TV Program magazine became the first publication to which Kristin told about his impressions of performing at Eurovision 2017. Christian Kostov, if anyone has forgotten, is a Euro silver medalist. Now the 17-year-old guy is vacationing in Bulgaria, which, in fact, he represented at the song competition.

— Christian, how is your life going after participating in the show?

- Well, to be honest, I’ve somehow already forgotten about Eurovision, I’m moving forward, my team is working on the next projects, on the next songs, we’re working on the album. In July I’m flying to Stockholm, where I’ll be writing songs in seven different studios with different people over the course of several days. What will come of this is not yet clear. We will leave the best compositions for the album. In Bulgaria, during Eurovision, I became a national hero: people recognize me, cars stop on the roads...

— The number of subscribers on social networks has increased.

— Yes, in general, many doors have opened before us. Many wrote, including Nikolai Baskov, Sergei Lazarev... Many Russian stars sent their proposals for cooperation. Well, or they just supported me, they want to stay in touch. Foreign stars, jury members and producers of the British show X-Factor do the same. Some people want my songs to be rotated on various radio stations; they expect new material from me.

— Did Basque and Lazarev really offer to sing a duet?

— Nikolai asked if I was going to sing anything in Russian at all. I don’t know whether it was for cooperation or not, but he said that he really wanted to meet, and then, as they say, we’ll see. Sergey Lazarev simply congratulated and supported. Dmitry Bilan also congratulated. I was on Dima’s team - in the children’s “Voice”. It’s nice... Bloggers want to collaborate with me, shoot various videos, and they immediately invited me to “Let Them Talk.”

— Did the fact that you were the youngest participant in the Eurovision contest give you any advantage?

“During the competition, no one treated me condescendingly, never mistook me for a child or singled me out. On the contrary, they demanded more from me, they said: you’re young, come on, work... Although the fact that I turned out to be the youngest Eurovision participant really played into my hands. People are interested when someone stands out in some way.

— Let’s say, from a psychological point of view, it doesn’t bother you that you always fall just short of first place... Bulgarian X-Factor, Russian “The Voice”, “Eurovision”...

- This helps me not to lose my tone and strive for victory all the time. Fight like it's the last time. I still think that I was worthy of victory both in the Bulgarian X-Factor and at Eurovision. Although... Although I don’t argue: other people were worthy. I am pleased with my second place at Eurovision and I think that everything was absolutely fair. I admire the Portuguese, he has a great song, his own style of singing, he stands out among us all...

—Have you communicated?

- To be honest, no. The team was very protective of the artist, trying not to let him communicate, because he has serious health problems. The organizers asked us not to comment on this fact at all. Moreover, for a long time I didn’t even know about the Portuguese, I didn’t hear about him, he was nowhere... Salvador appeared out of nowhere and won. It was very unexpected.

— Do you consider Eurovision a politicized competition?

— I don’t argue, yes, there is such an aspect. But I think that music won this year - the songs that took the first two positions won (I’m not talking about the performers, including myself, but specifically about the songs). The Eurovision revolution, an unexpected turn of events. True, I didn’t think at all that I would get into the top 5, like the same Portuguese. I thought that a song from Denmark would win, a typical Eurovision hit... It would be logical. Or Italy, or France, which has long been saying that it wants to win. Yes, we expected it to be a political competition, but everything turned out to be completely different. All the people were kind, everyone supported each other, an unexpectedly pleasant atmosphere. I really think that this is a great holiday for all musicians.

— Did you experience any harassment? Were there any provocations?

- Not one at all.

— By the way, how did the artists react to this prank with their bare butts on stage?

- We didn't even notice. I don't think anyone noticed at all. I learned about this prank after Eurovision. This is, of course, a complete nightmare. Although five years in prison?! Well, I don’t know... Complete nonsense! By the way, I don’t understand how this could even happen. There were a lot of guards there, but the man just went on stage... Thank God that he just showed part of his body, but he could have hit. Be that as it may, in terms of organization everything was perfect. Kyiv received us, artists, simply amazing.

