The Boys are an English punk rock band formed in London in 1976. The composition of the group was selected from members of other groups, "London SS" and "Hollywood Brats". They were guitarist and vocalist Honest John Plain, vocalist and bassist Duncan "Kid" Reid, drummer Jack Black, keyboardist and vocalist Casino Steel, and guitarist and vocalist Matt Dangerfield (Matt Dangerfield). The directive of the young musicians was simple, but very correct - to create a group strong enough to “outdo” pop music bands, maintain punk standards, but at the same time play enough melodic music to get into the mainstream.

In 1977, their first single, "I Don't Care," was released, and in support of this release, they toured with John Cale of the Velvet Underground.

In the same 1977, the first album was released under the simple name “The Boys”, and this album was later called one of the best releases of the 1970s.

On July 27, 1977, the group’s second single, “First Time”/“Watcha Gonna Do”/“Turning Grey,” was released, and after that the five punk musicians drew the attention of the very famous and influential DJ from BBC Radio 1, John Peel. . So, at Peel’s invitation, the musicians made a recording for his program, and their composition immediately became the “single of the week” in Sounds magazine. The group's single "The Boys" was very confidently going up in the British charts, and this continued exactly until August 16, 1977, when Elvis Presley died. So, after the death of Elvis, everyone involved in the recording and related industries urgently began to play and publish his posthumous recordings.

The new album "The Boys" was released in 1978 under the "NEMS" logo, it was called "Alternative Chartbusters", and the group, along with the "Ramones", went on tour in support of it.

They were then called the “punk Beatles”, and whether this was good or bad for the team is difficult to say. On the one hand, “The Boys” were too “pop” for the punk music standards of those times, on the other hand, they were “too punk” for the existing pop scene. So, according to music analysts, the group found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Meanwhile, in 1979, the guys released a new album - "To Hell with the Boys", and this album became a real breakthrough - it was placed at number 4 on the UK Indie Chart. Some of the team's compositions were also on the charts at that time - "Kamikaze", "You Better Move On", "Terminal Love".

In the summer of 1981, the group broke up - many reasons were given for their disintegration, when it seemed that very little separated them from real success. Be that as it may, before this they released their last album - "Boys Only".

The guys later switched the letters "B" and "Y" in their group name and became "Yobs", releasing four singles and one album under this name, "Christmas Album" in 1980. However, this undertaking could not be called successful.

The Boys' reunion took place in the late summer of 1999, when four of the former members began performing occasionally under the name "The Boys" again. A couple of singles were also released - "Svengerland"/"Only A Game" in 2002 and "Jimmy Brown"/"Walk My Dog" in 2008.

It is known that in 2010 the musicians started a side project, this time under the name “Mattless Boys”.

According to the general opinion of musicians and music critics, the collapse of the group "The Boys" at one time caused enormous damage to the entire British pop-punk rock, however, even what they did was enough to have a very strong influence and lay the foundations of the pop-punk genre.

Millions of fans, daily concerts and hits that became popular all over the world overnight - this was the life of the boy band members during the years of triumph.

History of creation and composition

The history of the enchanting popularity of the Backstreet Boys began in 1993 in the city of Orlando (in Florida). Three ordinary teenagers - AJ McLean, Nick Carter and Howie Dorough - were knocking on the threshold of musical castings and all kinds of auditions.

The young men dreamed of connecting their biography with the stage and fame. After some time, the young people decided to organize their own trio, fortunately, their tastes in music coincided.

However, the three singers did not stay together for long: soon Kevin Richardson joined the lineup, who in turn invited his cousin Brian Littrell to the team.

They didn’t think about the name for long - “Backstreet Boys” was the name of the local market, which in the evenings turned into a place for youth get-togethers and parties. This translates into Russian as “Guys from the backyard.”

Soon the first performance of the newly-minted team took place - the young people sang for visitors to the aquarium. The administration of the entertainment center liked the mini-concert, and the Backstreet Boys began to be invited to sing in shopping centers, at the opening of exhibitions and in nightclubs. Gradually the group became famous.

Music

Already at the beginning of 1994, the guys managed to sign a contract with Jive Records. In the experienced hands of the producers, “Backstreet Boys” slightly adjusted their performance style and in July presented the debut single “We"ve got it going on” to the public. Surprisingly, this song did not find a response at all among the Americans, but it reached the top of the charts in record numbers -lists in many European countries. After recording several more compositions, the Backstreet Boys went on their first tour of Europe.

