SpongeBob's friends. List of characters from the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of children's favorite cartoon characters. A bright hero, ready to help his friends, promoting decency, courage and honesty, is popular today among children and teenagers. Branded products featuring the cartoon character are in demand all over the world.

History of creation

SpongeBob (in Russian translation - SpongeBob) became the hero of the animated series, the premiere episode of which was released on television in the spring of 1999. The product of the children's television channel Nickelodeon turned out to be no less in demand than Hey Arnold! or "Catdog". The story of a small sponge living at the bottom of the ocean in the town of Bikini Bottom has attracted the interest of millions of viewers. The cartoon was about the main character, whose home was a pineapple located on Shell Street, and about his neighbors: an octopus, Sandy the squirrel and a starfish.

SpongeBob works at Mr. Krabs and is trying to get a promotion. The character's life is full of interesting events. The hero learns to drive, receives unexpected guests, organizes parties and takes part in unpredictable scams. The cartoon character was invented by Stephen Hillenburg, and Thomas Kenny gave his voice to SpongeBob.

A marine biologist, Hillenburg always felt a craving for art, and at some point it overcame common sense. A specialist in marine life, he took an animation course and, upon completing it, gave life to a character that had no analogues in cinema. The underwater city, invented by the author, is inhabited by animals, which only required the consent of the Nickelodeon channel to introduce them to the viewer.

Hillenburg prepared a presentation, offering sketches and sculptures for the producers' consideration, as well as a composed song for the introduction. The idea turned out to be in demand. After some time, the cartoon gathered an impressive audience of fans in front of the screens. Today the project is a nominee and winner of prestigious awards in the field of television and animation.

Animated series

The characters in the project are unusual and interesting. SpongeBob is the central character of the action. His age is undetermined and irrelevant. Sponge is not just a symbol for a character. Unlike friends, the hero is not an animal, but an inanimate object. While working at the Krusty Krabs, SpongeBob prepares burgers, the recipe of which Plankton is trying to steal. The hero loves his job and works tirelessly year after year.

The character's adventures are directly related to the infantilism of Sponge and his neighbors. In the company of friends, he catches jellyfish, studies karate, blows soap bubbles and watches cartoons. The stupid Patrick became SpongeBob's close friend. An eccentric starfish in Hawaiian shorts is characterized by laziness and a lot of bad habits. In their free time, friends have fun and do all sorts of pranks. Patrick often becomes a source of problems for Bob. The starfish's narrow-mindedness is explained by biological reasons, but this does not become a problem for the heroes' friendship.

The opposite of SpongeBob is the talented and cunning octopus Squidward. They don't get along with each other, but are forced to live next door. An art lover, the octopus paints pictures, plays the violin and loves silence. He rarely gets to be alone and calm, because Bob and Patrick constantly drag him into adventure stories. Unlike Sponge, Squidward does not like work and constant fun, but in some episodes he becomes bored, and, remembering his neighbor’s carelessness, he has fun in his house.

SpongeBob is friends with Sandy the Squirrel, who lives on the seabed in a special aquarium and moves around the town in the aquarium. An athlete and scholar, she moved to Bikini Bottom from Texas. The squirrel often helps Bob out of trouble. The leitmotif of their relationship has a slight hint of romance, but the story of Sponge and Squirrel remains unfinished. SpongeBob helps Sandy understand some of the laws of the sea and introduces her to the types of entertainment available.

The main character also has enemies. Eugene Krabs and Plankton are among them. Competing eatery owners are trying to gain the upper hand. The first attracts the public with a wonderful dish, and the second with technical innovations. Sea creatures prefer Krabby Patties, so Plankton often loses in the fight. SpongeBob has repeatedly defended the secret of making burgers from his competitor, but Plankton inexorably repeats his attempts to find out the secret.

From time to time, a silent character appears on the screen who means a lot to the main character. This is his pet snail Gary. Sometimes viewers see Mr. Krabs' daughter in the form of a whale. Plankton's wife (a mechanized creature), Harry's lobster trainer or Mrs. Puff's puffer fish, who teaches Bob to drive, do not appear in every episode, but they have a unique charm.

  • Few people know that SpongeBob is a diminutive name for SpongeBob. His name is actually Robert Harold SquarePants. At first he was given the name Sponge Boy, but it turned out that a popular detergent brand was already using it, and the hero had to be renamed. The author assumed that the character should have a round body, but over time abandoned this idea, since the unusual shape suited the character of the hero more. Bob wears a shirt and tie and a red hat and occasionally appears in underwear.

