Guitar tutorial for beginners

Well, dear readers, here we come directly to the beginning of your learning to play the six-string guitar.

Now you already know the history of the guitar, its structure and the name of all its components (I hope). The tool has been purchased and configured.

Let's just agree on some things right away.

  • I made this site to help beginning guitarists gain basic playing skills and perhaps discover something new for hobbyists.
  • I myself am quite passionate about the art of playing the guitar, and believe me, I made a lot of mistakes during the learning process.
Therefore, try to be careful guitar lessons which I offer you. There is not a single extra word in my course.
Brevity and clarity even for a child - this is the meaning of this guitar tutorial.
  • Everything I am going to talk about was not invented by me. This is just my understanding of the essence of what is happening and the result of translating incomprehensible texts from textbooks and tutorials, of which I have read a considerable number.
  • I write articles myself, so if you want to use my material for yourself, then the link to mine guitar lessons required. I will do the same.
  • Don't jump from lesson to lesson. I understand that the desire is great, but this will not achieve anything. Be patient, and in a few days we will learn the first piece.
  • In order for you to fully learn to play the guitar, you will need to devote at least 1-2 hours a day to it.
  • Take your time!!! - This is the most important mistake I made. As soon as you learn a part of a piece, you just want to play it back at the speed of light, so that the fretboard starts to fire. I beg you, don’t fall for this, although it’s probably inevitable - such is human nature;)
  • At the beginning of class, stretch your hands by clenching them into a fist to increase blood flow. Before playing serious pieces, spend some time on scales and simple pieces.
  • For successful learning, you can use special guitar programs, which can be downloaded in the section of the same name.

Well, that's basically it. You will learn the rest as you read my self-instruction manual. Some lessons will be accompanied by videos for a better understanding of the material. Click the link to the FIRST guitar lesson and go!

If you are a beginner guitarist or have no playing skills at all, then the electronic tutorials offered below will certainly help you achieve good results in a short time.

Coach Guitar is ideal for those who have never held a guitar in their hands, at least correctly. The first lessons focus on just that: proper instrument and pick position, wrist position, and simple chords. Once the basics have been mastered, you move on to learning the compositions, each of which is divided into segments and accompanied by a video.

The application has a lot of material that is interesting to study, but most of it is open only by subscription.

Once you've mastered the basics, learning is best done with real songs. TabPro, according to the developers, has more than 200,000 tabs. In the top 100, for example, there are popular songs by Metallica, Eagles, Muse, Pink Floyd, and this is only a small part.

The teaching method is the simplest: there is a musical score on the screen, you turn on the track, see how the composition is arranged, and then repeat.

The application has several interesting options: you can select a section from a song and loop it on the fretboard, perfecting your own playing as you repeat it. And if you're tired of playing the guitar, choose bass or drums and improve in playing a new instrument.

If the game speed is too high, slow down the pace: there is a special button in the player for this. There is also a built-in tuner to tune your guitar. Instructions

Install the software. Guitar Instructor is distributed as free software, Guitar Pro is a licensed program, but there are also demo versions. Guitar Instructor takes up little space, and to install it you just need to run the exe file. True, it does not have a chord constructor, but it does have chord progressions, which Guitar Pro does not have. Both have a built-in tuner and metronome, as do reference books for chords and scales.

Open Guitar Instructor. Look at the main menu. There you will see five sections - “Chords”, “Chord Progressions”, “Scales”, “Tuner”, “Metronome”. Check out each of them. In the first one you will find over six hundred standard and modified bass chords. They are presented in the form of tablatures. Learn to read them. Please note that there are not five lines on tablature, as in regular musical notation, but six. The thickest one, also known as the sixth one, is drawn below. Each colored dot corresponds to the position of a finger on a particular string. Learn the Latin notations for notes, this is necessary for reading chords.

Set up your instrument. Use the built-in tuner for this. On a six-string guitar, the first string is built in unison with the E sound of the first octave. In the Latin notation this will be E. Tune the remaining strings using the same tuner or in the standard way, holding the second string on the fifth fret, the third on the fourth, the rest again on the fifth. They should sound in unison with the open previous ones. The built-in tuner provides standard tuning.

Select the desired key from the list of standard chords. You will see a list of possible options for a given consonance, and you need to determine the position. Check the appropriate option. Some strings are marked. It can be placed either above the sixth string or on the side of the fingerboard. If the cross is on top, this means that there is no need to touch the sixth string. The icon next to the string indicates that it remains open when you play this chord. You can get additional information about each chord. The corresponding button is located below. There you will learn the type of consonance and in what keys it is used.

With your finger in the desired position, run your right hand along the strings. All sounds of the chord should sound crisp, clear and even. There should be no rattling, dull sound or other defects. If there are any, adjust the position of your left hand. It is necessary that all the strings be clamped equally tightly, but the hand remains free.

Learn chord progressions. This can be done in the second section, "Chord Progressions". Here you will see. You won't need this at first, but later, when you start selecting songs, it can be very useful. In any case, you won't need to calculate each chord separately. Sequences of consonances are built according to certain rules, and this section gives an idea about them. You need to start playing sequences after you learn to play confidently.

In parallel with mastering chords, study the fretboard. A guitar is an instrument on which each sound can be played on several strings and several frets. You've already encountered this while studying chords. Try moving to scales. The Scales section is built on the same principle as the previous ones. Choose a range, then get to know it in more detail. Learn one of the most popular scales - at least A minor or C major. Play it until you master the major and minor scale pattern and fingering. It is better to start playing from the bottom up, then vice versa, using the same fingering.

Try playing chord progressions and lead chords at the right tempo. This feature is provided by the built-in metronome. In the box, enter the required number of beats per minute and click on the Start button. Beats of the measure will appear at the bottom of the window, and you will hear the specified rhythm. The size is set in the "File" menu.
