It would seem that what new can be invented about the world after the end of the world? Ruins, mutants, ragamuffins - this topic has been exhausted to the bottom by Mad Max, Fallout and others like them. But the creators of the Adventure Time series proved that there is no end to human imagination. Their version of the post-apocalypse is the magical land of Ooo, filled with absurdity and psychedelia. Even in a world where there are almost no people left, there is always a place for magic and adventure.

Adventure Time was started in 2009 by American producer Pendleton Ward, who posted a short animated video on YouTube about a boy and his dog living in a post-apocalyptic environment.

From this video a series grew on the Cartoon Network channel, which pleased both children and adults. Children appreciated the bright characters, adventures and light humor, and adults appreciated the jokes, hints and references that were incomprehensible to children. We can say that it was with “Adventure Time” that the current boom in animated series for the whole family began, which was continued by “Gravity Falls”, “The Other Side of the Fence” and “Steven Universe”.

The plot of the series develops on Earth, which survived a nuclear war, later known as the Mushroom War (did we warn you that there would be adult jokes?). In addition, the fall of the comet led to the disappearance of an entire continent and a serious change in the landscape. In the end, only two-thirds of the planet survived (sorry, Eurasia). In addition, as a result of the expansion of the Sun, Mercury was destroyed, so that the Earth became not the third, but the second planet from the Sun.

Apart from the destruction of civilization and the death of billions of people, everything turned out very well. In the fields scorched by nuclear bombs, a new world has appeared, full of magic and amazing creatures (who would have thought that mutation could be so funny!). Is there post-apocalypse and chaos around? So it's time for adventure.

Time for heroes

The main characters of the series are a simple boy named Finn and his faithful friend, the yellow dog Jake. Unless, of course, you can call a dog a creature that can take any shape you like and infinitely increase in size.

Finn and Jake are inseparable friends, almost brothers, who constantly get into funny adventures. As a child, Finn decided that he would fight injustice and become a real hero. It's no wonder that he constantly fights villains, saves princesses, reveals secrets and plunges headlong into adventures, dragging his loyal friends along with him. What else can you do if you are the last person on the planet?

Yes, yes, the last one. But the world didn’t converge like a wedge on people: even without them, the series has a lot of interesting characters, each of whom has their own story and their own unique character. We will not constantly remind you that these creatures are mostly the result of mutations due to high radioactivity, so as not to kill the atmosphere of the fairy tale.

For example, Finn and Jake live in a treehouse with a sentient game console named BMO. A very useful neighborhood, since BMO simultaneously serves as a portable outlet, player, camera, alarm clock, toaster, flashlight, strobe light, video player, tape recorder and just a funny guy.

By the way, I'm Pendleton Ward's favorite character. Everyone else - get over it!

Another of the central heroines of the story is Princess Bubblegum. Although she looks like a teenage girl with pink hair, she is actually a genetically modified piece of candy that is sentient. The title of princess is not just a reason for her to wear beautiful dresses: Bubblegum actually rules her Candy Kingdom, populated by sentient confectionery products. In her spare time, she studies science, in particular chemistry. This is not to say that all her experiments are successful. But if something goes wrong, her true friends - Finn and Jake - always help her.

In addition to the fact that the princess is not deprived of beauty, intelligence and knowledge (for example, she speaks Korean and German) and rules the Candy Kingdom, she can arouse envy in any girl. She does not age because she can control the appearance of her candy mass. This is real luck!

It is what it is.

What an infection!

And in the cave, in the house built by Finn and Jake, lives the vampire queen Marceline. She is the daughter of Hanson Abadir, the lord of evil and ruler of the Nightosphere - the local equivalent of hell, where immortal demons live. True, Marceline does not get along with her dad and, unlike Bubblegum, does not take her title very seriously. She mostly passes the time scaring passers-by for laughs and playing hard rock on the bass guitar.

Marceline is a fairly good-natured girl (by the standards of half-demons, half-vampires), although she has her own quirks. She is friends with Finn, but likes to scare Jake, who is terribly afraid of vampires.

Not true! I'm not afraid of Marceline, I'm just always on guard!

And some fans suspect that her bosom friendship with Princess Bubblegum is something more than just friendship... The creators of the series did not confirm this information, but did not deny it either, leaving fans room for imagination.

I... I refuse to comment on this at all!

The image of Marceline turned out to be so interesting that the creators of Adventure Time gave her a separate miniseries, Stakes, where they revealed many secrets. In a series of several episodes included in season 7, they told in detail how Marceline received vampire superpower, how she began to get involved in punk rock, what she lives and what she dreams about.

