber invites the gypsy to move to the New World and begin to lead a new, honest way of life. The girl makes him laugh. Don Jose returns to his old trade.

Carmen cheats on her husband with picador Lucas. She offers Don José either to profit from his money or to take him into the gang in exchange for the killed smugglers. During this period, the robber meets the narrator.

Carmen continues to cheat on Don José with Lucas. The robber asks the gypsy to leave with him to the New World. He says he's tired of killing her lovers. Next time, Don Jose promises to kill Carmen herself. The gypsy sees her fate in this and refuses the trip. She tells Don José several times that she does not love him and will not live with him. In a fit of rage, the robber kills the gypsy woman. He buries her in the forest and surrenders to the authorities.

Chapter 4

The narrator describes in detail the places of settlement, occupation, appearance and character traits of the Spanish gypsies, who are characterized by loyalty to their fellow tribesmen, hospitality, lack of affiliation with any religion, and a desire for fraud. The author calls India the homeland of the gypsies. The narrator emphasizes the linguistic commonality and diversity of nomadic peoples living in Spain, Germany and France.

Her habanera - a song of free love - sounds like a challenge to Jose, and the flower thrown at his feet promises love. The arrival of Jose's fiancee, Micaela, makes him forget about the daring gypsy for a while. He remembers his native village, home, mother, and indulges in bright dreams. And again Carmen breaks the peace. This time she is the culprit of a quarrel at the factory, and Jose must take her to prison. But the gypsy's charms are omnipotent. Conquered by them, Jose breaks the order and helps Carmen escape.

His life is full of worries, the fight in the arena is dangerous, but the hero’s reward is sweet - glory and the love of beauties. It's getting dark. Customers leave the tavern. Under the cover of darkness, smugglers gather for a risky trade. This time Carmen refuses to go with them. She is waiting for Jose. The sergeant arrives, but the joy of their meeting is short-lived. The war bugle calls the dragoon to the barracks. In his soul, passion fights with duty. A quarrel breaks out between lovers. Suddenly, Zuniga, Jose’s boss, appears. He hopes for Carmen's favor. In a fit of jealousy, Jose draws his saber. The military oath has been violated, the path to returning to the barracks is cut off. Jose stays with Carmen.

But Carmen no longer loves him, the gap between them cannot be avoided. What will the cards tell her? She predicted happiness for her friends, but fate does not promise joy for Carmen herself: she read her death sentence in the cards. With deep sorrow she reflects on the future. Suddenly Escamillo arrives - he is in a hurry to go on a date with Carmen. Jose blocks his way. Jealousy and indignation flare up in his soul. Carmen stops the rivals' fight. At this moment, Jose notices Micaela, who, overcoming her fear, came to the smugglers’ camp to take Jose away. Frasquita and Mercedes warn Carmen about the impending danger: Jose is constantly watching her. But Carmen does not listen to them, she rushes to the bullfight. Jose stops her. He addresses his beloved tenderly and lovingly. But Carmen is inexorable: everything is over between them. “I was born free, and I will die free,” she proudly throws in Jose’s face. In a fit of anger, he stabs Carmen to death. By death she asserts her freedom.

Carmen (French: Carmen) was written by Prosper Mérimée in 1845. It consists of 4 chapters. It was this short story that served as inspiration for composer Georges Bizet when creating his immortal.

The short story Carmen served as inspiration for the creation of a stunning opera by Georges Bizet

The novella begins with the search by one scientist (in whose features the author himself is discernible) in the fall of 1830 for the site of the last triumphant Spanish battle of Julius Caesar. Fleeing from the heat, he hides in a gorge, where he meets a clever fellow with blond hair. He offers to share his meal with him and smoke. They will continue their journey together, but the scientist’s guide keeps making signs to him, which he ignores. All three stop for the night in the same house: their companion quickly falls asleep, but the scientist cannot fall asleep. Going outside, he notices a guide about to inform the soldiers about the whereabouts of the robber Jose Navarro, for whose capture a reward has been promised. A scientist warns his companion of impending danger. After this they part as friends.

The scientist continues his research in the library of a monastery in Cordoba, walking in the evenings along the river bank, where one day he meets a dazzling woman with jasmine flowers in her hair. After treating her to a cigarette, he finds out that she is a gypsy named Carmen. He accompanies her to her house, where she invites him to tell fortunes. The fortune telling is interrupted by the appearance of a man in a cloak, who begins an argument with the gypsy woman in an unfamiliar language. The scientist recognizes the stranger as his friend Jose. He takes the guest out of the house, showing the way to his hotel. The scientist discovers that the gold watch that Carmen liked so much is missing. Distressed, he leaves the city, where he visits again a few months later. He learns that Jose Navarro has been arrested and will soon be executed. The scientist visits the prisoner, where he listens to his confession.

José's story in Carmen

It turns out that Jose belongs to an old noble Basque family. After a knife fight with one of his compatriots, he was forced to flee and join a dragoon regiment, where he rose to the rank of brigadier. One day, standing guard at a Seville tobacco factory, he meets Carmen for the first time, who became his passion, pain and the cause of his imminent death. She goes to work with other girls, and two hours later José is tasked with taking her to prison as the instigator of a quarrel who disfigured the face of another factory worker with a knife. On the way to prison, Carmen lies to Jose, persuading him to help her escape. He believes her tales and arranges an escape, which is why he loses his title and ends up in prison for a month. Carmen sends him a loaf of bread with a file inside and some money, but he refuses to run. After leaving prison, he serves as a simple soldier. One day, standing as a sentry at his colonel's house, he sees a carriage with gypsies who have arrived to entertain the guests. Carmen makes an appointment with Jose and gives him a happy day and night, after which he informs him that they are now even. Jose looks for her in vain. He meets her again among the smugglers who want to pass through the hole in the wall, guarded by José. Carmen promises to spend the night with him, and he lets the smugglers through and becomes one of them himself. For some time he is happy next to her, until Crooked Garcia, Carmen’s ugly husband rescued from prison, appears in the squad. José kills his opponent in a duel and, according to gypsy customs, becomes Carmen's rom (or husband). He invites her to flee to America and establish a new life there, but she does not want to change her life. After some time, Jose learns about her passion for the matador Lucas. José takes Carmen to a secluded ravine, where he repeatedly asks to run away with him to America, but she replies that she no longer loves him and does not want to live with him, throwing the ring he gave him in his face. Jose, in anger, stabs her twice with a dagger, after which he buries her body in the forest, putting a ring and a cross there.