— The Ukrainians weren’t very supportive of you, to put it mildly. This is, to some extent, also politics.

“I hope that they just didn’t like my song, my production... I would like to hope that there were no political motives.”

— Who supported you during the competition?

— Almost half of my family came to Eurovision. They have supported me all my life - in everything. Whatever I choose for myself, my family supports and helps me. I am very grateful to my loved ones. Many of my peers, my friends, my classmates have problems with their parents. No, these are not bad parents, they don’t behave in any strange way. No! They just decide everything for their child, indulging their own whims. I live my own life, I do what I want, and not what my parents want from me. And this is very pleasant: they trust me, calmly let me go to other countries... No problems! And it's priceless.

— You started studying music by watching your brother play the piano.

— Daniel, in principle, made me a whole. He seriously studied music with me from the moment I got on my feet. My brother was always there, always guiding. I am his copy, we write songs together.

—Where do you spend most of your life? Russia, Bulgaria?

— I don’t have an answer to this question, because everything is very spontaneous. First I live in Moscow for a long time, then in Bulgaria for a long time. I was recently in Madrid, before that in London and Tel Aviv. I travel constantly, perform everywhere and slowly become a man of the world. I don't believe that home is where your homeland is. The Russian mentality burns within me, even the Moscow one, I would say. Moscow is generally a city-power. I can’t imagine my life anywhere other than Moscow. On the one hand, this is a city too crowded with people, where there is a very different culture, very different architecture, a city from which sometimes you really want to leave. On the other hand, I understand that I will not be able to live anywhere as comfortably as in Moscow.

— You preferred to study at the local gymnasium.

— Yes, and I’m going to finish school in Moscow. And only then I’ll go to America to study (at Berklee College of Music. - Auto.). For four years. But I will definitely return.

— How did you study in preparation for the performance in Kyiv? Did you have to forget about your lessons?

“It won’t work out that way, because I have the Unified State Exam coming up, and it won’t pass on its own.” I studied and study via Skype with teachers. They don't leave me alone, yeah (Laughs.)

— And how often are you in touch with them? Every day?

- Once a week. Unfortunately, there is no time at all. Tonight is the only time in the last month and a half that I have finally found myself at home.

— What kind of offer was it - to split the prize by coming to Moscow if you took first place at Eurovision?

- Many people misunderstood me. I would like to be heard through the TV program. It was just a joke - on bloggers who make these kinds of videos. Like, I received an award for a million subscribers on YouTube - let me break it or, say, cut it in half! This always irritated me, I didn’t understand it. On the other hand, it was a kind of metaphor: if I won, I would like to share the victory with the whole team. Unfortunately, people didn't get the joke. They didn't understand what I wanted to say. This once again confirms my belief that it is better not to say anything unnecessary.

- This is friendship, nothing more. She and I are like brother and sister. We lived with her during the X Factor, reached the final of the same year, always helped each other, supported each other, were there for each other. It so happened that we are rivals who compete with each other in everything. That's why we are friends and sincerely appreciate each other's work. We are more rivals than friends or colleagues. We compete, and this helps us move forward. We compete in the number of subscribers on social networks and listening to songs.

— So, it turns out that your fans have a chance to meet you and build relationships?

- Certainly! I am free. If you have any thoughts and desires, write to me on Instagram.

—Are you happy about your popularity?

— So far I don’t see any disadvantages - only advantages. I hope everything continues like this.

Bulgaria's representative at Eurovision 2017 was in the center of public attention due to his scandalous interview and performance in Crimea in 2014.

Eurovision 2017 continues to acquire more and more scandalous details. First, singer Jamala was not allowed onto the red carpet at the opening of the international song competition, then participants from three participating countries were accused.

Now the representative from Bulgaria, 17-year-old Christian Kostov, has come to the attention of journalists and the public.

At first, the guy managed to disgrace himself with provocative statements. In an interview with one of the publications, Christian said that if he wins Eurovision 2017, he will return to Moscow and smash his award.

