The characters' gestures, most often performed at high speed, presented blurry, heavy spots to the audience. The soundtracks featured strange music with space effects. Dialogues were mumbled rather than spoken. In 1963, the production of the cartoon returned to Hollywood, to Chuck Jones' Sib-Tower 12 Productions studio. Chuck Jones" Sib-Tower 12 Productions ) and lasted until 1967. Tom and Jerry later reappeared in the animated series created by Hanna-Barbera and Filmation Studios. Filmation Studios) (-). In 2005, Warner Bros. released a series called The KarateGuard.

Plot

The plot of most cartoons centers on Tom's unsuccessful attempts to catch a mouse. Since in some episodes the characters get along quite peacefully with each other, it remains unclear why Tom is constantly pursuing Jerry. There are several plot twists that lead to a game of “cat and mouse”:

  • Natural instinct.
  • Jerry finds himself a protector (usually in the form of a bulldog, Spike) and, not without success, tries to set him against Tom.
  • Tom is given a condition (or he obeys the Mistress), and Jerry tries to break this condition so that Tom is kicked out.
  • A large animal escapes from a circus or zoo, for which they give an equally large reward, and accidentally wanders into the garden of Tom and Jerry's house.
  • Series with the orphan mouse Taffy. Jerry, temporarily acting as a nanny, is forced to save the naive Taffy from Tom.
  • Series with a duckling named Quacker. The action develops according to a similar pattern.
  • Series with a canary. He and Jerry take turns saving each other from Tom.
  • Cat love.
  • Musical series. Tom and Jerry get into fights right at the concert.
  • Sports series. Tom and Jerry play everything.
  • When enemies make peace.
  • They didn't share the warm place.
  • We need to save Tom.

The very idea of the cartoons is that Tom almost never manages to catch Jerry. Tom only wins in eight episodes. However, despite this, as a character he surpasses Jerry in terms of personal charm and audience sympathy.

Biographies of Tom and Jerry

Logo of the animated series “Tom and Jerry in childhood” It is not known how Tom and Jerry met. Also, for a long time nothing was known about their childhood. But in 1990, the animated series “Tom and Jerry in childhood” (dir. Robert Alvarez) was released, in which Jerry is not much different from himself in previous cartoons, and Tom is presented as a small but aggressive kitten. It’s not clear why, but they’ve been at odds since the very first cartoon. The animated series does not quite fit into the style of Tom and Jerry, differing both in execution and inconsistency in time (in the old episodes where Tom and Jerry are “adults”, the old lifestyle of the 40-60s and the technology of that time are noticeable, while in the “childhood” of Tom and Jerry you can see modern technology and new apartment furnishings).

The house in which Tom and Jerry live is constantly changing, but what remains unchanged is that they both live under the same roof. For a long time, Tom lived with a plump black woman, Mommy-Two-Slippers, and Jerry lived there too. Tom also lived for some time with a slender white woman in a skirt (in the frame, as in the case of Mommy, only the lower half of the body appears, in accordance with the style of cartoons, the main characters of which are not people, but their pets). In some episodes, Tom lives in his own two-story house.

In 1980, the animated series was released "The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show", which was radically different from all previous shows. The animation style was preserved, but at the same time the cartoon acquired a show format: one episode lasted about half an hour and included several stories about the adventures of Tom and Jerry. In addition, the dog Droopy (who plays the role of host and participant in the cartoons) and the bulldog Spike became regular participants in the show. The cartoon was distinguished by the fact that, except for Tom and Jerry, all the characters spoke in it.

In the fall of 2008 the company Warner Bros. announced that she intends to make a movie about Tom and Jerry. It is assumed that it will be created using the latest computer graphics technologies and will be a prequel, telling the story of how exactly the heroes met. Dan Lin, executive producer of the film “Terminator: Let the Savior Come,” has been entrusted with producing the future film.