It was early autumn of 1830. One scientist, undoubtedly curious and enthusiastic, goes to the site of the last battle of the great Julius Caesar in order to find the ancient Munda. Along the way, he and his guide are forced to stop, the reason for which was the midday heat, forcing them to flee in the shade. They turn towards one gorge, but a convenient place to rest, located right next to the stream, is already occupied by someone: a blond man rises to meet them. In his gait one could discern not only strength, but also undoubted dexterity. and the face, on which one can note piercing eyes, looking proudly and confidently, betrayed wariness. Despite the obvious hostility of the stranger, the offer of the arrivals to share a meal with them, and then a good cigar, relieves the tension of the meeting. After rest, our scientist continues on his way together with his new acquaintance, while he does not pay any attention to the guide giving him signs. When evening comes, the travelers decide to stop for the night, choosing a place in a remote venta. After dinner, the new acquaintance, placing the blunderbuss next to him, immediately begins to snore, and the scientist, tormented by insomnia, goes out into the street. In the darkness of the night, he unexpectedly notices how his guide is quietly sneaking, and having asked what is the matter, the scientist learns that he decided to warn the lancers post that a certain Jose Navarro, a robber, was camping in Venta for the night, for his help in arresting whom they promised a reward two hundred ducats. The scientist does not wish his new acquaintance harm and warns him that he is in danger, which is why he imbues the hero with a feeling of true friendship.
Some time passes and our scientist continues his research in one of the libraries of the monastery located in Cordoba. In the evenings he walks and watches the sunset on the shores of Guadalquivir. During one of these walks, he is approached by a woman who was dressed as a grisette, short, young, with a charming figure and piercing slanted eyes. Her beauty, wild and unnatural, amazed our scientist. He treats her to a cigarette and the girl is provided. Her name was Carmen, she is a gypsy and can tell fortunes. The scientist asks to allow him to accompany the girl, and at the same time, to look at her unusual art. However, Carmen's stories about the future were unexpectedly interrupted by a man wrapped in a cloak, who, swearing, bursts into the house where his new acquaintance had recently brought the scientist. This man turns out to be a traveler saved by a scientist in recent times. After his conversation with Carmen, from which the scientist could not understand anything, since it was conducted, albeit emotionally, in a language unfamiliar to him, Jose takes the hero out into the street and shows him the direction to the hotel. Only here, our scientist suddenly discovers that his gold watch, which the girl really liked, has disappeared. Distressed, he leaves the city in the coming days.
Several months have passed. The scientist again comes to Cordoba, where he accidentally learns that Jose is already in prison and awaiting execution. The hero decides to go to his friend and listen to his story about life.
Arriving at the robber's prison, the scientist learned from Jose that he himself was Basque and was born into a family belonging to a noble family, ancient and respectable. His hometown was Elizondo, from where he fled after a fight.
Jose enlists in a dragoon regiment. In the army he showed diligence and was soon able to rise to the rank of brigadier. One day he was assigned to a guard guarding a tobacco factory in Seville. It was here that he met Carmen, whom he fell in love with the moment he first saw the girl going to work. Two hours pass and Jose is called to the factory, where he was supposed to arrest Carmen, who had fallen in his heart, for severely cutting one worker’s face with a knife. When Jose led her, she told him that she was also from the Basques, and in this city she felt very, very lonely, everyone bullied her because they considered her a stranger, which is why she grabbed a knife in order to protect herself and her dignity. Of course, she lied, but he believed her and let her go. For this, it’s true, he was imprisoned for a month and demoted, but then he did not regret what he did.
In prison, he receives a gift from Carmen - bread in which a file was hidden, a gold coin and two piastres. However, his sense of military duty and honor do not allow him to decide to escape, and he returns to his unit as a private. One day he stood guard at the house of his colonel. In the evening, a carriage arrived at the gate, in which the summoned gypsies arrived - there was some kind of holiday in the house. Among the gypsies, Jose unexpectedly notices his acquaintance, who makes an appointment with him and it was their happiest night. When they said goodbye, Carmen said that they were even, but at the same time admitted that she fell in love with him, but, as she noticed, a wolf and a sheep cannot get along side by side. Afterwards, he tried for a long time to find the missing girl, but his search was unsuccessful. When he was guarding the passage in the city wall, she appears again asking for help to guide the smugglers. Carmen promises to give Jose the night, and he breaks his oath. After this, Jose was happy for a long time, Carmen was affectionate with him, but suddenly a certain Garcia Crooked, so nicknamed for his exceptional ugliness, appears in the smuggling squad. He turned out to be Carmen's husband and she had been trying to get him out of prison for a long time.
Jose began to trade in smuggling and sometimes rob and kill travelers. One day, Carmen tells Jose that the next time they do their next thing, he could expose her husband to the bullets, but he does not agree and kills his opponent in a fair fight, challenging him to a duel, after which he officially becomes her husband. Only Carmen herself begins to get more and more tired of this love and Jose himself.
One day, Jose invited his beloved to change their lives and go to the New World, but she only laughed in response. A little more time passes and Jose learns that his Carmen had some kind of affair with the matador Lucas. Jose is very jealous and once again invites Carmen to America, but she refuses and declares that they still won’t be able to live together, and she lives very well in Spain. An enraged man takes his beloved to a remote gorge and again asks if she agrees to leave. However, stubborn Carmen says that she doesn’t want to live with him, and she won’t love him anymore either. Jose is furious, in a fit of anger he kills Carmen with a knife, after which he buries his beloved in the forest, putting a small cross and a ring in the grave.
At this point, the story of the unfortunate Jose ends, and we can observe how the author describes the customs and language of the gypsies in the subsequent part of the story.

There’s just more than enough!

I forgot, my friend, you are engaged,
devoted to the bride with all my soul!
It's a shame, but you're doomed
be before the wedding
a victim of honor!
You are truly a saint among us!

Jose

Dear Lieutenant, I don’t want to argue with you.
Here are the beauties from the factory before you without embellishment!
Here they are! See and judge for yourself.

(The factory bell rings. The square again fills with passers-by. Later, young people appear. The soldiers leave the guardhouse. Jose sits to the side and cleans his gun, not paying attention to those around him. The ringing of the bell fades.)

Young people

He gave us the day as a tribute
the bell is sad.
Here in the evening
we come with a prayer:
give it to a beggar
have mercy on the sinner,
have pity on the slave,
Mrs. Love!
Have pity on the slave
Mrs. Love!
Have pity on the slave!
Have pity on the slave!

We are deceived again and again,

Damn, there is smoke everywhere, everything is in smoke,

There's no point in believing in love

We are deceived again and again,

It's sad, my friend, but love -
the deception is pleasant.
Everything is like a dream,
I'm dreaming about you,
and love is only a dream!
In reality, it will evaporate like blue smoke!
Everything is like a dream,
and love is only a dream!
Let this dream last longer!
In the smoke, everything around is in the smoke,
as if in a fog, as if in a fog!
In smoke, everything around is in smoke!
Again everything around is in smoke, like in a fog, like in a fog, ah!
In the smoke, in the blue shroud
I again don’t understand what’s wrong with me!
Everything is in smoke, like in a fog, like in a fog!

Struck by passion
fall at my feet in prayer!

Female workers

Love is careless and capricious,
and we cannot avoid trouble.
In her game, he is called upon to become a victim.
any of us, me and you!