Time for villains

Not everything is quiet and calm in this kingdom of children's fantasies. From time to time, the country of Ooo shows viewers its dark side. As elsewhere, there are negative characters, dangerous lands where death awaits the heroes, and the forces of evil that are waiting in the wings. Finn's eternal enemy is the Lich, the ruler of an army of bone knights, seeking to destroy the peace and quiet of the kingdom. From time to time, Marceline's dad, the dark lord Hanson Abadir, also causes problems.

But most often Finn and Jake are annoyed by the Ice King. His story is one of the saddest and most difficult in this series. Previously, he was a man named Simon Petrikov, a happy groom and a harmless antique dealer. It was his passion for rare objects that played a cruel joke on him. Even before the Mushroom War, Simon bought a magical crown, and over time it completely absorbed his sanity, while simultaneously granting him eternal life.

Many years have passed since then. The Snow King no longer remembers that he was once an ordinary person and truly loved. Perhaps his constant attempts to kidnap some princess in order to marry her (he is especially drawn to Princess Bubblegum, but he kidnaps everyone) are connected with the fact that he once loved the bride and called her his princess, and this was imprinted in his subconscious. Another reason for his passion for Bubblegum
it may be that she wears a white robe, like his bride. Or maybe he's just crazy. One way or another, Simon Petrikov is no more, there is only the Snow King, who really annoyed everyone.

By the way, Snezhny is seriously passionate about fan fiction and even writes them himself.

Subtext time

As befits a psychedelic cartoon, Adventure Time does not have a clearly defined end-to-end plot. Often, the creators of the series themselves do not know what will happen to the characters in the next episode. The plot is always invented from scratch.

The story takes place in the writers' room, where Pendleton Ward and his colleagues are plotting the episode. The result is passed on to the artists, who, by the way, are given almost complete freedom of action, since the cartoon does not have clear boundaries. It takes nine months from writing a synopsis to airing an episode, but usually several episodes are created at the same time. In general, with a cartoon it’s like with a child: nine months and you’re done.

But at the same time, the creators do not consider the series itself to be for children. It touches on adult issues, has subtext that is incomprehensible to children, and the characters are not divided into good and bad. Everything here is like in life.

Children's cartoon, you say?

Each episode of Adventure Time subtly teaches the characters and viewers moral values. Children will learn from it that they must take money seriously, help their neighbors, respect the interests of other beings, and always be kind and honest.

But the cartoon also touches on “adult” problems. For example, the interspecies love between Jake the dog and Lady Raincorn (a hybrid of a unicorn and a rainbow) causes misunderstanding among others. And the elephant Woody goes through two divorces before she finds her true love in the young Pig.

난 단지 한국어로 말을 하지만, 내 생각 은 인간의 육체 에 공급

But I understand my horse even without words!

Although there is plenty of room for imagination in the world of Adventure Time, the author also gave the characters the opportunity to visit parallel universes and travel in their dreams. Finn lives several alternative lives, where he even manages to start a family and die of old age, surrounded by loved ones. Well, or just be a different boy with a completely different fate.

Time of puberty

The characters in Adventure Time grow with each season (and this is very atypical for such stories), and the universe changes along with them. We see the world through Finn's eyes, and every year the world becomes darker. With each episode, more and more severe images appear in the land of Ooo. We see destroyed cities, pieces of equipment, landfills and other things that remind us that once upon a time a completely different life was in full swing in the lands of Ooo. The consequences of nuclear war become increasingly clear, and Finn begins to wonder if there are other people on Earth.

At the very beginning of the story, Finn appears before us as a twelve-year-old boy, but now he is already sixteen, and although he desperately clings to childhood fun, his maturation is becoming more and more obvious. Finn is more and more worried about princess kisses than adventures, the hero's voice breaks, and his problems become more serious. In general, even the hero of a fairy-tale world, similar to an absurd dream, could not avoid puberty and from time to time succumbs to the power of hormones.

But I will be old enough for Princess Bubblegum!

Finn was infatuated with Princess Bubblegum for a long time, but she could not reciprocate his feelings due to the five-year age difference. Psychological. The princess feels the same age as she looks; she has long since passed several hundred. In several episodes, the princess grew younger to thirteen and was finally able to reciprocate the hero’s feelings, but, having returned to her usual age, she rejected him again.

Finn later began dating Flame Princess. However, this girl is so hot (literally) that a boy can't even touch her without getting at least a third degree burn. But this does not stop the heroes. At thirteen, you already have a lot to do with your girlfriend. There are plenty of reasons to suspect that the Princess of the Sweet Kingdom is still jealous of Finn for Princess Flame.