Characters

Volume

Main article: Tom (character)

Volume(full name Tom Cat, English) tomcat- derived from the name of the male members of the cat family) is a dark blue anthropomorphic cat who first appears under the name "Jasper" in 1940. "Jasper" is Tom's last name: "Thomas Jasper". He constantly chases Jerry the mouse and sets traps for him, but often falls into them himself. Tom is kind and intelligent enough, so initially he is not inclined to eat Jerry, but he constantly competes or fights with him. Sometimes they forget about their enmity and act like best friends. Quite hot-tempered and at the same time vulnerable, he tries to obey his owner, but lives at the same time according to the rules of a house and street cat.

Jerry

Jerry(full name Gerald Mouse) is a brown anthropomorphic mouse who first appeared on screen in 1940. He was originally known as "Mouse" or "Jinx", meaning "bringer of misfortune". He is the main target in various kinds of chases and fights for Tom the cat and constantly tries to do some mischief to Tom. He leads an independent and opportunistic lifestyle, in between clashes with Tom he replenishes his food supplies using the refrigerator in the kitchen, or rests. Unlike Tom, who, despite the constant hunt for Jerry, still behaves quite delicately with him, Jerry does not shun violence and openly sadistic methods.

Minor characters

Spike

Spike is a guard bulldog who attacks Tom for bothering his son Tyke while chasing Jerry. Spike is quite talkative and emotional, very physically strong, not very smart, but friendly and patient. Undemanding to life, he is quite happy with a small kennel in the yard of the house, as long as there is food in his bowl. Likes to sleep. Has a tattoo of an anchor on his left shoulder. Voiced by: Billy Bletcher

Tyke

Tyke is Spike's son, he cannot talk, he only barks loudly and often. He obeys his father in everything and never leaves his side. A cheerful, but sometimes very nervous puppy (in one of the episodes he constantly hiccupped from the slightest fright).

Butch

Butch and Toodles the cat

In his attempts to catch Jerry, Tom often has to deal with Butch, a shaggy black street cat who wants to catch and eat Jerry. He doesn’t look different in intelligence or strength, but he’s very cunning, tougher than Tom. Usually he is Tom's friend, but if there is a beautiful cat nearby (most often Toodles) or good food (sometimes Jerry himself), the friendship is over. Present in many episodes. In one of the episodes he pretended to be a baby in order to get his hands on Tom's food, and in another he made a film about Spike (while talking a lot, commenting on the film), in the third he acted as a very rich cat (bought a flower bed of roses, a tank of perfume, a ring with a huge diamond, car), which is why Toodles left Tom for him.

Tom's girlfriends

Tom finds himself a new girlfriend several times. First it was Toots, a cat (or kitten) with an arrogant voice (appears in the episode The Zoot Cat), who called him "Tommy" (episode The Mouse Comes to Dinner). Tom's second and most frequently mentioned girlfriend is Toodles, but she is very silent and does not utter a word in any episode of the cartoon.

Mommy-Two-Slippers

Tom's owner Mommy-two-slippers Mammy Two Shoes) is depicted as a classic black housewife. Her full name is Lara Turner, her name was mentioned once in one of the issues. Originally conceived as a maid who kept order in the house where Tom and Jerry live, however, she began to be portrayed as the mistress of the house. Her face is almost never shown because the camera only covers 1/3 of the height of the rooms. The face of Mommy-Two-Slippers is visible in only one episode: Saturday Evening Puss, and only because young viewers bombarded the film studio with letters asking to see it. The prototype for its creation was the black actress Hattie McDaniel, Oscar winner for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind. Chases Tom with a broom when he is idle. Sometimes he puts on all his jewelry and goes to play poker. Quite often he throws Tom out of the house for laziness and self-harm. Favorite expression regarding Tom’s antics: “Tom, if you are my mouser, then I am Lana Turner, which I am not.”