Young people and soldiers

We are called to become a victim of love, you and I!

People

Carmen

Today I'm captivated by love,
and tomorrow you, my friend.

People

And tomorrow you!

Carmen

Struck by passion
fall at my feet in prayer!

People

My friend!

Young people

Carmen, we are your humble servants!
Carmen, don't hide anything from us!
Be kind, call me
who is worthy of your love.

(Young people surround Carmen. She does not pay any attention to them. She approaches Jose and throws him a flower.)

Female workers

(laughing)
Love is careless and capricious,
and we cannot avoid trouble.
In her game, he is called upon to become a victim.
any of us, me and you!

(The factory bell rings. The workers leave, Carmen is with them. Jose looks after her in confusion. The square empties.)

Jose

(picking up a flower)
This look is a fiery abyss!
Strange flower...
With a gentle flame
its petals tremble...
The aroma knocks you off your feet
and intoxicating with hope!
What's wrong with me?
Isn't all this witchcraft?
There is no other way to explain it!

(Michaela appears.)

Michaela

Jose

Who called me?

Jose

(Hides the flower.)

Michaela

Your mother sends greetings to you.

Jose

How is she doing, tell me, Michaela!

Michaela

First, first thing
I have to write a letter
convey to you.

Jose

Very handy!

Michaela

And money from her
but that, Don Jose, is not all...
Not all...

Jose

Michaela

More... It just happened... More...
I have one important errand
mother gave...
Even though it is difficult,
I didn't dare refuse her...

Jose

Tell me, what's the matter, if it's not a secret?

Michaela

There's no secret here...
I can tell you everything
I have nothing to hide.
I met your mother in the chapel,
and together with her we walked home. She said:
“Ah, old age, the torment of impotence!
Legs are of little use.
And you are going to Seville.

my boy!
My dear son is serving there somewhere,
my boy!
Find him, darling
remind me once again
that I dream of meeting him,
that I pray for him day and night.
Let me kiss you, daughter
and let me convey with you
to my dear son
my mother’s kiss!”

Jose

I see salvation in him!

Michaela

Very happy about you.

Jose

I'm looking forward to it!

Michaela

Okay, Don Jose,
I will give this kiss to you now!

(Michaela stands on her tiptoes and kisses Jose like a mother.)

Jose

This is how my mother once kissed me!
Kindness is with me again
and the warmth of her lips!
Everything is as it was then, as it was then!
I am moved to tears.

came back and brought
rest for the weary soul!

Michaela

I did everything as I promised her,
and now the world of bright childhood dreams returned to him,
came back and brought
rest for the weary soul!

Jose and Michaela

The world of bright children's dreams
came back and brought
rest for the weary soul!

Jose

My god, I almost did
victim of the devil's spell!
Mother, you saved your child!
Your kiss instantly averted the misfortune,
tore my heart out of control
that power of witchcraft, the insidious power of evil!

Michaela

Victim of a spell? What are you about?
Reveal your secret
I will pray for you!

Jose

No no!..
Everything is fine, don't worry.
Tell me, how long will you stay with us?

Michaela

I'm going back to the village today.

Jose

I send greetings to my dear friends!
Years are no barrier to us with them.
Wherever I am, my native land
will always be my joy
and a cherished dream.
Maybe my mother is upset
I accidentally delivered.
My kiss is like an apology
tell her, please!

Michaela

You can be sure, Jose,
what a gentle hello
I'll give it back.

Jose

Oh, my mother, my earthly beginning!
Your kindness is with me
and the warmth of your lips!
Everything is as it was then, as it was then!
I am moved to tears.
Blissful world, the world of bright childhood dreams,
returned and brought it again
rest for the weary soul!

Michaela

I did everything as I promised her.
And now the world of bright childhood dreams returned to him,
who brought again
rest for the weary soul!

Jose

I'm reaching out to you again!

Michaela

I strive to see you again
warm up with your warmth!

Jose

Wonderland!

Jose and Michaela

Visions, dreams and dreams of childhood,
my soul is faithful to you!

Michaela

Oh no! I won’t bother you, I’d better leave.

Jose

Stay with me!

Michaela

No, it's not worth it.
This will be more convenient for both...
I'm ashamed of something in my soul...

Jose

Will you come later?

Michaela

Yes, Don Jose.

(José reads the letter silently. Michaela runs away.)

Jose

You're right, dear.
Only at home
I can be happy.
Michaela and I will be a very friendly couple.
Evil spells will not separate us!

(Loud noise in the factory, behind the scenes. Zuniga and the soldiers leave the guardhouse.)

Zuniga

I knew it!
Another scandal!

Female workers

(going on stage)
Guard! Guard! Oh, trouble, trouble!
Let them send soldiers to us here as soon as possible!
Let them pacify Carmen!
And also - Manuilita!
Let them pacify Carmen!
They deserve each other, that's a fact!
Of course it's Carmencita's fault,
she can't live without fighting!
What's the use of listening to them!

We'll tell you, sir!
Let us!
Let us!
Let us!
Let us!
Let us!
We are the essence...
We are the essence of things
We'll tell you!
We'll explain it to you!
We saw, sir,
we saw, sir,
How did this dispute arise?
Manuilita walked by
and said loudly,
what wouldn't hurt to buy?
give her a good donkey.
“Don’t fool the donkeys,”
Carmencita quipped here,
sit on the mop, Manuilita,
and fly to hell!
She answered her: “Where should I
keep up with you, sister!
I don't need to rush
A donkey will do just fine!”
"I'll lend it to you,
you can have fun riding!
At the same time, gain your mind
from my donkey!”
And then, damn them,
The scandal turned into a fight!
Yes Yes! Then, damn them,
A scandal turned into a fight!

Zuniga

Shout like you're at a market!
You should really say something!

(to Jose)
Listen, Jose, take two guys,
yeah find out soon
everything about this scandal!

Female workers

Carmen started it all!
No no! It wasn't like that!
Carmen started it all!
No no! It wasn't like that!
She's loosened her tongue!
No not like this!
Carmen can't live without fighting!

Zuniga

(to female workers)
Order for everyone to disperse!
We'll figure it out without you!

Female workers

Senor! Senor!
Senor! Senor!
What's the use of listening to them, sir!
Let us, let us!
We will tell you the essence of the matter!
Listen, sir!
We saw, sir,
How did this dispute arise?
What happened here is Carmencita’s fault!
No, Manuilita should be responsible for the fight!
Still Carmen!
Not her at all!
Who else but Carmen!
Not her at all!
Yes! No! Yes! No! Yes! No!
Yes! Yes! Yes! No! No! No!
Whose hands are at work here, everyone will say:
Carmen is bored of living without a fight!
Carmen started it all!
No! It was all wrong!
Carmen started it all!
No! It was all wrong!
This is Carmencita! That's right!
No no! Not this way!
Not at all like that!

