Anne Hathaway facts from life.

Anne Hathaway's house

Sonnet 145

All other information about her is hypothetical. For example, it is often assumed that there are 145 words in Shakespeare's sonnet “I hate” from hate away she threw / And saved my life- the surname Hathaway is punously hidden (and even that And saved should be read as Anne saved; compare the game with your own name I am Will in other sonnets). In terms of the level of skill, this sonnet is classified as an early one and it is assumed that it could have been written back in Stratford. It stands apart among the sonnets both in size (iambic tetrameter instead of pentameter, which is present in all the other 153) and in style (it does not have Shakespeare’s lush metaphors, the choice of words is very simple). In Marshak's translation, sonnet 145 looks like this:

I hate - these are the words
What came from her sweet lips the other day
They burst out in anger. But barely
She noticed my fear -

How I held my tongue
Which I still don't care about
Whispered now a caress, now a reproach,
Not a cruel sentence.

“I hate,” - subdued,
The lips spoke, but the look
Anger has already been replaced by mercy,
And the night rushed from heaven to hell.

Other hypotheses

The unusual circumstances of William and Anne's marriage also attract attention. It is believed that Shakespeare could seduce an over-aged girl and then, under fear of revenge from her relatives, was forced to marry; but there is no evidence of this. Others believe that Anne was a woman of lax behavior and seduced the young man herself, and then, having become pregnant, forced him to marry, but these are pure assumptions.

It is also debatable whether the "second bed" is a good or bad inheritance for Anne; most likely there is no insult in this. Historians have pointed out that at that time the best bed in the house was usually intended for guests, and Shakespeare bequeathed to his wife, in fact, their own marriage bed; in addition, according to the law, the widow was already entitled to a third of the inheritance, regardless of the will, and both daughters were married and could support her. Gaps in the sources are readily filled in by historical novelists (this is also true, however, for the relatively poorly documented biography of Shakespeare in general).

Her brother's homosexual inclinations turned her away from the desire to enter a monastery. Anne Hathaway's biography is far from monastic - after all, she has become an attractive woman and is a very talented actress who recently won an Oscar.

Biography of Anne Hathaway

Born "in the middle"

The Hathaway family - lawyer Gerard and actress Kate - raised three children: two boys, Michael and Thomas, and a girl born “in the middle” between the sons, on November 12, 1982. The Great Bard's wife's name was Anne Hathaway, and with this in mind, mom and dad (who have English and Irish roots) decided to pay tribute to their homeland and named their daughter in honor of this historical figure, fortunately the surname was the same. The actress herself characterizes her loved ones this way: “A strong family with average income, with its own moral principles and life values.” Probably, it was these foundations that made the impressionable girl dream of a monastery. But later she changed her priorities and wanted to become an actress - like her mother.

Dreams of Broadway

Her pretty appearance and good vocal abilities paved the way for the girl to join a theater troupe - there are plenty of children's roles in any repertoire. A little later, she wanted to build a career on Broadway, but she was already too tall to portray children. But she’s not yet mature enough to take on “adult” roles. Ann was in the school choir and, as a high school student, was honored to perform with him at Carnegie Hall. Almost immediately after this, she received the role of the growing up daughter of the main characters in the show “Be Yourself.” The series aired for only one season, but they managed to notice the slender young beauty.

Success in cinema

Ann soon made her cinematic debut - in the romantic comedy The Princess Diaries, she played the main character, a schoolgirl who learns that she is the heir to the throne. It was a breakthrough! And the young artist considered it an honor to work with director Garry Marshall and musical star Julie Andrews.

Despite her success in cinema (Diaries was followed by several more works), yesterday’s high school graduate decided to study further. She chose the English literature department at Vassar College (where Meryl Streep once studied), not suspecting that she would later play with this star in a sensational film.

Anne Hathaway's film biography included the costume drama "Nicholas Nickleby", the fantasy "Ella Enchanted", a sequel to "The Princess Diaries", and in 2005, Ang Lee invited the actress to play the role of a cowboy's unloved wife (drama "Brokeback Mountain"). Critics noted Hathaway's subtle, soulful performance, and some believe that this is the best image created by the performer, which cannot be compared with her roles in comedies and fairy tales.

Editorial assistant and renowned novelist

The film “The Devil Wears Prada” was just another comedy in which the clumsy simpleton “ugly duckling” turned into a beautiful swan. Meryl Streep perfectly portrayed the stern, demanding and imperturbable editor of a fashion glossy magazine, and Anne was her “errand girl”, to whom the behind-the-scenes side of “high fashion” is revealed. The film performed very well in cinemas around the world, exceeding its budget almost ten times.

Anne once admitted that her ideal heroine is Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. Alas, Anne Hathaway's biography does not include this role. But only a year has passed since the release of the next adaptation of the novel (in which Elizabeth was portrayed by Keira Knightley), and Hathaway was already playing the writer herself - in the biopic Jane Austen.

Recognition of film academics

Oscar-winner Demme’s film “Rachel Getting Married” did very modestly at the box office, although Kim Ann was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as the mentally unstable ex-model. She will receive an Oscar, only later - for her Fantine from Les Misérables. This is where vocal abilities came in handy, because Tom Hooper was filming a musical. Anne amazed everyone at the casting - people cried, imbued with the heroine’s grief.

Not all films in Hathaway's career are as successful. “Bride Wars” seems like a cute trifle, critics scolded the parody of spy films “Get Smart”, and in “Alice in Wonderland” Anne doesn’t look like herself, this White Queen gives you goosebumps! But it’s great to always be different, not to carry the “train” of the cheerful Ella with you.