I hope that I will return to Moscow with a “crystal microphone”. What will I do? I'll break it! And I’ll make a video that will get a lot of views!

A contestant from Bulgaria declared.

After this, videos and information appeared on the Internet that Christian Kostov performed in Crimea, two weeks after its occupation by Russia.

In response to such accusations, representatives of the SBU stated that at that time Kostov was only 14 years old, so he did not bear responsibility for his speech.

Today, Christian is the leader of bookmaker forecasts for the second semi-final, in which the singer will perform the song “Beautiful Mess”.

In 2014, Muscovite Christian Kostov became a finalist in the show “The Voice. Children” from Dima Bilan’s team. In 2017, he went to Eurovision in Kyiv under the flag of Bulgaria. He won second place, became famous throughout the world and... returned to Moscow.

Christian spoke to HELLO.RU about why he left Russia, why he returned, about musical ambitions, family values, attachment to roots and the simultaneous desire to take root around the world.

Christian comes to our meeting straight from the airport: now the 17-year-old singer is in such a dynamic state that it seems his “battery” is not one hundred percent full, but two hundred percent. Only in the morning he was in Sofia, giving an interview on Bulgarian television, and the day before he had hardly slept - his friends threw him a farewell party. After the TV show, go straight to the plane to Moscow. Here, Christian has already planned out every minute: he will alternate public events with typical activities for a teenager - for example, taking the Unified State Exam, for which he literally had to prepare on his knees during rehearsals. This year Christian will graduate from the Shuvalov Gymnasium, but, unlike his classmates, he will not have the last “free summer” before university: performances, interviews, photo shoots, endless flights.

It's important to act quickly here! In fact, there is only a month after Eurovision before they forget about you,

Christian speaks, pronouncing each line loudly, as if in an explosion. Christian refuses the signature “stone” pies at the Christian restaurant, where the interview was symbolically scheduled. It’s as if he doesn’t feed on food at all, but on this own internal emotional volcano.

Christian Kostov, silver medalist of Eurovision 2017
For the last five months, due to preparations for Eurovision, Christian has been living in Bulgaria. However, it is in Moscow that his home is: his parents, brother and sister live here, his school friends and his first love are here. According to Christian, he even missed the severe cold, being in warmer Bulgaria in winter, and therefore he was glad to return home in all respects.

You haven't been to Moscow for six months and now you're back. What emotions are you experiencing now?

We met a lot of fans at the airport! I go into the arrivals hall, I’m still slightly stressed - I’m terribly afraid of flying, I hear them screaming! Most people who walked by didn’t understand: “What is this? Who is this?”, but they stopped and took pictures on their phones. We gave so many gifts! Moreover, the majority are the same girls who have supported me since “The Voice. Children”. Everyone has grown a head, some have dyed their hair, some have lost 10 kilograms. In general, I immediately got the feeling: I’m home.

Do you remember all those fan girls?

I remember everyone, completely. Even the names of most of them. Before Eurovision, there were 12 thousand people in my official fan club, now there are 15. And Instagram just exploded: before the competition there were 70 thousand, now there are 230. It’s a shame that the competition was not broadcast in Russia. That way I would definitely have half a million (laughs).

Daria Igityan (HELLO.RU) and Christian Kostov at the Christian restaurant

If you had gone from Russia, then the competition would have been broadcast and you would have returned as a national hero straight to your homeland...

It is almost impossible to imagine such a possibility. Even without "practically". Firstly, the process of selecting a contestant from Russia is very closed. Secondly, Dima Bilan, Sergei Lazarev, Polina Gagarina played for the country, and then 17-year-old Christian, whom no one knows. As a viewer, I would be outraged.

How did it happen that you came from Bulgaria? I understand that your rise in show business there began in 2015 with the X-Factor show.