(The soldiers disperse the women. They keep their distance. Carmen, accompanied by Jose and other soldiers, appears at the door of the tobacco factory.)

Jose

(to Zuniga)
It all started with a simple squabble,
I have to report to you
swearing, then knives.
Two gypsies fought...

Zuniga

Whose fault?

Jose

Carmensites.

Zuniga

(looking at Carmen)
Yes or no? What will she tell us?

Carmen

(grinning)
Tra la la la la la la la, cut me! Burn me!
I'm not afraid of anything!
Tra la la la la la la la, no knife, no fire,
and I laugh at you!

Zuniga

Stop singing songs, little bird!
You better answer my question quickly!

Carmen

Tra la la la la la la la, I have another one,
I love it!
Tra la la la la la la la, I will die, loving,
but I won’t reveal the secret!

Zuniga

(The women want to attack Carmen. She swings her arms threateningly. Jose holds her back. The soldiers disperse the women, pushing them off the stage. The women resist.)

Female workers

Put her behind bars!

Zuniga

(to Carmen)
However!
I see you really are a bully!

Carmen

Tra la la la la la la...

Zuniga

(About myself)
How annoying!
This beauty should be put in a punishment cell,
so that it would be discouraging to fight.

(to Jose)
Tie her hands tightly!

(Zuniga and the soldiers leave. Carmen, smiling, obediently extends her hands to Jose. He ties them with a rope.)

Carmen

Are we going to the pub?

Jose

No matter how it is!
Don't you want to go to jail?

Carmen

To tell the truth, not very much.

Jose

Alas! The lieutenant gave the order.

Carmen

That order
not for us.
And you're talking about him now
you'll forget!
Do me
nothing to do in prison
if you, Jose,
do you love me!

Jose

Carmen

Yes, Jose!
The flower I enchanted
It was not for nothing that I threw it to you!
Now you are in control, my friend,
love spells!

Jose

Stop your jokes!
You can't fool me!

Carmen

Seville is crowded in the evening
in the house of Lilyas Pastya.
There's a zucchini there
Manzanilla wine flows like a river in it,
there is fun and drunken happiness!
There, straining, the strings cry,
there is the clink of coins in the heat of passion,
it's not difficult to find me there,
there I dance for the guests.
You come, we'll sit next to you
and let's drink wine together!
We don't need to rush anywhere,
everything that should come true will come true!
I'm tired of an empty life,
I'm so tired of her!
The one I've been dreaming about for a long time,
My heart is waiting with excitement!
My heart is waiting for awakening,
The night is over, dawn is coming.
No shelter, no escape
We cannot escape fate!
I'm in Seville every evening
in the house of Lilyas Pastya.
There's a zucchini there

I will have a date with you there!

Jose

Shut up! I'm tired of your chatter!

Carmen

I apologize,
because I'm chatting
I'm breaking the order.
Under escort
The prisoner is obliged to remain silent.
But if the military regulations
will allow you to dream a little,
I will dream about
May you fall in love with me, my sergeant!

Jose

(excitedly)
Carmen!

Carmen

The officers loved me passionately -
I have to admit honestly.
Officer's love
I know her worth.
But what can you do?
I'm in love with the sergeant now!

Jose

Carmen, you're driving me crazy!
Will you repeat in freedom,
What draws you to the sergeant?
Oh, is it really me, Carmen, that sergeant?

Carmen

Jose

So we're together...

Carmen

We'll be with you.

Jose

(loosening the rope on Carmen's hands)
In that zucchini.

Carmen

Drink manzanilla
and dance seguidilla.

Jose

Carmen! Oh my god!

Carmen

Oh! I'm in Seville every evening
in the house of Lilyas Pastya!
There's a zucchini there
Manzanilla wine flows like a river in it!
Tra la la la la la...

(Zuniga returns and gives Jose the package.)

Zuniga

(to Jose)
I appoint you as the head of the convoy.

Carmen

(to Jose; quietly)
You'll go halfway with me,
I'll see you later
I'll push with my shoulder as much as I can...
You, Jose, will fall,
and I’ll quickly disappear.

(to Zuniga; laughing)
Love is careless and capricious,
and we cannot avoid trouble.
In her game, he is called upon to become a victim.
any of us, me and you!

(showing tied hands)
Today I'm captivated by love,
and tomorrow you, my friend,
overwhelmed by passion, you will fall
at my feet with a prayer!

(Two soldiers take Carmen under escort, Jose walks behind them. Women and young people gradually squeeze forward again. Carmen, crossing the square, pushes Jose. He falls. Carmen runs away. The workers, laughing loudly, surround Zuniga.)

ACT TWO

(Tavern of Lilhas Pasta. Carmen, Frasquita and Mercedes are sitting at the table with Zuniga and other officers. The gypsies dance to the sounds of guitars and tambourines. The dancing stops.)

Carmen

Not remembering the evil of the past day,
The evening breathes with crazy fun.
Candles flicker in the twilight,
and shadows dance on the wall.
A gypsy is not allowed to be sad.
Trust life carefree
and if fate so desires,
you sing, dance and drink wine -
It doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow!

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Tra la la la, tra la la la...

Carmen

The guitars are all vying
you, gypsy, are called to surrender
a rush of violence in a whirlwind of dance,
and you have no power over yourself!
And here comes the tambourine-sorcerer!
From threads of fiery passions
weaves patterned rhythms.
They are united with the gypsy soul,
they, gypsies, are in the blood, your blood!
Tra la la la, tra la la la...

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Tra la la la, tra la la la...

Carmen

You can't stop a gypsy from dancing.
I'd be crazy if it breaks up!
While the gypsy's heart is beating,
he won't stop dancing!
Spin faster, spin faster, gypsy!
The circle of life is a colorful booth!
Colors, masks, faces flash,
everything around is floating, everything is spinning!
This is a dance, your dance, gypsy!
Tra la la la, tra la la la...

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Tra la la la, tra la la la...

(Dancing follows, joined by Mercedes, Frasquita and Carmen.)

Frasquita

Friends, Pastya said...

Zuniga

Why is the old devil fussing about?

Frasquita

He said that the corregidor himself
He ordered us to disperse.

Zuniga

Alas! The drinking is over!

(to Frasquita)
Are we on the same path?

Frasquita

I must disappoint you.

Zuniga

(to Carmen)
And you, Carmen? What can you tell me?
Maybe I let you down?
Sorry.

Carmen

What are you talking about?

Zuniga

About your soldier
that I was punished...

Carmen

So, have you pacified your anger?

Zuniga

Your soldier is on the loose.

Carmen

Merciful is the law!
My deepest bow to you all!

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Our deepest bow to you all!

Choir

(behind the scenes)
Hello, brave bullfighter!
Hello, brave bullfighter!
Hello Escamillo!
Hello! Hello! Hello!

