How to change the channel on a router

Now that you know which Wi-Fi channel works best, you will need to change your router settings. Accessing your router's settings requires a browser such as Chrome. Access to its settings varies between different router models, but there are some general rules.

Note: Most routers can use “admin” as the login and “password” as the password. Registration information may also be printed on the back of the router or in the instruction manual that came with it. If you can't access your router, try searching the Internet for a way to open your individual router.

After briefly constructing logical chains between the router and two computers, I came to the conclusion that the reason lies in the laptop.

First of all, I must say that I did not change anything in the wireless network settings, and the WPA/WPA2 mode was already set in advance.

Diagnosis of lack of Internet or why there is no Internet

When you discover that the Internet is “lost,” the first and most logical diagnostic method would be to shout to your mother or wife in the next room, “Do you have Internet?” Well, do you understand what I mean? If there are other gadgets in the house that receive the Internet, first of all check whether it is available on them. If there is Internet on them, then the problem is in your computer. And the first thing you should do is restart your computer or gadget. Let's talk about the rest further.

External factors of lack of Internet

If the Internet is not available on them either, we quickly run to the modem. On the modem we look at which lights are on. This is different for everyone, but as a rule, the Power light should be on, the ADSL light should be on, this is a wire coming from the telephone line or possibly from another source. The third light is Wi-Fi or LAN (local area network wire connecting your modem to your computer). And one more light, this is the network status or just the Internet. The light lets you know whether the modem is receiving Internet or not. I told you this in a simplified version.

In general, you, of course, should know your modem and the number of lights that should be on there. First of all, if something lights up incorrectly or in the wrong color (not green in most cases), simply turn the modem off and on again, that is, reboot it. In 70% of cases this helps. If the Internet still doesn’t appear, let’s look at what’s wrong. If the ADSL indicator is not on, then the first thing to do is pick up your home phone and check for dial tone. If they are not there, then the problem is on the line and all you can do is wait. If there are beeps, then the problem is in the wire running from the network to the modem or in the splitter. Check their condition. If all else fails, call technical support. By the way, the splitter is often the cause of breakdown. If you have a spare or have someone to borrow, then replace it and see what happens.

Next, LAN or Wi-Fi indicator. If it does not light up, the problem is either in the wire running from the modem to the computer, or in the network card/Wi-Fi adapter of the computer itself. I want to say right away, even if you check everything and everything is fine in all respects, do not forget that the failure may be in the modem itself, but there is nothing we can do about it ourselves. The first is my device that receives Wi-Fi, and the second item is my network card. If your network card is not in the list of network adapters, then it is either disconnected or at the end of its life. I had this situation on my laptop where the wires from the Wi-Fi were disconnected. And in the task manager the adapter appeared and disappeared.

You should also pay attention in the task manager to elements with an exclamation mark.

This means that the hardware is installed in the computer, but software, that is, drivers, has not yet been installed on it. This also happens during various failures, and such exclamation marks, as a rule, should not exist, especially on the equipment that you use, in particular on a network card or Wi-Fi adapter. In such situations, you just need to update or install the drivers.

The Internet disappeared, for a long time I did not know what the reason was. It turned out that the settings for the modem were changed by the provider. Changing the wireless network channel when Wi-Fi is unstable

This is the first and most important tip that you should definitely try. We know that every Wi-Fi network operates on some channel. If there are many of these networks, then they begin to interfere with each other, and interference appears. As a result, Wi-Fi is unstable. Well, and various incomprehensible problems that I wrote about above, and which you have most likely already encountered.

You can try setting some kind of static channel (if you have Auto), or vice versa, set Auto if a static channel was selected. In the article linked above, I wrote about finding the freest channel using the inSSIDer program. You can use it.

You just need to go to the router settings, go to the tab where you configure the wireless network, and in the Channel item change the channel. This is what it looks like on Tp-Link routers:

After each channel change, do not forget save the settings and reboot the router. Be sure to try several options. It should help.

Almost always, such problems in the wireless network occur due to the router. Not uncommonly, this is due to the firmware. Therefore, I strongly recommend updating the firmware of your router. It is also possible that the wireless network may be unstable due to some technical problems with the router. Something with the board itself, or the power adapter. By the way, it is power adapters that very often cause such problems. The router simply does not receive the necessary power and there are connection breaks, etc. Well, strong changes in the power supply can affect the operation of the router. If the Internet cuts out after you create some kind of load on the router (online videos, games, torrents, connecting new devices, etc.), then this is usually due to an inexpensive (not powerful) router.

Need to eliminate problems on the ISP side. It may well be that the connection is broken on its end, and the router has nothing to do with it. It’s very easy to check, just connect the Internet directly to your computer and check its operation.

What causes problems with Wi-Fi and how to find a way out of the situation?

It is difficult to name one or more reasons that cause the troubles described above, because they can manifest themselves from literally anything: from unstable voltage in the power supply to technical problems with the router or physical wear and tear of the equipment. But, perhaps, most often, problems of an incomprehensible nature are caused by the presence of certain problems that appear on the channel used to work in a particular wireless network. Wireless network problems caused by channel interference

We won’t delve too deeply into the topic of how wireless networks and channels work; we’ll just note that each Wi-Fi network operates on a specific channel, the number of which in Europe is thirteen. Let’s assume that the network a person uses operates on the third channel, but after a certain time another network appears on the same channel (this can happen, for example, when a neighbor changes the channel or installs a router), as a result of which the above-described problems with network.

What to do in such cases? One option is to organize a change in the channel on which the network operates. Usually, the default mode in the router settings is Auto. In this mode, the router independently searches for a free network and subsequently works in it. However, this is not always possible due to incorrect definition of a free network, a static channel, or simply a lack of router support for this mode.