I am half Bulgarian: my father was born in Yambol, my mother is from Kazakhstan, from the Kokchetav region. They met while studying in Moscow, thirty years ago, and stayed here. My brother was born, then me and my sister. Every summer my family and I go on vacation to Bulgaria, where we have a house by the sea. And then one day - it was a year after “The Voice. Children” - we were walking with my father, and then he jokingly said: “Why are you famous in Russia, but don’t want to glorify your surname in my homeland?” Just at that time, castings for X-Factor were going on. And we, as a kind of “fan”, decided: why not try it. In Bulgaria I had no audience at all... But when the casting managers found out that I was a graduate of the Russian “Voice”, they showed interest: for Bulgaria, Russia is such a big mama. I filled out the form, and they started calling me endlessly, asking if I would definitely come, or if I had changed my mind? But all this backstory did not reach the jury, I came out to them simply as Christian Kostov, there were no enthusiastic emotions on their faces - until I sang. By the way, I myself was terribly unhappy with my performance at the audition.

What happened next?

After the competition ended, I signed a contract with the production center Virginia Records, began to perform a lot in Bulgaria, and then I was invited to represent the country at Eurovision. Bulgaria strives to be young, progressive, dynamic - and although there were other applicants, let's say, older, the country was not afraid to take a risk by sending me. Moreover, at first I did not accept the offer: firstly, I was wildly tired - for the last few years I literally wandered from one competition to another, and secondly, deep down I understood - well, this is not my thing, the competitive atmosphere. And then suddenly I thought - why not. The whole country believed in me! And I took a risk following those who believed in me.

I am sure that Bulgaria has never regretted sending you. The number of points you scored and the place you took became a record for the country.

That's for sure, people's love for me intensified after Eurovision. When I arrived there several years ago from Moscow, I was a stranger. And now he’s returned with “silver” and everyone says: “Here he is! Our boy.”

In Russia, by the way, they also say this: they say that Muscovite Kostov went to Kyiv, deceived the system, and won a prize.

I will say this, I am pleased to be “my boy” everywhere. I generally consider myself a person of peace and the embodiment of the Eurovision slogan - celebrate diversity. And all thanks to my family, it’s multinational and outrageously “wild”: we all love extreme sports, creativity, and travel. My sister draws, my brother writes songs, I sing - such an atmosphere of inspiring madness. Half of my family members are Muslims, half are Christians. We celebrate holidays of both religions, and all this has taught me since childhood to respect people without reference to their origin. I am half Asian, half European, I live in Russia, I study many languages. Recently, for example, I returned from Madrid and became interested in Spanish.

What languages have you already mastered?

I speak Russian, English, and Bulgarian fluently. I understand a little Kazakh and Japanese, I read French... (at this moment, smiling slyly, he pronounces several sentences in pure French, as if he knows it like a native. - Ed.)

So which country do you plan to connect your future career with?

Russia has a very large market, and I definitely wouldn’t want to lose it, especially since my interest is now on the rise. Therefore, I am now working on new material, including in Russian. I'll say this. Now my aspirations are distributed as follows: 50 percent for the whole world, 50 percent separately for Russia.

In such a situation, it would be very timely to find the right producer in Russia.

Nowadays there is no need for a producer at all. There is the Internet, there is YouTube, there is Spotify, you put tracks there, promote them correctly - and that’s it, the process has started. There is no point in signing a contract and being enslaved by someone; it is not profitable even from a commercial point of view. You get your five percent, roughly speaking, and be happy. If you start from scratch, maybe it makes some sense, but otherwise... In my case, the European system is more suitable: Ed Sheeran is the same, he does not depend on anyone, he is engaged in creativity. There are Sony and other “records” that support and promote it, but they do not affect creativity and self-expression in any way.

It’s worth making a small digression here. Christian came to the interview with HELLO.RU together with his older brother Dani, who has long been nicknamed in the media the “gray eminence” of his success. Christian and Dani are like two peas in a pod, at least that's what it seems at first glance. But when the brothers start talking, it becomes clear: they are completely different in temperament and complement each other - sort of like the young Meladze brothers. It was Dani who pushed Christian to the stage, while he himself, no less creative, chose to remain in the shadows, write music for his brother and carefully study the mechanisms of production, so that in the future he would personally be involved in Christian’s career when it took off. And Dani believed in what would happen from the very beginning.