Zuniga

Hello to Grenada's favorite!
We are all very happy to meet you!
In honor of future victories
We need to drink wine!
And everyone has the same toast:
we drink to your success!

(Escamillo enters with his friends.)

Choir

To you, our friend Escamillo,
we all wish you success!
To you, our friend Escamillo,
we all wish you success!
Always! Always! Always! Always!

Escamillo

Your toast is glorious, and there is no doubt
a bullfighter is as brave as a soldier!
Eager to fight
without delay,
if the march of battle fanfare is trumpeted!
The circus is full. There's a bullfight here today.
The bull will be killed to the roar of the crowd.
And the viewer waits with a festive look
spectacles to relieve your boredom.
The “venerable” viewer is thirsty for blood.
Well, if you please, right here now
blood will be shed if you want!
Everything is for the viewer, everything is for you!

Yes, your time has come, bullfighter!
Challenge to fight
abandoned by fate!
Remember the young Spanish woman,
looking death in the eyes!

Your love is with you!

All

Your time has come, bullfighter!
Challenge to fight
abandoned by fate!

Carmen

Believe that love, your love is with you!

Morales, Zuniga and choir

Your love is with you!

Escamillo

Remember the young Spanish woman,
looking death in the eyes!
Your love is with you, bullfighter!
Your love is with you!

Frasquita and Mercedes

Remember the young Spanish woman,
looking death in the eyes!
Your love is with you, bullfighter!
Your love is with you!

Choir

in the heat of battle!

Escamillo

The circus froze, and it became creepy.
Here is a bull rushing headlong through the arena!
An angry bull is no joke
Here's a jerk, a blow - and the poor horse falls instantly!
“Bravo, toro!” - shouts of joy,
and the picador was crushed by the slain horse!
The bull went crazy. In a wild rage
splashes with saliva, roars, eyes darting fire!
And you, bullfighter, are cold-blooded,
although now it’s not a bull, but a devil in front of you!
The thunder of the drums sounded!
The hour has struck! The exit is yours!
So, attention! Let's begin now!
Yes, your time has come, bullfighter!
Challenge to fight
abandoned by fate!
Remember the young Spanish woman,
looking death in the eyes!
Your love is with you, bullfighter!
Your love is with you!

All

Your time has come, bullfighter!
Challenge to fight
abandoned by fate!

Carmen

Remember, my friend, about the Spanish flu in the hour of battle!
Believe that love, your love is with you! Love!

Frasquita and Mercedes

Remember the young Spanish woman,
looking death in the eyes!
Your love is with you, bullfighter!
Your love is with you!

Morales, Zuniga and choir

Believe that love awaits you with victory!
Your love is with you!

Escamillo

Remember the young Spanish woman,
looking death in the eyes!
Your love is with you, bullfighter!
Your love is with you!
Love! Love! Love!

Choir

Remember the young Spanish woman, my friend,
in the heat of battle!
Don't forget, your love is with you, with you!

All

Bullfighter! Bullfighter! Love is with you!

Escamillo

(to Carmen)
Let me find out
What's your name, beauty?
In whose name should we conjure fate?
at a terrible hour?

Carmen

Carmen, Carmencita -
if you introduce yourself.

Escamillo

Is it possible to confess my love to you?

Carmen

If you want to hear a refusal.

Escamillo

The answer is not at all disconsolate!
I am flattered by your attention and have hope!

Carmen

Hope - the more vain, the more beautiful it is!

Zuniga

(to Carmen)
I'll come again in the evening. Don't forget.

Carmen

(to Zuniga)
There's no point, Lieutenant.

Zuniga

I'm willing to take the risk.

(Everyone except Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen and Lilhas Pasta leaves. Carmen looks after Escamillo for a long time. Dancairo and Romendado enter.)

Frasquita

(to Dancairo)
Are you up to something, buddy?

Dancairo

(to women)
Would you like to help us?
Today we are going to win a substantial jackpot,
but we can't do without you...

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Not enough?

Dancairo

Yes, we can’t do without you.
There is a job for you in the “play”.

Mercedes

What “roles” should we play?

Frasquita

What “roles” should we play?

Dancairo

In general, you agree, don't you?
Any role suits you.

Romendado

Any role suits you.

Carmen

Who knows?

Dancairo

Matched.

Mercedes

Who knows?

Romendado

Matched.

Frasquita

Who knows?

Dancairo and Romendado

Matched.

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Who knows? What role will they be given to play?

Dancairo and Romendado

Any role suits you.

Dancairo

Matched.

Mercedes

Who knows?

Romendado

Matched.

Frasquita

Who knows?

Dancairo

Matched.

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Who knows?

Dancairo and Romendado

Matched.

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

What role will they be given to play?

Dancairo and Romendado

Any role suits you.
We don't need to hide from you
We need top class actresses,
without unnecessary phrases
and without grimaces.
If the gypsy goes all in,
he's ahead
knows the outcome:
honor to the king, honor to the ace,
After all, the lady will have the upper hand!

The game promises her success.

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Your “cards”, our “Game”,
It's time for us to get down to business!

Dancairo and Romendado

Who should play what “role”?

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Let's not argue, it's up to us to decide.

Dancairo and Romendado

Who should play what “role”?

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Let's not argue, it's up to us to decide.
Let's not argue, it's up to us to decide.

Dancairo and Romendado

Let's not argue, it's up to you to decide.

Frasquita, Dancairo and Romendado

When the gypsy goes all in...

Mercedes and Carmen

If the gypsy goes all in,
he's ahead
knows the outcome.

All

Honor to the king, honor to the ace,
after all, the lady will prevail!
She deserves an encore! and “bravo!”
her game promises success!
She deserves an encore! and “bravo!”
her game promises success!

he knows exactly the right move:

The lady will prevail over them!

Frasquita

Yes, it's always like that!

So it was, so it will be!

Frasquita

Yes, it's always like that!

Mercedes, Carmen, Dancairo and Romendado

Frasquita

Good luck to you!

Mercedes and Carmen

Success is not easy, it's for you...

Dancairo and Romendado

Success is not easy, we need it...

All

Hard to achieve without ladies!

Dancairo

The “contract” is ready, the “actresses” are available.

Mercedes

We have the honor.

Frasquita

We have the honor.

Dancairo

The “stage” awaits you.

Carmen

But not me, not me...
I can't go with you
at least let you down
It's not easy for me.
Please forgive me, please forgive me!

Dancairo and Romendado

Carmen, are you kidding me?

Carmen

I'm not kidding, my friends,
I'm not kidding, my friends.

Dancairo and Romendado

But if this is all serious,
Then we have a question for you.

Frasquita and Mercedes

Can you explain what's wrong with you?

Carmen

I'll tell you everything later.
Now I ask you to forgive me.

Dancairo

What happened to you? What's wrong with you, Carmen?
Tell me quickly!

Frasquita

Yes, Carmen, tell me, what's wrong with you?

Mercedes

What happened to you?

Romendado

Tell me, what's wrong with you?