Mommy-two-slippers was voiced by black actress Lillian Randolph, but in some later editions Randolph's voice was replaced by the voices of actresses June Foray, Freema Egyeman and Catherine Tate. He is afraid of mice and, at the sight of them, jumps up on heights, like a stool, while screaming loudly and calling for Tom. But in 1954, apparently for reasons of “political correctness,” Tom’s owner was changed. Mommy-Two-Slippers became Irish, and her bare heels and hands in the frame were repainted white. After 12 years they got rid of it altogether.

Taffy Nibbles

Nibbles, a little mouse later named "Tuffy"

Jerry adopted a little orphan mouse named Nibbles (later known as Taffy), who came from a certain mouse orphanage. In his first appearances, Nibbles was almost always extremely hungry and wore baby diapers. In later issues, he became less voracious and began speaking frequently, usually with a foreign accent (such as French in the episode Touché, Pussy Cat!), while continuing to wear a diaper like a small child.

Goldie

A fish that lives in the house where Tom and Jerry live. Tom often tried to catch and eat her. However, Jerry always came to the rescue.

Quacker

Duckling Quacker

Quacker is a minor character, a yellow duckling. Appears in episodes Little Quacker, The Duck Doctor, Just Ducky, Downhearted Duckling, Southbound Duckling, That's My Mommy, Happy Go Ducky And The Vanishing Duck. He is Jerry's friend and a treat for Tom. The mental state of this hero changes greatly in different episodes. At first he tried to commit suicide, because he considered himself ugly, until he met a duck who fell in love with him. In addition, at first he did not know how to swim. Jerry solved all his problems and he became more cheerful. In one of the episodes, at first he mistakes Tom for his mother, which made it easier for Tom to catch Quacker, then he guessed, but, not overcoming his devotion to the cat, he decided to be boiled alive, since he so wants to make dinner out of him. But Tom was so moved that he caught him a few centimeters above the boiling water and really began to behave like his mother. At the end of the episode, Tom swam like a duck with Quacker, while Quacker himself continued to mistake Tom for his mother.

Moreover, the duckling has a mother. In one of the episodes, she even, having learned that Tom wanted to eat her son, calls for help from her supposed dad Henry, a hefty drake with a large tattoo of an anchor. Having learned that Tom allegedly molested his significant other and even cut her clothes with a lawnmower, although this happened by accident when he wanted to catch a duckling, Tom himself shaved off Tom’s entire back half.

Uncle Pecos

Uncle Pecos is a mouse, one of Jerry's relatives, a Mexican, an avid guitarist, despite a severe stutter, who loves to sing country songs. In the series Pecos Pest Uncle Pecos chased Tom and pulled out his whiskers every time a guitar string broke (the guitar had cat whiskers instead of strings).

But despite everything, their “children” Tom and Jerry, who won the hearts of millions of viewers around the world, continue to live and with constant success delight all fans of animated films, making them burst into laughter at their inventive tricks and pranks.

« Tom and Jerry"(Tom and Jerry) is one of the most famous animated series, a funny story about the endless chases and fights of Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse.

The plot of the animated series Tom and Jerry / Tom and Jerry

Since time immemorial, cats have been chasing mice, and, as a rule, for the latter these pursuits end in tears. American animators William Hannah And Joseph Barbera decided to correct this injustice and give the mouse Jerry, whom they had drawn, the opportunity to take revenge for the entire mouse family by inventing the animated series “Tom and Jerry.” Thanks to his agility, resourcefulness and cunning, Jerry does not let go of his meowing brethren in the person of Tom, a rustic domestic cat who has a warm corner, a soft pillow and a bowl in which there is always something tasty. But what prevents Tom from living a quiet life (that is, purring with pleasure when he is scratched behind the ear, sleeping almost around the clock, scratching his claws on the master’s furniture, screaming at the top of his lungs as a cat in the spring) is that a weasel lives under the same roof with him. Jerry, always escaping the cat's clawed paws.

Starting from the very first episode, released almost 70 years ago, Tom has been trying to catch Jerry, but to no avail: the nimble rodent deftly avoids the traps set by Tom, managing to deliver another round of slaps to his offender.