  • Critics believe that the characters in the animated series symbolize mortal sins. So, Mr. Krabs is credited with greed, and Plankton is credited with envy. Patrick suffers from laziness, and Sandy struggles with anger. The snail loves to eat and symbolizes gluttony, and Bob satisfies his lust. At the same time, lust is not understood in the literal sense, but in analogy with the character’s internal passions, which cannot always be overcome. Crazy ideas constantly appear in Bob's head, the implementation of which he is unable to refuse.
  • The cartoon and its characters gained popularity in 2007, after the release of the second season. In 2007, Time magazine recognized the project as the best television product. Among the popular episodes of the series, viewers named “The Idiot Box,” “The Clever Crane,” and “Stuck in the Refrigerator.”

Squidward Quentin Tentacles

Gary Wilson Jr.

Born September 9, 1972. He is very greedy, selfish and literally obsessed with money. The main thing in Mr. Krabs' life is money. He is willing to go to great lengths to gain them or avoid losing them, usually without regard for the safety or well-being of other people or even himself. His arch business rival is Sheldon Jay Plankton, who was his childhood friend but is now constantly trying to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula. Mr. Krabs has an adopted daughter, a sperm whale named Pearl.

Mr. Krabs' main opponent is Plankton, a mad scientist and scientific genius who has his own Chum Bucket restaurant across the street from the Krusty Krabs. Plankton is constantly trying to steal the secret recipe for Krabby Patties, for which he uses various technical devices.

Mr. Krabs spent his childhood in solitude, in a deep depression that seemed to him as if it was endless. He tried to start his own business with his friend Plankton, but the food in their restaurant turned out to be poisoned. Mr. Krabs and Plankton blamed each other for this incident and it ruined their friendship. After this, Mr. Krabs worked in the Navy until he went into business again. He bought a local nursing home, Rusty Krabs, which he decided to turn into a restaurant, and added the letter "K" to the word "Rusty". Now the name began to sound like “Krusty Krab”. Krabby Patties became the signature dish of the Krusty Krabs, and the Krusty Krabs itself became the favorite restaurant of many residents of Bikini Bottom.

Mr. Krabs is short, red, and plump, and has very tall eyestalks, a frilled nose, large claws, and very short, pointy legs. He wears a blue shirt. Krabs is often compared to a sailor or pirate.

Krabs often uses stereotypical pirate phrases and accents when speaking.

As it turns out above, Mr. Krabs is very stingy and selfish, often behaving much worse than Plankton. His only interest is money; he doesn't care about his customers or employees. Perhaps the obsession with money is related to childhood poverty. If he is predicted to lose money, attacks of madness come over him.

Despite his money-grubbing ways, it is sometimes apparent that Mr. Krabs is not entirely heartless. He sometimes apologizes for his actions. He loves SpongeBob and his daughter and takes care of her. He respects SpongeBob and Squidward as they help keep his restaurant afloat.

Mr. Krabs has remarkable physical strength and a remarkable sense of smell. In one episode, he lifts an entire Krusty Krabs.

Sandy Cheeks

During his student years he was friends with Krabs. Now he lives in the "Wash Bin" with his computer wife Karen. He dreams of becoming a giant and conquering the entire underwater world. The atomic tests in Bikini Atoll in the series are explained precisely by Plankton’s antics. In the series "Plankton's Army" gathers an army of his own kind and storms the Krusty Krabs. And in the full-length film, he finally learns the formula for Krabby Patties! If he does defeat Mr. Krabs, he is always stopped by the restaurant's devoted cook, SpongeBob.

Karen

Plankton's computer wife. It has many human properties: it talks, cooks food, expresses different emotions, which is very different from an ordinary robot or computer. Many of the ideas for stealing the secret Krabby Patty recipe belong to her, although Plankton often appropriates them for himself, for which Karen is offended by her husband. Plankton doesn't appreciate his wife because she doesn't know how to cook at all.

Technical data

  • Karen's memory is 256 GB.
  • Karen has a program called P.E.V.T. (Mother-in-Law Emergency Intervention Program). When something happens to Karen, this program is automatically loaded in the form of Plankton's mother-in-law, who does not like her son-in-law.
  • Karen has a laser weapon built into her, which is shown for the first time in the series "Enemy In-Law".
  • Despite the fact that Karen is an ordinary desktop computer, she is capable of crying, laughing and expressing other feelings.
  • As it turns out in the second full-length film, the power of her processor is sufficient to travel through time.

Flying Dutchman

The ghost of a green pirate from the ghost ship "Flying Dutchman", but in some episodes is shown as a resident of the underworld. He loves to scare the inhabitants of Bikini, in the series "Slaves of the Ghost" he kidnapped SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward. Has some personal grudges with Mr. Krabs.