What happened to you?

Carmen

I won't hide it from you...

Frasquita

Mercedes

Dancairo

Romendado

Carmen

I admit, maybe I'll do it again...

Dancairo and Romendado

Frasquita and Mercedes

Carmen

I fell in love again!

Dancairo

Can't be!

Dancairo and Romendado

Can't be!

What happened to you? This is weird!

Frasquita and Mercedes

Still strange!

Carmen

Yes, I fell in love!

Dancairo

Alas, Carmen, it’s completely inappropriate!

Carmen

Yes, buddy, I know it myself.

Dancairo and Romendado

(ironic)
Love is strong. There is no doubt about it.
She took people's hearts captive.
We sacredly honor her commands,
if they are useful in business!
You fall in love at least a hundred times,
but duty is duty, think about us!

Carmen

It is a terrible sin to forget about debt.
You're right, but here's the problem:
Not every debt torments us for long.
Who knows a lot about love,
For that, debt is not debt!
My answer: no, I won’t go anywhere!

Dancairo

We really need you, I swear!

Carmen

I stay.

Romendado

Carmen, we can’t go without you!

Frasquita, Mercedes, Dancairo and Romendado

No way, Carmen, no way!

Dancairo and Romendado

In a serious game
our main trump card,
of course you!

Frasquita and Mercedes

In a serious game
our main trump card,
of course you!

Carmen

Success, friends,
awaits you without me!

All

If the gypsy goes all in,
he's ahead
knows the outcome:
honor to the king, honor to the ace,
after all, the lady will prevail!
She deserves an encore! and “bravo!”
her game promises success!
She deserves an encore! and “bravo!”
her game promises success!
Yes, when the gypsy goes all in,
he knows exactly the right move:
king and ace don't count in the game,
The lady will prevail over them!

Frasquita

Yes, it's always like that!

Mercedes, Carmen, Dancairo and Romendado

So it was, so it will be!

Frasquita

Yes, it's always like that!
Good luck to you!

Mercedes and Carmen

Success is sometimes not easy, it's for you...

Dancairo and Romendado

Success is sometimes not easy, we need it...

All

Can't achieve without ladies!
There is no success in business without ladies!

Dancairo

Who are you waiting for, Carmen?

Carmen

I, friends, am waiting for
who last time
saved me from prison.
He is one of the local soldiers.

Romendado

Worthy of all awards!

Dancairo

I'll be very happy
make an acquaintance with him!
He'll soon be on his own
will come to us.

Jose

(behind the stage; from afar)

Carmen

(to Dancairo)
Have you heard?

Jose

(behind the scenes)
Who sent you to us, dragoon from Alcal?

Jose

(behind the scenes)
Believe it or not -
angels and devils,
to life or death!
If it is true,
this is a bold step!
Sometimes I want
risk your head!
That's how I feel
Dragoon from Alcale!

(Near the window, Frasquita and Mercedes watch Jose approaching.)

Frasquita

It's just right for us!

Mercedes

Looks like he's smart!

Dancairo

Really, we have a good companion!

Romendado

Who said "cowardly"?

Carmen

That unfortunate liar!

Carmen

Ours, but not quite.

Jose

(offstage; approaching)
Who goes? It's me, the dragoon from Alcale!
What brings you here from Alcal?
Obsessed with passion
executed by jealousy,
I'm going to my beloved!
If it is true,
this is a bold step!
Sometimes I want
risk your head!
That's how I feel
Dragoon from Alcale!

(Enters the tavern. Dancairo, Romendado, Frasquita and Mercedes exit.)

Carmen

Hello Jose!

Jose

Carmen

Well, how do you like prison?

Jose

Almost drove me crazy!

Carmen

Embittered?

Jose

No, not at all. I'm in captivity all day
I was thinking about our meeting.

Carmen

So you're in love?

Jose

Yes! Crazy!

Carmen

I entertained the gentlemen officers,
while I was waiting for you.

Jose

Why... You?!

Carmen

Every day I danced for them.

Jose

Carmen, how could you?!

Carmen

And you, my friend, are jealous!
Why, sir?
your angry gaze?
In response to your reproach
I'll dance for you too
if you want it.
By the will of fate at this hour
you are my viewer!
La la la la la la la...

(Carmen dances, singing, to the accompaniment of castanets. Jose looks at her with admiration. Behind the stage, from afar, trumpets can be heard.)

Jose

(stopping Carmen)
Please, Carmen, stop, listen!

Carmen

(surprised)
What's wrong with you, Don Jose?

Jose

Do you hear, somewhere in the distance...
The sound of an army trumpet?
He torments my soul
He orders us to hurry to the gathering!

Carmen

Bravo! Bravo! How lovely!
Without music there is no fun in dancing
Now the enthusiasm is the same
will find my dance again!
La la la la la la la la...

(Carmen continues to dance. Jose looks on with enthusiasm again. The buglers pass by the house. The sounds of the trumpets fade away.)

Jose

(stopping Carmen again)
Please understand, Carmen,
After all, there is military duty in the world!
I'm used to reckoning with duty!

Carmen

My God! Are you a debtor?!
Oh! How careless I was!
Oh! How careless I was!
Alas! My dear friend
became a beggar before our eyes,
became a beggar before our eyes!
My hopes are ruined!
I dance for him
but he has nothing to pay him with,
he, unfortunate man, is in debt!
Ta-ra-ta-ta...
I feel sorry for you, poor fellow!
Ta-ra-ta-ta...
Hurry up to repay your debts!
Fly away, little dove!
Yes! Damn love!
After all, you took an oath!
Why are you delaying? Run quickly!
The order has been given to be in the barracks!

Jose

Forgive me Carmen
and have pity on me!
I lived one dream
dream of our meeting!
Separation is pain
but you and I
see you again
can't stop him
nothing in the world!

Carmen

Ta-ra-ta-ta...
Reminds me of a pipe!
Ta-ra-ta-ta...
The soldier is duty bound!
My God, it's obvious he
loses his mind!
What happens in madness?
he doesn't know himself!
And he says
about love!

Jose

Carmen, believe me, I love you!

Carmen

You are lying!

Jose

I love! Love you!

Carmen

But I don’t believe the words!

Jose

I'll prove!

Carmen

I don't even want to listen!

Jose

Do you remember the flower - your gift to me?

Carmen

I don't even want to listen!
No! No! No! No!

Jose

I saved that flower, Carmen!

(Takes a flower out of his uniform pocket and shows it to Carmen.)

This flower is a living flame,
a burning memory of love,
burns with imperishable beauty,
and the aroma intoxicates with a dream!
There in the darkness, in grave bondage
trembled in his halo,
in his jubilant fire.
The fire that you lit in me!
I dreamed of you in ecstasy,
I was ready to cry from excitement...
Then suddenly he grew gloomy, and fatal
I thought meeting you...
But... my heart was racing in anxiety,
rushed towards you again and again,
and, like a bird to the blue,
rushing to you, rushing to you!
You are the whole world to me,
the whole world, Carmen!
You are a cry of delight, a groan of suffering,
my life and my destiny!
You are a whirlpool of passionate desire,
my Carmen!
You are my altar, my prayer,
my salvation!