Seriously???

Nonsense! I'm not jealous at all!

The changes aren't just about Finn. Jake and Lady Rainhorn manage to acquire offspring, who matured in a few days, saving their parents a lot of nerves. Most heroes are still subject to aging, although they live much longer than ordinary people. Even Princess Bubblegum, who keeps her age under control, realizes that her life will not last forever.

Voices of heroes

Finn was originally voiced by Zach Shad in the pilot episode. But three whole years passed from the release of the pilot to the appearance of the first season, and Zach’s voice managed to break. The voice-over job was passed on to his younger brother Jeremy. In order not to change the actor every few years, the creators decided that Finn would grow up with Jeremy and eventually turn twenty-five.

The original voice cast of Adventure Time featured many famous actors. For example, in the Ice King you can recognize good old SpongeBob, voiced by Tom Kenny, and in Jake - Bender from Futurama, voiced by John DiMaggio. Well, Marceline and her father are voiced by Olivia and Martin Olson, who in reality are also father and daughter.

Comic Time

You can get acquainted with the world of Finn and Jake not only through the series, but also through comics. Since February 2012, the publishing house BOOM! Studios produces a monthly series with Ryan North as its main writer. And since June 2013, “Adventure Time” comics have also been published in Russia - thanks to the Komilfo publishing house.

In terms of plot, the comics are not very close to the animated series and sometimes even contradict it. But the basics are preserved: Finn and Jake constantly get into various troubles, help everyone who is in trouble, and the atmosphere is still crazy. Each issue includes at least two comics. One is usually drawn after a cartoon, and the second is in a different style. In addition, there are a lot of additional comics - for example, a separate story about BMO and many spin-offs from which you can learn more about Marceline and other characters.

In addition to comics, the Adventure Time encyclopedia has already been published in Russian. It is written from the perspective of Hanson Abadir, Marceline's father. It seems as if the author of the encyclopedia set out to drive anyone crazy who decides to read it: it is written in a very stilted style and is full of literary traps. However, knowing Abadir’s character, this is exactly what he was counting on.

But if you look into the encyclopedia, it will become an excellent guide to the magical land of Ooo for both a resident of a post-apocalyptic world and an Adventure Time fan. There are descriptions of places and heroes, useful tips for travelers in the lands of Ooo, and even magic spells. And in the margins there are notes written on behalf of Finn, Jake and Marceline.

* * *

It's no surprise that the Adventure Time universe is so popular. This is a world where there is no place for rules, a world where you never know what will happen in the next second. Sentient vegetables and people with butts instead of heads live here, an ancient telepathic double war elephant flies here, Abraham Lincoln rules here over Mars. And every inhabitant of this world knows that there can never be too many adventures.

Cartoon Network has announced that Adventure Time will end in 2018, so we still have two full seasons ahead. Sit back and get ready for new stories. And if you have not yet had the opportunity to plunge into this world, full of absurdity and cheerful madness, then immediately correct the situation. If you are a child or have ever been a child, you will definitely love this story.

Just a week ago, quite unexpectedly for myself, I discovered that the 7th season of Adventure Time ended back in July. IN JULY, and I completely lost sight of this moment, but, damn it, it turned out to be completely clear to me - over the past 3 years, every few months, I remembered that I needed to go to Zeburo’s group and see what he voiced a new one from Adventure Time. And here, on you, the happiness ended, and the eternal ongoing for me somehow stopped happening. And also, somewhere on the edge of consciousness there were looming memories that the series would end with the 9th season in 2018. In general, sadness, melancholy and sadness.

In those 4 years that I spent with Finn and Jake, a shitload of things happened. I have changed, the world around me has changed and, most importantly, Finn, Jake, and the animated series itself have changed. And this fact is worth special consideration, because when I was little, my everything was animated series with a vertical plot. The characters in them did not change, the world remained static, and the events of the past remained in the past and rarely influenced future plots. The most obvious example of this is The Simpsons. At a time when RenTV could be watched without bleeding from the eyes, The Simpsons were something unshakable and constant. They are still like this - the 28th season is in full swing, a huge amount of resources are spent on the production of episodes, but now I don’t watch them anymore. Somewhere in the 19th season, I realized that I had been chewing the same gum for more than one year, and it was time to finally spit it out. And a little later, Adventure Time appeared in my life.