The adventures of the famous cat and mouse are timeless classics of animation art and are loved by several generations of television viewers on both sides of the Atlantic. The series “Tom and Jerry” was awarded an Oscar seven times, which allows us to rightfully call it a true masterpiece of animation. Let's face it: they don't make cartoons like this today! What is the secret of the cosmic popularity of these characters, who do nothing but plot each other? And what do we take away from the colorful show?

Pan battles

Bright characters and inimitable facial expressions, cunning and naivety in one bottle, a sharp plot and dizzying adventures - this is just the beginning of the praise for “Tom and Jerry”. But, Totem Bison save you, showing these cartoons to small children will take a long time to deal with the consequences... Judging by the experience of friends whose little son grew up on “Cat and Mouse” literally from the potty, it would be better for the child to read a book! At first, the little one ran after his mother with a fork, as he had seen on TV more than once. Then he quietly climbed onto the cabinet and, laughing, threw the iron at dad. Fortunately, it didn’t hit, but the “unit” lay in ruins. He triumphantly covered his grandmother on the balcony in winter, threw tomatoes at passers-by and pestered girls with kisses “a la plunger.” In general, everything is according to the script from the cartoon.

But “Tom and Jerry” contains a lot of subtle humor and sarcasm, which are completely incomprehensible to a child’s mind - so the child takes everything at face value. In fact, only flat scenes with characters sometimes cruelly mocking each other remain in the child’s head. Often on the screen there is a substitution of concepts (a hand-drawn “play on words”), the revival of inanimate objects, and a distortion of the elementary laws of physics. It’s funny to us - it seems like a hopeless situation - but then the hero finds an unexpected loophole! But children begin to confuse what they see with what actually happens. The most dangerous thing is that they believe: stepping on a rake, getting hit by a car, hitting bricks with your head, placing a cactus on someone’s chair and swallowing firecrackers is noisy, funny, but not painful - and certainly not fatal.

It's not a childish matter

For an adult, this “cartoonish” aggression is completely harmless and not of primary importance: it is for a prepared mind that the series is generously peppered with non-children’s issues. One could even say that Tom and Jerry served as the “social encyclopedia” of its time. The differences between provincials and the “celestials” of Manhattan, sleek intellectuals and street “scum” from the working-class quarter are vividly outlined. A lot of attention is paid to American patriotism, references to the traditions of different cultures and various historical events (which you need to know to understand the essence of what is happening!)

Are you already 18?

An important theme in the adventures of truly mature characters is courtship of the opposite sex. The same bravado that looks funny from the outside - but not love. Why shouldn't children watch these hilariously funny scenes? – Firstly, the courtship of all the male characters looks, basically, in an exaggeratedly vulgar way: they either show off in front of the lady, blowing cigarette smoke in her face, and try to kiss and hug without asking, or they lose all self-esteem and turn into clowns . And when an opponent appears, “fights without rules” begin, where competitors do not hesitate to do anything to win. The “ladies” themselves, created for the amusement of an adult viewer, can also be divided into two categories: those who break like a sweet gingerbread and “peck” at the boyfriend’s money, or those who only know how to sit on the sofa, remain silent and allow the boyfriend what as much impudence as you like (as an option, silently hit him on the head with a sledgehammer). A child, alas, is not able to appreciate such a vulgar caricature of the characters. There were also dressing up men as women and accidental kisses by mistake (Tom confused either a rival cat, a bulldog, or even a head with a fifth point with the cat Toodles).

Hostages of "clichés"

Unbeknownst to himself, even an adult can seize on the stereotype “a cat hurts a mouse” and not be aware of the comedic, but still immorality of the mouse himself. After all, it is Jerry who, in more than half of the cases, is the instigator of all battles - and is the first to completely undeservedly offend the cat. Tom, naturally, immediately fights back and a chase begins, for which the child will always blame the evil cat. Meanwhile, Thomas is more good-natured, naive, and generally a little melancholic. While Jerry - a clever, inventive and quick-witted choleric - bullies him almost out of boredom. In several episodes it becomes clear that, if he wanted, he could twist ropes out of the cat and easily live with him in peace-friendship. Even the very first cartoon, aired back in February 1940, bore an unambiguous title: “Puss Gets The Boots” (but no, not “Puss in Boots”, but “Puss Gets a Kick with a Boot”). At first, the mouse was not even called Jerry, but Jinx, which means “the bringer of misfortune.”