Squilliam Fensison

Octopus . Squidward's cousin and nemesis. Outwardly, they look like two peas in a pod, but Squilliam has a completely different character: he is mocking and cunning, unlike Squidward. Squilliam has a large unibrow, symbolizing his noble origins. Very talented, billionaire, most of his capital probably earned through dishonest labor. Being much more successful than his cousin, he is a constant object of Squidward's envy. Despite his talent, however, like Squidward himself, he has a lot of negative qualities, such as narcissism, pride and narcissism. For him, his main goal in life is to brag about his success and fame, and to mock Squidward's failures and unpopularity. To restore justice, SpongeBob helps Squidward beat Squilliam and make him feel like a loser.

Man Ray

A parody of Aquaman's main enemy Black Manta, the sworn enemy of Mermaid Superman and Barnacle Boy. Being one of the antagonists, he often opposes their protégé SpongeBob. In the series "Sea Superman and Barnacle Boy 3" I tried to become good and was on the path to correction, but my bad character took its toll.

Dirty Bubble

Supervillain of the underwater world, one of the enemies of Sea Superman and Barnacle Boy. A very nasty and angry brown bubble with a habit of laughing with a malicious laugh. SpongeBob's "favorite" villain.

Bubble Bass

Sea bass suffering from poor eyesight and obesity. Being a restaurant critic, he has a bad temper. Boorish, cowardly, a little deceitful, never pays attention to others. The first time they met, Bubble Bass humiliated Sponge by hiding Krabby Patty pickles under his tongue and made him unable to remember the sequence of making a Krabby Patty.

Minor characters

Harold and Margaret SquarePants

SpongeBob's parents are light brown sponges. Appear several times throughout the series. They love their son very much and want him to return home. To prove his independence, Bob often tries to avoid moving in with his parents.

SpongeBob's Grandma

A dark brown sponge that lives secludedly on the outskirts of Bikini Bottom. She loves sweets and her grandson Bob, but rarely sees him. In the series "Nanny Patrick" invites him to his birthday.

Neptune

The Lord of the Sea Kingdom, who has the highest power in Bikini Bottom. Appears in the episodes "Neptune's Spatula", "SpongeBob vs. the Krabby Patty Maker" and "Clash with Triton", "Trident Trouble" and in the feature-length cartoon "SpongeBob and the Crown of Neptune". Has a son, Triton, a daughter, Mindy, and a wife, Amphitrite.

Grandfather Redbeard

A very, very old pirate, Mr. Krabs' grandfather, Victor's father. Taught his grandson piracy when he was just a baby. After many years, Eugene grew up and hired a crew and robbed the dead like his grandfather, but he did not get any treasure and he later fired the crew, sold his ship and many years later opened the Krusty Krab, but Redbeard still thinks that his grandson is a pirate . His quotes: "A pirate never lies" and "I have smelled many smells, but nothing stinks worse than lies!" In the series "Pirate Grandpa" he wrote a letter to Mr. Krabs saying that he would visit him. Mr. Krabs was scared, because if he came, his grandfather would understand that he was not a pirate and would be upset. He, SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward dressed up as pirates and turned the Krusty Krab into a pirate ship. He managed to convince his grandfather for a while that he was a pirate, but at the end of the series he was exposed. However, he was not embarrassed by the fact that his grandson was the owner of the diner, he even liked it and in the end he left, taking part of his grandson's savings.

Victor Krabs

Mr. Krabs' father, Betsy's husband, Redbeard's son. Mentioned and appeared in some episodes.

Betsy Krabs

Mr. Krabs's mother, Victor's wife, lives in a house stylized as a pink anchor. Wears glasses and a purple dress. Mrs. Krabs is very strict and domineering. In the series "Become related to the enemy" she almost married Plankton, which Eugene did not like.

This is not a far-fetched fan theory, but a real fact from one of the creators. This was revealed in the commentary track for the special DVD release. True, they didn’t say which sin specifically applies to whom, but it’s not difficult to figure it out.

Patrick is lazy
He lies under a rock for days, his to-do list consists of "Nothing", and in one episode he even received an award for doing nothing the longest. It is common to call it sin, but we still believe that it is art.

Squidward - anger
This guy could have starred in Hate and Hate in Bikini Bottom. Squidward is infuriated by his life, his job, his environment and everything in general.

Mr. Krabs - greed
A creature with the motto "Money, money, money, money, MONEY!" does not raise any questions as to what sin to attribute it to.

Plankton - envy
He envies Mr. Krabs because he has success, clients, power and girls, while Plankton has cobwebs, decay and a robot wife who does nothing but saw.