Looking from the height of my years, I can say with confidence that now I would hardly be able to get through the first 2 seasons of AT. MrRose, with whom I was intensely communicating at the time, told me over and over again that I was watching shit and recommended watching Ax Cop. Like, this and that is trash, but at least Cop has balls. Yes, that was so, only in the second season Cop became rotten as a character, and personally I began to feel only pity. And this is against the background of how more and more complex plots began to appear in AT, and the problems raised became truly adult. Finn grew up, his voice broke, his sympathy for Princess Bubblegum gave way to a relationship with Princess Flame, and then they broke up completely. Arcs for several episodes began to appear, some stories received unexpected continuations, after seasons, what seemed unchanged changed, the history of the world began to be revealed, and some stories could do without Finn and Jake. Yes, damn it, even the Ice King turned from a so-so villain into a broken old man with Alzheimer's disease! — How could you not love the animated series for this? It has become something more than just a way to kill time aimlessly.

Now it may seem that I'm leading you to the realization that Adventure Time comics are an outlet that can help smooth out the sadness of a breakup and provide some more positive experiences. But the truth, alas, is much harsher than sweet dreams - the Adventure Time comics are not what the animated series ultimately became.

Currently in Russia Publishing house Comilfo 11 volumes have been released, 6 of which are numbered, and written by the creator of AT Pendleton Ward himself, and 5 of which are actually the author's fantasies based on them. But, God grant that at least half of them are as good as the last seasons of the animated series.

The first 2 seasons of the animated series are pure procedural, the structure of which corresponds to many of the written comics. And yes, for some this may well be enough, because after all, these are the Finn and Jake we all love? It is so? Almost. Only in most cases they are images, dummies, without any hint of internal development and further evolution. All events happen around them, and they just wave their fists, rush headlong towards danger and conquer everything and everyone. It’s funny, cute, and very often one is pleased with the flirtations with the comic format and unexpected finds, but this turns out to be not enough. And yes, I (like Zhenya) have all 11 volumes on my shelf, and I like to look at this collection, but I only experience exceptionally pleasant emotions from a few volumes. And these are the ones I would like to recommend reading:

Adventure Time. Book 2

In my impressions, license books often show their worth in some aspects, but overall they manage to be very mediocre. You can read them to kill time and catch a couple of lulz, but no more. Things are completely different with the second book. Princess Bubblegum creates a time machine, and Jake begins to use it to his advantage - replaying the party over and over again, enjoying the fun and the opportunity to not clean up the mess left by the guests. The princess finds out about this and destroys the car, and Jake repairs it and, together with Finn, goes on a journey through time. And it looks very cool, because in addition to the fact that the characters themselves create problems, you can see the development of the characters. The same moment with Finn and Queen Bubblegum saying goodbye - I naturally squealed from him.

Adventure Time. Marceline and the Scream Queens

I will say without exaggeration - this is my favorite AT comic. Marceline, along with her rock band Scream Queens, goes on tour, and Princess Bubblegum agrees to accompany her and help organize the entire event. It seems that the story “let’s organize our own rock band!” has long become typical. in the world of Ooo it begins to play with completely new colors, because both the setting and the characters themselves are far from typical. The confrontation between Marceline, who can hardly organize herself and her team, and Bubblegum, who, acting as a manager, tries to bring order to the chaos of the lives of rock stars, pushes the story forward and makes the characters literally exude internal tension. There are no battles, no fight against evil, only contradictions between the heroes who are trying to achieve a common goal - to promote the group. And it turns out to be freaking cool.

Adventure Time. Candy detectives

Finn and Jake suddenly disappear. The Candy Kingdom is in danger. Princess Bubblegum assigns Peppermint Footman and Cinnamon Roll to ensure the safety of the residents. From time to time, Mint and Bulka themselves go out onto the city streets and try to sort out problems; sometimes they hire other heroes to keep order. Marceline and Tree Trunks? Lemon grabber and PPK? Ice King and Strong Susan? What other unexpected combinations of Ooo defenders can Mint and Bun create? And will everything in the Kingdom be the same as before? Absolutely crazy adventures combined with the inner monologues of the Peppermint Footman and flirting with the atmosphere of a typical noir detective. And, despite the leaked ending, in the end, the comic still feels very worthy.

Adventure Time. Sweet stories

Just a collection of small stories from different authors in the amount of 18 units. They differ in mood, message and design. Some of them are absolutely crazy, others seem pointless and stupid, but in the end they are all very cute. Just look at the story of Princess Hot Dog, who meets her bun (and yes, after watching “Full Sausage”, the story has a second bottom), or the story about the inhabitants of Bacon Fields.

In the future, the guys from Come il faut are going to release more AT comics. Will they be as good as the ones I listed above? Don't know. Maybe they will simply take their place on the shelf in the general collection, or maybe they will become those diamonds whose shine you will want to see again, after a while. Let's see.