Moral of the story

In general, adults will take one thing away from the series, but children will get something completely different: self-harm, subtleties of manipulation, games between two camps, friendship against a third, greed, meanness, deception, political incorrectness, inability to admit one is wrong and solve problems peacefully. However, among all this aggressive, unchildish humor, sparks of humanism flicker: the need to protect the weak and small, find a common language with one’s enemies and make peace. True, these instructive truths most often reach the heroes in the form of blows and bruises.

"The Great Silent" in animation

A feature of the early episodes of Tom and Jerry, in contrast to the full-length cartoons that followed, is non-verbal communication between the main characters. Sometimes the cat and the mouse exchanged short remarks, but mostly the speech is more than compensated by facial expressions, gestures, exclamations, laughter, colorful music and inscriptions (on the door, on the wall, on the doghouse, etc.) All desires, intentions and doubts characters are openly displayed on their faces, satisfying the “visual hunger” of the TV viewer and allowing them to enjoy emotions in their pure form - without a kind of socio-cultural filter. Most of the talk is from minor characters - the dog Spike, the stray cat Butch, the owner Mommy-two-slippers (the prototype for her creation was the Oscar-winning African-American actress Hattie McDaniel, who played the incomparable Mammy in Gone with the Wind) and others.

Let there be music!

Composer Scott Bradley made a huge contribution to the creation of the animated series, who actually breathed life into the drawn world. He wrote rich scores that combined expressive musical accompaniment for the action in the frame, elements of classical music, and popular jazz melodies of the middle of the last century. Bright, harmonious and memorable music became the final touch to funny scenarios - therefore the animated series invariably raises the mood and charges with positivity. Shake up the antiquity and relax to the symphonic fireworks of the “golden archive” of classics!

The main cathedral of the Church of Christ (Christ Church Cathedral) of the city of Dublin was founded in 1030, then it was rebuilt and completed, as usually happened in those days. In general, it turned out to be a pretty decent cathedral; if you wish, you can look at the photo gallery from some Czech tourist, but today we are interested in the organ installed in it.

We do not know when exactly this organ was installed, but it is known that in 1595 the organist was a certain John Fermor. We will assume that the organ and the organist appeared at the same time.

And in 1860, while cleaning the organ, a dead cat and rat were discovered in one of its pipes. In all likelihood, during the chase they all got stuck in the pipe. Thanks to the dry, holy air of the church, their bodies dried out and became mummified. No one knows how long they stayed there, but maybe as long as 265 years.

Now "Tom" and "Jerry" are exhibited in the crypt along with other exhibits.

Let's remember the history of the original cartoon:

The Tom and Jerry cartoon series was produced at Metro Goldwin Mayer Studios in Hollywood from 1940 until its closure in 1958. In early 1961, MGM sold all rights to the cartoon to the Prague studio Rembrandt Films, headed by Gene Deitch. Rembrandt Films was able to release 13 episodes, which were unsuccessfully called the worst in the entire history of the cartoon. The failure was due to the fact that all the gestures in the cartoon were at too high a speed, which made it difficult to see the characters themselves and spoiled the feeling of the film. The voice acting was done with ambient music with space effects, which no one understood. All dialogue was unclear. And by 1963, the production of Tom and Jerry returned to its homeland, to Hollywood, now in Sib-Tower 12 Productions with the head of Chuck Jones, which lasted until 1967. The rights to create the series also returned to the Hanna-Barbera studio (1975-1977; 1990-1993), and then went to Filmation Studios (1990-1992). Warner Bros. in 2005 she released her series - “The KarateGuard”.

