The most important thing, even if you don’t know how to dance and have never taken dance lessons, is relaxation and the ability to feel the character of the music. We already talked about relaxation in one of the previous lessons, now it’s time to learn how to determine the nature of the musical...

Who among us has not felt at least secret admiration when looking at people who know how to dance well? For some people, such a sight also evokes a feeling of joy and inspiration, because a beautiful and well-executed dance is a real art. And some people, after seeing it, decide that they will definitely take up dancing. But how do you learn to dance? What should you do and where to start?

The purpose of training

If you're interested in learning how to dance just so you don't have to stand in the corner at a party, you don't have to sign up for a dance school. All you need is to learn how to listen to music correctly, relax and move to the rhythm. The Internet is full of videos that will help you learn a couple of simple club moves, and even more, which will allow you to feel comfortable at discos.

But if you want to learn how to dance a specific style, then you will have to seriously try.

How to choose a dance style

If you don't have a specific style in mind that you plan to learn, then think: perhaps you like classic motifs combined with innovative ideas? Then choose the jazz-modern style. You are fascinated by the culture of American ghettos - dance one of the styles of hip-hop. If you like classic graceful movements, learn ballroom dancing.

You can think about what kind of songs you like. This way, you will sooner decide what kind of music, and therefore what style, you will like to dance to the most.

Search for videos of a variety of dances on the Internet and try to understand the basics of the different styles. Perhaps not every type of dance will suit you. Some styles require a certain amount of physical stamina, such as breakdancing. People with bad knees or other health problems, unfortunately, may also find themselves limited in their choice of dance options.

Learning from professionals

If you decide to study with a teacher, then first you need to choose a school or dance studio where they can teach you exactly the style that you have chosen.

Classes at a dance school are disciplined, and the teacher will immediately give you an idea of how the training will proceed, what stages await you and what you will do, and will provide timely assistance in correcting mistakes that you will certainly make at first.

The competitive spirit among newcomers to dance school encourages them to work harder, and dancing with other students is much more fun than dancing alone at home.

Let's dance at home

If you don’t have the opportunity to take dance courses or study with a teacher, but you still have a desire to dance, then don’t despair - you can learn dancing at home. But if you study on your own, you will have to put a lot more effort into your studies.

Where to begin

To practice dancing, you need to acquire the appropriate equipment - comfortable shoes and clothing. This could be sneakers, a T-shirt and leggings. But depending on the dance you are learning, the style of clothing may also change: for hip-hop classes, for example, wide sweatpants are suitable, and for classical dances you need special shoes

It may happen that before taking dance classes you will have to improve your ear for music. At first you will dance to the count, but then you will have to navigate the music and coordinate movements on your own, and therefore the ability to correctly hear the music and rhythm will come in handy.

Dance warm-up

Each workout begins with a warm-up and stretching. If you don't prepare your body for training, you are more likely to suffer various injuries when unexpected stress is placed on your muscles and joints.

The set of warm-up exercises in different styles of dance sometimes differs and, depending on the parts of the body that are used in this dance, the emphasis is placed on them. But the general warm-up and stretching for dancing follows the same pattern: a couple of minutes of active movement - running, walking, freestyle dancing; turns and tilts the head to the side, lifting the shoulders, abducting/spreading the shoulder blades, bending the torso, squats, stretching the back and legs.

We invite you to watch a video with warm-up exercises before dancing.

There is no need to do a too intense warm-up. Its task is not to leave you without strength at the very first stage of training, but to prepare your body for dancing.

Body work

Perhaps not a single dancer can answer the question of how to learn to dance and not take care of your body, because it is impossible. For many types of dances, one warm-up will not be enough to cope with all the accompanying loads - it is necessary to develop endurance, strengthen your body and prepare it for performing power elements, such as lifts in ballroom dancing, stands in breakdancing, active footwork in tap dancing and etc.

Remember to eat properly and hydrate your body to control your weight and replenish the moisture you lose during your workouts.

Learn to dance

And remember: mastery only comes with practice and experience. All the wonderful performances you have seen from dancers hide behind them hundreds and thousands of hours spent in training and training.

These people, just like you, doubted whether they should start dancing and whether they would achieve such success, but look what they have achieved now. All in your hands!

How to start dancing if you are a log and want to dance

There's nothing worse than advice that starts with the word "simple." “I don’t know how to dance at all, but I really want to, what should I do?!” - “Just get started!”, “Just sign up for a dance course!”, “Just forget it, there are more fun classes!”

Yeah, it’s only when you try to “just start” that your legs get tangled and your hands fuss about in space. And you tried to sign up for courses... But you couldn’t keep up with the others and all you could think about was – thank you, huge mirrors! - how terrible you look when you twitch so ridiculously. Unlike the teacher and the whole class.

First of all, let's say that taking courses is a very good idea. But things will go easier if you prepare a little in advance. Before you learn the movements directly, you need to get better accustomed to your body. It will be much easier to follow only the movements, having already mastered the science of following the rhythm and lifting the legs.

To start practicing, you will need: the very tunes that make you want to dance most often (with a pronounced rhythm, this is important!), sportswear, some free time and a deserted, relatively spacious room. And now

Do it once!

First, wake up your body to movement. Most city young ladies are actually not very ready for it. Take it and... stretch! Raising your hands up. With taste. With tension throughout the body - even standing on tiptoes. As it sometimes happened in childhood, when you slept for a long, long time and woke up on a wonderful golden summer day. Drop your hands quickly. And... stretch again. Only now – arms to the sides, so that the shoulder blades on the back move. And drop it sharply. Now stretch from the position that comes to mind. Yes, why? This is your body, wherever you want, you are drawn there. And change your position again. Well, that’s it, do you feel how the blood is running completely differently? It's time to do something further.

Do two!

The main thing in dancing is to be able to relax and not tense up. Do you think you don’t need to be taught this? Yeah, yeah! Could you feel your neck and back muscles, one hundred percent there are clamps there. In an amicable way, they “simply” go to massage therapists, and we will also be amicable, but not simply. Do you remember how at school they clasped their bent arms behind their backs, one coming from below, the other from above? Try this. Then change hands. Even if you can’t clasp your fingers, then at least try, stretch your hands towards each other with all your might. If it’s easier in one position than in another, by the way, you have scoliosis. Now release your hands and move your shoulders vigorously in a circle. Repeat everything several times. You won’t be able to completely disassemble the clamps in one go, but it will be easier on your muscles.

Do three!

Rhythm. You definitely have it inside you, that’s why you react to music the way you do. But until now it might not have been possible to get it out. Start with the simplest thing. Make your dance... yes, dance!.. from the most basic movements. Put your hands on your hips and walk along the invisible path to the beat of the music. Twice as slow as music. Is it weak at twice the speed? How about changing the type of gait? Jump on two legs, for example, or rise on your toes every step and then fall back? Experiment, don't be afraid. How about being someone dangerous or, on the contrary, careful? What about your hands? We forgot about our hands. Stand still and raise and lower them to the beat of the music. By the way, your shoulders will soon get tired, then return to your steps, but then your arms again. Come up with a simple movement, from clapping to... to anything, in general, and do it to the beat of the music.

Make it four!

One such training will not be enough. It must be repeated at least twice a week. But, again, this will not be enough. Look at the dancing! Play clips on YouTube with good dancers, choreographed performances to your favorite songs and just follow the performers with your eyes. One day the movements will come naturally to you, although you can’t believe it yet. So for now, “just” enjoy, because dance, first of all, is pleasure, right? And it will be yours.

Usually repeating - sometimes by accident, in the heat of the moment - the first movements are achieved after two to four weeks of training. From now on (you can congratulate yourself!) you are dancing. And soon you can walk your new skill around all friendly parties and work corporate events without hesitation.

Everyone loves to dance. It has been scientifically proven that dancing relieves stress, lifts your mood and even strengthens your immune system. Scientists and doctors are sure that dance helps to harmonize your relationships with the outside world and enhance mental activity. And he also gives pleasure. But you are not born with the ability to dance; you have to learn it. For some people, it is enough to watch how others move in order to immediately adopt their style and start dancing beautifully themselves. Others have to go to special dance training groups. What about those who do not have access to these opportunities?

How to learn to dance at home? Is it possible? Of course available. Especially in our time, when you can invite a virtual dance teacher to your home. After all, there are many videos on the Internet that show in detail how to move while performing this or that dance.

However, just videos are not enough. Dance, especially modern dance, puts a lot of stress on muscles and ligaments, so training or teaching must be approached very carefully so as not to damage them.

So how to learn to dance at home? First you need to decide what exactly you want to dance. After this, it is very advisable to read the history of the chosen dance. After all, any dance is a reflection of the culture of a certain people or layer of society, and each movement carries a precise meaning. Misunderstanding of dance culture often leads to quite funny results.

Once, in a conversation with several young Muscovites who were vacationing in Kuban for the first time, unfamiliar with the local culture, but passionately wanting to dance Lezginka, I asked: how to learn to dance Lezginka at home? How did they do it?

The girls were surprised at my inability and offered to teach me the dance right in the restaurant where the conversation took place (and it was in Kuban). And as soon as the orchestra started playing Lezginka, they jumped out onto the dance floor and began to perform something vaguely reminiscent of Shamil’s dance, which is more often called Lezginka. But... self-confident creatures performed... the male part of this dance.

Needless to say, what a laughing stock they have become in the Kuban town, where boys and girls learn to dance Lezginka before they can walk?

So, after you have become familiar with the history of the dance and the images that it should convey, you need to create a training schedule. To understand exactly how to learn to dance at home, you need to realize that, as in any training, only regular lessons can bring benefits. Therefore, it is advisable to practice daily.

Training, like any lesson, should be divided into several stages.

The first is warm-up or general physical preparation. Like any activity of this kind, it should first include exercises that warm up the muscles, then stretching. It is important to ensure that the warm-up involves absolutely all the muscles: from the neck to the toes (lezginka, for example, is performed on the fingers). It is necessary to finish the warm-up with relaxation of the whole body and light self-massage.

The second stage is repeating previously learned movements or, if you have just started learning, watching video instructions and repeating them. Fortunately, entire cable TV channels and Internet sites are dedicated to video lessons on dancing. You can use traditional dance textbooks, where all the movements are described and drawn in detail. Unfortunately, such textbooks are quite difficult to buy today. Therefore, to the question of how to learn to dance tectonics at home (or breakdancing, or electro, or hip-hop, or tango, etc.), there is only one answer: watch video lessons.

As soon as you have consolidated previously learned movements or combinations, begin to introduce new elements into the dance. This will be the third stage of classes. Remember, your task is to achieve freedom of action, learn to combine movements so that with each new musical chord a new rhythmic, plastic or figurative pattern is born.

The last stage is the creation of a single dance image. When rehearsing in front of a mirror, try to create an image that matches the culture that gave birth to the dance. For example, one of the directions of tectonics (Milky Way) is designed to demonstrate the dancer, the male part of the Lezginka - his belligerence, courage, and tango - his ardent passion.

Repeat the learned fragment several times along with connections and transitions and move on to relaxation exercises.

Of course, there can be as many teaching methods as there are people. Therefore, if desired, everyone can find their own teaching method and independently answer the question of how to learn to dance at home.

There is no great chance that you will be invited to a social ball; you are much more likely to end up at a club or at a party of friends in another democratic setting.

The ability to dance will come in handy everywhere. Having mastered the technique, you will feel confident, increase self-esteem, improve your posture and figure, change internally, and feel incomparable pleasure. Find out which modern dances for girls are the most popular and where to learn fashionable dance moves.

Dance as a useful hobby

Control of one's body in dance is given to almost all people, but many are prevented from realizing themselves by excessive modesty. If you are shy in company and refuse men who invite you to dance, restructure yourself internally. Especially modest girls can try to learn how to dance modern dances at home by turning on their favorite music and improvising in front of a mirror.

This hobby is suitable for women of all ages, weights and body types. Don't be shy if you have a non-standard figure, curvy hips, large breasts or a protruding tummy.

Dancing is good not only for your mood and beauty, but also for good health. Thanks to dance movements, blood flow increases, lung function improves, and the heart strengthens. After regular exercise, posture improves, coordination of movements and the functioning of the vestibular apparatus are normalized.

For every girl and woman there is a suitable type of modern dance, in which it is easy to turn disadvantages into advantages. By dancing regularly, girls become more feminine, their gait and facial movements change. Choreography teaches the art of seduction and coquetry, playfulness and a confident look. At the same time, dancers know how to keep their distance and are never toys in the hands of a man.

Where to learn to dance quickly and beautifully

Eat two ways to learn to dance– independently and under the guidance of a teacher. The first option is ideal for those who once studied choreography, and now just want to master a new style. The second guarantees success for everyone.

Homeschooling and its features

For independent training, girls can use video lessons on modern dance, read books on choreography, watch films, study theory in magazines.

It is important not to neglect the recommendations of the virtual choreographer, but to strictly follow them. Even more important is to find good courses and materials for self-study. It’s better to choose a few, and only then weed out the extra ones, understanding the nuances.

To begin with, of course, you can do without a suit, but a suit helps you get in the right mood and immediately accustoms you to movements taking into account clothing. You definitely need suitable music; training lessons and a description of the dance will help you choose it.

For beginners, it is better to choose directions in which improvisation is allowed. As a rule, these are “originals” from street styles; they do not require special preparation, costumes or a partner. Having mastered the technique of free dance styles, you will feel confident on the dance floor.

It is more difficult to master classical styles, which require learning the position of the body, head, arms, basic positions and steps. Such areas require classes with a teacher at home or at school.

Training in schools and studios

If you are used to taking everything seriously and want to be not only a participant, but also the central link of the dance floor, then it is better to enroll in a modern dance school.

Advantages of studying in the studio:

  1. Experienced teachers, in good schools - professional choreographers.
  2. No need to think about where to find a partner or team for pairs and group dances.
  3. Professional dance hall with mirrors, necessary music.
  4. A special atmosphere and new friends with similar interests.

Types of modern dances for beginners

It is easiest for beginners to master modern dance styles, which do not have clear rules of choreography. Small flaws here are practically unnoticeable; they are taken for improvisation and the girl’s personal highlights.

Free dance - the choice of dreamers

Free dance, also known as rhythmic or plastic dance, appeared at the beginning of the last century. The basis of this dance style is ballet, diluted with free movements from everyday life. The main essence of this direction is emancipation, energy, interaction with the environment.

In free dancing to modern music, improvisation, spontaneity, and creativity are encouraged. Perhaps this is the best choice for beginners, since there are no strict rules of choreography and technique, but there is an opportunity for self-expression.

Girls can perform free dances either alone or in pairs with a man. The absence of strict boundaries is a guarantee that you will not look like a bad dancer, because everyone can come up with their own moves.

Modernity as the choice of the free

Modernism arose against the backdrop of the denial of traditional ballet techniques. His credo is the rejection of canons and conventions, the embodiment new choreography. Modernity came to modern girls from the twentieth century. One of the founders of the movement was Isadora Duncan. Another dancer who contributed to the development and popularity of the style is Mary Wigman, who abandoned traditional beautiful movements in favor of unusual and even shocking ones.

Modern dance is danced barefoot, its main choreographer is nature. The technique cannot be called complex; the main component of success is the dancer’s emotionality. Sensuality in every movement is a guarantee of your own pleasure and the delight of others.

Electro - youth direction

Electro is one of the most popular trends in the list of modern dances for girls, accessible to beginners. In essence, this is a street dance, born in the middle of the last century to club music. Electro is danced more with the hands than with the body, so it is ideal for beginner dancers and people with poor physical fitness.

There are two directions:

  1. Milky Way – calm movements, somewhat similar to the performance of an actor on stage. Each dancer’s performance is a small performance with a beginning and an ending. It is better to start learning to dance electro with this type, then moving on to a more complex direction.
  2. Electro – active movements that smoothly transform into each other at high speed. The main thing here is to feel the music and understand what they are singing about in the song, so that the movements do not contradict the meaning.

Tectonics – dynamics and energy

Tectonic is another modern dance direction for girls and boys. Tectonic combines dance elements of techno, hip-hop, popping, and locking. True fans adhere to a certain style of clothing - skinny jeans, tight T-shirts, basketball-style sneakers. They are distinguished by futuristic hairstyles with gothic elements.

However, there are no strict requirements; you can dance tectonics in any clothes and with any hairstyle. Not only tight-fitting, but also loose clothing is allowed - hoodies, shorts, tops. Best suited for movement flat shoes.

It is customary to distinguish two groups of tectonics – hard and soft. Each group includes several types of dance. It is difficult to learn dance elements on your own; it is better to do it in a group or with a teacher.

Breakdancing is a favorite of the flexible ones

Breakdancing is a dance for modern girls who master acrobatics, which originated in the seventies of the last century. Breakdancing literally hit the masses with a wave in 1984 after the release of the film Beat Street. They began to dance it at discos, clubs and even at school parties.

Break is divided into two large groups - lower and upper:

  • The top break is similar to a popular disco dance. It is characterized by sharp clutching movements of the arms, legs and the whole body. The top break group includes many stylistic trends.
  • Lower breakdancing is more complex and filled with acrobatic tricks. It is danced on the floor and requires physical fitness and strength to hold the body up. This type of modern dance is more suitable for boys than girls.

Break clothes need to be as comfortable and convenient as possible. B-girls breakdance in beautiful sportswear from famous brands to look stylish and attractive. There are no problems with a short haircut, but those with long hair need to take care that the hair does not interfere with movements.

Hip-Hop – mischievous and rhythmic

Hip-Hop originated among the working class of New York in the mid-seventies. Within a few years it became part of youth culture in many countries. In the late nineties, Hip-Hop turned out to be a full-fledged component of the music industry. Nowadays, this trend is distinguished as a fashionable subculture; it is a popular style that has become a lifestyle for some.

Hip-hop dances to rhythmic music, including rap. The rhythm, as a rule, is set by DJs, and dancers need to have time to hear the music and think through movements to it.

Contempo - flight of the soul

Contempo successfully combines several dance styles. It attracts girls with its simplicity of movements and the ability to improvise. The founders of contemporary dance, including Isadora Duncan, did everything so that everyone could master this dance.

Contempo training should begin with the preparation of muscles, joints and ligaments. The essence is alternating tense muscles with sharp relaxation. Contempo is built on the contrast of falls and rises, characterizing contradiction and balance. It is better to dance barefoot, so that nothing interferes with freedom.

Hakka - the choice of modern girls

Hakka appeared in the eighties of the twentieth century, thanks to the hardcore musical direction. The energetic movements of this distinctively named modern dance are driven by the bass beats of heavy rock. This is one of the most emotional dance styles, requiring endurance and athletic training from girls.

During training, you can even lose weight, as a lot of energy is spent and calories are burned. Hakka strengthens the leg muscles, pumps up the thighs and makes the lower body more toned and slender.

At the same time, Hakku is easy for beginners to learn; it has few basic elements, and everything else is improvisation that fits within the framework of the style.

Go-Go - for disco stars

Go-Go originated in the mid-sixties of the last century; initially it was one of the ways to entertain visitors in entertainment venues, festivals, clubs, and discos. Go-Go came to Russia only in the nineties; it was actively used not only in clubs and discos, but also to attract attention to any public events.

There is no need to consider Go-Go as something obscene, a dancing woman is always remains inaccessible. In the early days of Go-Go, dancers were even hung in cages so that men would not even think about approaching them.

The ability to dance Go-Go is necessary for self-confident girls who love to attract attention and be in the center of events. Go-Go will be useful in a club or disco, it will teach you to catch the rhythm, control your warmth, play and improvise.

The best dance styles for women

For women who look at dance as a hobby and an opportunity for self-realization, there are many modern trends. You need to proceed from your existing skills and initial physical training. Gradually, the bar can be raised, moving on to more complex styles.

Oriental and Indian dances for beginners

Oriental charm will never go out of fashion, because the spirit of the East leaves no one indifferent. All are exclusively female, they are playful and light. Modern types are ideal for girls and women who cannot be classified as skinny - curvy shapes and even a protruding tummy are welcome. After just a few lessons, the plump girls forget about their complexes and present them as their advantages.

Most Popular three directions:

  • Egyptian - it is characterized by modesty, more closed clothes;
  • Arabic - hair plays one of the main roles, the play of loose hair is an element of dance;
  • Turkish – revealing outfits, contact with the audience, dancing on the table.

Belly dancing is the most beloved oriental dance, bright, spectacular, fabulous. You can learn it on your own, but it is better to attend at least a few classes at school. For belly dancing, costume, jewelry, and makeup are important. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, belly dancing has come out of the underground and even entered the structure of the All-Russian Dance Organization.

Alluring Indian melodies make even those who have never learned to dance start dancing. Indian choreography is based on Natya- a dance and musical style born from Bharata Muni’s theory of “Natya Shastra”. Not only movements are important, facial expressions, eye play, and internal energy play a huge role here. These skills will not interfere in life.

List of popular couple dances

Pair dancing, both ballroom and modern, helps girls quickly find a common language with men, teaches them to be in a pair, dominate and submit, depending on the situation. For shy girls and women, this is the best way to get rid of excessive modesty and awkwardness from a man’s touch.

The most popular modern couple dances:

  • Waltz is a slow one that does not lose popularity and is constantly evolving. The ability to dance a waltz is a sign of good form.
  • Tango is an ancient Argentine dance, which is still called modern. Today tango is divided into many types: Argentinean, Uruguayan, ballroom, Finnish and others.
  • Balboa - very close contact with the partner, the bodies should be pressed closely together so that there is no gap. There are not many movements, so this modern dance is great for beginners.
  • Rock and roll is a rhythmic couple dance with relaxed movements. Rock and roll requires acrobatic skills and long training, it is better to train with one partner as it requires a lot of support at a fast pace.
  • Flamenco is a vibrant cocktail of Moroccan, Spanish and gypsy motifs, full of improvisation and mystery.
  • Paso Doble is a dance style that resembles Spanish bullfighting. The man plays a bullfighter, and the girl plays a cloak or mulet in the hands of a matador.
  • Rumba is a dramatic dance of love to the rhythms of African drums overlaid with clave rhythms. Modern rubma is divided into ballroom, Cuban, African and gypsy.

When choosing a dance, focus on initial training, posture, endurance, and the functioning of the vestibular apparatus. This doesn’t mean that you have to limit yourself to limits, you just need to start small. You may need to do or first, and only then move on to dance exercises.

The list and descriptions of modern dances were prepared with the participation of Fashion Dance Schools. Especially for the online magazine “Women’s Hobbies”.