Christian will have his own, special story. I always knew this. When he was a child, he just started singing, everyone said that he couldn’t do it. And I knew that he would achieve a lot. All my predictions about him are coming true. I feel it like this: like a tree that you planted and are waiting for it to grow,” says Dani Kostov.

Brother already sees you as a big star. What kind of artist do you see yourself in the foreseeable future?

I definitely don’t want to be like anyone. I am Christian Kostov - as in life, as on stage. During performances, I want to do whatever comes to my mind at the moment: jump into the audience, drag out fans, improvise. At the same time that I record the album and - I hope! - I’m going on tour, I want to be sure that I’ve worked everything out thoroughly, just down to every millimeter. I imagine it like this: a show in the fusion style, powerful dance support, sex on stage, like Usher, but also soulful episodes - lyrical, musical, like Ed Sheeran does. I would also add a little k-pop style, I still have Asian roots. In general, such a mix, a batch, but in the center of this batch is me, Christian Kostov.

It looks like you are planning to improve your skills before the world tour. How else can you explain that you entered Berklee College in Boston - one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the world. It must have been difficult to get there?

I entered there back in November. It was really very difficult. I had to study a lot of pitfalls, documentation, all sorts of details - here my brother, of course, helped. First of all, you had to fill out a form on the website and pay an initial fee - this way they weed out those who cannot afford it. Then you send information about yourself, documents from school. Then you fly to Europe, where they hold castings.

My brother and I went to Germany; friends from Moscow provided us with an apartment for four days. The casting itself took place very quickly and very nervously. There were several blocks. First, I sang If I Ain't Got You by Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder's Superstition. Then they tested my hearing, I had to determine the notes. Then there was improvisation: the pianist plays, and you have to immediately come up with lyrics with him and sing.

I went through all the stages and entered the “semi-budget” class, but there is a chance to transfer to the full budget if I do well in the sessions. Tuition there costs 60 thousand dollars a year (you pay 40 for college and another 20 for living). I have a huge incentive to study well; I am not ready to ask my father to pay for me under any circumstances. So in 2018 I’m going to Berkeley and starting!

Do you have the feeling that during your studies you will lose the audience you are currently working for?

I have nothing to lose! I will write music, release vlogs, do covers, and be online all the time. Moreover, what is stopping me from advancing there, in America? Recently, my idol, Stevie Mackey, the vocal coach of Selena Gomez and J.Lo, who now works on the American The Voice, wrote to me on Instagram. I was the first to send him a direct message and didn’t think I would get a response. And he listened to my recordings and wrote that he wanted to meet me and was waiting for me to arrive. This is very cool. This is inspiring!

In general, you have only music in your head. The fans who met you at the airport will probably read this interview and hope that you will say at least a couple of lines about love.

I'll tell you! I had the experience of a serious relationship, but, unfortunately, it was unsuccessful. It's my fault because I couldn't be there. We are now communicating with this girl and are friends. But at the moment I am absolutely free, so girls... (Laughs). And yes, I am one of those people who is “taken” by something simple and very real. All this Insta-beauty, make-up, lips, contrived poses are not for me. Be yourself, girls! Smile. Nowadays a sincere smile is truly exotic.

One of the favorites of Eurovision was the representative of Bulgaria and Russian citizen Christian Kostov.
Christian has already performed well and reached the final and can become the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. The British publication Metro, citing bookmakers' data, claims that the former favorite - Italian Francesco Gabbani - is rapidly being overtaken by the youngest participant in the competition, 17-year-old Christian Kostov. The publication notes that it will be quite difficult to get ahead of Gabbani, however, in recent days, bookmakers have recorded a steady increase in bets on the young singer representing Bulgaria at the competition.