Gary - Gluttony
Fact: This creature's purpose in life is to fill its belly. Very often, when Gary appears in the picture, SpongeBob says that the snail should be given something to eat. Oh, yes, Kamon, in one episode the pet even ran away from home because the owner forgot to feed him!

Sandy - pride
A squirrel who is madly proud of her heritage, origin, level of development and position in society. Moreover, when her sense of self-importance is hurt, her facial expression becomes such that she immediately wants to apologize for something.

Spongebob - Lust
This point sounds the most dubious of all, but everything changes if you look in the dictionary. One of the definitions of the word lust is excessive love for others. SpongeBob is one of those people for whom it is important to be good in the eyes of others: he will never refuse a friend, acquaintance, or passer-by any request, even the stupidest one. SpongeBob loves everyone and everyone, and there is no point in arguing with that.

2. Patrick has an older sister, Sam.

Although I would rather call it big sister. Sam speaks mostly in menacing sounds.

3. SpongeBob will turn 30 this year.

Judging by his driver's license, Sponge's birthday is July 14, 1986.

4. Patrick weighs only 56 grams

Or 2 oz. That's what it says on his driver's license.

5. SpongeBob worked at the Krusty Krab for 31 years.

At least, this figure was in 2004, when the full-length film “SpongeBob SquarePants” was released. It said he had received 374 Employee of the Month awards. 374 bonuses divided by 12 months = 31 years of service. In connection with the previous point, I want to shout: logic, find yourself!

6. Squidward is not a squid, as is commonly believed

He's an octopus. And he has 6 limbs, not 8, as expected, because “it looked too brutal.”

7. The creator of the series is a marine biologist

The idea for the show itself came to Stephen Hillenburg during another expedition to the seabed.

8. In the series there is a character who appears in moments of chaos and shouts: “My leg!” (My leg!)

His name is Fred, and we think he's the most developed character on the show.

9. A species of sea mushroom discovered in 2011 was named after SpongeBob.

Spongiforma squarepantsii. Looks like a cut orange.

10. SpongeBob was originally going to be called Sponge Boy.

But it turned out that this name was already taken by a brand of mops.

General information

sponge Bob Square Pants

Relentlessly optimistic, kind, funny, hardworking, reliable, SpongeBob lives in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom. His best friend is Patrick the starfish, but he has many other friends with whom he shares common interests. But there are also inhabitants of the town who cannot stand him. His neighbor, Squidward, an octopus who lives in a house that looks like a statue from Easter Island, constantly complains that SpongeBob does not allow him to live in peace. Very often SpongeBob gets too emotional, even in matters that he doesn't even know about (for example, when Squidward suggested that he go on strike at the Krusty Krab, and SpongeBob was very happy about it, although he didn't know what it was) . This, coupled with his overly sociable nature and dolphin-like laugh, irritates other characters such as Mrs. Puff, Squidward, and Plankton. By the way, SpongeBob was in prison once and spent the night in the police station once.

Interests

Patrick Star is one of the main characters in the American animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, voiced by Bill Fagerbake, and in the Russian version by actor Yuri Malyarov.

General information

Patrick is a pink, goofy, densely built starfish. He usually wears green shorts with purple flowers.

Patrick lives under a large rock, across the house from SpongeBob. Patrick has a wind direction indicator on his rock. Many episodes depict Patrick's house as a simple rock with Patrick sleeping on its underside. Other episodes show living quarters under a cliff, full of furniture and appliances made from sand, although the size of the rooms varies depending on the episode. The episode Home Sweet Pineapple shows Patrick covering himself with the rock like a big blanket.

Patrick Star is SpongeBob's neighbor and best friend. They have many common interests: blowing bubbles, catching jellyfish, the TV show “The Adventures of the Sea Superman and the Barnacle Boy.” He often calls on SpongeBob to join him in dangerous or silly activities, such as fishing hook rides. Despite the bad consequences of Patrick's plans, SpongeBob recognizes the genius of some of his ideas and consults with him in difficult situations.

Sandy Cheeks

During the winter, Sandy hibernates. During hibernation, it increases in size and becomes like a bear. In her sleep she talks about outlaws of the Wild West.

Interests Personality

Sandy is very proud of his status as an air-breathing mammal. She is usually friendly and positive, but when angry she becomes instantly ferocious. Sandy speaks with a Southern accent, but whether it is a Texas accent is debatable. She loves her home state of Texas very much and gets angry in response to negative opinions about it.

Friends

Sandy became one of SpongeBob's best friends after saving him from a giant oyster and has since enjoyed having fun with him (like doing karate). Sandy is also friends with Larry, which sometimes makes SpongeBob jealous.

