Translation and meaning of Black Sabbath in English and Russian. Group "Black Sabbath" (Black Sabbath) Black Sabbath translation of the group name

Black Sabbath is an English cult rock band that influenced the development of rock music in general, and heavy metal in particular. It was formed in 1968 in Birmingham by Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. Before they started working together, they all played in different musical groups. The ideological leader of the future Black Sabbath, Iommi, and his partner in the previous musical project, Ward, decided to create a new group that would play heavy blues. And, one day, going to a local music store, they found an advertisement for Osborne and Butler, who were looking for an opportunity to perform concerts, and invited them as participants. Initially, the band had a different name - before, in fact, Black Sabbath, the group had the name “Earth”. The guys became regulars, in terms of performances, at jazzman Jim Simpson's club. Since the musicians performed with blues containing elements of jazz, Jim liked them, and he decided to become their manager. They were afraid by their refusal to deprive themselves of regular performances in his establishment, so they agreed.

And as a laying of the first brick in their musical activities under his patronage, Simpson arranged for them to participate in a project, the essence of which was based on the tour of four groups - the concert each evening ended with the performance of all of them at once on one stage. At the end of 1968, Iommi briefly left for another group, but, disillusioned with the development trend of their music, he returned to Earth at the beginning of 1969 - he did not like being there only as a performer, when here he was the clear leader. Young people begin to write their own musical material - this is how “Wicked World”, “Black Sabbath” and “The Wizzard” appeared. Moreover, the last of them was written under the impression that in one of the clubs Osborn and Butler, who was in a state of drug intoxication, dreamed that someone galloping idiotically outside was a fairy-tale elf.

And the song “Black Sabbath,” which later served as the idea for the band’s name, has a special history of creation. It’s interesting that different members of the team have different memories of this. Thus, Osborne says that he was inspired to write the song by Butler's story about a vision that arose after reading the themes of Dennis Wheatley's occult novel about black magic in the 16th century. Geezer said that he woke up in the middle of the night and saw a figure, all wrapped in black, standing at the foot of his bed - he was numb with horror. After a few moments, the otherworldly silhouette disappeared. And the first lines of the song “Black Sabbath” are precisely about this, so to speak, Butler’s insight. Iommi says that he was just playing, when suddenly he hit the right chord and riff after riff built something incredible - a composition was born that gave the group a new development. The group’s motives for choosing an occult and dark theme for their music are also difficult to find out in detail. Since, in one interview, Iommi said that he was inspired to do this by seeing a large queue at the cinema for the film “Black Saturday” through the window. He thought that since people like to watch movies that frighten and fascinate them, then they might also like music of a similar context. In his autobiography, he practically refuses these words, saying that at that time he didn’t even know about this movie.

And at that time the group needed to change its name, since there was already one Earth in England - Butler suggested “Black Sabbath”, and this idea seemed very successful to the participants. Simpson organizes the band's debut performance in Europe. Young people tried to attract attention there by any means possible - at one concert Iommi tried to play the flute, which he had never touched before, at another - Osbourne painted his face red. At the end of 1969, the group performed on national radio, presenting their songs, including “Black Sabbath.” Meanwhile, the musicians continued to give concerts at Simpson's club, where they were soon noticed by the then fashionable DJ Tony Hall. He immediately drew up a contract with the group from his company, which he then resold to another label. The musicians began recording their first record. While working on the legendary "Black Sabbath", thunder and ringing bells were added. On the front side of the album there was a photo of an ancient mill in the English village of Mapledurham and an inverted crucifix, because of which many began to mistakenly consider the musicians to be Satanists. The group had many contracts for performances, and the payment was meager, then they changed the producer to Patrick Meehan, who, moreover, much to the pleasure of the participants, protected them from intrusive press until the release of the album, adding mystery to the debut.

And so, on Friday February 1970, the first record, echoing the name of the group, was presented to the general public. It reached number 8 in the UK and number 23 on the US Billboard 200. Sales of this album reached 1 million copies. It is amazing that critics, for the most part, always spoke rather unflatteringly about the group, creating a great contrast with the ardent love of many fans of the group around the world. Black Sabbath began its meteoric rise. And the managers, feeling great commercial success, structured the touring schedule and recording of the group’s new albums in such a way that the participants worked almost to the limit, and sometimes reached complete physical and moral exhaustion. It is amazing that even after many years of success, the musicians remained themselves, not succumbing to the “stardom” disease, saying that having come from the poorest strata, after they became famous, having bought a car and a house, they were not interested in money, but their goal has always been and remains the same - to make good music. Osborne repeatedly left and returned to the team. In 2015, Black Sabbath announced the start of a farewell tour under the logical name “THE END”.

Year of creation 1969, UK.
Great Britain is home to many outstanding musicians. In 1969, in one of the small industrial towns of England, the group Black Sabbath was created. Then the residents of Birmingham did not think about the size of the star being born in their city.

Now we are putting the rock band on a par with such rock giants as Led Zeppelin And Deep Purple. The band members were able to create cult hits and become the core of hard rock in the seventies. Their presence can be traced in the sound of modern rock music, and this happens in both thrash metal and grunge. Black Sabbath frontman John Michael Osborne grew up in a poor family, he spent little time studying, and the guy had to work from the age of 15.

There was always a shortage of money and sometimes it came to the point of theft. John even once had a chance to serve 6 months in prison. Ever since school, Michael’s friends called him “Ozzy,” a nickname he received due to his love of the book “The Wizard of Oz.” John became friends with another member of the team, Terry Butler, nicknamed “Geezer” (“Old Lady”), when he worked in the group Rare Breed.

Terry later wrote songs for Sabbath and was the band's bassist. Michael studied at the same school with the future guitarist of the band and, frankly speaking, the relationship between them was not the most friendly. But in order to play in the same group, the guys had to become friends. By the way, before the soloists settled on the name Black Sabbath, the band changed its name twice: Polka Tulk Blues Band, The Earth.

It was only in 1969 that a mystical thriller suggested the final version of the group's name. The rock band strongly favored the theme of mysticism. Most fans, unable to grasp the thread of irony, took the group’s “black creativity” at face value. In 1970, the guys put together a full-length album. Believe it or not, it only cost £600 to record and took 8 hours to record.

You have to be absolutely desperate, and also a mega-master, to collect on one album in such a time successful, rather dark sounds, among which you can sometimes see the blues beginning, hear Ozzy’s high brutal vocals, such a collection is not often encountered. And all this against the backdrop of texts where unimaginable images of evil spirits come to life. In the same year, the group’s second album, “Paranoid,” was released, which became a good continuation of the successful start.

Here there was not only a place for images of hopelessness and apocalypse, evil and war, but also several truly gorgeous landscape sketches (“Sleeping Village”, “Planet Caravan”). The albums became popular far beyond Britain. Of course, there were smart people who accused the group of promoting dark rituals and Satanism. But this did not stop the group from gaining more and more popularity.