Carmen

You pathetic idle talker!

Jose

I swear!

Carmen

All your words are lies!
He who loves is ready
ready to go to the ends of the earth!

Jose

Carmen

Yes! If you're in love, we'll rush to the mountains...

Jose

Carmen

Where the river rumbles in pearls,
where the world has gone a little crazy,
where the delirious night draws patterns of stars
and lays a carpet of clouds!
If you're in love, let's rush to the mountains!

Jose

Carmen

The air there is filled with happiness!
There is a land of miracles!
There's heaven in heaven!
There ranks and shoulder straps fade,
there the officer is a match for a simple soldier,
there are different laws,
No one has the right to order anyone there!
Overhead is a heavenly tent,
no need, no worries,
there the drunken wind sings!
There are gypsies there, with rebellious souls,
Freedom awaits, freedom awaits!

Jose

Carmen

If you're in love, we'll rush to the mountains...

Jose

Carmen

Where the river rumbles in pearls...

Jose

Carmen

Where the world has gone a little crazy
where are the clouds under your feet...

Jose

I ask, Carmen, be silent... be silent! My God!
Enough, please! I beg you!
God, give me strength!

Carmen

Where the world has gone a little crazy
where the delirious night draws patterns of stars!
Hurry, hurry there, to that land of miracles,
to that paradise of heaven!
If you're in love, then
hurry, hurry there,
where the river rumbles in pearls,
where the world has gone a little crazy!
Hurry there! Hurry there!

Jose

I ask you to be silent!

(abruptly freeing himself from Carmen's embrace)
No! You can’t throw off your debt like a uniform!
Whatever you want, I’m not a deserter!
I will not let it
stigmatize
your name!

Carmen

To hell with everything!

Jose

Carmen, I beg you!

Carmen

No! I've had enough!

Jose

Listen!

Carmen

I speak...

Jose

Carmen

Goodbye! Go away forever!

Jose

Well! That's it - that's it!
Sorry and goodbye!

Carmen

Jose

Carmen, goodbye! Do not see you again!

Carmen

(Jose runs to the door. A knock on the door stops him.)

Zuniga

(Behind the door)
Carmen, open up! Please!

Jose

Someone is knocking on the door!

Carmen

Shut up! Shut up!

Zuniga

Are the doors strong?
I'll check!

(Opens the door by force.)

So who are you with, beauty!
I thought he was a dandy
and he is a simple sergeant!
The worse, for example,
officer for you?

(to Jose)
Sergeant, do you understand?

Jose

(firmly)
No!

Zuniga

Go away! That's an order!

Jose

I will leave, but after you!

Zuniga

(pushing Jose)
Out!

Jose

(grabbing a saber)
Ah, that's how it is!
Let's see whose will take it!

(Carmen stands between Zuniga and Jose and calls her friends for help.)

Carmen

Jose is jealous as hell!
Will kill! Will kill!

(Dancairo, Romendado, Mercedes, Frasquita, gypsies and gypsies come running from all sides. At a sign from Carmen, Dancairo and Romendado disarm Zuniga. Carmen addresses him mockingly.)

What a pity, sir,
what a pity, sir,
what is your honor
accidentally got lost
came to us here,
and that’s the whole problem!
Yes, yes, we can easily
send you to hell forever...
Pray that this doesn't happen!

Romendado

(with a gun in his hand; kindly)
What a pity, sir...

Dancairo

(copying Romendado)
What a pity, sir...

Romendado

What a pity, sir...

Dancairo

What a pity, sir...

Dancairo and Romendado

But you will have to wander through the alleys.
We offer you, we offer you...

Carmen

Evening walk!

Romendado

Let me...

Dancairo

Let me...

Dancairo, Romendado and the Gypsies

Form a company!

Zuniga

At the moment
a gun is a compelling argument...
Before him, of course, it’s nonsense
stubbornness and bravado.
But... this dispute
we'll decide later!

Dancairo

Please, if necessary,
We will wait!
Well, for now...
A walk will cool your ardor slightly!

Romendado and the Gypsies

A walk will cool your ardor slightly!

Carmen

(to Jose)
Well, what are you going to tell me now?

Jose

(dejectedly)
I'm trapped!

Carmen

Oh! Please dont be mad!
A free life awaits you and me!
A free life awaits:
overhead is a heavenly tent!
No need, no worries!
There the drunken wind sings!
There are gypsies there, with rebellious souls,
Freedom awaits, freedom awaits!

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen and the Gypsies

(to Jose)
Discard all doubts quickly!
Listen, my friend, to the dictates of your heart,
because the heart will not let you down!

A heavenly tent overhead!
No need, no worries!
There the drunken wind sings!
There are gypsies there, with rebellious souls,
Freedom awaits, freedom awaits!

Dancairo, Romendado and the Gypsies

You will find happiness, there is no doubt about it!
Listen, my friend, to the dictates of your heart!
Your heart will not let you down!
Do you hear it calling you to the mountains?!
The sky is a tent above your head!
No need, no worries!
There are gypsies there, rebellious in soul,
freedom awaits!

Jose

(revived)
Oh!

Gypsies

A heavenly tent overhead!

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen, Dancairo, Romendado and Jose

Above your head is a heavenly tent!

Gypsies

A heavenly tent overhead!

All

No need and no worries!
No need and no worries!
Life flows happily!

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen, Jose and the first group of gypsies

There is no need and no worries!
There are no worries!
Life flows happily!

Dancairo and Romendado

It's just waiting for us there...

Second group of gypsies

Yes, everyone is waiting for us there...

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen, Dancairo, Romendado, Jose and a group of gypsies

Only there are gypsies, rebellious in soul...

Another group of gypsies

All

Freedom awaits! Freedom awaits!

ACT THREE

(Wild rocky place in the mountains. Night. One after another, smugglers appear with bales on their shoulders, followed by gypsies and gypsies.)

Choir

Fortune seems kind today

One wrong step in the mountains!
Just one wrong step!
Be careful not to take this step!
Although fortune is kind again and again,

One wrong step in the mountains!

Frasquita, Mercedes, Dancairo, Romendado and Jose

Our path is thorny,
and the burden is not light.
Take risks, smuggler,
through storms and fogs!
Don't stumble! Look around:
and here, and there, and here, and there
traps and traps!
Let the barriers arise
and the winds hit your face,
And a ridge of menacing clouds hangs over us!
Let them follow the trail
they still won't find it!
We challenge the customs detectives!
Let them follow us!
Fortune seems kind today
but carelessness is our insidious enemy!
Remember, my friend: to the edge of the abyss
One wrong step in the mountains!
Just one wrong step!
Be careful not to take this step!

