When preparing for a trip to Helsinki, I, as usual, studied the reports of travelers who had already been there. And here doubts began to overcome me, since many reviews about the capital of Finland were not very positive. Most people wrote that the city was gray and boring, and there was nothing to do there for more than one day. But for some reason I didn’t believe it. And then I began to read everything I found on the Internet about Helsinki. The more I read, the more I wanted to get to Finland as soon as possible. Now I was already overcome by doubts of a different kind: how to fit everything I wanted to see into the 5 days allotted for the trip?!
I was especially struck by the fact that in Helsinki you can find more than 600 buildings in the Art Nouveau or Art Nouveau style. And there are even entire neighborhoods with houses in this style.
In general, these same neighborhoods were included in my list must see.


So, let's admire the beautiful buildings...

The first in my queue was an area considered one of the most expensive in Helsinki, with the beautiful name Eira:

Initially, the area, where today there are narrow streets and shady alleys of local parks, was considered unpromising due to its distance from the city center. Then it was decided to build here several factories necessary at that time for the development of Finnish industry. Fortunately, these plans never came to fruition, and today the Eira district with its three-story stone mansions is a living reminder of what the whole of Helsinki would have looked like if it had managed to avoid the architectural madness of the 60s:

Before visiting Eira, we walked along the embankment and admired the beautiful views of the Gulf of Finland:

But I'll tell you about this some other time. Having reached the place where, according to the map and our calculations, the streets of Eira should begin, we turned off the embankment:

Over there, from behind their lush crowns, appeared the spire of the Church of Michael Agricola, one of the two most famous buildings on Factory Street (Tehtaankatu). And although the church is listed in the Punavuori district, it is located practically in Eira:

The sign indicates that the church appeared here in 1935. And the architect was none other than Lars Sonck, the same one who designed the building Helsinki City Museum , which I already talked about:

It’s interesting that the district got its name from the hospital, and it, in turn, got it from the Stockholm hospital, which was named after the Icelandic goddess of healing, Eir:

By the way, this building was designed by Lars Sonck, already familiar to us.
It’s amazing how different two works by the same architect, built thirty years apart and several houses away, can be: a fabulously cozy hospital building, made in Art Nouveau, as opposed to the inhospitable constructivism of a church:

The magnificent villa, commissioned by a merchant for his wife, is reminiscent of Central European city residences and, in a graceful, graceful bow, demonstrates the best features of the Art Nouveau style:
