Before us is a painting by V.E. Makovsky "Date". It depicts a boy of about nine years old and his mother.

His work uniform reaches all the way to his feet. He has no shoes. He stands barefoot in the middle of the room. The boy was so hungry that he grabbed a piece of bread with his teeth. He doesn't even look at his mother, who came to him. He is so tired, but finds it vital to eat.
Apparently he is a worker. This is noticeable by his dirty clothes. The fact that he is hungry proves his zeal for work.
It seems to me that the boy went to work because of problems in the family. They may live in a village, but there is nowhere to work there.
His mother is wearing a dark sweatshirt. A red checkered dress peeks out from under her. She sadly watches the boy eat. The woman is so nervous that she bites her nails. Maybe she regrets sending him to work. But the family needs to live somehow, and they have no other way.
They apparently live poorly. This woman is in mourning. Perhaps someone in this family died, or something else happened. She must have come from afar to take the money from the boy.
The room we see is not a boy's. He is not dressed in home clothes, but in work clothes. Most likely, this is the reception room where all the workers come. The walls and door of this room look dirty. There is a jug of water on the barrel so that workers can come and drink.
I liked this picture. From it you can judge the hard life of some people. There are families in which children are ready to work to save their loved ones.

The famous painting by V. Makovsky “Date” was painted in 1883. It is a typical work of the “Itinerants” and is dedicated to the theme of the impoverishment of the village and the difficult life of the people. The drama of the work, as is often the case with V. Makovsky, is softened by lyrical notes.

Probably the most poignant work on a social theme by Vladimir Makovsky is the painting “Date,” which the author finished painting in 1883. Here one can clearly see the influence of the traveling art association, which prioritized the problems of contemporary society.
The heroes of the picture are the poorest representatives of the Russian people, mother and son. The young man, due to lack of funds, was sent to the city as an apprentice, and this is hard, long-hour and poorly paid work. His mother came to visit him, bringing only a loaf of bread from her gifts.
The boy is dressed in a dirty dark apron, from under which a colorful shirt with rolled up sleeves is visible. There is nothing on his feet at all - the young man stands barefoot on the earthen floor.
The hero's face is surprising: the viewer does not immediately recognize him as a boy, rather, it is the face of a man. The features have become coarser, the gaze is focused on food, and the expression is not childishly serious.
The mother, wrapped in a scarf, is shown in profile by Makovsky. She looks thoughtfully into the void, thinking about the difficult lot of her son. How her mother’s heart aches and groans... Her shoulders are covered by a rough sheepskin coat, and a simple woolen skirt tells us that she came from the village, and, most likely, on foot. It is winter outside, so her path was not an easy one.
Their meeting is devoid of hugs, conversations and any communication at all - the exhausted heroes are tired of hard work and worries. The scenery against which their joyless date unfolds only emphasizes the extreme poverty.
Their meeting takes place in some gloomy room with blackened wooden walls, where among the household items we can only notice a clay jug standing on a barrel. It seems that we can hear the ringing silence hanging in this cramped room.
The picture is dominated by a dark coloring, “diluted” only by bright contrasting spots – the clothes and faces of the characters. Makovsky specifically highlighted the faces of the mother and son using a well-known technique - natural sunlight falls on them from a small window, which the painter deliberately does not include in the composition.
As for the compositional structure, here Makovsky remains true to himself - he brings the heroes of his plot as close as possible to the viewer so that we can see their faces and dull eyes. This achieves a huge emotional effect.
A thin boy with an adult face no older than 13 years old, unusually hungry, barefoot, dressed in poor, unkempt clothes, and his mother who treats her son to bread - a plot that depicts the deepest life tragedy of typical representatives of the poor segment of the Russian population. And the work also reeks of helplessness and hopelessness.
The painting "Date" in terms of the power of its emotional impact can only be compared with "The Little Organ Grinders", created 15 years before the work described.
Makovsky never limited himself to depicting social problems, for which he was condemned by other Itinerants, but if he nevertheless addressed this problem, he did so with his characteristic responsibility and sincerity, which is why the artist’s social works still resonate in our hearts.

Famous painters and school teachers constantly visited the house of his father, Yegor Ivanovich Makovsky. It is not surprising that all the children: daughter Alexandra, sons Konstantin, Nikolai, Vladimir, brought up in the spirit of love for art, under the influence of their father, an erudite and enthusiast, became artists.
Alexandra is not as famous as her brothers. In the second half of the 19th century, a woman artist was still the exception rather than the rule.
Konstantin chose an independent path. The works created by him are distinguished by a genre tendency; his canvases are distinguished by poetry and touching images.
Vladimir has no equal. In his numerous paintings he touched upon and showed the life of all social groups and strata of Russia.

V. E. Makovsky was born in Moscow, in the family of a famous artist, one of the founders of MUZHV - MUZHVZ - E I. Makovsky.
From childhood, the boy (and his brother, later also the famous painter K. E. Makovsky) was surrounded by an artistic atmosphere, he constantly saw famous masters visiting his father’s house, heard their arguments and conversations about art, was imbued with thoughts about its high purpose and therefore very early felt my calling.
Makovsky took his first painting lessons from V. A. Tropinin and at the age of fifteen, under his guidance, he painted the painting “The Boy Selling Kvass” (1861).
In 1861-66. Makovsky studied at MUZHV - MUZHVZ, where he received good professional training under the guidance of artists E. S. Sorokin and S. K. Zaryanko.
After graduating from college, Makovsky went to St. Petersburg and entered the Academy of Arts, where he successfully studied.
In 1869, for the painting “Peasant Boys Guarding Horses at Night (Night),” which is largely consonant with I. S. Turgenev’s story “Bezhin Meadow,” he received a gold medal and the title of artist of the 1st degree.
In 1870, at the exhibition of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers, his painting “In the Doctor’s Waiting Room” was presented, which with gentle humor depicts a priest enthusiastically explaining to an old woman his “true” recipe for toothache. Attention to detail (the carefully drawn mirror-glass and lithograph on the wall, the priest’s silk cassock and the old woman’s checkered wool scarf) and, most importantly, warm irony are reminiscent of the tradition of P. A. Fedotov. The picture was a success, and its author was destined to become a genre painter. Interest in the “little man,” his sorrows and joys, has now become the leitmotif of the artist’s works.
His paintings of the early 1870s are imbued with the same humor: “Lovers of Nightingale Singing,” “Game of Knives,” “Receiving a Pension,” “Psalm Readers.” All of them were small in size, written in a smooth, picturesque manner. Gradually, the humorous coloring of Makovsky’s paintings becomes somewhat different. They contain disturbing notes, reminding the viewer of human injustice, of the humiliated and insulted. In the paintings “Visiting the Poor” (1874), “The Collective” (1875), “In the Entrance” (1884), “Waiting. At the Prison” (1875), “The Lodging House” (1889) and others, the artist shows the miserable life of the urban poor , vivid contrasts between poverty and prosperity.

In 1879, Makovsky created the painting “The Convict,” where he depicted with obvious sympathy a young Narodnaya Volya member leaving the courtroom, accompanied by gendarmes. The grief of his poor old parents only emphasized the drama of the work, which, according to V.V. Stasov, “dug deeply and powerfully into modern life.”

In 1883, Vladimir Makovsky painted a famous painting called “Date.” At first, based on the title, it may seem that the canvas depicts something romantic, perhaps a young couple in love, but everything is not at all like that, when the viewer sees the image, he is immersed in a completely different world.

The artist painted the picture under the impression of the impoverished life of the people; the author tried to express through his work all the hardships of the Russian people. How hard it is for him to survive in such a difficult time.

Before us is a typical situation, mother and son. Apparently the mother came from the village as an apprentice, where her son is forced to work, she is dressed extremely simply, but her attire says that it is the winter season: an ordinary village black sheepskin coat, a scarf and probably felt boots under a long skirt. The woman looks at the boy with longing and special sadness in her eyes; from her pose and gaze you can understand that she is driven into such a situation and perhaps she wanted a completely different fate for her son, but this is how circumstances develop, life does not provide a way out, forcing her to act according to a certain scheme.

Her child is greedily devouring a baked goods, apparently brought by the mother, the boy’s face is quite pale, probably from fatigue and exhaustion, his gaze is serious and far from childish. The atmosphere around them is gloomy, cold colors predominate, which deprive the room of any comfort, there is a jug on the table, apparently there was or is water there, and under the woman’s feet there is a bundle with which she walked from the village.

This work really touches me, because it completely reveals all the misfortune and suffering of the people. I believe that such paintings can confidently be classified as historical, telling the truth, exactly what the artist was able to see in his time, with his special creative gaze.