For the actress herself, the most difficult work was Catwoman from the final part of the Dark Knight franchise. The clever thief Selina is a real acrobat, so Anne did not leave the gym. But she is very glad that she beat out many good actresses in the competition for this role; the result was worth it: the film earned more than $1 billion, and it starred almost only stars.

Personal life of Anne Hathaway

Fraudster Groom

Either excessive gullibility or strong love prevented the actress from seeing a swindler in her boyfriend Raffaello Folieri. He was engaged in business and managed to embezzle $50 million from a charitable foundation (a famous billionaire donated this amount to the church). But Hathaway lived with an Italian for more than three years and was going to marry him! This was a very bitter lesson - it’s good that Anne herself was not prosecuted for complicity, because she was also one of the founders of the foundation (although she was not involved in Raffaello’s machinations).

Knight "on a white horse"

Anne Hathaway suffered disappointment in her personal life very hard. Her diaries were included in the case, and in court the details of the star’s relationship with Raffaello were clarified. The actress thought that she would never be able to trust a man.

But Adam Shulman appeared - a jeweler and just a good guy who managed to dispel Ann’s doubts.

At the end of 2011 they got engaged, and in September 2012 they got married. The ceremony was held at the highest level, although the newlyweds invited only their closest relatives. In March 2016, Anne gave birth to her first child, Jonathan.

Anne Hathaway - 10 best films

Anne likes gritty stories and strong characters. She is not afraid of stories with a bad ending. This may explain the somewhat strange choice of roles, in particular the role of former drug addict Kim in the film "Rachel Getting Married" or "Love and Other Drugs", where she played a girl suffering from Parkinson's disease. She's not afraid of explicit scenes: "I don't focus on nudity. For me, it was just an extension of who she is. It was real," she says.

Ann is a vegetarian, does not smoke or drink, does not use drugs, and does not start public quarrels. "Fate has been generous to me. I don't want to spoil what she gave me," she says.

Anne Hathaway's height: 173 centimeters.

Personal life of Anne Hathaway:

After breaking up with Raffaello Folieri, she began dating actor and jewelry designer Adam Shulman.

In November 2011, the couple announced their engagement. On September 29, 2012, they married at a private estate in the small town of Big Sur, California.

Documents have been preserved according to which the minor (he was under 21 years old) Shakespeare received permission to marry Anne Whattley. Despite the complete coincidence of the name, the last names are too different from each other to allow the clerk to make a mistake. In addition, the document mentioned that Anne Whattley was from Temple Grafton, while Anne Hathaway lived in Shottery. Probably, Shakespeare really wanted to marry Anne Whatley, information about whom has not been preserved, but Anne Hathaway, who at that time was practically an old maid at twenty-six, seduced the inexperienced young man.

The wedding took place in December 1582, and on May 26 of the following year the eldest daughter Susan was baptized, which makes the reason for the marriage very clear. The story of this marriage is reflected in some of Shakespeare's works. Thus, in Twelfth Night, when Viola, dressed as a boy, must answer Orsino’s question about how old her mythical lover is, she, with her inherent ability, speaks the pure truth without getting into trouble, and answers: “No more than to you" (hereinafter translated by E. Linetskaya). Duke Orsino believes that a wife must be younger than her husband, and advises:

Find yourself a younger girlfriend
Otherwise, you will quickly lose interest in her.
All women are like roses: the day will come -
The flower will bloom and fade away instantly.

Since Shakespeare's wife was eight years older than him, and was already forty-four when the play was written, it is difficult not to see a personal motive here.

Even more often they talk about the inadmissibility of close relationships before marriage. Thus, in the comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hera says to Lysander:

For a boy and a girl, human shame
Doesn't allow such closeness...

      (Translation by T. Shchepkina-Kupernik)

Sixteen years later, Shakespeare's opinion has not changed, and in The Tempest Prospero warns Ferdinand:

But if you use a blasphemous hand
Untie her chastity belt
Before the marriage ceremony -
Your union will not be blessed.
Then discord, sullen contempt
And barren hatred like thorns
Will shower your wedding bed,
And both of you will reject it.

      (Translation - M. Donskoy)

It’s hard to resist the thought that this is about Shakespeare’s own marriage. When he moved to London, he did not take his family with him. Although, apparently, he visited Stratford quite often, such a relationship with his wife could not be called a normal marital relationship. Most likely, there was no longer any closeness between them.

In The Winter's Tale Florizel says:

After all, I'm over the heart
He put duty, and above desire - honor.

      (Translation by V. Levik)

It was probably for exactly the same reasons that Shakespeare got married.

Anne Hathaway was born and raised in the village of Shottery, where her ancestors had long lived. Shakespeare's wife's relatives were wealthy Warwickshire yeomen.

Her grandfather, mentioned in the military levies as an archer, was in his parish constable, certifier, and one of the twenty authorized citizens of Stratford. When taxes were distributed, his property was valued at a fairly significant amount.

Father, Richard Hathaway, died in 1581. Having three daughters, he did not mention Anne in his will, but left money to his daughter Agnes for her wedding. In those days, these two names coincided. Thus, Philip Henslowe named his wife Agnes in his will, but she was buried as Anne.

Anne Hathaway apparently inherited a large farmhouse with twelve rooms. It has survived to this day, and in those days, apparently, was located almost on the edge of the Arden Forest.

Shakespeare's wife died at the age of sixty-seven, having outlived her husband by seven years.
