Oshibana or osibana is a type of floristry, the art of creating pictures from press-dried natural materials: flower petals, green and yellow leaves, stems and grass seeds.

The material for creating a picture must be prepared, i.e. collected and dried. Flowers, leaves, grass, seeds, and fluff are collected and dried under a press or in a herbarium folder so that they become flat. Leaves and flowers often change color. To obtain the desired shade, heat treatment or other methods of preserving natural beauty are sometimes used. It is important to know which plant is best to collect at what time of year. In addition, you need to collect plants in clear weather so that the plants are not wet.

How to dry plants?

1. In paper under pressure

You can dry flowers and leaves in a thick book, between pieces of tracing paper. If you need a voluminous flower - in a box with sand (daisies can be dried this way by carefully pouring sand over the flower), the dandelion is dried in the opening stage, head down, as soon as the white fluffy head opens, sprinkle with hairspray.

If you do not want to preserve the natural color of the plants, you can dry them with an iron, placing them between two sheets of paper. Just make sure the iron is not too hot, otherwise the leaves will become very brittle. It is better to iron them with a barely warm iron 3-4 times at intervals of several hours so as not to dry them out.

3. Microwave

The herbarium can be dried in the microwave, but the leaves do not always remain even and smooth, so it will be difficult to glue them.

4. In glycerin

Plants dried in glycerin will retain their shape well, but will acquire a greenish-brown tint; however, they can be painted for a decorative panel.

Dilute glycerin (sold in pharmacies) in hot water in a ratio of 1:3. Pour the resulting solution into a container at least 6-10 cm deep, lower the plants vertically, leave for several days until they darken, then dry.

Little tricks for drying herbarium:

1. When properly dried, the top of the whole plant with stem and leaves should not bend down.

2. To make the leaves denser, dip them in a solution of 20% PVA glue and water.

3. Flower buds can be dried in sand poured into a cardboard box. Of the flowers, dried red dahlias or delphinium retain their color better than others.

4. To ensure that dove-blue or bluish leaves retain their hue when dried, dip them in denatured alcohol for 1 minute.

Store plant material in sealed containers, protecting from direct sunlight, moisture and moths. Finished oshibana paintings can also fade and change color over time, so it is advisable to place them in a frame under glass and not keep them in the sun.

Artists attach (glue) dried plant material to a base (cardboard, fabric, wood), and the author creates a work of art using plants. That is, oshibana is painting with flowers and plants.

The art of oshibana originated in Japan approximately six hundred years ago. In Europe, this type of decorative and applied art was widespread during the Victorian era. In recent decades, oshibana has experienced a rebirth.

Floral artists perform in the technique wrong not only ornaments, landscapes, still lifes, but also portraits and subject paintings.

The use of natural materials in crafts and fine arts is gaining more and more popularity every year. Pressed floristry (oshibana) is an ancient Japanese technique for creating paintings from dried flowers. Using various dried plants, decorators create unique pictures and scenes, and the entire process occurs without the use of any paints.

To create an image from dried flowers, no special equipment is required. In fact, all working raw materials can be collected in a field, a nearby park, forest, or grown on a windowsill. If you use your imagination, you can find materials anywhere: by drying the peel of a banana or eggplant, opening tea bags with hibiscus or other tea, and also by drying the peel of a tangerine, cucumber, or removing it from an onion.

Leaves, flowers, fluff, peels and other materials are dried in a variety of ways, including standard press drying, vacuum drying and iron drying. Usually, after treatment, plants lose their natural color and turn pale or darken several shades. Materials such as banana turn dark brown after drying, so before starting work you need to roughly imagine what result the author wants to achieve, and then select plants of the desired color scheme.
After selecting materials, dried plants are attached to a fabric or paper canvas, forming a unique composition.
As a clear example, we recommend following the process of creating the painting “Lady with a Bouquet”, performed using the oshibana technique.

1. When starting work, in addition to dry materials, you need to prepare the following tools:
Colorless glue (PVA can be used);
Small scissors;
Tweezers;
Sharp object;
Glue gun (for gluing large plants);
White cardboard (colored if necessary)

2. To create a picture you need the following materials:
Dried rose or bell petals;
Violet petals;
Any yellow leaves;
Dry banana peel;
Dry corn silk (in other words, corn hair);
Other decoration materials to have on hand.

3. Before starting work, you should make a small sketch of the future painting on paper;

4. Apply several rose petals to the finished sketch. We place the leaves next to each other so that the result is a skirt that at least slightly repeats the drawn silhouette;

5. Apply glue to the entire length of the skirt and use tweezers to glue the petals;

6. Moving on to the sleeves. We cut them out from petals of a lighter shade and glue them in the same way. You can first draw sleeves on the petals and then cut them out. The result should look like this.