Pets

According to the Wormy series, Sandy has many pets: caterpillars, crickets, mice and snakes. A caterpillar named Wormy has caused quite a stir in Bikini Bottom by transforming into a butterfly.

Sandy's house

Sandy's house is an air-filled dome with a tree growing under it. This is the only place underwater where Sandy can breathe without her suit. Interestingly, natural processes occur under the dome, such as the change of seasons and precipitation.

Squidward Tentacles

House

Krabs lives in a house shaped like a black anchor. There is no information about neighbors.

Sheldon Jay Plankton

Plans and attempts
  • Plankton first appears in the episode of the same name “Plankton!”, where he takes control of Spongebob’s brain and, with the hands of a naive cook, steals one of the Krabby Patties. He planned to place the Krabby Patty in a specially designed analyzer, but ended up getting caught in it himself. Thus, the seemingly foolproof plan completely fails.
  • In the episode "Plankton's Army", it is revealed that Sheldon has been trying to obtain the formula for 25 years. This time, he invites all his many relatives to help him take possession of the treasured formula, but Krabs gives him a fake recipe for making a Krabby Patty. As a result, all the relatives, including cousin Clem, who cannot understand the significance of the formula, run back to the Trash Can.
  • In the episode with the self-explanatory title “F.U.N.” Spongebob teaches Plankton how to have fun, which results in them becoming friends. However, then, as expected, the microscopic villain betrays Spongebob and with his help gets the formula. But immediately after revealing his insidious essence, he falls into concrete and remains out of work.
  • In the episode "Fake Krabs", Plankton constructs a mechanical Krabs robot and passes it off as the real owner of the diner. But soon the real Mr. Krabs appears and stops Spongebob, who is about to give the secret formula to the fake.
  • In the episode "Culture Shock", Plankton uses magic spells to obtain the Krabby Patty recipe, but in the end he himself falls under the influence of his own magic.
  • In "Bucket, Sweet Bucket", Plankton encourages Squidward, Spongebob and Patrick to paint his restaurant, the Trash Bucket. As a result of the actions of this cheerful team of painters, the Garbage Bucket is destroyed, and the formula can no longer be discussed.
  • In the episode "Welcome to the Trash Can", Krabs loses his loyal employee Spongebob to the treacherous Plankton in a card game. Naturally, he tries to force Spongebob to cook Krabby Patties, but he flatly refuses. Then Plankton removes Spongebob's brain and transplants it into the robot, but the robot also does not want to cook anything. As a result, the villain transplants the brain back and returns the careless cook to Krabs, and even with an additional payment of $50.
  • In the episode "Krusty Krab Training Video", Plankton captures a Krabby Patty disguised as an insect, but moves too slowly and Krabs catches up to him.
  • In "The Krabby Patty Horror," Plankton forces Krabs to switch the diner to 24-hour operation and then places an order for 1 million Krabby Patties over the phone. Working for many days without sleep or rest, Spongebob goes crazy and begins to panic about the subject of his activity. He goes to a psychoanalyst, under whose guise Plankton himself disguised himself, and tries to be cured. Plankton puts Spongebob to sleep and intends to find out the recipe through hypnosis, but Spongebob wakes up rested and full of energy, his schizophrenia completely disappears.
  • In the episode "Friend or Foe?" Krabs and Plankton become friends again, the latter coming to his sworn enemy with an apology and vowing that he will never try to steal the secret formula again. As a result, as one might expect, he betrays Krabs and steals the treasured recipe. But Krabs, together with Spongebob, manages to neutralize him in time.
  • In the first full-length cartoon, “SpongeBob SquarePants (film),” Plankton steals the crown of the powerful King Neptune, as a result of which he is going to destroy the Krusty Krabs, and with him Mr. Krabs, who was blamed for the kidnapping. Spongebob and Patrick go on a journey and find the crown, but upon their return, Plankton seizes control of all the city's residents and sends them against the brave heroes. Unexpectedly for everyone, Spongebob takes up a guitar and begins to sing a powerful rock song, which completely dispels the villain's spell.
Interesting facts about Plankton
  • The official directory of the Nickelodeon TV channel says that Uncle Plankton lives in Russia.
  • In "Crabburger Horror", Sheldon used the name Peter Lankton (P. Lankton for short) when he wanted to order crabburgers anonymously.
  • Until Plankton's Army, Plankton's "wife" did not know his name.
  • In Krabby Patty Road, Plankton stole the Krabby Patty recipe, which was actually called the "Secret Formula" (as Plankton called it), and the ingredient list was just a bunch of letters.
