Where did the prayer in the evening rule come from and how to understand it?

This topic is very interesting and by no means simple, since the 67th Psalm can be considered the “father” of this beautiful and powerful prayer. Interpreters of the Psalter unanimously tell us that this psalm is very difficult to interpret. So, for example, blessed Augustine and Theodoret believed, and the famous pre-revolutionary researcher of the Holy Scriptures, the author of the voluminous and deep work “The Explanatory Bible,” Professor Alexander Pavlovich Lopukhin wrote the following: “This psalm, for its extraordinary conciseness of expression of thoughts, insufficient clarity of the text, abundance of images , was considered the most difficult to explain, and even insurmountable, which is why it was called “a cross for minds and a reproach for interpreters.”

It is not easy to give a detailed interpretation in one article. It is worthy of at least a fairly voluminous brochure. But nevertheless, with God’s help, we will try to unravel the leitmotif of this amazing psalm, and therefore our beloved evening prayer, into which the holy fathers very harmoniously and beautifully wove, of course, with the breath of the Holy Spirit, the initial verses of this Old Testament psalm, complemented by the prayer of the New Testament content. And from a literary point of view, this is “not sewn with white thread,” no. But the New Testament meaning of prayer flows organically from the Old Testament symbols, creating a single work that is integral in composition. As a single whole, the work of Christ’s salvation of humanity, begun in Old Testament times and continuing now - in the New Testament period.

So, what is this leitmotif, dear brothers and sisters?

The key to its understanding can be given to us by the troparion of the fourth song of the Paschal canon: “David, the Father of God, is playing before the ark of hay, but the holy people of God, seeing the images of the event, rejoice more divinely, as Christ is risen, as omnipotent.”

Many interpreters of the 67th Psalm agree that it was written by the holy prophet and King David on the occasion of the return of the Ark of the Covenant from Philistine captivity in the 11th century BC (after the Philistines, stricken with diseases, sent a cart with the shrine towards the Israelites, it stayed for about twenty years in the small Jewish forest town of Kiriath-jearim). The fifth and sixth chapters of the Old Testament “Second Book of Kings” say that the holy and very loving prophet and king David, by God’s providence, decided to return the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. Before this, his troops defeated the Philistines, whose technical and military strength was several times greater than the same potential of the Jews.

And finally, after more than twenty years, the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem. The Holy Scripture says: “David galloped with all his might before the Lord...” (2 Sam. 6:14). It was such a violent, uncontrollable and holy joy at the same time that his wife Michal condemned him in her heart. For this she was punished by God with infertility.

The Ark of the Covenant returned to Jerusalem after decades. The Great Shrine, and therefore God himself, visited His chosen people. This was a kind of concrete historical restoration of the Covenant between God and man, a symbol of the Almighty’s acceptance of man again into paradise. In fact, this event became an earthly image of paradise. The holy King David rejoiced with spiritual supreme joy, because he foresaw with his prophetic heart the Resurrection of Christ and the Savior’s bringing him, along with the rest of the Old Testament righteous, out of hell. David foresaw the salvation of humanity by the God-man...

That is why the verses of this psalm became the stichera of Easter, which we sing before our New Testament “Ark of the Covenant” - the Throne of God throughout Bright Week. Because for more than a thousand years the joyful melody of the Resurrection of Christ has already rung in them like an Easter “swallow”.

And this joy knew no bounds! And there will be no boundaries. This joy filled to the last atom of the body and to the last nook of the soul the entire being of the holy king and prophet. And she was bigger than him. And more peace, pouring out of David’s heart, like wine from an overflowing cup, dancing “with all his might,” a dance that did not remember itself, for human nature was then immersed in God.

Therefore, standing over our bed before going to bed, we mark it with a cross (some cross the bed like this: the headboard, then the legs, the right side and the left side) and our house on four sides, while reciting the verses of the wondrous 67th Psalm, woven into the evening prayer, and we believe that by the power of the Honest Life-Giving Cross and the triumph of the Resurrection of Christ, the enemies-demons depart from our beds and homes and hearts - and we can fall asleep, resting peacefully in God.

All worries, fears, passions and illnesses that now seem to us like huge and dark “Godzilla monsters” will disappear like smoke and melt like wax from the face of fire. After all, the Easter victory of Christ is our victory forever and ever. We, too, were resurrected in Him and also in Him we were victorious forever. It is important to remember this when emotional waves overwhelm our spiritual ship. You just need to raise your eyes and see that our Lord Jesus Christ stands nearby and extends His fatherly hand to us, and that the Ark of the Covenant, by the Bright Resurrection of Christ and the Sacrament of Baptism, has already entered our heartfelt Jerusalem and remains there. And may our hope, like the holy prophet and King David, “galloping while playing,” rejoice with all its might in this fact of the indestructible and indissoluble covenant of the union of God with man.

The lines of the Sunday prayer glorify Jesus Christ, who gave his life for humanity. A thousand years before the birth of Christ, King David wrote his psalms - the most ancient prayers. They are included in the liturgical texts, canons, included in the morning and evening Rules, and the monks learn them by heart. The collection includes many prophetic songs. For example, Psalm 67 begins with the words: “May God rise again...”. Later, these lines became the beginning of a hymn to the Honest (much-revered) Cross on which the Lord was crucified. The instrument of death turned into a symbol of victory over her.

Why are evil forces afraid of this prayer?

From the shameful personification of execution, the Lord erected a formidable remedy against the forces of the devil. The prayer mentions an event that Satan did not even know about, considering himself the ruler of the underworld. Christ, after death, descended into this terrible place and brought almost everyone out of there. Hell is empty. At Easter it is sung: “Death! where is your sting?! Hell! where is your victory?!”

The word “resurrection” means: striking a spark, fire (in the sense: armchair). When a person reads this prayer, making the sign of the cross, he invisibly strikes a flame that scorches the evil spirits. Therefore, when reading praise to the Life-giving Cross and the Resurrection of Christ, demons tremble and run away, unable to bear the burning sensation. Orthodox Christians know this well and successfully use powerful weapons.

What does prayer help with?

“May God rise again” is a special prayer, unlike others. All content is aimed specifically at the evil done by evil spirits, teaching people to commit lawlessness. It is believed that as many passions as there are in a person, there are as many demons that captivate him, not giving him the opportunity to renounce sin. By uttering words that disperse darkness and misfortune, we deprive the demons of their power. The prayer is read when:

• things don’t go well because of the evil being caused;
• are overcome by terrible dreams, fear attacks;
• what is happening around is the machinations of the devil;
• quarrels occur in the family for no apparent reason;
• people behave obscenely, utter obscenities, blasphemous speeches;
• you are threatened or in danger, you don’t know what to do;
• they rage, get drunk, take drugs, cannot get rid of addictions, etc.

May God rise again... is included in the evening Rule. Whoever performs it reads the prayer every day. In special difficult situations, the Life-Giving Cross is mentioned together with:

• Our Father
• Psalm 90
• Most honorable Cherub.

By reading them constantly, you gain tremendous strength to overcome any adversity. You win in a difficult task, no matter who interferes with its execution. Provided that what is asked is beneficial. A person does not always know what is best for him and what is worse. Therefore, add to your appeals the words: “But not my will, but Yours, Father (or Lord), be done.”