7. We design the décolleté area. Cut out a bust of the required shape from a banana peel and glue it onto the drawing;

9. Cut out hands from a yellow sheet and glue them to the lady;

10. We make a face out of small flower particles and use a gun to apply a drop of glue to the head area. We fix the bunch of corn hair, holding it with a sharp object for a while so that the hair sticks well. Immediately decorate with dry violet;

Interior decor is a fun activity, especially if you know how to do something with your own hands. The wall panel will become a real decoration of the living room, kitchen or bedroom. Collect fallen leaves from the street and clean them of dirt and dust. After this, wipe them well from moisture with a napkin. Prepare the base for the panel and attach the leaves to it. Immediately figure out what your composition should look like.

After this, you will need to spread glue on the surface of the base, as well as the leaves. You need to glue the leaves with the front side to the panel so that the veins are on top, and the craft can be given a relief texture.

Now apply glue to the leaves again and attach the foil. Cut a large piece of foil in advance so that there is enough for the entire base. Decorate the foil beautifully so that it fits tightly to the wooden base.

Take some black spray paint and apply it on top of the foil. After the paint has dried, you can begin to create shades. To do this, start wiping off the paint with a scraper. Try not to damage the foil itself, but don’t worry too much, you can fix everything with a black felt-tip pen or marker. Your DIY autumn panel is ready.

The picture must be glued from top to bottom. First of all, make the sky and the river. To create a sky, the leaves must be placed at an angle. Leaves for the river are glued in a horizontal position. Now start creating the distant shores. Pastel shades (peony or rose petals, raspberry leaves) are very suitable. Take green blanks and make hills of the second bank out of them. The house is created as follows: first of all, glue the walls, and then the window with the roof. Place trees near each house. Use various dry blades of grass as a crown. Banana peels and birch bark can be used to make trunks. Lastly, make a hedge, small bushes, and sheaves. Place the finished picture in a frame and cover it with protective film or glass. Remember that the painting should not be placed in bright sunlight, otherwise it will quickly deteriorate.

How to do:

On the street, collect fallen leaves and clean them from dust and dirt. Using a napkin, wipe the workpieces to remove moisture. Prepare the basis for the picture, attach leaves and think about what the composition will be. Lubricate the surface of the base with glue. Drop a little glue onto the leaves. Glue them right side down so that the veins are on top, giving them a relief texture. Apply glue again and place foil on top. The piece of foil should be large enough to cover the entire base. Decorate the foil beautifully so that it fits tightly to the wood base. Prepare black spray paint and apply on top. Once it's dry, start creating tones.

Take a scraper and start scraping off the paint. Try not to damage the foil, but there is no need to worry about this, since everything can be corrected with a black marker. This painting will be an excellent decoration for any interior.

Stages of work:

Prepare the base for the wreath. Using a compass and ruler, find the middle on the cardboard, draw one circle with a diameter of 24 centimeters, and the second with a diameter of 12 centimeters. Cut out the wreath blank. Tie a piece of twine, fold it in half, and glue it to the base of the wreath from the front side. Dilute PVA with water and glue the sheets. Lubricate the cardboard with glue, stick on the leaves, put the work aside to dry. As soon as the glue dries, decorate the wreath with berries, cones and dry inflorescences.

Work process:

First, apply a dark impregnation to the plywood and let it dry completely. Check the packaging for the drying time required. All recommendations must be followed. As soon as the first layer is completely dry, apply a light impregnation. Apply it very thinly so as not to cover the dark tone or cover the grain of the wood. Iron the rowan leaves and fold them between magazine or book pages. During ironing, the color of the workpiece will change slightly, so do not be alarmed.

On the board, draw the outlines of the future branch with a pencil. Each leaf will consist of 5-6 separate rowan leaves. Glue the blanks to the “Moment”. Move from one piece to another gradually until you have collected them all. Hang the panel on the wall.

It will turn out incredibly beautiful too.

Stages of work:

Cut out an oval from soft blue paper. This will be the basis of the craft. Glue leaves on top. They must first be dried or kept under “press” for several days. You can speed up the drying process. To do this, place the sheets between two book pages and iron them. Start gluing all the leaves from top to bottom to create a forest effect, dry the glue.

Glue the base with leaves to yellow paper or cardboard. You can also take light green color. Glue colorful birds on top or draw them with a black marker. Decorate the picture with flowers. Cut them out of double-sided paper. Cut 3 strips with a width of 1 cm, cut them into a “fringe”. Wrap the paper strips onto a stick and secure with glue. Once it’s dry, “open” the flowers and carefully straighten the petals.

To create a leaf, prepare green double-sided paper, make strips ½ cm wide. Wind them tightly onto a stick, release what you twist and you will get a curl. Use your fingers to squeeze the curl to form a leaf shape, secure with glue. Glue leaves and flowers.

If in the summer or early autumn you were not too lazy to collect and, then in a free minute you can make with your own hands amazing ones in their beauty, ease of execution, and flowers on a transparent background.

You can also attract children to your creativity, because making such paintings is no more difficult than the ones they are already familiar with. For most of the “transparent” paintings from our selection, you will only need dried leaves and flowers, double glass and a frame or canvas.
