The Tabakov Theater is often lovingly called “Tabakerka”. Not for its resemblance to a small snuff box, but for its consonance with the name of its creator and permanent leader for almost thirty years - Oleg Pavlovich Tabakov.

How it all began

Back in 1978, in the basement of one of the residential buildings on Chaplygina Street, or rather in house No. 1, a new stage space appeared, which almost ten years later received the official name - the Tabakov Theater-Studio. His first actors were Oleg Pavlovich's students at GITIS: Sergei Gazarov, Elena Mayorova, Mikhail Khomyakov, Igor Nefedov and others.

On October 29, the Tabakov Theater wrote the first line in its history. It was a production of “And in the spring I will return to you...” based on the play of the same name by A. Kazantsev. Later other works were published. The first poster included performances:

Official recognition

Tabakov's theater-studio, which initially did not have its own place, was forced to wander around different stage venues. But its artistic director managed to achieve government support. And on March 1, 1987, the new venue of the Tabakov Theater-Studio officially opened, the first production was the play “The Armchair” (literary basis - the story by Yu. Polyakov).

For many years, the theater troupe was replenished by Oleg Pavlovich's students, whom he nurtured as a caring father to his children. The director made attempts to legitimize the existence of his studio, but they were unsuccessful. And a few years before the collapse of the USSR, an unspoken “profession ban” was adopted in the country. It led to the closure of many theaters, and Oleg Pavlovich’s wards were among the victims. However, even despite this, the team continued to gather and prepare premieres, albeit at night. This continued until one day the leading actress of “The Proletarian Mill of Happiness” was detained at her “main job,” as a result of which the performance had to be cancelled. Then Tabakov realized that he could not defeat the system, and he disbanded the cast.

New life of the theater
