His first single was the song "Pump It Up!", which is a cover version of the hit of the Black & White Brothers with an added sample from the song "In The Mix" by the Mixmaster project. Denzel's debut single turned out to be popular not only in Belgium. This track was released in most European countries. The first single was followed by the album "The Name Of The Jam". The song "You Are All Of That" was chosen as the second single from this record.

It was impossible not to notice him: a sonorous voice, a hairstyle that looked more like thorns, and the same blue glasses. This charming guy was loved not only by all the young girls, but also by their parents! ...

Belgian singer Denzel, whose real name is Johan Waem, visited Trend Life today...

In 2003, Denzel became one of the twenty finalists of the “Idol” competition (analogous to the Russian “Star Factory”), which gave him the opportunity to devote his life to music and record his debut single “Pump it Up”. He chose the stage name Denzel in honor of his favorite film actor, Denzel Washington.

After that, "Pump it Up" was picked up by DJs around the world. And Europe was swept by a real Denzel-mania.

In addition to "Pump it Up", Denzel has several more explosive hits: "You Are All Of That", "Put Your Hands Up In The Air!", "Home".

- Denzel, in 2003 your composition "PumpitUp" topped the European charts. What do you think is the success of a real hit?

I think "Pump it Up" was something new at that time. In other words, it was a new wave in dance music. The song "Pump it Up" is a remake of an old song by Black and White brothers. The main thing about this composition is that it lifts the mood and at the same time is easy to sing. That's why "Pump it Up" became one of my explosive hits and topped the dance charts in most European countries.

As for the secret to the success of a single, I don’t know it. The fact is that you can never guess whether listeners will like this or that song or not. With all this, the promotion of the composition is of great importance.

- They said about you that you are a one-day singer. How did you manage to destroy the negative opinion that was formed about you?

Generally, most people believe that artists who create dance music can't really sing. For 12 years I was a member of the rock band Scherp op Snee, where I sang and played bass guitar. So I'm also a musician who writes 90% of my music and lyrics. I managed to have my say in music. In the three years since recording Pump it Up, I've played an incredible amount of shows around the world and released a super successful debut album, The Name Of The Jam, followed by a second. In Poland I received the Eska Award, in Russia - the MTV Music Award.

As you can see, I have proven that I am not a fly-by-night singer and continue to prove this to this day, because I have carved out my niche in the international music market.

- Yours the song "Undercover" entered the final of the qualifying round of the Polish Eurovision! Would you like to take part directly in Eurovision?

I will say this, Eurovision was not one of my priorities in life. The reason I did it is because a Polish record company asked me to do it. To be honest, Eurovision doesn't interest me at all.

- Do you agree with the opinion thatHas Eurovision become politically charged in recent years?

Yes, you noticed correctly. It is for this reason that Eurovision does not interest me, and I do not want to take part in it. It won't be a big problem for me to find a good song. But at this competition it is important to show an extravagant performance, something different from what happened before. This pop song doesn't stand to be repeated.

Of course, during its existence, Eurovision has become politicized to a certain extent. I think that in recent years this song competition has become more like a circus.

Denzel, they say it takes cruelty to be successful in show business. How true is this?

Not true at all. I do not believe in that. I always try to be a person who treats my fans and fans with respect, and you know, they give me the same back. I perform at the same concert venues several times. This means that I like my audience. I strive to be simple when communicating with fans.

- Are you all busy today or do you have downtime?

To be honest, downtime for singers is extremely rare. I'm currently working on a new album, which will be released this year. I’m also preparing for a tour in Poland. Judge for yourself - my work is through the roof (smiles).

- In your opinion, is friendship possible among representatives of show business?

Yes, sure. I have many friends in show business. Although I must admit that I have developed rather warm friendly relations with representatives of the world musical environment than with my colleagues on stage in my homeland. I don't know why this happened.

- What do you do besides music?

I have a wife and two children, and I spend all my free time with them. I like to go to the cinema, go out with friends and sometimes play pool.

-Are you familiar with Azerbaijani culture?

Not that I'm familiar. I was in Baku with a transfer when I was flying to the capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty. But I am not familiar with the country itself. I look forward to your invitation (smiles). I have little knowledge about you. Your capital is the city of Baku. I know that Azerbaijan, which is located on the border of Europe and Asia, gained independence in the early 90s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In any case, I hope to get the opportunity to get to know Azerbaijani culture better!