The first series of cartoons produced by MGM between 1940 and 1958 are recognized as the most outstanding, and were also awarded seven Academy Awards.

Biographies of Tom and Jerry

"Tom and Jerry in childhood"

“Tom and Jerry” is the favorite cartoon of all time and probably every TV viewer wondered how these two characters met and what their childhood was like. In 1990, a series called Tom and Jerry as Children was released, directed by Robert Alvarez. Jerry in this cartoon is immediately recognizable, but Tom is difficult to recognize, since he is presented there as a small and angry kitten with a terrible character.

Failures

Several aspects of the film's making are unfortunate. Firstly, the viewer is left bewildered as to what exactly these two characters did not share - the original reason for the enmity is unclear. Secondly, in the old cartoon, where Tom and Jerry are already adults, the lifestyle of the 40-60s is reproduced, and in the new series, despite the youth of the characters, you can see modern household items. Thirdly, the house in which the cat and the mouse live is constantly changing: Tom either lives with a black mistress, who is distinguished by her plumpness, or with a slender white-skinned woman, or generally lives in a separate house.

A qualitatively new phenomenon in the history of this funny and beloved cartoon was the release in the same 1990 of the animated series “The Tom and Jerri Comedy Show”, in which the animation style remained unchanged, but a completely new format was presented: the episodes were half an hour long and consisted of a selection of several funny episodes. What was also new was that new characters appeared in the cartoon: a strict and demanding bulldog named Spike and the cheerful host of the cartoon Dog, nicknamed Droopy.

The best animators worked on the creation of this unique animated series, who were actively involved by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, for whom “Tom and Jerry” was their favorite child. Among the famous animators who contributed to this cartoon, it is worth special mentioning such as Ed Barge, Ray Patterson, Irwin Spence, Kenneth Muse. The script for many episodes was written by Joseph Barbera himself. However, these two producers were not at the very origins of the creation of the cartoon. Initially, back in 1940, when the first episode of the cartoon was released, its producer was Rudolf Eising, who at that time headed MGM (the animation department). And after that, until 1955, the cartoon was produced by Fred Quimby, who later left the animation. Few people know that in the very first version of the cartoon, the characters had completely different names - Jasper (cat) and Jinx (mouse).

Tom and Jerry even appeared in films: in 1945, Jerry talks and dances with Kelly in the film Anchors Aweigh. This original animation was done by Ray Patterson and Kenneth Muse.

Stages of creating Tom and Jerry

How did the Tom and Jerry cartoon appear in Russia? Several stages can be distinguished:

  • Despite the good relations between the USSR and the USA in the pre-war years, the first episodes of the cartoon were not broadcast in Russia.
  • The appearance of the series on Soviet television screens occurred only in the 80s with the appearance on the market of pirated video cassettes with low-quality recordings, one-voice translation performed by Alexander Gottlieb, Maxim Oshurkov, Alexander Dubrovin.
  • In 1993, the cartoon began to be broadcast on TV-6, since the co-owner of this channel was US media tycoon Ted Turner, along with cartoons about the sailor-voyager Popeye and short films from Warner Brothers.
  • In the mid-90s, Russians were shown the cartoon “Tom and Jerry as Children” on the NTV channel;
  • In the late 90s, “Tom and Jerry” was broadcast in the cartoon block along with such series as “The Jetsons” and “The Flintstones” on TNT and STS channels.
  • 2001 - broadcast on the RTR channel.

At this time, almost all channels are broadcasting a cartoon that is loved by Russian children and adults. On DVD, the cartoon is presented to Russian viewers in a translation by Yuri Zhivov.

In 1992, the long-awaited and very successful full-length cartoon was shot, in which a new hero appears - Starling. The public did not immediately accept this version of the Tom and Jerry story, since the full-length cartoon was significantly different from the usual style of their favorite series. The discovery of this cartoon was the fact that the entire cartoon characters were actively talking to each other.