First group of gypsies

Although fortune is kind again,
carelessness is our insidious enemy!
Remember, friend: to the edge of the abyss
in the mountains there is only one, one step!
Just one wrong step
just one wrong step!

Second group of gypsies

She's kind, that's true
but remember, my friend: to the abyss
just one wrong step
just one wrong step!

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen and the third group of gypsies

Although fortune is kind again and again,
carelessness is our insidious enemy!
You remember all the time: to the edge of the abyss
One wrong step in the mountains!

Dancairo, Romendado, Jose and the fourth group of gypsies

Although fortune is kind again,
but carelessness is ours, our insidious enemy!
Remember, my friend, that to the edge of the abyss
Sometimes we only have one step left!

All

Fortune is extremely kind today!

Carmen

(to Jose)
Are you sad about something?

Jose

I just remembered the one
that I am naively a saint
I considered him decent and honest.
Who am I now?!

Carmen

What happened to the poor thing?

Jose

You are laughing at my dear mother!
I will not let!

Carmen

Ah well! He really wants
son to his mother?
I'm not in bondage -
you can leave.
For you, therefore,
our lot is hard.

Jose

No need to joke like that!

Carmen

Seriously.

Jose

I want to warn you:
Such words are dangerous...

Carmen

Are you threatening me with death?
Why are you keeping silent? Maybe I'm right?
If this is fate
There is no need to argue with her.

(Frasquita and Mercedes take out cards and begin to guess, laying out the cards in front of them.)

Frasquita

Mercedes

Frasquita

Mercedes

Frasquita

Two at a time!

Mercedes

Two at a time!

Frasquita

Three cards here!

Mercedes

Three cards here!

Frasquita

Two there!

Mercedes

Two there!

Frasquita and Mercedes

Deck of cards, tell me, tell me

Frasquita

Mercedes

About what awaits me in love...

Frasquita

And that enemies lurk in the soul.

Mercedes

And that enemies lurk in the soul.

Frasquita and Mercedes

Deck of cards, tell me

and that enemies lurk in the soul.

Frasquita

Mercedes

Frasquita

Mercedes

Tell!
Fate promises me a groom
handsome and young.

My blood is an aristocrat.
He is poor, but so noble.

Frasquita

And mine is fabulously rich,
but he is a miser and a boor by nature.

Mercedes

He's leading me down the aisle,
our entire path is strewn with flowers.

Frasquita

My miser won't buy a flower,
he won't waste money.

Mercedes

Happiness awaits me ahead,
albeit with need in the neighborhood.

Frasquita

And my... and my worthless freak?
He will die! But he will leave me an inheritance.

Mercedes

Frasquita and Mercedes

Deck of cards, tell me, tell me
the whole truth to me about bright days and troubles.

Frasquita

About what awaits me in love...

Mercedes

About what awaits me in love...

Frasquita

And that enemies lurk in the soul.

Mercedes

And that enemies lurk in the soul.

Frasquita and Mercedes

Deck of cards, tell me
about what awaits me in love,
and that enemies lurk in the soul.

Frasquita

Wealth!

Mercedes

Carmen

Well, I’ll tell my fortune too.

(Lays out cards.)

Diamonds! Peaks! Again! And again!
This is death for me and him...
Fate itself sends death!

(Shuffles the cards and lays them out again.)

Again, no matter how you lay it out, it’s the same cards.
Death has a mournful face in them.
No, death will not spare you, whether you are young or old,
insignificant or great!
From birth to you in the eternal book of destinies
the hour of death is appointed.
When he is far away, your fortune telling will be
happy every time.
But if the cards are suddenly in ominous combinations
come again and again
that means death! Oh God, give me strength!
She came for mine!
She's calling me! Farewell, earthly shelter!
Shrouded in mystery, she came for me!
Follow me, follow me!
Well, death is death!

Frasquita and Mercedes

Deck of cards, tell me, tell me
the whole truth to me about bright days and troubles!

Frasquita

About what awaits me in love...

Carmen

Mercedes

About what awaits me in love...

Frasquita

And what are enemies hiding in the soul...

Carmen

Mercedes

And what are enemies hiding in the soul...

Carmen

Fate sends death!

Frasquita and Mercedes

Deck of cards, tell me
about what awaits me in love,
and that enemies lurk in the soul.

Carmen

Fate sends death!
Fate sends death!

Frasquita

Wealth!

Mercedes

Carmen

Fate sends death!

Frasquita

Wealth!

Mercedes

Carmen

Fate sends death!

Frasquita

Frasquita and Mercedes

Ofrasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

Fate! Fate!

(Dancairo and Romendado return.)

Carmen

Frasquita

Is there nothing stopping us?

Dancairo

No; but the devil knows them!
I saw the outfit there
of three soldiers.
To slip through
they need to be distracted somehow.

Carmen

This is what we will do now.
Any cordon is nothing for us.

Frasquita and Mercedes

Carmen

It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
and no matter what the rank...

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

He certainly loves women!

Whoever he is, the customs guard,
It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
whatever his rank...

Whoever he is, whoever he is,
customs guard, customs guard,
It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
and no matter what the rank...

He certainly loves women!
Customs service...

Frasquita

Full of temptation.

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen and the Gypsies

Very difficult.

Carmen

A strong will is needed...

Frasquita, Mercedes, Carmen and the Gypsies

And caution

Mercedes

This service is like war!

Frasquita

It requires a lot of risk.

Frasquita and Mercedes

Whoever he is, the customs guard,
It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
whatever his rank,
he certainly loves women!

Carmen

Whoever he is, whoever he is,
customs guard, customs guard,
It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
and whatever rank he has,
he certainly loves women!

Dancairo, Romendado and the first group of gypsies

The customs guard is your admirer!
The customs guard is your admirer!

Second group of gypsies

Whoever he is, whoever he is,
The customs guard is your admirer!
The customs guard is your admirer!
The customs guard is your admirer,
always a fan of yours!

Frasquita, Mercedes and Carmen

The soldier guard will throw down his rifle,
if we want it!
There's a moon in the sky and a devil nearby!
A glass of wine - to hell with the war!
Let's bewitch, discourage,
Let's talk and distract!
The guards, looking at the bags,
He won’t even ask what we’re carrying.

Frasquita

So we will pass any cordon!

Mercedes

So we will pass the cordon!

Carmen

So let's pass the cordon!

First group of gypsies

So we will pass any cordon!

Second group of gypsies

Frasquita, Mercedes and the first group of gypsies

Whoever he is, the customs guard,
It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
whatever his rank,
There is no reason to be proud of your rank.
We captivate everyone!
Yes, success awaits us.

Carmen and the second group of gypsies

Whoever he is, whoever he is,
customs guard, customs guard,
It doesn’t matter what rank he is,
and whatever rank he has,
There is no reason to be proud of your rank.
We captivate everyone!
Yes, success awaits us.
