International Museum Day(International Museum Day) appeared on the calendar in 1977, when at the next meeting of ICOM (International Council of Museums) the Russian organization’s proposal to establish this holiday was adopted. And since 1978, this day has been celebrated annually in more than 150 countries.
On this day, museums open their doors to everyone, completely free of charge and happily showing their exhibition halls, new exhibits, telling, educating and working in the spirit of the motto “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace different peoples." The opening of new exhibitions and festivals is timed to coincide with the holiday; thematic lectures, excursions, scientific readings, special classes for children are organized in museums, and museum and theatrical performances are held.

On this night, many museums close very late or are open all night. Entrance to the museums is free. The action is designed to bring cultural heritage closer to the viewer, to show through non-traditional acquaintance with museums and galleries the importance of museums in the life of society, as well as the diversity of the global museum community. Openness to spectators is the main motto of “museum night” around the world.
Museums are our history, these are the places where the most valuable things ever invented and created by man are stored. Therefore, museums should be closer to society and completely open to it.
The world community must develop and maintain the condition of museums and all objects stored in them.
That's why International Museum Day was established with the aim of attracting the attention of the powers that be to the state of museum values and the expansion of museums. To make this a reality, museums must correspond to reality, work in the style of the new time and accept innovations that appear in the world.
Each International Museum Day has a theme, and the International Committee of Museums always provides an overview of activities related to the theme, making them accessible to everyone. The themes of International Museum Day are devoted to various issues, such as the responsibility of museums to society, the illegal export of cultural property, museums for a peaceful and harmonious life in society, and others. So the theme of 1997-1998. was "The fight against the illegal movement of cultural property", the theme of 2005 was "Museum - a bridge between cultures", 2008 - "Museums as a factor of social change and development", 2009 - "Museums and tourism", 2010. - "Museums for Social Harmony", 2011 - "Museums and Memory. On August 17, Marks will host one of the largest cultural events in the Saratov region, included in the TOP-200 events in Russia - the Bread Pier festival. The event will take place at the pier in Marks, called “Bread” because it was here that ships with bread sent to the Volga region by Fridtjof Nansen as humanitarian aid in the famine-stricken 30s of the last century were unloaded.
