Fonvizin’s idea for the comedy “The Minor” arose in 1778. The Russian writer spent more than a year in France, where he studied jurisprudence and philosophy. He observed how European aristocrats lived and came to a rather disappointing conclusion: the Russian nobility was mired in inertia and ignorance. Upon returning home, Fonvizin began writing the work. It took him more than three years.

Uncle Starodum came to free Sophia from these ignorant Prostakovs. He met with his niece and promised to release her. At this time Taras and Prostakova entered the room. Act 1. Unexpected inheritance

It all starts with a dispute about a poorly tailored caftan for Mitrofan. For this, Mrs. Prostakova scolds Trishka, a self-taught person. Her husband also gets it, who thinks that the caftan is too big, but being afraid to object to her, he gives up his position. The wife is dissatisfied with the answer and complains that she got not a husband, but a fool. The teachers should arrive soon and Mitrofan is sent to have lunch before they arrive. But he has already eaten too much of the buns, so they send him off to frolic.

On this day, an agreement is scheduled for the engagement of Sophia and Skotinin, but they are not going to warn her about this. The brother of the owner of the house plans to unite the girl’s village and his lands in order to raise pigs.

Soon a girl enters, bringing with her a letter, but the owners of the house do not know how to read. Then it is read out by Pravdin, who has just arrived. It turns out that Sophia is a rich heiress. Everyone is very surprised. The mistress of the house rushes to congratulate the girl, and her brother realizes that there will be no engagement.

At this moment, the servant reports that soldiers led by an officer have arrived, which pretty much frightens her.

Act 2. Enviable bride

The officer turns out to be Milon, who meets his old friend Pravdin here. He tells the officer that he has the power to put an end to the cruelty of the mother of the family and the stupidity of her husband. Milon worries that his beloved may be harassed and is glad that Pravdin is on his side.

Sophia enters, which Milon is very happy about. She talks about the previous attitude towards her and today’s dramatic change in the behavior of the mistress of the house. The officer is unpleasant to hear this, but Sophia speaks unflatteringly about Mitrofan, which calms him down. Sophia hopes that the imminent arrival of her uncle will change her fate.

Skotinin enters, who is annoyed with his sister because she canceled the agreement. But he tells Sophia that they will not be separated, and threatens to take revenge on Mitrofan. Milo is outraged by such speeches.

Meanwhile, the nurse persuades Mitrofan to study science, but he only calls her names. Skotinin threatens him, but retreats, having received a rebuff from the old woman Eremeevna.

The mistress of the house ingratiates herself with Sophia and simultaneously praises her son. She invites teachers to bring him into the public eye. Young people - officers and officials - understand that the hired teachers are no good and leave.

At this time, the mother of the family asks her son to repeat the material he has covered, but he complains about his uncle, which is why she lashes out at Eremeevna in indignation. The teachers leave for lunch, complaining about their lot.

Act 3. Arrival of Starodum

Starodum arrived and together with Pravdin they discussed the era when morals and upbringing were different. The uncle tells the young man a little about those times.

Soon the long-awaited meeting between Starodum and his niece comes, and she learns that he has been in Siberia all this time, and the money he earned will be enough to successfully marry her off. Prostakova and her brother are fighting nearby, separated by Milon. Eremeevne falls under the hot hand and is reprimanded for not having enough servants today.

The whole family one by one gets to know Sophia’s uncle, Mitrofan especially tries, under the guidance of his mother. Starodum announces that he is taking Sophia to Moscow to get married. Prostakova is crying because she can no longer live without her and at the same time boasts about her son.

Under pressure from his mother, Mitrofan has to start studying again, but it never comes to him, and besides, his mother interferes all the time. Tsyfirkin and Kuteikin are indignant at the long wait and sympathize with the local servants. Vralman intervenes in the teaching, who believes that there is no point in bothering the boy’s head, and for this the other teachers almost bruised his sides.

Act 4. Blessing of Sophia and Milo

Sophia is reading a book. Uncle comes and they think for a long time about happiness. Starodum expresses to her several very interesting thoughts. She is glad that she has such an adviser.

Starodum receives a letter. Soon Sophia talks about her feelings for Milon, and her uncle rushes to meet him in person. From their conversation with the young man, the man understands that the officer will be a worthy husband to his niece. Therefore, the uncle immediately blesses them for marriage.

Soon Skotinin comes and asks for blessings on his marriage with Sophia, to which Starodum only laughs. Prostakova forces everyone to please their dear guest in every possible way and again praises her son, although the guest has already understood the depth of his stupidity. She immediately finds out that Sophia has now been promised to someone else, which makes her rage boil, and she plans to kidnap her before leaving.

Act 5. Attempted kidnapping and collapse of the Prostakov order

Starodum and Pravdin talk about the tsar and his power, and also look for a way to stop the cruelty of the mistress of the house. Soon Sophia is forcibly dragged into a carriage to marry Mitrofan, but Milon saves her. Pravdin assures that the Prostakovs are criminals and wants to punish them by turning to the government. Prostakova is on her knees asking them to spare them.

Starodum does not want to get involved with such low people and forgives them. Then the mistress of the house wants to flog all her people for missing the girl. Pravdin nevertheless decides to take the estate under government guardianship. Skotinin is quietly removed.

Now the teachers are demanding their salaries, and only Tsyfirkin has no complaints, since the student never learned anything. Pravdin and Milon reward him for his honesty. Starodum recognizes Vralman, who used to be his coachman. And he asks to serve again. Uncle takes it.