After some time, the musicians were nevertheless noticed in their native United States, and then in Canada. The first Backstreet Boys album eventually became one of the most anticipated records in the whole world. It was released in April 1996. Immediately after the release of the album, the group went on a new tour, and upon returning, the guys again “sat down” in the studio, starting work on new compositions.

In 1997, a record was released called “Backstreet's Back,” which fans remembered for the compositions “Anywhere For You” and “Quit Playing Games.” The artists also recorded several videos and, as is tradition, went on a world tour.

The popularity of this album had not yet subsided when the Backstreet Boys presented the world with another collection of new songs, “Millennium” - “Millennium”. The title of the album, released in 1999, echoed the passing of the previous millennium. The record, also by tradition, started in first place on all kinds of music charts and stayed there for more than one month.

Millennium was perhaps the boy band's most successful album: the record received five Grammy nominations, and the songs "Lager Than Life", "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" and "The One" are still popular. A year later, the fourth Backstreet Boys album, Black & Blue, was released. This name - “Black and Blue” - appeared for a reason. The fact is that at the photo shoot dedicated to the release of the new record, all members of the group were dressed in black, while the background was blue.

Like the previous album, “Black & Blue” started at the top of the music charts and sales rankings, but stayed there for only a couple of weeks, after which the popularity of the new compositions began to decline. And only the composition “Shape Of My Heart” was heard on music radio stations for a long time. In addition, the recording of the group’s joint performance with the musicians performed the song “Friends Never Say Goodbye” became popular.

In 2001, the Backstreet Boys musicians summed up their creativity by releasing a collection of their best hits, “The Hits: Chapter One.” In addition, the album also included a new composition called “Drowning”. At the same time, the artists upset fans with the message that the group was taking a creative break for an indefinite period. The musicians decided to spend this time on solo projects.

It wasn't until 2004 that Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough and Brian Littrell took the stage together again. Soon the musicians released new compositions, which marked the beginning of work on the next boy band record. The album was released in 2005. Its title, “Never Gone,” was a dedication to Kevin Richardson’s father, who had died shortly before. The album managed to repeat the success of previous albums, earning platinum status in many countries.

A year later, the musicians again upset fans in an interview by announcing that Kevin Richardson was leaving the band. The next record - “Unbreakable” - was recorded without Kevin. This album turned out to be a little more “heavy” in sound: the Backstreet Boys composed several compositions in the pop-rock genre, which was new to them. The album received favorable reviews from critics, but never became popular.

After this album, the Backstreet Boys took a break from work again. Musicians could only be seen at performances, but even those gradually became less and less frequent. And only in 2012 the team returned to full-fledged creative activity, and with the old lineup: Kevin Richardson returned to the team. At the end of 2012, radio stations were already playing a new song by the musicians - “It"s Christmass Time Again.”

The following year became an anniversary year for the artists - the group turned 20 years old. In honor of this date, a Backstreet Boys star was unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The musicians decided to celebrate their anniversary by touring and went on a tour that lasted two years. The group traveled to the countries of North and South America, Asia, Europe and even Oceania. The Boys recorded 4 studio albums, the third of which, To Hell with the Boys, became an indie hit in Britain (#4 UK Indie Chart, 1980), and 8 singles, three of which were “Kamikaze” (#9, 1980), Terminal Love (#30, 1980) and “You Better Move On” (#32, 1980) also entered the indie charts. Under the moniker The Yobs, the quartet released four Christmas records: one album and three singles, some of which were funny, others, according to Trouser Press, defiantly offensive, such as the Christmas "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht"), a stylized to the Nazi anthem.

Among the reasons that prevented the quartet, which had success in all countries of Western Europe, but not in its homeland, from entering the major league of British punk, was the fact that “they were not dressed - nor<магазин>Sex, nor Malcolm McLaren". The reputation of the "punk Beatles" also served the group badly.

There were also more serious factors. The group, according to Trouser Press, was "too soft-core pop to be punk, but too punk to be considered power pop." The Boys were chronically unlucky (problems with the label, as well as the American quartet of the same name) - in a word (as reviewer Jim Green notes), they were definitely “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

In August 1999, four members of the original line-up reformed The Boys and have since performed sporadically at festivals and concerts. Following successful London performances, the band released a new single, "Jimmy Brown", in December 2008.
